Cincinnati Bengals React to Preseason Loss to Philadelphia Eagles
Transcript
00:00I thought it went pretty well, considering everything, you know.
00:07Today was good.
00:09Made a mistake here and there, but overall, pretty good day.
00:13Pretty good day.
00:14How happy were you, Shamar, that you were able to get in on a lot of different situations
00:18and also play all over the defensive line, it seemed?
00:23It was felt good, you know.
00:25I feel like I'm getting the playbook down.
00:27Everything's slowing down a little bit for me, you know.
00:29But the first couple days out here, it was kind of like my mind was in a blender.
00:32But now I feel pretty good.
00:34How do you feel from a conditioning standpoint?
00:36Do you still feel like you have a ways to go,
00:38or do you feel pretty comfortable where you're at from a conditioning standpoint?
00:41I don't feel that bad, actually.
00:43I feel pretty good, you know.
00:44Given that some wasn't out, but today I feel pretty good.
00:48Shamar, it seemed like you had a lot of moments where you were able to make an impact
00:52or almost make an impact.
00:53Is that encouraging for you in this game?
00:56I mean, of course, you know.
00:57You've got to build yourself up sometimes.
00:59You know, we've got to take every little win you get.
01:01So, hopefully next time, next week, I probably could get there faster, a little bit.
01:07Did you have a moment when you kind of had to settle in and, you know,
01:10first couple of, you know, first snap in the pros,
01:13or did you take a minute to settle in, or were you good from the get-go?
01:19Oh, I think I was pretty good from the get-go.
01:24It wasn't too bad.
01:26I mean, but then if I wasn't ready to go for the first snap, after I got hit on the first snap,
01:30I was ready to go.
01:31So, you know, just got to get pushing him out a little bit.
01:34Tell us a little bit about that tackle, I think, on A.J. Dillon.
01:39Seemed like you crashed in from the edge and had a really nice loss there.
01:43I think I felt it more than he felt it.
01:46Like, he's a big boy.
01:48So, I got up my collarbone, everything in my shoulders was hurting.
01:52I don't know if he felt anything.
01:54He got up and just walked away.
01:55Is it a noticeable difference between practice and a game, even on the preseason level?
02:01Oh, yeah, for sure.
02:02I mean, in practice, you know, everybody knows it's not, like, 100% to the ground.
02:06So, now, like, you could just tag off with somebody and you could just play could be over.
02:11But now, you're, like, people are going to try to make you miss.
02:14People are going to try to run through your face.
02:16So, you got to be ready.
02:17You know, like, you got to bring it.
02:19We saw Trey Hendrickson talking to plenty of the guys up front.
02:21Did you have any conversations with him after coming off the field?
02:24Oh, yeah, the player where I almost had a sack, he was talking to me about, you know,
02:29how to finish a sack, to play a little bit faster, hopefully get in there next time.
02:33What was that advice that he gave you?
02:37He just gave me another move.
02:39He recommended me a move to use next time.
02:43Just how much more comfortable do you feel in this entire operation now, obviously,
02:47a week or so into training camp practices and with a preseason game under your belt?
02:52Oh, I feel a lot more comfortable, you know.
02:55You know, the playbook is slowing down for me.
02:57The gameplay is slowing down for me, you know.
02:59I feel like that's always good.
03:01You know, my first couple days here, everything was just, like, flying bullets.
03:05So, I was, like, trying to, like, I had, like, kind of, like, a lock in.
03:09So, but today was a lot better.
03:11Probably one of the best days so far.
03:12You mentioned your shoulder feeling okay now.
03:15Oh, yeah, I'm great.
03:15But in the moment, I feel like hitting, like, hitting a brick wall.
03:20Offensive line, and he said he was really pleased with how the first team looked at that first two drives.
03:25I know you were out there working.
03:26Yeah.
03:26You didn't see everything.
03:28But what did you think?
03:29It felt good.
03:30But, you know, to me, man, it's August.
03:32It's early.
03:33You know, there's always still a ton of room to improve.
03:35And so, you know, keeping Joe upright is our job and what's very important to us and being able to have an efficient run game as well.
03:43I think we did both of those pretty well.
03:45But fundamentally, there will still be some things for us to clean up, man.
03:48And that's a good sign.
03:49We talked so much about the fast start.
03:51It's probably overplayed.
03:52Orlando, I think we realized that.
03:53But it did seem significant to have Joe out there, Jamar out there, all those guys working for a couple of series.
04:00Yeah, it did.
04:00And, you know, these guys have been together this year all season, all many camp OTAs, through training camp so far, practically all the way in some of these preseason games that we'll be playing in.
04:10And, man, I think it's awesome.
04:12And it's only going to just show signs of growth.
04:14And our continuity and totality is only going to get better.
04:17Does it ever surprise you when you look up at the big board and you see Joe and Jamar doing what they're doing, that touchdown, that play's worked before, it works again today?
04:26Does it ever surprise you?
04:27Yeah, no, not at all.
04:28I mean, I think he caught a five-yard out and turned it into a big play.
04:32So that's what these guys are, man.
04:33That's what they do, that we do it on air.
04:35I see them do it on air.
04:36I see them do it in practice and in these preseason games, man.
04:39So it's a standard that they've set, that they've been working on even prior to me getting here.
04:44And it's only gotten better and more efficient.
04:46He played next to the rookie, Dylan Fairchild, tonight.
04:49Yep.
04:49How comfortable did he seem out there?
04:51Yeah, he seemed very comfortable, man.
04:52I think he did an amazing job coming in with it being his first real time under the lights against a talented defensive line that Philly has, man.
05:00You know, I think he did a really good job.
05:02He must take also a lot of pride in the productivity of the run game tonight.
05:06Yeah.
05:06And maybe a chance for a few more big runs.
05:09But the fact that you guys were able to get second and short a couple of times.
05:12Oh, yeah.
05:13Second and long.
05:14Yeah.
05:14No, it's so important, man.
05:15And I think when our offense is moving that efficiently and we're able to run the ball and execute in those situations, I think, man, only good things are going to, great things are going to happen for us.
05:24Through the air.
05:25Is that exactly what you were kind of expecting for game one?
05:28Not for the most part, man.
05:30We just go week and week.
05:31And whatever Zach calls or whatever the offense is, cooperate this week, that's what I'm going to run.
05:36And that's whatever it's going to take.
05:38Me running the ball, me catching the ball at the backfield, me doing the little things right.
05:41Was the speed and the physicality of the game kind of what you expected or was it a little different?
05:46It kind of surprised me.
05:48It wasn't too fast for me.
05:50Everything kind of slowed down in the second half.
05:51And, you know, just getting the little jitters out that I had because I haven't played football in a minute.
05:55But now since I played my first game, my first, excuse me, my first NFL game under me, it was great.
06:00Just getting back to the game of speed and then just learning my abilities.
06:04So are you feeling more confident after this one?
06:06Facts, for sure.
06:07One of your big plays, it seemed like to me, was a, I don't know, a blitz pickup, but certainly a block pickup on pass protection.
06:15Yes, sir.
06:15Charlie Jones had an 11-yard reception.
06:17How much pride do you take in making a play?
06:18I take a lot of pride.
06:19But that's just, you know, stunning a linebacker.
06:22Whatever I got to do to get the job done, that's something I, that's just taught, man.
06:25Just being, having violent hands, just doing one of my job at a high level.
06:30Was there a play tonight that you are going to take with you and try to play?
06:35Definitely.
06:36Man, I like all the run plays.
06:37I feel like I should have, I should have creased one of them.
06:39I'm mad I didn't.
06:40But probably the chop block or the, you know, the special teams plays.
06:44Those count too.
06:44The two tackles that I had and that kind of flipped the momentum for the defense.
06:48So it was good.
06:48The looks that, like, you know, that we were prepared to see.
06:52You know, the biggest thing was just go out there and play hard.
06:55See what you can see.
06:57Be able to read backfield sets and be able to play fast.
07:00There's a lot of fans that are excited about what you bring to the interior defensive line.
07:05It's a growing process, right?
07:07There's still time to get to the regular season.
07:09Do you feel like this D-line is on the right track?
07:11Most definitely.
07:13You know, we're coming together better every day.
07:15We're getting to know each other.
07:17We're getting to know each other working and what they like to do.
07:20You know, what the interiors like to do.
07:21So we can be able to communicate on the field and be on the same page.
07:24There is a lot of intrigue and excitement around Shamar Stewart.
07:28You've had a chance to be around him.
07:29He's moving left side, right side, interior.
07:31How dynamic can he be for this team?
07:33Yeah, he's good.
07:34We just want to know if he can cover.
07:36That's pretty much it.
07:38Other than that, like I've said before, he's naturally strong.
07:41He naturally got good talent, good awareness to the game already.
07:45All we just got to do is just get him up to speed on the small things and the details.
07:49And I feel like he's going to be a great player.
07:51Is that just a veteran pushing a young buck in some ways with your words?
07:55I mean, I feel like it's just the game of football.
07:58You know what I'm saying?
07:59Like, we got to give him a little crap.
08:02You know what I'm saying?
08:03Yeah, we got to praise him when he do good.
08:07So that's just the way it goes.
08:09What was your take on the first couple of the series on how you guys played?
08:12What was your...
08:15You know, they did a lot of things to get the ball into the C and B gaps.
08:22All we try to do is just, like, you know, just set the edge better.
08:27Be able to play those things, you know, after the snap.
08:30You know, it's just something that we didn't prepare for, like the unscouted looks.
08:35So we just, we see them.
08:38They happen.
08:39And during the game, we adjust so when we see it again, it won't happen again.
08:43What do you think you can do then into the next preseason game, either yourself or as a team?
08:49Just, I don't know.
08:52I feel like we just, me personally, I'm going to go with me personally first.
08:59Me personally, I just feel like I just need to, you know, use my hands a little bit more, release off blocks.
09:07Us as a defense, I think we're all there.
09:10I think we're all there.
09:10I think we just need to communicate a little bit more.
09:13And once we get the communication down to 100%, everybody's going to be well.
09:17Because we're already at that place where we know what's going on.
09:21You know, we just all got to be on the same page.
09:23Is communicating in practice a big difference between that and the game?
09:27Yeah, yeah, because you got to be 100% correct in practice so that can be able to translate over to the game.
