The Express & Star talk to West Midlands mayor Richard Parker and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, during their visit to New Cross Hospital, to see how AI and robotics are improving patient care.
Transcript
00:00okay so you've had the chance to see the technology here today what do you make of it
00:04but look it's fantastic technology it's medium-edge technology uh we've talked to the surgeons here
00:09about how uh the precision surgery that this robot behind us can perform is improving uh
00:16the care of patients and uh improving their recovery times and it's driving efficiencies
00:22and it's the future it looks at the uh sort of future of the nhs as well so obviously
00:27suffered over the years but uh with technology like this there are signs of improving aren't there
00:31look there's innovation has got a massive part to play in improving and productivity and the public
00:37services and the nhs and improving patient care uh we've looked at robotic surgery we've also spoken
00:44to the chief executive about how ai is improving um improving uh the documentation of patient care
00:52too and also this morning i've been with the secretary of state to visit a fantastic life
00:59science with businesses in birmingham that is also looking at how we can improve patient care through
01:04uh the testing of um of urine samples for better cancer um integrating these processes in nhs
01:11as a possibility to improve care to patients speed up productivity and ensure that we're
01:18delivering better care and improving people's lives and you've had a chance of an actual look at the
01:23process of how that technology works can you get your head around it when it's actually being used
01:27on human beings uh i could because i did that that modest experiment this morning um when we were here
01:32but um it's phenomenal talking to the surgeons about how this technology is now being embedded in
01:39surgical procedures uh and the potential is enormous uh and i hope when i talk to the surgeons here it's
01:46going to attract a lot more people into the nhs and these roles those people interested in technology
01:51can play a good a big part in the future of the nhs and um for yourself as the the mayor of the
01:56region uh what work can you do personally to help the progression of the nhs well i want to promote
02:02this sector the life sciences and healthcare sector is really important to this region it employs tens
02:07and tens of thousands of people and it provides opportunities for people from all different
02:12backgrounds those with high skills and those interests and technology um and what i want to
02:16do the west meadows is create a life sciences center of excellence here so we can grow our economy
02:21attract investment create lots of jobs and also i want the public services in this region to be the
02:27best uh provide the best care uh in any place in the country so you've had a chance to have a look
02:32at the technology here and what do you make of it and it's interesting but it's it's incredible
02:36because you get a sense of how much impact it has on people we're standing in a room that is completely
02:42filled with machinery with technology but never forget the heart of this is people and because
02:50of this machinery people will come in they will have a surgical experience where the incision will
02:55be smaller the procedure will be faster and the time in which they get home will be more rapid than
03:02ever before so it means that people will be able to recover in the place where they want to be
03:07surrounded by the people that they love being around and the whole experience is less sort of
03:12anxiety inducing and the pathway to recovery is faster so yes there's a lot of metal here a lot
03:19of technology here but don't forget this is a really human experience that we're witnessing and
03:25you've got the chance to actually have a go at it as well so but can you wrap your head around this
03:29when you look at what is actually going into it i can never fight wrap my head around what it is
03:35surgeons do and how they do it and the the sheer amount of skill that it takes and and also the
03:40courage it takes to go into somebody else's body and do what they do to make us better again but to
03:46see the harmony with which certain surgeons are now working with technology with robotics uh also
03:53involving ai as well uh is is quite extraordinary i've always said that ai technology is delivering
04:00a more human experience and there's nothing more human than helping a surgeon to become more uh to
04:07fully release their potential to become the entirely skilled profession that they want to be with less
04:14tiny little areas which i know would cause them a lot of anxiety when they go home in the evening
04:19it's a very human thing that's being delivered right across the board and don't forget also in
04:23this hospital they are using ai to make the paperwork more efficient so it means that some of the notes
04:30that are taken through a patient's pathway to the hospital are now coming down from hours to being
04:35done in less than one minute then of course humans are always overlooking this and they're always making
04:42sure that it's correct but this means again a more human experience more time with doctors with
04:48patients less time with doctors looking at paperwork and filling in forms and less time spent trying
04:54to decipher the doctor's writing at the end of it so again technology being embraced right here in
05:00wolverhamton wolverhamton hospital in a way that's really quite inspiring and innovation and ai and
05:05technology is obviously part of the process of reviving and regenerating the nhs as well but there is
05:11no question that technology is a drive productivity gains right through the nhs that sounds quite distant and
05:17quite numeric again this means that more patients can be seen it means that people working in the
05:22nhs are doing more of what they came into the nhs for and that's supporting patients making people
05:29healthy again and the more that we start using and embracing the latest technology because it's not
05:33just mechanical technology here it's also other parts of life sciences this morning i was in birmingham
05:39looking at a life sciences company which is being able to test for early stage cancers from
05:45urine samples rather than doing invasive tests which are very time consuming and really burdensome
05:52on the nhs so right across the board from trying to prevent people coming into hospital in the first
05:57place and when people do come into hospital making sure that you've got clinicians and staff who are
06:02more focused on you and less focused on paperwork and then when if you do need surgery that surgery is
06:08swifter more precise and it's a better experience for everyone when you back home quicker it works for
06:13everyone and um if the situation came that you'd have to have this sort of surgery i'm assuming you
06:18would have complete faith in this and the process of it there is no question i've actually stood in a
06:23theater with somebody being two people being operated on uh in the last few weeks and i saw firsthand
06:30uh how the surgeons are embracing the technology but how the surgeons talk about it how they say it
06:38enables them to be more intricate work how it enables them to see things uh that they weren't able to see
06:44before uh when you're just using the human eye looking straight in these are big advance advancements
06:51and i would have absolute confidence in fact if i were in a situation i would hope that i would be in a
06:56situation of being able to benefit from this this technology uh in the first place uh that's why i
07:01feel a real sense of urgency alongside the health secretary and the prime minister to get this
07:07technology out there benefiting everyone from every background in every part of our country not just
07:13keeping this kind of real world-class technology for those people who can afford it
