00:00Earlier this year, the 20-year-old challenged his punishment here at the Court of Appeal in Brisbane.
00:08Last year, he was sentenced to 14 years in detention, ordered to serve 70% of that after pleading guilty to Ms Lovell's murder.
00:17He admitted to fatally stabbing her on her front lawn when he was 17, shortly after breaking into her North Lakes home in 2022.
00:25His lawyers argued the sentence was manifestly excessive, and today the Court of Appeal ruled in his favour by majority.
00:33Two Court of Appeal judges found the original sentencing judge failed to consider he had special circumstances when determining when he should be released.
00:43By not taking into consideration his early guilty pleas, his depraved upbringing and rehabilitation prospects, it was determined youth justice laws were misapplied, causing a legal error.
00:54His period of time in custody has now been reduced to 60% of his 14-year term.
01:00I'm deeply disappointed in this decision. I've spoken with Lee Lovell. It was a terrible, terrible call. He's obviously extremely distressed.
01:11This is a day that he and his family shouldn't have to go through. I am seeking advice to see if I can or will appeal to the High Court in relation to this sentence.
01:24The man will now be released in 2030, with time already served.
