National Guard presence in Washington D.C. brings relief to some, worry to others

The presence of National Guard troops stationed outside Union Station in Washington, D.C., makes some feel happy and others conflicted and even intimidated. US President Donald Trump said on Aug. 13 he would ask the Republican-controlled Congress to extend federal control of Washington's city police force beyond 30 days, escalating his campaign to exert presidential power over the nation's capital. Trump also asserted that any congressional action could serve as a model for other US cities. He has previously threatened to expand his efforts to other Democratic-run cities such as Chicago that he claims have failed to address crime. Trump also announced on Monday that he was deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city, a tactic he employed in Los Angeles in June when he mobilized thousands of Guard soldiers and US Marines over the objections of state and local officials in response to protests over his administration's immigration raids.

00:00For the most part, I feel like it's just going to create more animosity versus
00:13community. And that's what obviously if we're trying to make things better,
00:17that's what we need is more community, not us obviously having dictatorship out
00:22here. And it's only making people feel more disconnected from the city for
00:27some reason. Like this is just so much today. I wasn't expecting to see them.
00:32Mostly we've been saying just the police. There were times when I felt like,
00:37especially under previous times I've been here, threatened. You know, I felt like
00:44because of my basically conservative political stance that I'm actually sometimes targeted.
00:52And when they're here, I'm not worried about that. I don't have any worries at
00:56all concerning that. So it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I'm happy to see it in some ways.
01:05We think it's just like an intimidation and also it's free publicity. Do you know what I mean?
01:26Like they put them out here and it looked, the administration puts them out here and it looks
01:30like, oh my God, we're, we're clamping down and everything. Well, where's the crime here? Where,
01:35where's the crime? You know? And I feel really bad for these people, these national guard people,
01:40because they're put in a horrible situation and they don't deserve it. They don't deserve it. And
01:46who's paying for this? Who's paying for this? And here's my, my message to the red states. You're paying for all this.
02:00I'm just joking, you're paying for it. And you're paying for it. And this is a medium-school service.
02:12This is a medium-sized idea of the crime. You're paying for it. And you're paying for it.
02:15It's the silver-sized idea of the crime. I'm very thankful to my kids and the subject is not
02:18amazing because this is a big deal to me. There's a lot of people who have been doing this for you because
02:23of the crime. You've been coming to the crime. You're probably going to be on the crime. You're probably going to beias
