On Friday's edition of Felger and Mazz, the guys were joined by Chris Gasper of the Boston Globe. While discussing Drake Maye's performance in the Patriots joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings, Gasper explains how Maye's turnover free sessions should be considered a major win for New England.

00:00all right that was uh greg bedard earlier in the week on drake may expressing some reservations
00:05uh about the young quarterback i know gasper didn't love that commentary when he heard it
00:10sort of ties into what chris's opening take is with the patriots and his reason for optimism
00:13gasper the floor is yours oh thank you yeah no i mean was was that greg bedard talking or was
00:19that josh mcdaniels talking why why do you go there why do you do that no because i'm just
00:24saying i mean i i think and i'm not ripping bedard in that way that sounds a little i'm not
00:29but that sounds about the way josh mcdaniels would look at it in terms of wanting the quarterback to
00:35respond in that manner and i think part of the challenge for josh is to be able to reach a
00:41quarterback that maybe has a little bit different demeanor than what he's used to dealing with you
00:46have to understand if you're talking about tom brady or even mac jones right those are guys that
00:51were doubted and derided for a good portion of their career so they had that fire underneath them
00:58to prove it every single time drake may was a big time recruit drake may went to north carolina he
01:03was the chosen one drake may going into his final year at north carolina people thought he could be
01:07the number one overall pick and take that from caleb williams so it's a different it's a different type
01:12of persona and demeanor of a quarterback that you have to be able to reach that doesn't mean
01:18drake may is entitled but it means that he might have a level of certitude and confidence
01:22that those other guys didn't and it's based on what your football experience is that doesn't mean
01:28that you don't care but you could show it in a different way and i'll certainly say this i would
01:32rather have a quarterback who i think the last couple of days in minnesota and i haven't been
01:37there but from what i've read under some challenging circumstances has performed well hasn't thrown a
01:42hissy fit has shown emotional equanimity rather than what i saw from mac jones you know shedding tears on
01:49the bench and obviously displaying his emotions on his sleeve to the point where you could tell that
01:55he was unnerved or bothered so i would rather see that but if we're going to compare every quarterback
02:00and their ability to compete in their competitive fire to tom brady then they're all going to fall
02:05short not just well i mean yes yes and no they're unfair comparisons but i i think it's all right to hold
02:11brady up as a standard and teach it that way i mean when you when you um teach science you don't teach
02:19them some schlub uh nobody scientist you teach them isaac newton right like that's what you do
02:25so when you say where this analogy was going well yeah well i mean but but that's what i mean like
02:29when you teach a u.s history you don't spend time on some crappy schlub court uh president you teach
02:36him abraham lincoln right so if we're going to talk about how we want a quarterback to be it's okay to
02:40say this is what brady did i don't think that's unreasonable i mean you don't how dare you disparage
02:44chester ray arthur you know what i mean you the you you hold up the greats for a reason like this
02:51is how you're supposed to do it or that's that's the ideal so like i don't have a big problem with
02:56that uh i don't you you want him to be closer to tom brady than mac jones you want to be closer
03:01to abraham lincoln than chester arthur chester arthur yeah i forgot about that one the a felger come on
03:06jesus but i understand what you're talking about and and you're absolutely right in terms of the
03:11teaching film right the teaching film yes i want you to try and do it the way tom brady did it but
03:16i think to ask him to have tom brady's comportment and demeanor that's not really fair and mac jones
03:21was a lot closer in demeanor to tom brady than i think drake may is and that that didn't work out
03:26because he didn't have the talent to back it up you know you can have that sort of brady manning type
03:32demeanor marino had a little bit although i thought marino took it to an annoying level where it just
03:37looked like he was blaming his teammates all the time but you can have that sort of demeanor when
03:42you have the talent to back it up if you don't then you just sort of look like a petulant child
03:46but chris don't you agree that that drake may is going to be defined his his greatness will rise or
03:53fall on kind of the intangibles like the physical stuff is is there it's going to be about like all
03:58that other stuff don't you think toughness leadership decision making you know whatever you put into that
04:03bucket of other stuff he's got the physical traits yeah i think processing for me is bigger than again
04:10what his persona is can he process it can he see it quickly can he make the right decisions can he do
04:15that you know the fact that he's not chucking his helmet or firing a clipboard i'm okay with that you
04:22know i don't think that's necessarily the i don't think everybody has to be that way to be a great
04:27quarterback i don't i really don't and okay go ahead well so as it relates to that again the good
04:34news coming out of minnesota was i know you just sort of referenced it but but give me more on that
04:38you're encouraged because you think may hung in there despite all these other things going on
04:42around him yeah i think overall from from this is my takeaway i think overall these joint practices
04:48were a win for the patriots because of the way drake may performed because i think this is a
04:53reasonable approximation of what it's going to be like for him during the season shaky offensive line
04:58in front of him inconsistent separation from receivers and a lot on his plate in terms of
05:04trying to make the offense go and so for him to be able to go through those two days
05:09not turn the football over be productive make plays under pressure i think that bodes well for them
05:16because that's he is the single biggest determining factor his ability to elevate this offense and to be
05:22able to elevate what's around him and to not let what's around him drag him down but for him to be
05:28able to push it up will be the single biggest determining factor i think in their success
05:33this season and he got a taste of that we got a taste of that in egan minnesota and it seems like he
05:40came out of that and he did a pretty good job i mean frable talked about it before yesterday's
05:43practice the idea of you know being out there in a bleep storm and not making it worse and being able to
05:50function and he was able to do that as the offensive line was crumbling around him as you
05:56had receivers that maybe aren't creating the separation they should have against a you know
06:00viking secondary that is not exactly decorated but that's what it's going to be for him i think a good
06:06chunk of the year and it's really going to be on may and also josh mcdaniels because mcdaniels
06:11will scheme it up i mean he will scheme people open he's very good at that it's going to be on
06:15those two guys and their relationship to make this offense go and to improve this offense from
06:20what we saw last year when they were dead last in the nfl and passing yards so i'm fine with you
06:25saying it's a net win or anyone saying it's a net win i i'm i am frustrated the the line is still what
06:31the line is and the receiver group is still what the receiver group is i just i think that's a joke
06:35that they've been at it this long and have had those many resources to improve it and they can't
06:39improve it so like that frustrates and it should frustrate everyone but the thing you just described
06:44though chris is my expectation because that's the way that i think that it works i mean just look at
06:49it it's it's very very rare that a good quarterback has a horrible team like and you're the biggest
06:57proponent of this that i know that the quarterback raises all bolts you know a human spackle and it's
07:03this is the way that it works and if you have a bad offensive line if you have a good quarterback or a
07:07smart quarterback or a good decision maker he gets rid of the ball and a good coach helps scheme
07:12around those but but just stick with the quarterback i define you i defy you to find me
07:18a good quarterback who had a last place team and is drafting in the top three and has a blast in the
07:24league offense it just doesn't work that way so if drake may is good like we think he's good
07:28that almost in and of itself if he is what we think he is should lift them i think to the middle of
07:34the pack that's you know that's where i think that happens all the time frankly yeah and just
07:39for a point of clarification i think it's the elite quarterbacks that do that human spackle elevate i
07:45think you can have a good like to me jared goff is good he's not great he's good but i mean you see
07:50what he's doing in detroit and and a lot of it is about what's around him and they had some bad years
07:55there even when he first got there but as the talent around him got better you can see that if you put
08:00him in a good situation i think that's most of the good quarterbacks you know for example if i
08:04like jalen hurts but if you put him on this team are you telling me they're automatically a nine or
08:09ten win team no so i mean so so i i don't know how we i think i said top quarterbacks elite
08:14quarterbacks you said you said good so for me it's elite it's like yeah it's got to be better than
08:19good five or six fine they can do that fair enough uh and i really kind of say well top 10 but
08:26hurts is a top 10 guy for sure would he uh you don't think hurts is an elevator i don't i mean
08:32do you think dak prescott's an elevator he could be yeah he's because he's an elite passer
08:37it just doesn't all add up i know there's something that doesn't add up with him
08:42and i i agree with that but his passing is elite are you you don't think you don't think he's a
08:47premium elite no no i mean i agree with you i think he is an elite passer but when the running game
08:52got taken away from him and there were injuries on the line and they didn't really have another
08:56receiver besides cd lamb you know that team wasn't very good so i it's the elite quarterback so i guess
09:03the question is you know what kind of jump are we expecting like was was josh allen and i know josh
09:08allen made the playoffs in year two but was he an elite quarterback in year two no no no no i think
09:14that's you know so i i think you can but you can you can turn into that which allen has if you get
09:20some help you know so this is the thing i'm with you like in terms of may if he can get the
09:24processing thing and not be panicky and what's going to be a shaky offensive line and realize
09:28now rather than before you get to the regular season you're not going to have a lot of clean
09:31pockets but he's actually comfortable with that like good that's i'd much rather that than him
09:35being a helmet thrower and like red ass but but i you know chris we just parsed this i i think good
09:41is again define good we defined it as top 10 if you had if you had jalen hurts on a bad team i think
09:47he gets you to the middle of the pack i'm not telling you super bowls i'm not talking about
09:50that i'm talking about getting to the middle of the pack getting to a team that is uh at or above
09:58500 and an offense that is in the teens we looked this up i might say we boston sports imp our buddy
10:05looked it up the last five years every top 10 quarterback in rating had at least a a record at or above
10:14500 and their offense was at least in the teens except for one i think it was like 49 out of the
10:1950 teams with one of the top 10 rated passers in the league had a at least a good team so like i
10:27sort of stand by that i don't think you need to be elite to take a team from four to eight wins you
10:31need to be good yeah i guess i would ask what was in and i know we don't have the answer on hand but i
10:36mean what was the supporting cast for those teams well they couldn't all be good they couldn't all be
10:42around what was around that guy i'm sure there were a bunch of teams that had crap i'm sure there
10:47were i'm sure there were teams that had bad offensive lines or bad receiver groups i'm trying
10:51to call it up right now uh as did they have both though you just said or did they have both because
10:55he has both how many of those guys had both like joe burrow had a bad offensive line but he had
11:00jamar chase out there right and so he had a true i mean this team doesn't i'm not trying to make
11:05excuses for me i need to see progress from but to me it sounds like you're expecting him to go
11:10from what he was last year to like elite in one year nope i expect i think it's gonna be tough
11:16i expect him to be uh around the top the top the 10th best quarterback in the league okay statistically
11:23and as such to bring him to the middle of the pack and i expect the same out of rabel in the
11:28coaching too by the way i'd say the same thing look year in year out at the bottom of the league
11:33it's not just horrible talent it's the garbage coaches the good coaches don't finish at the
11:39bottom of the league so it's you never see uh you don't ever see tomlin down there not even close
11:45you don't see harbaugh down there you don't see you never see belichick down there oh wait oh you
11:49do you see he was exposed yes he was exposed um so no i i think between the quarterback and the coach
11:57you at least get to the middle of the pack if those guys are what we think they are yes absolutely
12:03and i think i mean i think we're on the same page i mean i expect him to be a
12:07seven eight win team that that's fine yeah i mean i don't think there's really that much
12:11so you're up to eight you're up to eight you were you've been in just in the recent past i feel like
12:16i've gotten yelled at by you for saying they're going to win double their win total no no no i i
12:22thought you well you i thought you and you corrected me i thought you were like 10 11 you said you're
12:27nine right seven to nine and now since you want one number not a range because i know mccarthy
12:32thinks i've straddled the fence too much okay nine right nine is the number here look okay here's
12:37here's the felger big board nine is the number that's my expectation if they go above that they've
12:42overachieved if they hit nine that's kind of what i expected if they win seven or eight i'll say
12:48a little bit below but okay decent progress six or below disaster they f the thing up
12:55okay so that's it six fail f seven to eight okay but still not what i was expecting nine okay that
13:07that we're at that above it great yeah i just want to say if you think you know nine wins then i think
13:13you should be you should feel good about what drake may did in these joint practices now let's see what
13:18he does in the game because the first preseason game was certainly less than impressive but for them
13:22to get to nine he's going to have to do what he did in these joint practices it's going to be a lot
13:26of it on him and having to overcome you know some of the stuff around him to be able to elevate if
13:32they're going to get to nine
13:32you
