00:00We got another spot, another opportunity for your point.
00:02Keetra Clark out of Louisville on special teams.
00:04He was going in with the ones and the twos on kickoff during practice.
00:08So you think about it.
00:09How do you make a team?
00:10Let's say you're in the second or third corner.
00:12Make a play on teams.
00:13Go make a tackle.
00:14Go make a big hit.
00:15Force a fumble.
00:16Recover a fumble.
00:17Make yourself more valuable to the coaching staff.
00:21That's the key with those guys in the back end of the roster.
00:23Got to be able to play special teams.
00:25Cardinals bring an extra pass rusher, and it's a screen, and the Cardinals are all over it.
00:32That's Denzel Burke.
00:33Read that, made the tackle on Brashard Smith for a loss of the play of a handful.
00:38That's one thing I do love watching about this Cardinals defense, how smart and intelligent the back end is.
00:43You see corners.
00:44You see nickels.
00:45You see safeties reading things before they come.
00:48That was a screenplay.
00:49Denzel Burke played it perfectly, avoided the block, and he makes the tackle.
00:53You don't see corners missing tackles.
00:55They're physical.
00:56They're not afraid.
00:58Well, one of the things that Monty Awesome Ford emphasized when he got the general manager job is when you're evaluating players,
01:08looking at who the players, as this passes, high in the end zone and picked off.
01:14Hold that thought.
01:16It's intercepted by Keaton Crawford.
01:20We were talking about Crawford having a chance to make the team because of how good he is on special teams.
01:27Well, that pick will certainly help his cause.
01:30Russian coverage working together.
01:32The coaching staff has been elated with Keaton Crawford's play.
01:35Started off in Texas.
01:37Then he transferred.
01:38But they've been saying, man, keep an eye out for 36.
01:40Keaton Crawford, unbelievable pass rush on the inside.
01:44And that leads to an overthrown ball.
01:47And Keaton Crawford high pointing the football, just like a receiver, and getting the interception.
01:53That's a great pick.
01:54Wow.
01:54Some Burroughs has given away a free bean and cheese burrow at any of their Valley locations tomorrow only,
02:01with a purchase for 20 on strength.
02:03Some Burroughs family owned since 1986.
02:06A great job by Keaton Crawford high pointing the football.
02:09But look at this pass rush on the inside, forcing an errant throw.
02:13People talk about football as an individual sport.
02:17It's not.
02:17The front end has helped the back end.
02:19The back end helps the front end.
02:20Offense helps.
02:21Defense helps.
02:21Special teams.
02:22It's the ultimate team game.
02:24That was Patrick Jenkins out of Tulane that had the pressure.
02:27And Crawford, you mentioned it, was at Texas before transferring to Nevada last year.
02:32Gets the interception.
02:34Despite his arm getting yanked by the receiver, trying to pull that ball in.
02:40Another series for Clayton Toome.
02:41And Michael Carter gets the carry.
02:46You talked about how it's a defensive line trying to help make plays.
02:50Check out the pass rush on the inside.
02:52You're going to see Bailey Zappi have a little bit of time,
02:55but eventually that pass rush is going to win.
02:56Good hand, side swipe, and then all of a sudden you're working, you're working.
03:00You get a little bit of a quarterback hit, a quarterback hurry, a quarterback effect,
03:03and that's not going to show up on the stat sheet,
03:06but it is going to show up when the team watches the tape and says,
03:09this is how we help our team win.
03:10And Patrick Jenkins, not the biggest guy, about 290 pounds,
03:14trying to play nose tackle or perhaps one of the two deep tackle spots in that three-man front.
03:20But when he was in Tulane, and he's a big reason why Tulane had a lot of success the last couple years,
03:25made a lot of plays.
03:25Yes, Pat Jenkins, you were number zero at Tulane, and he was the heartbeat of that football team.
03:29He was known for his size, and not necessarily his pass rush per se,
03:33but he does have a level of quickness to him.
03:35There you see Coach Aladabador talking to his defensive linemen,
03:38making sure they understand they have to stay ready to help affect the quarterback even more.
03:42Third down and one for the offense.
03:50Carter, and he gets the first down.
03:52Speaking of a guy that just makes plays, Carter, who was playing by the Cardinals off waivers from the Jets two years ago.
04:01Well, he's a hard guy to keep off the field because if there's an injury and there's been injuries at that position
04:06and Michael Carter goes in the game, he makes something happen.
04:09Inside two minutes to go in the third.
04:30Turned back to throw.
04:33Pass is caught to the 45-yard line.
04:36Josiah DeGuarra flagged down.
04:41Two flags down in the backfield.
04:44It's like a late hit or a low hit.
04:46On two.
04:49Personal foul.
04:50Ruffing the passer.
04:51Defense number 91.
04:53A 15-yard penalty will be at the end of the play.
04:56First down.
04:57Hunter D.K. Uzama.
04:58First round pick a couple years ago.
05:00The Chiefs penalized that time.
05:03A great job by Clayton Toone being patient in the pocket.
05:08You saw him hurt a little bit earlier, but he finds DeGuarra, who was a third-round pick by the Packers back in 2020,
05:14got injured his rookie year, tore his ACL, was out for the season.
05:17This offensive structure was a lot of 12 and 13 personnel, two and three tight ends.
05:22So there could be an opportunity for DeGuarra to earn a spot on this team.
05:31Carter up the middle.
05:32And no running room that time.
05:34Belted after a one-yard gain by Cooper McDonald.
05:38We saw that time, DeGuarra lining up at fullback, obviously a tight end.
05:49We know that Wolf, even though he's not here, he's watching.
05:52He's been texting us, rock the broadcast, knowing that he's missing this, but happy at home with his family.
05:58But has to appreciate seeing a little fullback action here late in the third.
06:09Tune on second and nine.
06:11Fresh up the middle.
06:12It's picked up.
06:13And Bokelec on the catch.
06:15And Travis Bokelec, another hard guy, if you're the Cardinals to cut.
06:19Because when he's played, especially as a blocker, he's been really good for the Cardinals.
06:25Yeah, he is.
06:25He's 6'6", 260.
06:27So he's big, he's strong, he's got size.
06:30But also he can catch the ball.
06:31So you don't want to be one-dimensional even as a tight end who's technically a quote, blocking tight end.
06:36No, so you can run routes as well because defense won't be expecting it.
06:39Now that's something about Tim Ryman.
06:40I'm not sure, I don't know if people realize.
06:42As big as he is, as good as he is as a blocker, Ryman is a pretty good pass catcher.
06:48That's why the Cardinals feel their tight end room is as good as any in the league.
06:52No running room for Carter that time.
06:54Josh Williams greets him in the backfield on that down for a loss of a couple.
07:00And that's the end of the third quarter.
07:02It'll be fourth down for the Cardinals when we come back.
07:06A tie game, 17 apiece.
07:08Travis Bokelec trying to make the roster.
07:11Or the Cardinals gets it in position.
07:14But they went backwards on third down.
07:15It'll be fourth if we come back.
07:17Kicked at Maryland.
07:23That's where he wrapped up his college career.
07:25And then was a fourth-round draft pick by the Patriots two years ago.
07:28But his struggle this rookie year was let go.
07:31Signed with the Cardinals last year when Matt Prater got hurt.
07:34And it was nothing short of spectacular.
07:36Three game-winning kicks in his first four games.
07:4028 of 32 on the year.
07:42A 50-yard attempt here.
07:44And Ryland nails that one.
07:47He's two for two tonight.
07:48And the Cardinals have the lead again.
07:49Cygna Healthcare is proud to sponsor the Kicks for Kids program for the 15th year.
08:00For each successful Cardinals field goal, Cygna Healthcare donates to Cardinals charities benefiting Community Bridges, Inc.
08:06To help adolescents overcome behavioral health issues and addiction by supporting him to find a path to recovery, good health, and a better life.
08:13But the Cardinals kick off the regular season in New Orleans September 7th.
08:20Their home opener against the Panthers.
08:22They have a Thursday night game against rival Seattle late September.
08:27Their bye weeks basically right smack dab in the middle of the year.
08:31They'll have an extra day after the bye week because that November 3rd game is on Monday night in Dallas.
08:37And play the Seahawks on the short week for the second time.
08:42Wrap up the season with back-to-back road games.
08:45Both those Bengals and Rams games could be either Saturday or Sunday at the end of the regular season.
08:50Yeah, the back half of the season looks a little bit more difficult than the front end of the season.
08:54I look at the game versus the Rams, who they're obviously a division opponent right there.
08:59Look at the teams like the Bengals.
09:01You might want to get up to a fast start.
09:03Of course, you want to finish strong, but get to a fast start, get that bye week, get rested, and then finish strong.
09:13On the line drive kickoff, it reached the target zone.
09:16More on the return out past the 30.
09:18You mentioned the teams that the Cardinals will have on their schedule.
09:23And obviously, the division goes twice.
09:24You touch on the Rams.
09:25As you look at the NFC West, what stands out to you about each team?
09:30And obviously, the 49ers, coming off a bad year, they had a ton of injuries.
09:34They moved on from some key guys that were part of their Super Bowl team.
09:38The F. Seattle with a new quarterback there, and the Rams with the veteran Matthew Stafford.
09:44Yeah, I see opportunity.
09:45Of course, the Rams have won the division in the majority of the last several years.
09:49Matthew Stafford is dealing with a little bit of an injury, so there's opportunity there.
09:52Yes, they added Devontae Adams, but opportunity there.
09:55There's a deep ball, and it is incomplete.
10:00You had Elijah Jones in coverage.
10:02Go to Seattle.
10:03Sam Darnold, he was outstanding in Minnesota.
10:05Will he be the same without Kevin O'Connell?
10:07Go to head coach, i.e. quarterback Whistler.
10:10So there's opportunity there.
10:12And at San Francisco, you might argue they're somewhat rebuilding.
10:15They let go of so much talent in order to pay Brock Purdy.
10:19So I think with Arizona ascending in the 30-year-old under Jonathan Gannon, this is the prime opportunity for them to win the division.
10:28Second and 10 for the Chiefs.
10:33We're going to keep it on the ground here.
10:35Smith able to get outside.
10:38And there's flags down.
10:39Looked like there was a hole.
10:44Elijah Jones on the tackle.
10:45Santan Ford scoring drive presented by Santan Ford and Gilbert.
10:50Santan Ford of the Cardinals.
10:52We are Santan Ford.
10:54There are two battles by the offense.
10:56Holding.
10:58Offense number 71.
10:59Affinity decline.
11:01Holding.
11:02Offense number 62.
11:04Then your penalty.
11:05Second down.
11:06Seattle is going to be really interesting.
11:08Obviously, Pete Carroll is now in Vegas.
11:11But, you know, Gino Smith in Vegas as well.
11:13So now Sam Darnold, who was so good.
11:16You mentioned that.
11:17No Kevin O'Connell now.
11:18A lot of eyes are going to be on him.
11:20The health of Matt Stafford.
11:21And now that Brock Purdy's got the contract.
11:23Can he back it up?
11:24Well, it's not even the fact that can he back it up.
11:26It's that so many guys are gone.
11:28Look at it.
11:28Debo Samuel is now with the commanders.
11:31A lot of their defense is gone.
11:33Telling on a telling on a Funga is on a different team with the Broncos.
11:36So, there's a lot of missing pieces for the 49ers.
11:45Ola Doking, the quarterback, dumps it off to Jared Wiley.
11:51And a gain of maybe one.
11:53I will say this in Seattle.
11:54Sam Darnold is the starter.
11:56But don't sleep on Jalen Millbrook.
11:59He got drafted there.
12:00Third round.
12:01He's an elite-level athlete.
12:04If he gets an opportunity, he may turn some heads for the Seattle Seahawks.
12:09Quarterback out of Alabama.
12:10Was outstanding during his time there.
12:12He's different.
12:14Third and 18 now for the Chiefs.
12:19Cardinals backing everybody away.
12:2210, 15 yards off the football.
12:24Got to keep in front of the sticks and a wide receiver screen for Kansas City.
12:29Out past the 30-yard line and near the 40.
12:32Close to the first down at the 42-yard line is Elijah Badger, a rookie out of Florida.
12:38And he got the first down.
12:39So, inexcusable defense there to give up the third down at 18.
12:44It is.
12:45So, right here, Elliot Brown has to get out of there.
12:47Get out of your stack.
12:48As soon as you see that offensive lineman let you go by, every defender has to run out of their stack.
12:52Meaning, go run into the football.
12:53They did that.
12:54But Elliot Brown, as the edge player, that offensive lineman is throwing you by.
12:59He's not going to let you sack the quarterback for free.
13:01Put your foot in the ground.
13:02Turn lateral.
13:03You're the only one that can make that play.
13:06So, fresh set it out for Kansas City on its 42.
13:09And nothing doing there.
13:15We touched down the other teams.
13:17The Cardinals will play in the division.
13:19The Chiefs will not be on the regular season schedule.
13:22What do you make of Kansas City?
13:24You expect them to be again in the mix to win a sixth, fourth Super Bowl and get there for the sixth time in the last seven years.
13:31The biggest issue for Kansas City last year was protecting the quarterback.
13:35I believe it was seven sacks in the Super Bowl.
13:37What do they do?
13:39They re-signed Trey Smith.
13:40Made him the highest paid guard.
13:42Not just a franchise tag, a long-term deal.
13:44They went and drafted offensive linemen.
13:46They got guys in free agency.
13:48Jalen Moore from San Francisco.
13:49So, they address their weaknesses.
13:51On the token on the move.
13:54Keeps his eyes downfield.
13:56Launches it.
13:57And incomplete.
13:59What a catch to hope by Smith.
14:00He didn't get the feet down.
14:04Incomplete bats.
14:06Kansas City as well.
14:07They are getting healthier wide receiver.
14:09Their Hollywood round was entered last year.
14:11So, there's help there as well.
14:14Take another look here to see clearly out of bounds.
14:17Well, third down and ten.
14:18Can the defense get off the field?
14:20They gave up a third down and 18 moments ago.
14:24This is a time as a pass rusher where you just pin your ears back.
14:28Third and obvious, meaning it's obviously a pass.
14:31Bring out your best pass rush move.
14:32Have a plan.
14:33Have a pass rush plan.
14:35Work half a man.
14:36Put some good stuff on tape and help your team win.
14:39Cardinals struggled on third down last year.
14:41Play clock was at one.
14:42So, Andy Reid calls a timeout.
14:43Arizona was 28th.
14:46Third down defense a year ago.
14:48Kansas City.
14:49The first of the half.
14:51A lot of mental reps.
14:53Smith saying he is both surprised and excited to see what Elijah Jones has already applied from year one to year two.
15:00Dave.
15:00And, Danny, we've already talked about how important that second year is, whether you've played 17 games or played none in year one.
15:09It's such a quick turnaround for rookies as Oladokun launches it downfield into traffic.
15:17Incomplete.
15:17Trying for Keyshawn Smith.
15:25Cardinals had a couple of defenders.
15:26And, Sam, I don't know if you remember what it was like your rookie year, but you think of all that you're dealing with, the workouts, the combine, pro day, you get drafted, all of a sudden you're in minicamp.
15:38And then training camp comes.
15:40And then instead of 12-game season, it's 17-plus.
15:43That's why people talk about that rookie wall.
15:45Because you've been going nonstop since the end of your junior year or maybe the last year you play in college, you're grinding, you're working.
15:51The season ends.
15:52You go and you train.
15:53And then the combine and the senior ball and pro day.
15:56And you get drafted.
15:57There's rookie minicamp.
15:57I mean, there's so much.
15:59And then there's preseason and the season and the postseason.
16:02It's like you finally get a chance to breathe after your rookie season.
16:06And so that's why the second year is so much better to see players have a jump because they know what works, they know what doesn't, they know how to get better.
16:14Just the snapshot that we had of Marvin Harrison Jr. and the limited action tonight.
16:18The one catch he had over the middle, extending the arms.
16:22And it wasn't last year because he was worried about getting hit.
16:25It was just adjusting to the football sometimes.
16:28It took time for him.
16:30And we saw him make a great catch in the first quarter.
16:34But yeah, and even to your, we're talking to Danny's point about Elijah Jones, just the mental side of the game.
16:40Getting mental reps are invaluable.
16:43So he, he's going to be better this year even though he didn't get a chance to play.
16:47Nice cut by Zonovan Knight, second year out of NC State.
16:52Avoided getting hit in the backfield, picked up five yards.
16:54Go places, take a look at our out-of-town score sponsored by your Valley Toyota dealers.
16:59Jets up 27-10.
17:03Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers.
17:04How do you think that'll go this year?
17:06I have my doubts.
17:07Just based off of the last several years with Aaron Rodgers.
17:11The best part about his game is his mobility.
17:13One of the best parts about his game is his mobility.
17:15But you're starting to see the sack start to rack up.
17:18He's not as mobile.
17:18So that's where my doubts lie.
17:22Toon checks it down.
17:25And a first down for Knight.
17:27Out to the 20.
17:29And when I say mobility with Aaron Rodgers, he's not Kyler Murray.
17:32He's not running around like Lamar Jackson.
17:34But he steps up in the B-gap, steps up in the pocket, gets the ball downfield.
17:38You see him step up and instead of being able to evade, that's when some of those sacks happen.
17:41And so, you talk about A for different players.
17:44Players camp will be in 38, still playing at a high level.
17:46But sometimes you have to change the way you play if you want to still play against some of these young guys.
17:52Played toon.
17:53Bouncing back nicely from that interception.
17:55Hands it off to Knight.
17:56A little slip of time going to pick up another five.
18:03Talking about some of those roster spots.
18:06Running back is another position.
18:08Zonovan Knight's the guy that's trying to make this team.
18:11But that's when I go back to him or Michael Carter or D.J. Dallas.
18:16It has to be special teams.
18:18D.J. Dallas is a weapon on special teams as a kick returner.
18:21Michael Carter's trying to find an opportunity to make this team.
18:24So is Zonovan Knight.
18:25So big runs right now can open eyes for this team or others.
18:29And given the change in the dynamic kickoff rule with, on a touchback, the ball coming out to the 35.
18:36Coaches are anticipating as Knight gets another first down that we're going to have more returns.
18:41Meaning more kicks are going to be to the goal line, forcing you to return it.
18:45Whereas last year with the first time new rule, not expecting a lot of kickoffs.
18:49That impacted coaches and GMs in terms of the back end of the roster.
18:53What do we want as our kick returner?
18:55Now that you're going to have more returns, that may help somebody like D.J. Dallas,
18:59who we saw last year have a kick return for a touchdown.
19:02Correct.
19:02And that's when special teams coaches or coordinators or even head coaches say,
19:07how can we gain an extra 5 or 10 yards?
19:10And maybe it's in the return game like we saw.
19:12On the bootleg, Toone.
19:15And through the hands of the intended target, incomplete, Tristan Jackson.
19:19That was a pretty good throw by Toone.
19:21You mentioned his athletic ability.
19:24He was able to get on the move to his left and throw a strike, but Jackson couldn't come off of the catch.
19:30Look at our Fight for 53, sponsored by Desert Financial Credit Union.
19:34Assuming, obviously, the top two, Connor and Benson, assuming Di Mercado is on the roster.
19:40Then you've got D.J. Dallas, Michael Carter, Zana tonight, probably for one spot.
19:45Potentially two, but more than likely one.
19:46More than likely one, and that one has to be what we call a four-four special teamer, meaning kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return.
19:53You must contribute, not just be a guy.
19:56Knight with rims past midfield.
19:58And inside the Kansas City 40-yard line.
20:01A gain of 27 for Zana the Knight.
20:04One thing that does show up on tape for Zana the Knight is explosiveness and big playability.
20:10You see it in other places that he's been, and that's what you want to try to show.
20:13I'm talking a lot about 17s, but there might be teams who say, hey, we need another running back that can bust out a big play.
20:20That's one thing that Zana the Knight has in his arsenal.
20:24Cardinals up three.
20:27Looking to add to their lead during the midway point of the fourth quarter.
20:31Preseason game number one.
20:33Cardinals will be in Denver next Saturday and then home to Las Vegas.
20:37Cut down to 53 is on August 26th.
20:41Toon dumps it off to Knight.
20:44Penalty marker down.
20:46And Knight gets hit late after the whistle blew.
20:50But no flag is thrown despite Brandon George coming in there once the play was over.
21:01The Cardinals were the second least penalized team in the NFL last year.
21:13Very disciplined.
21:14Turnovers were an issue.
21:15They finished minus three.
21:17We've seen turnovers and penalties tonight.
21:19It's preseason.
21:20That's going to happen.
21:20But one of the staples of Jonathan Gannon's tenure so far has been few penalties.
21:27That's what winning football is.
21:28It's penalties and who wins a turnover margin.
21:31That one piece of it, they've got to get that second piece going.
21:33Even if it's the preseason, you don't want to put it on tape.
21:35D.J. Dallas belted after a short game.
21:45It's interesting, Dave.
21:46We talk a lot about D.J. Dallas as a specialist, as a kick returner.
21:51But if he can show a little bit of juice as a running back,
21:54that could earn him more of an opportunity, not just on fourth down,
21:58but on first, second, and third.
22:00Dallas former Seahawk.
22:02D.J. Dallas, entering his sixth year, spent his first four years in Seattle
22:07before joining the Cardinals last year.
22:09He had nine rushing attempts, had a receiving touchdown,
22:14and the aforementioned kick returned for score.
22:18Bocelli, the intended receiver, couldn't get down there fast enough,
22:21trying to hit him in stride with Azizi Hearn in coverage.
22:27Andre Bocelli, another bubble player, has been here for a while.
22:32He has been here for a while, whether on the active roster or practice squad.
22:37Hoping to get on the team, is that number five or number six receiver.
22:47So third down and 18 for the Cardinals.
22:49And brought down at the 45, made the first man miss, but couldn't get away from Basa.
23:05Fourth down.
23:06And every player is different, but you start to see some of the different body types or different skill sets.
23:12DeMarcado on third down, more of a shifty back.
23:15D.J. Dallas, more physical, downhill, wants to hit you.
23:18Not going to make many people miss in a phone booth.
23:21So those are some of the differences when you watch people as they play.
23:24Rashard Smith will drop back to return the punt.
23:26Blake Gilligan, good year last year, punting the football.
23:31Got to pin the Chiefs deep here with six and a half to go.
23:38Perfect punt by Gilligan.
23:40Enough hang time to force the fair catch inside the five.
23:43Cardinals up day, the 43-yard touchdown by Imari DeMarcado in the first half.
23:51He's so great in space.
23:53Third down back, but he did not have to just be on third down.
23:56The patience, the poise, the vision, letting the box develop, setting up the safety,
24:01using a little bit of a stiff arm and then using his speed and space to do the rest.
24:06The Riccardo, important player on this Cardinals team.
24:14You mentioned third down back play last year, also on special teams.
24:20Former a drafted player out of TCU.
24:23The Chiefs backed up inside their five after that great punt by Gilligan.
24:28Oladokun, over the middle, it's caught out at the 11-yard line.
24:32Oladokun has been beaten.
24:34Elijah Jones in coverage that time on Al Presley, who made the grab.
24:39Valuable rep for Elijah Jones.
24:41You want to be a little bit tighter.
24:43You may not know what's happening, but sometimes you're watching film,
24:45you're saying, okay, it's first and ten.
24:46I'm looking at the splits.
24:48I usually see slant.
24:49Do I trust it?
24:50Do I not?
24:51That's why you want to be a little bit tighter on to try and get a pass breakup,
24:54a PBU, instead of a completion.
24:55One play on second and two.
25:05And Elijah Young going to be close to the first down.
25:08You mentioned the Cardinals will be in Denver next week.
25:12They will fly to Denver on Wednesday and have a joint practice.
25:15Now, last year, the Cardinals had two joint practices with Tennessee,
25:19one this year with Denver.
25:20How valuable, Sam, are those?
25:22They're invaluable.
25:24And specifically with the Denver Broncos,
25:26if you talk to John Gannon, they'll tell you he loves Sean Payton's style of play.
25:30He's an old-school coach.
25:31And so, John Gannon is extremely excited about an opportunity to practice against guys like those on the Broncos
25:38because he knows it's going to be good on good,
25:40and they're going to be extremely physical.
25:42Those obviously don't replace the value of preseason games,
25:46but it's another tool that GMs and personnel and coaches use in evaluating players
25:53when we try to find the 53.
25:55Correct.
25:56You get an opportunity for free, unscouted looks versus another team.
26:01Not just in the preseason, but you're seeing what guys do in one-on-one situations,
26:04seeing what guys do in team periods.
26:06Players that might be hitting on the roster,
26:08you're going to get a chance to see them up close and personal.
26:10So, joint practices, players don't necessarily love them because it feels like a game at times,
26:14but scouts and GMs, they are very grateful for joint practices.
26:19So, they'll have the joint practice on Thursday
26:21and then walk through Friday game Saturday night right here in our AZ family.
26:28Good defense by the Cardinals that time, and that screen to Badger,
26:31that caught the Cardinals on the last possession, but Arizona much better there.
26:35And it just came to my mind, actually, one of my last years in Chicago,
26:38I did a joint practice with the Broncos.
26:40I know it wasn't Sean Payton, but even getting a chance for me as a player
26:43to see Vaughn Miller as he rushed the quarterback.
26:46Now, I'm learning tips and tricks from Vaughn.
26:49So, not only coaches and scouts, but players are going to be able to watch and say,
26:52okay, what does Bo Nix do?
26:54Maybe I can add that to some of my game.
26:55What does Portland Sutton do as a receiver?
26:57Oh, maybe I can make a jump like he did.
26:59So, there's a huge value in jointly practicing.
27:02Empty set for Oladokun on second and 11, quick pass, and it's caught by Smith.
27:10And a good tackle that time out in space by Cody Simon to get a linebacker on a receiver.
27:17Simon, who was the fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, five years at Ohio State.
27:22For Simon, helped them do a national championship last year.
27:25He's a leader.
27:25He was a big reason why they won an athlete championship.
27:28He could have come out to the NFL last season, but he didn't.
27:31He and a bunch of their players stayed in order to win a national championship.
27:35Now, he's one of eight Buckeyes who were on that starting defense who were no longer there.
27:39They're now in the NFL, 15 total starters.
27:42So, the Ohio State team is going to have to replace a lot.
27:44That's a position for the Cardinals where there is a spot available for time.
27:50With Kaiser White no longer here.
27:52You got Mack Wilson as the known starter for sure is Oladokun, spinning around multiple times in the backfield and not throwing.
28:00And it's caught by Presley for the first down.
28:09Broken plays are very frustrating for defenses.
28:14You got him.
28:15You got him there.
28:15You got him there.
28:16And all of a sudden, he's gone.
28:17He disappears.
28:18And he makes a great play on the run.
28:20You don't plan for this.
28:23You don't game plan for a play like that.
28:25You have to try to be more sticky in your coverage.
28:27Boy, the quarterback has eight, nine, ten seconds running around back there.
28:31Most likely, it's going to be a completion.
28:33And he got an injured Cardinal trying to see the number at the 35.
28:38It's Elijah Jones.
28:40Danny already touched on the injury issue last year.
28:43Hopefully, nothing serious for Jones.
28:47And I think it's good for the game.
28:49I agree.
28:49It's a little bit expanded, so now they're assisting on more plays, but it's not taking as long.
28:54So, I definitely agree on that.
28:56So, fourth down and three.
29:00And Oladokun taking off gets the first down and more.
29:04Oladokun all the way to midfield.
29:07He gets 27 yards on fourth down and three on the scramble.
29:10There is a penalty marker down.
29:14So, when you have a mobile quarterback, you know that he's not looking to pass.
29:18He's looking to run.
29:18He's looking at the pass rush, then using his speed to do the rest.
29:22Oladokun is very mobile.
29:24So, when pressure gets in his face, you have to collapse the pocket.
29:27Four rushers have to rush as one altogether.
29:30Looks like it's coming back anyway.
29:31After the play, personal foul, offense number 80.
29:36A 15-year-old penalty.
29:38It will be first and chance.
29:39So, it's a post-whistle foul, so that means they get the first down.
29:45But, Elijah Badger, because of the personal foul, pushes Kansas City back 15 yards.
29:55I like the replay assist.
29:56I think it's good.
29:57You're going to have times where it's hard.
30:01Live, obviously, we know these officials have a very difficult job.
30:04There might be something that is easily seen by video replay that the official missed
30:10just because it's in a crowd or sometimes an official gets hit or his vision is impaired
30:16because there are players around him as another flag comes in after the tackle out-of-bounds.
30:34My old partner used to call the fourth quarter of preseason games the witching hour for this
30:38very reason when we start to see flags everywhere, on every play.
30:52And we're just waiting now for an announcement.
31:01Personal foul, face foul, offense, number 84.
31:05A 15-year-old penalty.
31:07We played for Sarah.
31:07And Matt Delano, he was the guy that caught the ball.
31:10He's saying to Andy Reid, I just stiff-armed him, but he must have
31:13grabbed the mask and turned it.
31:16You don't see that call the lot on an offensive player.
31:24The right side of your screen.
31:27That looks clean to me.
31:29Open hand.
31:31He's not grasping the face mask.
31:33That looks like a clean stiff arm with you.
31:35Yeah.
31:37Surprised that
31:38that was called.
31:46It'll be first and 20 for the Chiefs.
31:49The Cardinals starters played a couple series.
31:51They turned it over on the opening kickoff and then had another turnover in the red zone
31:55on an interception by Kyler Murray.
31:57His only incompletion goal of the night.
32:00Older Oguns pass off target.
32:01Trying to hit Presley.
32:03Older Oguns pass and complete.
32:06There is a challenge, I will say, in situations like this.
32:09You call it the witching hour, but think about the players on the field.
32:12They're trying to go and make a play.
32:13I'm trying to go get a sack.
32:14I'm trying to go get a pick.
32:15Interception.
32:16Well, if you're just doing your own thing, being an individual,
32:19it can cause a big play like that big run we saw earlier.
32:22We're not game planning.
32:23I understand that.
32:24But you still have to work together with the guys in front of you
32:27to try and get off of the field, not just make an individual play.
32:30Right.
32:30If you're a coach and you're concerned about a player doing his own thing
32:34and not following a game plan,
32:35and you're not going to do it in preseason games,
32:38hard to justify getting a roster spot if you can't be trusted.
32:43Being chased over Durkan, and he throws it away.
32:49By Jones.
32:51That pressure that time.
32:54Well, third down and 20 with 2.34 to go here on the board.
32:58We saw a couple quarters ago, a third down, a screen play.
33:03Cardinals gave up a big play, and even the Chiefs did it once as well.
33:06Be alert, third and 20.
33:09It's hard to really get a full 20,
33:10so we can expect screens and draws generally.
33:13This situation may be a little bit different.
33:15If Kansas City is trying to go and win the game,
33:17then you would expect a different play.
33:21But in preseason, sometimes you just want to get different looks.
33:24On the token, and it is caught, but well short of the line again.
33:34Now they're saying incomplete.
33:38And so fourth down, plenty of time for the Chiefs to pump the ball
33:43and have a chance at another possession
33:45versus going forward on fourth and 20,
33:48but it is a preseason game, so the offense will stay out there.
33:51These are valuable looks.
33:53Rarely do you get a fourth and 20 in a real situation
33:56where you're going to try and do something with it.
33:58So the offense says, okay.
34:00Matt Nagy, offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, says,
34:02here's some plays I had in my mind.
34:03Let me give it a shot and see what happens.
34:05Great opportunity for Nick Rallis as well.
34:07Defensive coordinator, if you pretend it's a real situation,
34:10what do you do?
34:11How do you line up on fourth and nearly impossible?
34:14And now a flag comes in.
34:22Play clock at zero.
34:23Part of the inspiration of the play clock.
34:25Timeout.
34:27Kansas City.
34:27The second and a half.
34:29Be 30 seconds in length.
34:31So one timeout left for the Chiefs.
34:35They also get the two-minute warning,
34:36and now Andy Reid going to change his mind and punt it.
34:38When you have Matt Ariza, who had a punt of almost 70 yards earlier,
34:43might as well boot it deep.
34:45You got enough time,
34:48although obviously one first down for the Cardinals wins the game.
34:52If I'm the returner,
34:53I might be taking a couple steps further back.
34:56Of course, Jeff Rockers, he understands the game plan.
34:59He'll tell you exactly where the ball usually lands.
35:02But Ariza booted that last one.
35:04So finally, Xavier Weaver.
35:06Weaver, I'm at the 20 right now.
35:08Let me get back to the 15 a little bit, just in case.
35:11And this is a good rep for Weaver,
35:12for what we talked about earlier,
35:13trying to make the team as a receiver,
35:16but show that he can return punts if need be.
35:19Contact to Ariza.
35:20No flag, though.
35:21Incidental contact.
35:23Weaver backs up to the 10.
35:25Pass the 20.
35:28And that's a nice return.
35:29About 18 yards out to the 28-yard line.
35:32There's no foul for repping the kicker.
35:34The contact is by a teenager.
35:35The Cardinals with a chance to ice the game.
35:44Leading 20 to 17.
35:46Clayton Toone has played most of the second half.
35:49Back out there, quarterback.
35:51The Cardinals tonight have rushed for 136 yards.
35:59About four and a half yards of carry.
36:01They were seventh in the league in rushing last year.
36:04If you look at what they've done the last two years,
36:06they're number three in the NFL in rushing offense.
36:09The Cardinals.
36:14Time of the night.
36:15Still out there at running back.
36:21Night trying to find a hole.
36:22It's not there.
36:23Push back after maybe a gain of one.
36:26Andy Reeves trying to call that last time out
36:32before the two-minute warning.
36:34And he did.
36:35I like it.
36:36I like it a lot because you're working on situations.
36:38You understand two-minute offense.
36:40And you give your guys a chance to really work on a real situation,
36:51even if you're a three.
36:53So if you're just tuning in and didn't see Kyla Murray's two series,
36:57only one in completion.
36:58Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was a pick in the red zone,
37:01but had some good throws, too.
37:03He did.
37:03And the interception cost the Cardinals seven points,
37:05a red zone pick.
37:06But there was some great opportunities.
37:07Staying in the pocket, not being afraid,
37:09finding Marvin Harrison Jr., finding Trey McBride,
37:13and then using his legs.
37:14That's one thing I love about Kyla Murray.
37:16He doesn't have to escape all the time.
37:18He can escape within the pocket and still have his eyes downfield.
37:24Seven of eight, 96 yards in the interception for Murray.
37:30Playing his first preseason action in two years.
37:32We'll see how much, if at all,
37:35the ones play in Denver next weekend.
37:42He's out of the night.
37:44Bottled up.
37:45Another flag.
37:50It's going to be offside on Kansas City.
37:52He's going to be offside on Kansas City.
38:06Sam, how much do the players that are bubble guys, how much do they feel it?
38:11How confident, like if you have a big preseason game, are you thinking about that?
38:15Are you feeling like you've elevated your status?
38:18How concerned after your first preseason game should these guys be?
38:22Oh, you feel it for sure.
38:23No matter what happens, good or bad.
38:26If you have a big interception, you're like, okay, man, okay, maybe I'll climb up the depth chart.
38:29If you fumble the ball, you're thinking, man, will I be cut?
38:32You feel every single play and every single rep.
38:35That's why these games are so valuable to the players who are playing right now in the fourth quarter.
38:40Because you know that this could be made or made for your NFL career.
38:45Bunch of penalties.
38:47Look like offside again.
38:48There might have been more than that.
38:55But now the Cardinals are backing up.
38:58Perhaps because they blew it dead.
39:02A few yards back.
39:07Illegal shift.
39:09Offense number 39 and 45 were not set.
39:13Five-yard penalty.
39:14Second down.
39:14And for a talent evaluator, you've been watching these guys throughout camp.
39:20You finally, you're curious how they will do under the lights.
39:23You finally get a chance to see them.
39:24It will be interesting to see how the players that did well are evaluated.
39:28After Mahomes was out there for just a couple snaps, after the Cardinals turned it over on the opening kickoff,
39:34and Mahomes threw a touchdown pass, and his night was over.
39:39On third and one, quarterback sneak.
39:41And Clayton Tune getting an extra push.
39:45And he's got it.
39:46He's a big dude.
39:49And they would bring him in in short yardage previously at times for the Cardinals.
39:54And Paul Tyler on third and one situation.
39:58And Tune again able to move the chain.
39:59The game within the game.
40:00You saw Andy Reid calling timeouts before the two-minute warning,
40:03trying to get his offensive ball back.
40:06Well, John Gannon says, okay, we'll do a quarterback sneak,
40:09and we'll see how you stop us now when we go to victory formation.
40:14Yep.
40:15A couple more snaps, and this one's over.
40:17Tune will take a knee, and then one more.
40:25Cardinals again in Denver.
40:27They leave Wednesday.
40:28Joint practice with the Broncos this week.
40:31The game is Saturday night.
40:32Then they return home to play the Raiders
40:34in the final preseason game, two weeks from tonight.
40:38And then just the one cut down to 53 players on August 26th.
40:45And then you'll have Monty Austin Ford and company
40:49looking at the waiver wire to see what players are available
40:52and also of their guys who got picked up
40:54and then form their practice squad.
40:57And that may not be the final roster.
41:02Michael Goodwill looking on.
41:03Cardinals will be evaluating everyone and everything
41:08from this game and beyond all the games in the NFL.
41:11They've got scouts looking at the tape,
41:13trying to see how they can improve their roster
41:15even before the next game,
41:17but certainly before the regular season starts
41:19on September 7th in New Orleans
41:23against the new-look Saints with Kellen Moore
41:25as their new head coach
41:27and potentially a new quarterback, Spencer Rattler,
41:30right now starting the first preseason game
41:32for New Orleans, but got Jake Hainer there.
41:37A couple other guys
41:38that the Saints will play in preseason
41:41trying to figure out who's going to start week one.
41:43Cardinals know who their starting quarterback is,
41:45Kyla Murray.
41:46Again.
