00:00Because I was going crazy.
00:03I think me, Olivia, and Chappell can all agree.
00:08Like I was unwell.
00:12And I'm a sucker for the way that you move, babe.
00:16I'm going to hear you right now.
00:25I understand why people are interested,
00:27because humans are naturally curious creatures.
00:30But I don't give a fuck because they're never right.
00:33Writing the album was like my favorite part of that time.
00:36I had so much fun.
00:37I was writing lyrics, smiling ear to ear,
00:40like so happy to get things off my chest.
00:43I felt immense freedom.
00:45I literally have never had a better time writing an album,
00:49which is hilarious because the album is truly miserable.
00:53I named it Wishbone because I think relationships remind me a lot of wishbones.
01:00It's like the only wishing ritual that requires two people.
01:04But a wishbone requires two people and they essentially make a bet against each other.
01:10And they're like, hey, I want my wish to come true.
01:14So let's do this.
01:16You might win and get your dreams come true.
01:18But I also might win.
01:20And if I win, then you get nothing.
01:22And it reminded me a lot of, I don't know, breakups and relationships.
01:26And I was also just, it was the time of my life where I was very superstitious
01:30because I was going crazy.
01:33It just felt like a song that encapsulated the entire album.
01:43A lot of the feelings that I hit on the album all get, I don't know, summed up in Vodka Cranberry.
01:49It felt like the right song to kind of give people a taste of what's going to be on the whole thing.
01:55I think I have been around on earth long enough to know that I am so entirely unspecial and not unique in any way whatsoever.
02:06And I think that when it comes to things that we experience in life, we all feel the same things.
02:15And even like super niche stuff like someone wearing one specific hat over and over and over and it's a polo cap is like so un-unique to me.
02:28There are so many people on earth who also wear that polo cap.
02:33So to me, I'm like, I can get as specific as I want in any song because I know that I don't matter and that I'm just like everyone else.
02:42One thing that I did a lot while I was working on the album was go back to Texas.
02:53My best friend Ashley still lives back home there.
02:56And every time I was back, I felt like I remembered a part of me that was so huge that I'd forgotten.
03:03So I had to film those music videos in Texas because it needed to be rooted visually in a place where I actually grew up
03:11and where I felt like I actually was myself.
03:14And it was so surreal and strange being back in my home state doing these videos because it was like,
03:23Oh, well, when I'm here, I'm normally just like Texas me, but now I'm like filming these videos.
03:28But also these videos are so indicative of my own actual life.
03:32It was like so meta and strange and awesome and truly magical.
03:45Caramel is about romanticizing the past.
03:48I think that in any breakup, if you give it enough time, I think in most breakups, obviously excluding a few,
03:55can kind of trick yourself into thinking that the time was a little bit better than it actually was.
04:01And the whole song is me kind of looking back at like little things, you know, like cigarette breath.
04:05Like cigarette breath is so nasty.
04:08Ew.
04:09But then give it enough time and you smell cigarette breath on someone and all of a sudden all these memories rush back
04:17and you're like, oh, yeah, like cups of coffee and and like, I don't know, maple syrup
04:23and like all these feelings that I had around cigarette breath.
04:27It's about looking back at something and over time the memories have caramelized and become sweeter than they actually were.
04:35And then you kind of wish that you could have them back.
04:45I write every song by myself in my bed or the floor.
04:51Sometimes I get all my blankets and I put them on the floor on it.
04:54All I need is a bed.
04:56I can write in any bed, but it's usually has to be a bed.
05:00And then I bring them to my producer, Dan Negro, and then we produce them in his garage.
05:09So that's that's the vibe.
05:11Pretty simple.
05:13I've been doing that since I was 18.
05:16And it's just my favorite thing on earth to do.
05:19Yeah, I've made my entire career with Dan.
05:24And I think the biggest thing for me that I've learned from him is he's always encouraged me to make mistakes and to be myself and follow my gut.
05:37And he is extremely diligent and really, really, really fucking cares, which it's hard to find in life.
05:48If you meet someone who really cares about something, that's a really great, special person.
05:54You should keep them around.
05:55Thanks, Dan.
05:56I think me, Olivia, and Chappell can all agree.
06:00I'm not going to put words in their mouth, but I'm going to make this statement.
06:03I think we all wish that we made So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings.
06:09I can't even say the title. Imagine me trying to write it.
06:12So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings by Caroline Polacek is the song that we're all like, God damn it.
06:19That is such a banger.
06:20Oh my God, that fucking song is so, so good.
06:24And if you haven't streamed So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings by Caroline Polacek.
06:31What the fuck is wrong with you?
06:33So hot you're hurting my feelings.
06:36I mean, I feel like no matter who you are, whether you like are in school or you're like at your first job,
06:44it's so important to have people who you relate to and can kind of confide in.
06:49And obviously Liv has been the best friend.
06:53She gives great advice.
06:55And I feel like anyone who's listened to Sour or Guts can attest that she is a great advice giver.
07:03Our love is a threat and I'm nauseous scares me to death.
07:10It was funny. When I was writing my first album, my A&R had written down all the times that I mentioned dying.
07:17And he was like, you need to get this number. You've mentioned dying like 20 times.
07:22Like we need to get dying down to like 10 times.
07:26But I think with nauseous, it was just another moment where I was like, there's no other way to put it than you've scared me to death.
07:33Like the thought of having to be vulnerable right now is terrifying and I don't want to do it.
07:38And you're so wonderful that I know that if I let you in and if I let you really love me, you could really, truly devastate me.
07:47It's very cathartic and very like, I don't know. It helps me immensely.
08:00I think sometimes things are painful in the moment and then having 20,000 people scream it back at you really does make you kind of forget how bad something was.
08:13So I feel very lucky and I'm just glad people are willing to come to shows and scream with me.
08:20I think people can show up in their jammies if they want to.
08:23I'll probably be in my jammies a little bit on stage as well.
08:26So I hope that some people wear jammies, but I hope that people wear whatever they want and just feel like they're having a good time.
08:33I named it the Wishbone Pajama Show because I wrote so much of the album in bed
08:38that it felt like I needed to kind of bring like the feelings that I had while I was in bed on stage.
08:46Because everyone knows like the best day of school ever was always Pajama Day.
08:50And I kind of just want like Pajama Day every day of my life.
08:54Fans can expect to go on a journey and simultaneously and one night.
08:59Cry, lose your mind laughing.
09:05Scream, lose your voice.
09:08Hopefully pee a little in your pants.
09:10That's all.
09:11Everything comes back around.
09:14I still feel like the class clown.
09:17Class clowns, I think class clown might be my favorite on the album.
09:21To me it scratches an itch in a song that I haven't heard before that I've always felt,
09:29which is this feeling of like, there's no other way to put it than gesturing.
09:35I think that in life you spend your whole life kind of like becoming someone or trying to be someone,
09:43trying to be a version of yourself that's presentable or better or entertaining or funny or cool or all these things.
09:52And I've always felt like my whole entire life has been me kind of gesturing to people.
10:02I always try to, I've been trying to explain it to people as this feeling of like,
10:08when you're at a dinner party and you feel kind of out of place and you make a joke and everyone laughs.
10:15And in that moment there's like this brief second where you are surrounded by everyone laughing
10:24and you know in that moment that you are truly invisible.
10:28Like you have successfully distracted everyone from the fact that you exist.
10:33And that's what I feel like I do all the time.
10:36I'm covered in all these layers of sarcasm.
10:39But then at the end of the day you listen to the album and like, there's nothing funny about it.
10:50I started writing songs because I was lonely.
10:52I didn't have friends.
10:54Are you surprised?
10:55And I just wanted someone to talk to and when I put those songs up online,
10:59I was hoping for somebody to tell me that I wasn't alone.
11:03And then thousands of people told me that I wasn't alone.
11:07So I feel very grateful and very seen.
11:11And my fans should know that they're seen and that's a threat.
