00:00I'll stick on the front nine here a little bit just to kind of build you up to the crescendo with just how the day started, too, in the group.
00:08J.J. Spahn chipped in at the first hole.
00:09A lot of people probably didn't even see that to begin the day, but that was just such a tone setter from my perspective that J.J. didn't hit the best iron shot to the first hole, but still to get up there, chipping in, playing with Scottie.
00:22It's a big pairing. J.J.'s been in a ton of big situations before, but Sunday playing with Scottie, he's like, you're going to be feeling your nerves in the first hole.
00:30And he had a chip shot that I felt like was one that was totally puttable.
00:34And I talked to his coach, Josh Gregory, right off off the green.
00:37I was like, well, that was a great start. He's a short game coach.
00:39He's like, you know what? That is something that he would have putt last year.
00:43But now he's got more and more confidence around the greens to where he's actually thinking about hole in these shots now.
00:49So I found that interesting. Could I that that's interesting to me on a number of levels.
00:54We've had a lot of players come on the show and talk about the specifics of what they're working on.
00:58And I'm sure you shared some of those details with Josh.
01:00Is there something specifically that he's done different when he's chipping, pitching the ball that's made this huge impact for him?
01:07Well, the technique wise, just to golf nerd it out with you.
01:11Yeah, let's go.
01:11He he's too cutty like he had been too cutty to where he wasn't very great at releasing the club head and he feels everything chipping with his left hand.
01:23And the best comparison that he gave was like, this is kind of how Patrick Reed feels the club head.
01:29A lot of people feel with their right hand to to use the bounce and throw the club head.
01:35And J.J.'s big problem with his pitching was that he would get super long, like a very long backswing and then cut across it.
01:42And so you can get away with that steep or just kind of cross it.
01:46So, like, OK, just not keeping the ball in the face long enough.
01:49So it's just kind of, you know, riding up the face like the only time he he really struggled out of the rough in his chipping for the most part.
01:57If the ball was suspended in the rough, like halfway up or sitting well up, he didn't have a go to shot there.
02:04It was just a chop down guess.
02:05So really, he was lacking a lot of different shots around the greens.
02:10So I think this is helping him being able to kind of diversify his portfolio, if you will.
02:16Well, is that and I because I this is like the the big one of the big debates in the game of golf.
02:21You have like the Joe Mayo school of like steep and spin lop and that does feel a little more cutty.
02:26But then there's the school of thought that's like deliberate more inside.
02:29Is that is he kind of delivering it on more of a shallow plane and more inside instead of trying to cut across it?
02:35I wouldn't say plane is probably the best way to to to maybe go about what exactly he's working on.
02:41I think he's feeling more more things like from impact through he's trying to feel more rotation through the shot to feel like the club head and the ball are on each other for a very long time.
