00:30Please welcome 49ers Kids Club member, 9-year-old Michael Garcia Jr.
02:00Back the line of scrimmage with that front seven.
02:03As Fern said, a lot of the starters out there for Denver, including Nick Bonito, who's coming off the edge.
02:08That is in the air to Watkins!
02:10And he brought it down!
02:12And he's finally caught by the former 49er, Talanoa Hufunga.
02:16The speed of the rookie on this play.
02:19And he's got it.
02:20I said it in the open.
02:21He is sneaky fast and got by the defender here out to your left.
02:26Great job by Mack Jones with Zeckel getting pressed into his lap.
02:31Still launched that ball right over the top.
02:34And coming out of the slot on the slot fade.
02:36What a really nice catch with the sun in his eyes by Jordan Watkins.
02:40Love that.
02:414-3, 7-40 at the combine this year.
02:44Really dynamic player at Ole Miss.
02:46Second carry for Taylor.
02:47And he keeps churning.
02:49And it'll be about second down and six, second to seven.
02:53Love Patrick Taylor in this offense with what he brings.
02:56And it's a different element.
02:57He's a bigger back in terms of his size.
02:59He's 6'2".
03:00He's close to 220 pounds.
03:02He's had a nice NFL career with the Packers in here.
03:05And he's just going to get you four yards in a cloud of dust.
03:08He has been very decisive here in training camp.
03:11And like a lot of guys on this team, he is going to have to be a core special teams player.
03:16And he is good in that department.
03:17And that's him.
03:18Niners are in the red zone, which is one of the keys when you look back at...
03:22Last season.
03:26Jones.
03:28And there's Taylor out of the backfield.
03:30And it'll bring up third down.
03:33And the offensive line, when you talk about...
03:35I mean, these guys are going to, you know, probably all be backups with the exception of Barch at left guard.
03:41I anticipate he'll probably be in there week one, as I said earlier.
03:44But this Denver unit now, 63 sacks for them last year.
03:49That was a franchise record.
03:50Zach Allen, all these guys inside, Cooper on the outside, Benito, they are going to bring it to you.
03:57Mac Jones hands it off.
03:58And Taylor is going to get very near the line to gain.
04:03And just shy, the officials indicating it's fourth down here in the Toyota red zone.
04:07And the Niners look like they're going to go for it.
04:15Well, Carl Cheffers, our white hat, three-time Super Bowl referee, we're going to get our first look at the Sony Hawkeye virtual measurement technology.
04:25We're going to stop for a measurement.
04:27So he backs away.
04:28The six 8K cameras here in the building are measuring the ball based on where the officials put it down.
04:38The chain gang no longer measures for first downs, though they are here to indicate on the sidelines for everybody.
04:44Looks like two to three inches short.
04:47That's your guess.
04:48That's my guess.
04:48You know, we get specific measurements now.
04:52Oh, we're going to get it down to the inch.
04:54I think we might.
04:54Down to the inch.
04:55If all goes right.
04:56No index card needed.
04:59That's the hope.
05:00This is a process that they say will be about half as long as it took with the chains in terms of timing.
05:08So here we go.
05:14One inch.
05:16I was off.
05:17Oh, my goodness.
05:19It's a game of inches.
05:20You know what they say, guys.
05:21It's a game of inches.
05:22It's a game of inch here, fourth down, and the Niners look like they're going to go for it.
05:25Let's see if Mack uses that big body to get some push right up the gut with a quarterback sneak.
05:30You've got D.J. Jones, former 49ers, sitting right on the nose on Matt Hennessey.
05:43A couple of tight ends in the game.
05:45Jones will sink and pick up the first down.
05:5549ers last year, 14th in the league, a red zone touchdown.
05:5857% of the time, and so many people attributed that to the absence of Christian McCaffrey.
06:03Well, yeah, Christian unlocks everything in this offense, amongst other injuries as well.
06:08The Iuke blowup of the knee in November obviously was a challenge across the board.
06:13No Trent Williams, but Brock Purdy still managed to get it in there at almost 60%, as you said.
06:19Brayden Willis in motion, two tight ends again.
06:22Denver brings pressure.
06:23Taylor bounces it outside.
06:25Looking for the sideline, and he's in.
06:27Touchdown, 49ers.
06:34That's a veteran running back in year number five that knows what he's looking at.
06:40And the defender, I believe that was Talanoa Ufunga, came flying into the hole.
06:46Right there.
06:51And Patrick saw that.
06:52Foot in the ground, bounce to the edge.
06:54No one's out there to set the edge.
06:56And out races Riley Moss to the pylon for six.
07:00Well done.
07:00With Moss and Sertan and the rookie, Jaday Barron, maybe one of the best three quarterback groups in the league.
07:07Now Jake Moody for the point after, and he's got an eight-play drive for Mac Jones in his 49ers preseason debut.
07:16And the 50-yard play to the rookie, Jordan Watkins, a big part of the early fireworks.
07:24And I beat their starting nickel that will start all year for them probably, and Jaquan McMillan, he'll be in a battle with the young guy.
07:31But a very good player, good throw, good catch.
07:34Saw a little bit of everything on that offensive drive.
07:37If you've been watching the preseason, you know there's an adjustment to the kickoff this year.
07:40A touchback now brings the ball out to the 35 instead of the 30 as it was last year.
07:45So very punitive as Jake Moody sends this away.
07:48Almost to the perfect spot.
07:50And Courtney Jackson's going to bring this out because he probably had to.
07:54A flag comes in late.
07:55He gets out to about the 28-yard line.
07:58Moody just about placed that perfectly.
07:59Isaiah Hodgins, the local kid, with the tackle there for the 49ers.
08:03And we'll check on the penalty.
08:06Yeah, I don't think you could place that any better.
08:08Return, holding, number 46, return team.
08:12Ten-yard penalty, first down.
08:17Garrett Wallow, the linebacker.
08:24Gifford wasn't getting held.
08:26He just planted his guy.
08:27Luke Gifford, big special teams addition and a good play there by Isaiah Hodgins.
08:34Bo Nix, man, what a rookie year he had.
08:36One guy?
08:37I mean, 12th overall pick.
08:39And he delivered 29 passing touchdowns last season.
08:42Second most for a rookie ever.
08:43Justin Herbert had that, still has that record.
08:48A lot of Broncos offensive starters as well.
08:52R.J. Harvey, they're a rookie running back from UCF with that first carry.
08:57R.J. Harvey, when you look at the list of most rookie touchdowns, most of them have come in the last, you know, 15 years.
09:06Right.
09:07And since they've been throwing it 40-plus times a game.
09:10Nice job there by Bryce Huff, setting the edge, staying engaged with his blocker, Kalia Davis, other guys in pursuit, making a play, holding it to a short game.
09:20Huff, the new addition, C.J. West, the rookie in there, Troy Franklin, the former Oregon Duck teammate of Bo Nix.
09:26With that catch, it'll be a first down.
09:28One thing, when you look at Robert Sala and the 49er defense, and schematically how they play, they want to keep it all in front of them, count on the rush, getting home.
09:39But when teams go to the quick game, which Denver will do a lot of, Robert knows they've got to rally up what they call a kill zone.
09:46Those short passes and really limit yards after the catch when those receivers and those weapons get the ball in their hand.
09:53You enjoying seeing Robert back around the weight room?
09:55Love it.
09:56First down and 10 for Nix.
09:58Pressure.
10:00And Sutton cannot bring it in.
10:02In coverage was Darrell Luter Jr.
10:05Cortland Sutton had it right off his fingertips, and it's time for our Levi's starting lineups as you take a look at the 49ers defense.
10:11We mentioned Huff and West, a big addition who's really impressed in training camp and OTAs before that.
10:18Gifford, Bethune, and Winters all eyes on 53.
10:21No doubt.
10:22We've got to replace Drake Greenlaw.
10:23And then on the back end, I think Siegel's going to be a really good player if it's all said and done.
10:28And Jason Pinnock comes over from the Giants, started the last couple of years.
10:31Robert Sala had him with the Jets.
10:34I think he's going to have to be a big part of what this defense is down the middle with some of the injuries they've had at safety.
10:40Back to Harvey, and Pinnock can't make that tackle.
10:43Bethune comes over, but it's after Harvey picks up about five or six.
10:51And you see Pinnock there.
10:53He reads it right, but he just took the wrong angle.
10:57Now Harvey's got some juice now.
10:58He's got some quickness.
10:59You'd love to see Jason Pinnock target that outside leg and force it back in to where everybody is in there to help.
11:07Here we go, third down.
11:08And J.K. Dobbins has come into the game and running back.
11:11Play clock is low for Nix as the Niners back out.
11:26Pressure, and Nix gets away.
11:28And he cannot complete it to Dobbins.
11:31And the 49ers nearly get home, but a flag is down.
11:40And this is going against San Francisco.
11:49That's Dallas Flowers.
11:50A really good job with C.J. West pushing it through, and then Kalia Davis on a stunt, wrapping it around.
11:57C.J. West had it cleared out for him, holding on to two offensive linemen.
12:02See if we can see the penalty here on 35, Flowers.
12:07Hard to see there.
12:08Do they have a finger up in the mask?
12:12So now first down and 10 for Denver.
12:15And Nix in play action.
12:18Loading up.
12:18Huff bearing down on him.
12:20And it's Dobbins who gets it out of the backfield.
12:22Coming up to make that tackle.
12:23Chase Lucas.
12:25A good first down game.
12:26Thursday's practice, you saw a lot of plays exactly like this for Bo Nix.
12:32And couldn't really find anything in rhythm.
12:36Looking down the field and ends up breaking, contain.
12:40Bryce Huff's in hot pursuit.
12:41But once he got out there, he is able to find his receiver there for the short game.
12:47Niners acquired him from Philly on June 1st.
12:50After a down year for him last year.
12:52Great year for the Jets two years ago.
12:54And he slotted the lineup opposite of Nick Bosa.
12:57Give the 49ers quite a bit of pass rush.
13:03Here's Harvey.
13:04Lucas can't get him.
13:05And then pushed out of bounds by Luter.
13:08Harvey's got some juice.
13:09Because that was well played.
13:10It's a crack toss.
13:11Everybody loves to run it against the 49ers.
13:14Bradley and Nye out on the edge.
13:16You're going to see.
13:16He's going to get cracked here.
13:18Now everybody is in hot pursuit.
13:21Chase Lucas just getting tangled up.
13:23You'd love to see him get out there just a step faster.
13:27And be able to turn that back in.
13:29But Chase Lucas had a nice training camp.
13:31Flashing everywhere.
13:32Love his spirit.
13:35Third down and five.
13:37Already one third down stop.
13:39That extended the drive because of a penalty.
13:41Nick's deep drop.
13:42Checks it down and Tatum Bethune is able to forge fourth down.
13:49That's exactly what I was talking about with Robert Sala and the structure of this defense.
13:54Keep it all in front of you.
13:56Force him to dump it underneath.
13:58Rally up and make the tackle.
14:00You couldn't do it any better there than Tatum Bethune.
14:02Right at his landmark where he wanted to be.
14:04Eyes on the quarterback.
14:06Saw that ball get delivered.
14:07Sure tackle on Corlin Sutton to force the punt.
14:10Jeremy Croshaw, the rookie punter from Florida in to punt it away to Junior Bergen.
14:16Eight punt returns for a touchdown.
14:17FCS record.
14:19The FBS record is nine punt returns for touchdowns held by former 49ers draft pick Dante Pettis.
14:26Bergen takes this at the 15.
14:27Makes the first man miss.
14:30Looking for the edge.
14:31Bergen gets a block.
14:33Out to the 40.
14:34Making a little magic on special teams.
14:37Sorely needed for the 49ers.
14:39Well, it's been a long time since they've had a return for a touchdown.
14:43And what a good job by Junior Bergen.
14:45Number one, secures the catch without any problem.
14:48And a little jump, Mac Jones, since the day he got here.
14:51Just in terms of his consistency and his ability to compete with intent day in and day out.
14:57Second and perhaps final possession for Mac Jones.
15:00And he throws complete to Marcus Robinson.
15:03His second catch of the game, a 12-yard pickup.
15:06And you can see, I mean, so much of this offense.
15:08And what's the secret sauce of Kyle Shanahan with quarterbacks?
15:12Read the defense.
15:13Get your feet set.
15:14And deliver the mail on time.
15:16And Mac Jones just did that perfectly.
15:19So far, so good for him.
15:20Four for four to start the game.
15:22Robinson, 64 catches for the Rams last year.
15:25Had a big year a couple years ago in Baltimore.
15:27He had 75 catches.
15:29And brings a lot of veteran experience to this receiver room.
15:32Play action.
15:33Jones trouble.
15:34And he's sacked.
15:35Nick Bonito, the second team all pro.
15:37Hard to block him with a tight end.
15:40Well, I think Luke Farrell is quite capable.
15:43And it's why he's here.
15:44He's going to come here.
15:45And he has got to be able to get a hand on Bonito.
15:47But he is so fast with that get off.
15:50He already had Luke Farrell out leveraged before he could get over to the junction point.
15:55That's the thing about Bonito.
15:56With all those sacks last year, clearly he's put on strength.
15:59And Vance Joseph, the D coordinator, knows what he's got.
16:02And that's a guy that can really anticipate the snap count.
16:0513 and a half sacks last year.
16:07And he scored two defensive touchdowns.
16:09And he comes bursting off the edge again.
16:11Mack Jones gets out of there to prevent a five-yard loss and instead maybe half a yard.
16:19And this is an area, I think, the 49ers.
16:21Now, look, give Bonito.
16:23Watch him just watch the get off and the dip around the corner.
16:26He dips that left shoulder.
16:28And you can tell that Spencer Burford, who's trying to be the swing tackle,
16:32was obviously a guard here his first few years, a starting guard,
16:36looking for that swing tackle.
16:38He was laid off the snap.
16:40Bonito was not and dipped that shoulder.
16:42And Spencer Burford could barely even get a hand on.
16:45And now it's third down and 17.
16:52Bonito again.
16:53Jones gets away this time.
16:55He's hounded.
16:56Cooper in his face.
16:58Bonito tracked him down.
16:59That ball gets thrown away.
17:00Out of bounds.
17:01Did it get to the line of scrimmage?
17:03Well, it did not get to the line of scrimmage.
17:04The question is, was it outside the pocket?
17:0732 is in the area.
17:08Oh, there you go.
17:09Patrick Taylor was in the vicinity.
17:11So, polar opposite drive from the first drive for the 49ers.
17:16And look, Trent Williams is the best left tackle in pro football.
17:21But you can tell.
17:22I mean, that time Burford was able to have a nice getoff.
17:25But Bonito was just able to run around him.
17:28And then Jonathan Cooper coming from the other side.
17:30There was nowhere for Mac Jones to step up and step out.
17:33He had to retreat.
17:35John Weeks, the new long snapper, snapping it to the new punter, Thomas Morstead,
17:39who hangs this way up.
17:41And well done.
17:42A fair catch at the 10-yard line after a 42-yard punt.
17:47Some whistles.
17:48Saran Neal, the great cover man, fired up.
17:51And Thomas Morstead gives the Broncos offense tough field position.
18:00Las Vegas to play the Raiders next week.
18:03Practice against them on Thursday.
18:05That Charger finale here might be the game where you get to see the heavier dose of the starters.
18:11So, second offensive possession for Denver after the Morstead punt.
18:16Bo Nix back in.
18:17And he's able to dump that off.
18:19But under the pressure, Chase Lucas can't connect with RJ Harvey.
18:23Unblocked.
18:24Chase Lucas, who's out there playing the nickel spot with Upton Stout not playing.
18:28You're going to see Chase there.
18:30He times it perfectly.
18:33Unblocked.
18:33Gets his hands up.
18:34Didn't want to hit Bo Nix.
18:36Certainly there.
18:36But got his hands up and was able to have an impact in enforcing that errant football.
18:42Alfred Collins in the game on the defensive line for the 49ers.
18:46Big number 95.
18:47The 43rd overall pick out of Texas.
18:52Nix again quickly.
18:53Again Harvey.
18:54One-on-one.
18:55Marquis Siegel comes up and makes the tackle.
18:58The rookie out of Kansas State.
19:01Well, great eyes by him.
19:03They sniffed out the screen.
19:04He was all over it.
19:06You're going to see Siegel.
19:07He gets back to his landmark.
19:09Sees it.
19:10He's unblocked.
19:10Look at him break down and tackle Harvey in the open field.
19:13That is not easy to do with the talents that Harvey brings to the table.
19:19So far, so good guy with the tackling.
19:21Usually a challenge in the preseason.
19:23The 49ers have been pretty sure wrapping guys up.
19:26And now third down at six.
19:31Winners comes on delayed pressure.
19:33So does Lucas.
19:34And that ball does not get back to the line of scrimmage.
19:37There is nobody in the area.
19:38A flag comes down for a safety.
19:42Out of the end zone.
19:43Intentional grounding.
19:44That will be two points.
19:45Intentional grounding.
19:46Number 10.
19:47Offense.
19:48Enforcement of that penalty results in a safety.
19:51Bo Nix had no idea where it was coming from.
19:55And what a great call by Robert Sala.
19:58Because D winners, you're going to see him there.
20:00He comes off there.
20:02And then Chase, really good job.
20:04Chase Lucas.
20:04Baton coming off the edge.
20:06No one there to block him.
20:07They attacked the turn protection.
20:10And he just put his foot on the gas pedal.
20:12And really good leverage on Bo Nix.
20:15And you'll see he is clearly in the end zone.
20:17The ball's in the end zone behind the goal line.
20:19When he unloads that for grounding.
20:21And two points for the 49ers defense.
20:25The 49ers last year were in the bottom third of the league in pressure rate.
20:28Just 33%.
20:30It feels like Robert Sala is turning it up a little bit.
20:34I know it's just the preseason.
20:35But that is what he's been brought in to solve again.
20:39And so far the Niners make it a couple of big plays on defense.
20:42It is a 9-0 lead.
20:45No break.
20:50Robert Sala, second stint, is the 49ers defensive coordinator.
20:54And this is what has been missing the last couple of years.
20:57As you see Robert, how fired up he gets.
20:59He almost gets run over there by Jalen Graham.
21:02But his energy is so contagious.
21:05The players, the coaches, the fans, guy, the broadcasters, we love having Robert Sala back in the building.
21:13And they're really not a guy known for all of his blitz balls, I promise you.
21:16He is very capable of dialing up some pressures.
21:20And Chase Lucas just paid it off.
21:21Coming unblocked, forcing that two-point safety.
21:24Set up in part by the great Thomas Morstead punt.
21:27Now a return from Junior Bergen with a head of steam.
21:30And he gets out across the 35-yard line.
21:33And here comes Mac Jones one more time, perhaps.
21:4049ers had a great opening drive.
21:42Eight plays for a touchdown.
21:43But had trouble protecting Jones on the last drive.
21:48And punted after a quick possession.
21:50He's thrown to Demarcus Robinson to open each of the first two possessions for the 49ers tonight.
22:00And Denver has changed their front four, their front five, I should say.
22:05Now with the backups out there.
22:06There's Patrick Taylor.
22:07A big arm brings him down after a short game.
22:11Malcolm Roach.
22:12Pat Sertan and Nick Benito and Talanoa Hufunga.
22:22Of course, no Drake Greenlaw tonight for Denver.
22:26Dealing with that quad injury.
22:28And there was nowhere.
22:29And Vance Joseph knows.
22:30Even his backups.
22:31Malcolm Roach just gave Big Ben Bartsch all he wanted.
22:34Pushing him into the backfield.
22:35And nowhere to go for Patrick Taylor.
22:37Quick throw out to Jordan Watkins.
22:40And he can't pick it up off the Bermuda.
22:42And it's incomplete.
22:45And now it's third down and nine.
22:48I think the grass guy may be offended you call it Bermuda.
22:51I don't think it's Bermuda.
22:52Whatever this stuff is, it is perfect.
22:55And it's the same thing Griner and what he does with the grass and the grounds.
22:59It's the same thing over at the practice facility.
23:02I've heard it's Bermuda Bandera.
23:04Well, you may be right.
23:05You do your research.
23:07And it's brand new.
23:19Jones.
23:21With time this time.
23:22And he throws into traffic.
23:25And it is intercepted.
23:29Jaquan McMillan made a difficult play on it.
23:32And a Denver defense so good at takeaways at 25 last year.
23:39Well, good, good protection for Mac Jones.
23:41And he sets his feet.
23:43And I think this ball, he just was not on the same page with Jordan Watkins.
23:47You can see it's just four-man rush, good protection, foot in the ground.
23:51And I don't know if the ball came out late, but you can tell he's well into his break right there.
23:56You'd love to see Watkins come back and fight for that football and play defense if you have to.
24:01So that ball is not intercepted.
24:06Low into the outside.
24:07And again, the timing wasn't great, but I think Jordan Watkins could have helped him out a little bit.
24:13Well, so much been made over the years, right, of how difficult it is as a rookie to play in this offense.
24:18And it seems like there's a lot expected of Jordan Watkins.
24:21Absolutely.
24:21And the timing element.
24:22And that's what it's about for him if he's going to be a major factor on this offense is that consistency.
24:28R.J. Harvey bounces it outside.
24:30Nick Martin can't catch him.
24:32And he picks up a first down before Siegel hits him.
24:37Well, you can see already, R.J. Harvey knows what kind of speed he's got.
24:41He's going to get up into the hole and then just bounce it around the corner.
24:46And Robert Beal peeks inside and then Luke Gifford and the other defenders, nobody out there to set the edge.
24:53But he paid for it because Marquise Siegel will come up and lay the hat on you as he just did there to Harvey.
25:08Nick gets it out quickly to Marvin Mims.
25:11And Mims get a little bit of a block from Sutton.
25:14Wooter comes over to help him out.
25:16Pickup of three yards.
25:20I think going back to last year, and you mentioned it, Bo Nix, with the 29 touchdowns,
25:27this offense, a lot of it is predicated on the quick game and throwing the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage.
25:34I believe Nix was second in the league last year in throws that were behind the line of scrimmage.
25:42Second down at seven here.
25:43Alfred Collins and C.J. West, the two rookies lined up inside.
25:49It's back to Harvey.
25:50West blew that play up, and then Beal comes over to disrupt, and Lucas gets the tackle.
25:55That's how you play defense up front in this scheme.
25:59If you're on the inside playing defensive tackle, you have got to be able to hold up on double teams.
26:05And then here's C.J.
26:06Watch.
26:06They're going to double him, and then as soon as Bowles releases, he splits it, forces Harvey to go find some open territory.
26:14And Robert Beal is sitting right where he should be in his gap with his eyes on the target, and he and Siegel get a nice tackle.
26:21The Siegel getting in on the act several times so far in this first quarter.
26:25So now third down and five as we're under a minute in the first.
26:33Anai with the rush.
26:34Nix loves it.
26:35Frank Lennon, and it's knocked away.
26:39Chase Locas is having himself a first quarter.
26:42He sure is, and I could not be more fired up.
26:45I love when practice transitions to games, and Chase came over last year.
26:51From the Detroit Lions, and he was on the practice squad.
26:55I don't even think he got a uniform all year, and he came back with some intentions and some intent,
27:01and he has gotten better every day, and with some injuries, he's been forced into a lot of playing time at practice,
27:07and it's been great.
27:08And with the ones, certainly with the twos, it's been great for man coverage.
27:12You couldn't do it any better right there with the pass breakup.
27:15Crowd getting into it here on fourth down and five.
27:17Knicks steps up high and snagged by Troy Franklin, and the Broncos convert.
27:32It's going to be up to the right of your screen here.
27:34It's just a crossing route, and man coverage, the right route to call.
27:38They cross in the middle of the field, and that's a good throw from Bo Nix on time and rhythm.
27:44The Broncos are knocking on the red zone door.
27:48First quarter done here, the first preseason game of the year.
27:51Eight-play touchdown drive to start the game.
27:54A sack in the end zone.
27:56Safety on intentional grounding gave the Niners two more, and it's nine to nothing, San Francisco.
28:01And great coaches are great teachers.
28:03He had his eighth child this offseason, so you know he can teach.
28:08He's almost got a whole defense of his own.
28:13Start the second quarter with R.J. Harvey tackled by a guy that's really impressed, Sebastian Valdez,
28:20another one of those rookies on this defense.
28:21Yeah, and he just outworked the offensive guard on this play
28:24because I think in the structure of this defense, you'd love to see him stay outside
28:30and not get hooked and give up that gap to the outside of him.
28:35But he was able to backdoor it, and one thing Vargas has, here he is here.
28:39Maybe he is playing an inside technique.
28:41Either way, he was able to run around Ben Powers, or Sebastian Valdez,
28:46able to run around Ben Powers, turn on the gas, and get there and make the sack.
28:50Harvey, and there's Dallas Flowers with a tackle.
28:59Nice to see him back after a couple years ago.
29:02He ruptured his Achilles, and another guy, you know, a newcomer.
29:07You see him come flying off over here.
29:10Newcomer, and has just impressed everybody with his work ethic and his intent.
29:15And you need your corners to come up and force those bounce plays,
29:20and that was well done there by Dallas Flowers.
29:22He was starting for the Colts at cornerback when he hurt that Achilles two years ago.
29:26Spent some time with Gus Bradley last year.
29:28Bo Nix, shot to the end zone, and it's broken up.
29:33Durrell Luter, Jr., in coverage.
29:36And a major battle when you talk about corners four and five,
29:40and who knows, maybe they keep six.
29:42Luter does it all right here with the exception of making the play,
29:45trying to go up and high point this ball.
29:48You would love for him to be able to intercept that
29:51and just did not get enough lift in terms of jumping,
29:53and that's hard now when you're trying to shuffle backwards,
29:57and Cortland Sutton, another big body, was able to rip it away from him.
30:00That six-foot-four.
30:01So here's Will Lutz on for the 42-yard try, or the 32-yard try,
30:06and he gets Denver on the board.
30:11So the interception in the first quarter leads to three points for Denver,
30:16but Durrell Luter prevents a touchdown for the 49ers.
30:21Brock Purdy watching with Kyle Juszczyk there from the sideline.
30:25The 49ers will get the ball at the 35-yard line,
30:32first time we've seen a touchback at that spot.
30:33Well, a wise decision, a wise decision from Dallas Flowers right there.
30:38Here we go, Carter Bradley, the son of Gus Bradley.
30:41You can see what he was able to do at Toledo and South Alabama.
30:45I will tell you one thing about Carter,
30:47and he was on the Las Vegas practice squad last year.
30:50Man, he has got an arm.
30:52He has got a rocket.
30:53The day that he got into the building and on the practice field,
30:57that ball has got some hiss on it when he's spinning it.
31:00He's only been a Niner for 10 days.
31:02He was signed on July 31st.
31:03After the Niners saw him throw in a receiver workout,
31:07Kyle Shanahan and the coaches went back
31:09and watched his 38 preseason throws from last year,
31:12including a couple against the 49ers in Vegas.
31:15I think they would love Guy to see him just set his feet and throw the ball.
31:19He's still trying to learn this offense.
31:21That's the whole thing in this offense, the quarterback's footwork.
31:25Corey Kiner, the rookie from Cincinnati,
31:28fifth in college football last year,
31:30and missed tackles, forced, missed tackles, forced, missed tackles,
31:34and he gets five yards.
31:36And he is an absolute bowling ball,
31:38and Andre Tillman just found out with that stiff arm,
31:41just took that outside linebacker and knocked him down.
31:45Really good contact balance.
31:47And, you know, when you talk about the injury to Jordan James,
31:50the fifth rounder out of Oregon,
31:52Corey Kiner has gotten a lot of play
31:54and has certainly done a good job of getting noticed by the coaches.
32:00James, the broken finger, head surgery, should be back soon.
32:04And now a flag comes in, some movement up front for the 49ers.
32:07Number 17, offense, five-yard penalty, remains second down.
32:12That's the rookie receiver, Jordan Watkins.
32:18Carter Bradley made a couple of big throws.
32:20Do you remember the end of 49ers Raiders in the preseason last year?
32:24Oh, yeah.
32:25The annexation of Clark County.
32:27The Niners only pulled off there.
32:28Well, the field goal that tied the game was set up by a couple of big throws
32:32by Carter Bradley.
32:36Try and get a replay of that finish next week when we go to Vegas.
32:42Bradley steps into that and puts it right on the money.
32:45Good to see Russell Gage with his first catch of the day.
32:49You mentioned it earlier, Tim, everything he's been through to come back healthy.
32:52And, you know, listening to Russell Gage talk,
32:54he said, I finally look like myself when I watch myself on film.
32:58Yeah, and there's no question about it.
33:00And I remember when he was in Atlanta and Tampa.
33:02Very good player.
33:03Good route right there.
33:04But there it is, the rookie, Corey Kiner, out there on P.J. Locke,
33:08picking up the unblocked player.
33:10Well done by him.
33:13Third down and four.
33:16Gage, a patellar tendon injury two years ago.
33:19Worked his way back.
33:19Was on the 49ers practice squad at the end of last season.
33:24Bradley evacuates and cannot connect with Gage.
33:33And now it's fourth down.
33:34Locked down and man coverage.
33:35Nobody opened.
33:36It was good by Carter Bradley as he got to his back foot and set his feet
33:40and was able to, ready to unload the football.
33:44But everybody gloved up in coverage.
33:46Didn't look like there was anywhere to go with the football.
33:48So he bailed out, tried to extend it, get some yards,
33:51basically ends up just throwing it away.
33:54And so second opportunity here for Thomas Morstead,
33:56the 39-year-old in his 17th season.
34:01He's played in 255 career games.
34:05He's closing in on Andy Lee's, the former 49er punter's 297 career number.
34:12And this one catching a little sun, hanging way up there.
34:16Gets bobbled.
34:18A couple broken tackles for Courtney Jackson.
34:21And now he gets out across the 45 before he's finally tracked down.
34:26Boy, great job by Siegel getting down there.
34:29You just got to make that tackle.
34:32Get the left tackle and throwing him in the lap of Stidham.
34:34Stidham threw for 365 that day.
34:38And the Niners won in overtime.
34:40And now he's on the move.
34:41And that is incomplete to the former San Francisco Giants draft pick, Lucas Krull.
34:48That's San Francisco Giants draft pick, Lucas Krull.
34:52They got big bodies at tight end.
34:54They all look about the same with the exception of the newly Evan Ingram.
34:57They're all 6'5", 6'5", and a half, 250.
35:00He'd love to have another opportunity to catch that down on his right thigh pad.
35:04Pretty open there on the keeper.
35:06Krull, third-year man from Pittsburgh.
35:08But he was drafted out of Jefferson College, Missouri, as a left-handed pitcher once upon a time in the Major League Baseball draft.
35:20Kalia Davis on the stop.
35:23Kalia has played.
35:24His challenges have been staying healthy.
35:26And he, one thing about Kalia Davis is he has got foot speed.
35:32I mean, he is very thick in the upper body.
35:35The lower body looks like he can be a track athlete.
35:38And he dips under both blocks and able to put his foot on the gas pedal and track down the runner for a minimal gain.
35:47Well done by Kalia Davis.
35:48Denver 0 for 4 on third down so far today.
35:57This is caught by Pat Bryant, and he's going to convert it before Siegel can come over and make the tackle.
36:04Yeah, breakdown in coverage there with the young guys out here.
36:07I mean, you're going to see they go across the field on the crosser.
36:12There's just nobody there.
36:14I'm not sure what the fall was, but Siegel there late to the party.
36:18There was no linebacker helping underneath.
36:20Easy completion for their first third down conversion.
36:23Instead, I was going to hand it off to Tyler Bidet, and he gets a healthy gain on first down pickup of about six, maybe almost seven yards.
36:43And it's second and short.
36:44It's a Denver team that, you know, the AFC is just so stacked at the top.
36:56Kansas City, Baltimore, people waiting for Buffalo to break through.
37:00Yeah, well, L.A. Chargers are no slouch.
37:03And that division is really tough when you look at the AFC West.
37:08And L.P. Carroll joining the Raiders.
37:10We saw their game already in this preseason come down to the wire.
37:14They tied in Seattle.
37:16Nice cut by Bidet.
37:17He's able to bounce it outside away from Nick Martin and pick up the first down.
37:23Really good vision.
37:24Foot in the ground by Bidet because Nick Martin was just flying downhill.
37:29And I'll tell you what allowed him to do that was C.J. West holding up on the double team in just enough of a push to knock him off track.
37:39And Bidet is able to bounce it and get the first down.
37:41Good drive here for Jared Stidham.
37:45Tatum Bethune, Nick Martin in the game as the 49ers linebackers right now.
37:49Good pocket Stidham dumps it down and right there to make the hit.
37:59Bethune and Bidet was able to hang on.
38:01That ball was bobbling as Bethune arrived.
38:04Pick up a three.
38:06And now Bethune is slow to rise.
38:14Plenty of 49ers just being held out today.
38:16But they are a little banged up too as well right now, Tim.
38:19And not a lot of room for error for the 49ers as Bethune takes a moment.
38:24And we'll step aside.
38:25Please have the game.
38:29Guy looks like the medical team is looking at the right ankle of Tatum Bethune as he rallied up to make that tackle.
38:35You can see as he lays out, almost knocks the ball out.
38:39But you'll see as he comes down, his right toe kind of came down.
38:43Did not get a lot of foot on the ground and just may have impinged that ankle just a little bit.
38:48I hope he's all right.
38:49So Stone Blanton comes in to play linebacker alongside Nick Martin and a full head of steam and a dead sprint for Jaleel McLaughlin.
38:58Flag comes down as McLaughlin reaches for the goal line and comes up just shy.
39:03The one-yard line is where he went out.
39:05We'll check on the penalties.
39:06Yeah, it looks like a hole and this one's coming back.
39:13Carl Sheffers officiated Super Bowl 57.
39:17Number 13, offense, 10-yard penalty, second down.
39:21Pat Bryant.
39:25Yeah, and it's out there on the edge.
39:27And there is no question that Darrell Luter was trying to get out there and be a factor on turning it back
39:33and just held bigger than Dallas by the shoulder pads.
39:37Third penalty on Denver tonight.
39:41So second down and 11 for Jared Stidham.
39:50McLaughlin, we just saw his speed remains of the game and running back.
39:55Stidham under pressure and Beal brings him down.
39:58The ball came out, the Niners say they have it, the official was saying that Stidham was down.
40:05Stidham was down by contact, third down.
40:07Love that.
40:08And number one, it was good coverage down the field.
40:10Looked like the 49ers were sitting in two deep safeties.
40:13And Stidham could not see anything open.
40:16So you're going to see, he tries to take off and go vertical.
40:20Robert Beal had already beaten the right tackle.
40:23And one thing Rob has now is he has got turn and burn speed.
40:29And he and Sebastian Vargas are able to converge on Stidham and get him down for the sack.
40:34Or Valdez, excuse me.
40:36So third down and long.
40:38Pressure off the edge.
40:40Valdez in pursuit.
40:42Stidham gets away from him.
40:44Keeps his feet and is able to get down inside the line to gain and the 15-yard line.
40:53Looking like Bo Nix.
41:00Yeah, well, these quarterbacks like to take off and run and extend the plays.
41:04And he's trying to feather it as long as he can.
41:07He's able to get around Valdez.
41:10Almost takes a big shot there from Derek Canteen.
41:14So big third down conversion.
41:16First down and goal.
41:17The first down and 10.
41:18They can still pick up the first down at the four-yard line.
41:20And Trent Shurfield, the former 49er, going in motion and now lead blocking the way for McLaughlin.
41:27Who picks up four or five yards.
41:34Pardon me.
41:34That is Tyler Bidet.
41:35Bidet, the ball carrier.
41:37Tackled by Luter.
41:41D-tackles.
41:42And everyone's going to want to run.
41:44As I said earlier, the crack toss and getting those plays quick to the outside.
41:48But everyone against this defense loves to run the duo crunch where they double off both of those defensive tackles and try to get some push on them.
41:57Get them spinning out of gaps or just getting movement into the linebackers.
42:00Well done by that Denver front.
42:02The toss.
42:06And that is Gifford who comes flying in.
42:08The linebacker, Luke Gifford, the undrafted free agent back in 2019, spent the last two years in Tennessee.
42:15Well, we just saw two plays in a row and I just talked about it.
42:19What teams love to do to this scheme on defense.
42:22Up on the line and he's just going to fly in there and beat the crack block.
42:27Still get the tackle and there is hot pursuit all around him with Marquis Siegel and Nick Martin.
42:34Both helping out.
42:34Well done by Luke Gifford.
42:36His younger brother Isaac, a rookie with Carolina, had five tackles last night.
42:40Both of them played their college football at Nebraska.
42:42Now it's third down and seven.
42:4649ers back out.
42:47A nine.
42:48Pressure up the edge and from the middle the sack.
42:52Good call by Robert Sala and great execution up front by the four-man rush.
42:59He is showing pressure.
43:00Instead of thinking there's pressure coming, everybody's going to end up bailing.
43:04It becomes a four-man rush.
43:06Party gets started by Bradley and I with the swat and the rip and good eyes by Kalia Davis in a bull rush,
43:14keeping his eyes on his target and is going to share in that sack with an eye.
43:18Davis played 13 games for the 49ers last year.
43:2142-yarder already made by Lutz.
43:23This is 32 and he's got it again.
43:26But after the big third down conversion, the legs of the quarterback stood him.
43:29The Niners defense holds strong and keeps Denver to a field goal.
43:32This has been a fun defensive first half for the 49ers, hasn't it?
43:40Well, especially when you consider Denver came out with all their front-line players,
43:44all their starters on offense.
43:46And the 49ers are resting a lot of guys.
43:49Who knows how many of those guys start day one.
43:51Maybe pin-offs.
43:52Maybe another guy or two, but really well done schematically and then the execution.
43:57And what surprised me a little bit was the tackling was really solid, which is always a challenge early in the preseason.
44:04Well, the 49ers with one joint practice, historically we've seen so many joint practices are two days long.
44:10Did the one joint practice this week take Friday off?
44:13And Cal Shanahan said the reason he doesn't like the two days is because whoever loses the first day comes back and starts a fight the second day.
44:19I promise you there would have been a fight the next day.
44:22It always works that way.
44:23It was great work and really handled well by both coaches and the players on both sides.
44:29Long, grueling practice and really a lot of good work for everybody across the board on both sides.
