Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne wouldn’t rate their painting skills too highly, so it’s anybody’s guess how well they can capture each other on canvas. In this episode of “Portrait Mode,” the ‘Platonic’ co-stars share their most Canadian and Aussie traits (ketchup chips and Vegemite included), reflect on why they rarely turn down roles, and give a nod to the actors who passed on the parts they’ve made iconic. They also put their friendship to the test in a rapid-fire round of “Platonic or Not?,” debating whether 3AM texts, Paris getaways, and shared hotel rooms can really stay in the friend zone. Seth may have tapped into his inner nine-year-old for his painting, but Rose delivered something surprisingly accurate.

00:00It's not like I've had a career where I'm working with these, like, legendary actors who are, like, imparting their wisdom on me.
00:04I'm working with, like, Jason Segel, you know?
00:07Hi, I'm Rose Byrne.
00:09And I'm Seth Rogen.
00:10And this is Portrait Mode with Harper's Bazaar.
00:16How do I think I'm going to do with this?
00:19It's anybody's guess.
00:21I would rate my painting skills pretty low.
00:24Poor painting skills.
00:25Bad painting skills.
00:30I've already ruined this painting.
00:33This is not going well.
00:34I apologize, Rose, in advance.
00:36I apologize for mine in advance.
00:39Seth, what was your first impression of Rose?
00:42My first impression of Rose?
00:43It was like this.
00:44Good eye, mate.
00:45Good eye, game.
00:46A boomerang.
00:47That was my first impression of Rose.
00:49And it's still my impression of Rose when asked to do an impression of Rose.
00:56G'day, mate.
00:56Rose, what's something fans would be surprised to learn about Seth?
01:03He plays larger-than-life characters sometimes, and he's actually low-key.
01:07I'm much smaller than life.
01:08Yeah, he's, like, low-key.
01:10I think he was a shyness to him, and I think, you know, when you're very well-known and beloved,
01:15people can project a lot onto you.
01:17That is true.
01:18And also, you know, I say this all the time, but he's Canadian.
01:21I am Canadian.
01:21Just letting everybody know.
01:22She says it all the time.
01:23She's always saying how I'm Canadian.
01:25Just letting everybody know.
01:28Seth, what's the most Canadian thing about you?
01:31Most Canadian thing about me?
01:34I enjoy ketchup chips.
01:35That is a Canadian cuisine.
01:37I'd say smoking weed is a pretty Canadian trait in many ways.
01:42It is federally legal in Canada, as it is not in America, yeah.
01:45I'm trying to be polite and cordial.
01:48Rose, what's the most Aussie thing about you?
01:51The most Aussie thing about me is I eat Vegemite toast every day.
01:54In my trailer, I will set up a toaster with butter, sourdough bread, and Vegemite toast.
01:59I mean, it is tragic.
02:00And she's never once offered me a Vegemite sandwich.
02:04I can.
02:05You say the word.
02:07Say the word.
02:08What's a role you regret turning down?
02:13I don't know if I have a role I necessarily regret turning down.
02:15Honestly, I haven't turned down that many roles in my life.
02:18I feel like they're all coming my way.
02:20I don't have one of those stories where it's like,
02:21oh, I could have been Star-Lord in Marvel.
02:24Like, nope, don't have any of those.
02:26I'm often the person they come to when someone else turns it down.
02:29That's who you want to be.
02:30That's the sweet spot.
02:31I want to thank all the incredible actresses who passed on their pass.
02:35And I have stepped in.
02:36So, we'll be here all day if I feel like I'm going to go down that road.
02:44Of all the characters in play, whose style resembles your own the most?
02:48You know what, Sylvia?
02:49It's not that different from what I wear.
02:51It's just more put together, but definitely my own style.
02:54You dress a little cooler than Sylvia, I would say, in real life.
02:57If I do, I think you got it.
02:58Because I'll see you come to set in your real clothes.
03:00I'll be like, oh, that's a cool jacket.
03:01Sylvia would go for that.
03:03Rachel Rose's films is your favorite.
03:09Oh, that's a toughie.
03:10I like a lot of her films.
03:12The Danny Boyle film, Daylight.
03:14Sunshine.
03:15Sunshine.
03:15Close.
03:16Sunshine.
03:18Bridesmaids, got to be one of my favorites.
03:20I just watched 28 Weeks Later for the first time.
03:23And I got to say, I really enjoyed it.
03:25Another great Rose Brown performance.
03:26But Damages is my favorite, which is a television show.
03:30I mean, I remember when I first saw Seth in Knocked Up.
03:33I loved it and him and was very struck by him on screen and thought, oh, my God, who the hell is that guy?
03:38He's hysterical.
03:39And then everybody knew who he was.
03:42I love The Fablemans.
03:43Very sweet.
03:44And I love seeing Seth in a really different genre.
03:47It was very exciting.
03:49Steve Jobs.
03:50Steve Jobs.
03:50I love Steve Jobs.
03:51What's the best advice that Polestar has given you?
03:57That's a good question.
03:58That's a good question.
04:00Implicitly you're saying actors give good advice to anyone.
04:02That's like a thing I would like to hear someone tell me, too.
04:05Seth?
04:06I don't know.
04:07It's your question.
04:08I know.
04:10I don't think an actor I've worked with has really given me, like, advice necessarily.
04:16And if it is, it hasn't necessarily resonated with me.
04:19And it's not like I've had a career where I'm working with these, like, legendary actors who are, like, imparting their wisdom on me.
04:23I'm working with, like, Jason Siegel, you know?
04:29What is one line that fans spoke to you the most?
04:32People just want to smoke weed with me.
04:34It's not a specific line of dialogue.
04:36People aren't coming up with a specific thing.
04:37And I kind of thank God I've never had, like, a thing.
04:40Like, because I have a lot of friends who have had that thing that everyone says to them.
04:43I'd probably be more successful if I did have, like, a catchphrase.
04:46Now we're quickly going to do a rapid round section called platonic or not.
04:52Okay, great.
04:52First up is taking a trip to Paris.
04:55Like, with a friend?
04:56It can be platonic.
04:57I've taken trips to Paris with platonic friends.
05:00So I'm proof positive that it's possible.
05:02Yeah, I have to.
05:02I've taken it with a, oh, yeah.
05:04Platonic.
05:05Sharing a hotel room.
05:07Yeah, it's a tough one.
05:08I've done it, for sure, with plenty of platonic friends.
05:12But I think if I would say to Bobby, hey, listen, me and my friend, Jim, I'm going to go share a hotel room.
05:18You don't want to say that, necessarily.
05:20Bobby would be like...
05:21You might be hit with some resistance.
05:23How about you and Jim don't share a hotel room?
05:25Being the first person to wish someone a happy birthday.
05:28I think that's totally platonic and a good thing for a friend to do.
05:31Oh, yeah.
05:32Totally fine.
05:33Yep.
05:33Texting at 3 a.m.
05:35I think you can text a platonic friend at 3 a.m.
05:37I'll let you text at 3 a.m.
05:39Time difference.
05:40Could be anything.
05:40Yeah, it could be anything.
05:41Could be your friend in Australia.
05:43Exactly.
05:44It could be in Melbourne.
05:46Yeah.
05:46Getting outfit approval.
05:48Getting outfit approval can be completely platonic.
05:51Me and my friend Evan are always doing press together, and we have a history of very much mismatching our levels of dress.
05:58And so, I try to be on the same page, for sure.
06:01Getting outfit approval, fine.
06:02I mean, I pay someone to do that.
06:04Yeah, exactly.
06:05I got someone on the payroll telling me if my outfit's good or not.
06:12Ready?
06:20I look like I'm on The Simpsons.
06:22A little bit.
06:22I think yours is a much prettier painting, I would say.
06:26No, I like the thick.
06:27That's really cool.
06:28I like that.
06:29I like that.
06:29I like this.
06:30I like this, too.
06:31I kind of like a Wes Anderson character in yours, I feel like, a little bit.
06:34It's nice.
06:35I'm very symmetrical.
06:36I wanted to just really capture the colors of the suit today, the forest green.
06:41I feel like I could have been a little bolder with my style, but, you know, I wanted to get the signature look.
06:48I think, you know, Seth has a very signature silhouette.
06:51I think it really captures me.
06:53I think the palette is nice.
06:55I like the color of the hair and the beard.
06:57I think it's really nice.
06:58I think you'd think, like, a dumb nine-year-old painted this if you saw it at your friend's house.
07:04Like, a not very talented child produced this.
07:07I was sort of looking at you from the side, so it's like a profile.
07:10It's a profile piece.
07:11That's my profile for sure.
07:11I would say, that's your profile.
07:13Anyone would see that and say, Rose Verne.
07:15I really know what he thinks.
07:17I think your face is pink.
07:18Exactly.
07:19Thank you so much for watching.
07:21And please check out Platonic Season 2.
07:23We'll see you next time.
