00:00What begins as a routine traffic stop takes a horrifying turn
00:24when officers detect a strange, putrid smell coming from the vehicle.
00:28The search that follows uncovers a secret so disturbing it defies belief,
00:34leaving multiple officers visibly shaken, physically ill,
00:37and utterly enraged by one of the most vile discoveries ever made.
00:42Listen, I need you to calm down. I need you to calm down.
00:44I'm sorry. No, I need you to focus. Listen, calm down.
00:47We need to verify. We don't know what this is.
00:50Oh, Jesus Christ.
00:52The following is based on official police records,
00:55and most of the footage has never been seen before until now.
00:59In Essex, Maryland, just after 11 p.m. on July 28th, 2021,
01:04an officer with the Baltimore County Police Department
01:07approaches a vehicle for a traffic stop.
01:09How you doing?
01:10I'm fine.
01:11All right. You got your license and registration on you?
01:14You know why I pulled you over?
01:15I didn't pull.
01:15You know what the speed limit is?
01:17No.
01:17Okay. Speed limit is 35.
01:19Oh.
01:20And you was doing well over.
01:23Oh, I'm sorry. I swear I only thought I was doing 40.
01:26The driver, 33-year-old Nicole Michelle Johnson,
01:29hands over a state ID.
01:31Sitting beside her in the front seat is a friend who she calls BB.
01:35The officer heads back to his cruiser to run a registration,
01:39but the information doesn't quite check out.
01:41And it's high back vehicle requested, not found, or on file.
01:47Temple.
01:47So you don't have a driver license?
01:52No.
01:53Okay. And also, this vehicle is not even registered.
01:56Those tags in there are fake tags.
01:57This car has to be towed.
01:59I'm not getting my stuff out of it.
02:00Yeah, you get everything out of it, but...
02:02How long did you have this car?
02:03I've had, like, almost 30 days.
02:06As the officer returns to his cruiser to issue citations,
02:10Nicole and BB exit the vehicle.
02:12Nicole walks to the rear and opens the trunk,
02:14revealing several large bags tightly packed inside.
02:19Ms. Johnson, you come over here.
02:24So you got pulled over for the same stuff already.
02:27But that's why I went and I really, really thought I got good tags.
02:32You got to be careful with that stuff off the internet and all that kind of stuff like that.
02:36Stuff that don't even give a jack.
02:37Like, you literally see, like, we literally...
02:39Well, not her, but me and my kids are literally living in the car, like...
02:43Ms. Johnson, I just need you to sign this.
02:44This is basically telling you that you have to go to Kelso Drive courthouse within five days
02:48to request a court date.
02:50If you don't request a court date within five days,
02:52they can issue a warrant for your arrest.
02:54This is not meant to guilt.
02:55I'm not going to be here in five days.
02:57I swear to God.
02:58Please.
02:59I can't go through it anymore.
03:03Then just take me home, please.
03:05I can't take you...
03:06It's in the city.
03:07I can't go down there.
03:08There you go.
03:10This is not meant to guilt or just anything like that.
03:13I'm telling you, it's cool.
03:14I won't be here tomorrow.
03:15Tonight is my last night.
03:16What am I going through?
03:17Like, I swear to God.
03:18No, I still got to do my job until I explain to you.
03:20I know, but I'm just saying.
03:21So I'm just explaining...
03:22I'm not even talking about in Baltimore.
03:23Watch tomorrow.
03:24Y'all are going to see me on the news.
03:26Y'all are going to see me make my big favor.
03:29I swear to God.
03:31The officer has no idea her bizarre comment will soon become a show.
03:35shocking reality.
03:36With the tow truck on its way, Nicole sits on the sidewalk and calls a friend for a ride.
03:41You want to grab a couple of your things?
03:42Yes, please.
03:43Go ahead.
03:44Do you have a guarantee to do what y'all do?
03:48I'm going to do an inventory search of your car once you finish taking out what you want
03:52to take out.
03:52What's that inventory search?
03:54So inventory search is when I go through your car.
03:56For instance, say like you had $15,000 in the trunk of this car right now, and you're
04:00taking the tow and it's gone.
04:01Yo, I'm in the middle of nowhere, and when you're taking my car, I've got to take all
04:07my stuff out because, you know, I don't have anything, so if I lose this, this is all I got.
04:12Y'all keep asking me to my door.
04:15Y'all keep telling me all the way.
04:17Y'all keep saying everything's going to get better.
04:20Y'all keep saying this.
04:21It can't get no worse.
04:23It can't get...
04:23Y'all keep saying find the light, find the light, find the light.
04:28Where's the light, yo?
04:29Like, where is the light, ****?
04:31Like, where is the light, yo?
04:33Like, where?
04:34Like, where?
04:35Where?
04:35Where?
04:36You like inspirational conversations.
04:38Here we go, bro.
04:39Here we go, because I can't take no more.
04:41Like, I really can't take no more.
04:44When backup arrives at the scene, the officer taps his colleague on the arm and quietly shares
04:49that something is very wrong.
04:51I'll push, I'll push.
04:52So, yeah, hold up for me.
04:55What the earth?
04:56Give me a favor.
04:57Walk back, I can also look at that car and just see what you smell.
05:01Not drugs or anything, but see what you smell like, I'm like, bro.
05:08Something, something dead or something.
05:12Did you move in your car?
05:14This way, I look at it.
05:16What's your head in?
05:17No.
05:18No, seriously.
05:19I just need to find, I need to know.
05:21I told you.
05:21What is this right here?
05:23Huh?
05:24What is this?
05:25A bunch of dirty clothes.
05:28A bunch of, a bunch of dirty clothes.
05:29That don't smell like dirty clothes.
05:31Huh?
05:31That don't smell like dirty clothes.
05:32What do you mean?
05:33I'm about to show you.
05:36I'm about to show you.
05:38I'm about to show you right now.
05:40There's a bunch of dirty blankets.
05:41Well, this s*** has been sitting there for months and months and months and months and months.
05:45You're going to have to, you're going to have to, ma'am, I'm honest, you're going to have to open that up all the way.
05:53I'm about to open it up all the way.
05:55Yeah, you're going to have to open it up all the way for me.
05:57There's stuff all over it and everything.
05:58Oh, it's maggie.
05:59Because there's bugs and stuff over it and everything.
06:02I know, but I don't know what it is, dog.
06:05The stench is unmistakable.
06:07But finding the source of the smell is easier said than done,
06:10as whatever is inside is buried beneath endless layers of plastic trash bags.
06:15Literally ripping me all the names so you can see all the nerdy stuff.
06:21I don't think that a guilty person will be doing any s*** like this, bro.
06:24If I take all my stuff out, where am I going to go?
06:27I just need, this right here is, is, is, is drawing my attention to it.
06:32So, I'm going to have to, I need to see it.
06:33I know.
06:34Just feel it.
06:35That's why I'm trying to show you.
06:36No.
06:36I'm just, I'm, I'm watching.
06:39What happened?
06:40No, I'm just telling them, giving them some advice.
06:43Okay.
06:47I'm telling them you're just going to find a bunch of dirty blankets.
06:51Yeah, but I need to, I need to know what that smell is.
06:53I am.
06:54I'm about to show you.
06:55Nicole turns to the officer for help, and he carefully begins cutting through the thick
06:59layers with a knife.
07:01You got to get all the way through to the dirty because he closed.
07:06Why you got all these blankets?
07:08Huh?
07:08Why you got all these blankets?
07:09Because we stay in hotels, from the hotel to the park.
07:12Like, I can even get to the hotel.
07:13No, no, no, no.
07:13You can finish it.
07:14I was just curious.
07:15Oh, yeah.
07:15I can even get to the hotel receipt for you.
07:17Okay.
07:18You ain't got to go through that.
07:19I was just curious.
07:21Keep finding blankets.
07:23I ain't found one place.
07:24Keep finding them.
07:25Oh, you go, you can keep finding them.
07:27What?
07:27You see them right there as soon as you open the suit?
07:29What?
07:30Huh?
07:30Keep finding it.
07:31What?
07:32Oh, yeah.
07:32As soon as you open it, you go find them.
07:35Let's stand over the front of this car and make sure she don't go nowhere.
07:38After cutting through multiple layers of trash bags, officers finally uncover a black suitcase.
07:43Just open the suitcase and we can be good after that.
07:46Oh, yeah.
07:48This will be more blankets still.
07:50Can you cut it from here?
07:52Can you cut it one more time?
07:54And this is what it smells, Rita.
08:00What is that?
08:01Huh?
08:01What is that?
08:03Dirty thing.
08:03No.
08:04Open.
08:04Pull it out.
08:05Pull it out.
08:05What are you calling it?
08:08Dirty thing for my husband.
08:11Pull the whole bag out.

12:19That's it!
12:20Okay!
12:21The officer takes the opportunity to walk away and regain his composure.
12:25But the emotional aftershock is hard to contain.
12:33All I seek the refuge in you from the whisperings of an accursed devil who whispers into the hearts of men.
12:39Can I talk to you for a second?

13:22sickened state.
13:23I'm gonna take a pepper spray happen.
13:25No!

14:06They took the f*** out of the car and they couldn't take it out in front of the police!
14:11They're skating around with the bodies in my car!

14:57I can't vision it!
14:58After telling the tow truck driver his services will no longer be needed, officers make the
15:02difficult decision to get a closer look in order to confirm what lies beneath the maggot-covered
15:08blanket.
15:09I can lift it up, it doesn't really bother me, but it's gotta be a three or four-year-old
15:13blanket.
15:14You get it?
15:15My gloves are already.
15:16The problem is the body is this soothed pin.
15:19It's in a pin position.
15:20Yes.
15:21Oh my God, dude.
15:22That's a f***.
15:23That's a f***.
15:24That's a f***.
15:25That's a f***.
15:26100%.
15:27It's got girl clothes, right?
15:29But it...
15:30Come here.
15:31It almost looks like it has the pigmentation like Michael Jackson had.
15:39That's right.
15:40So Homicide's gonna have to come out.
15:41Definitely coming out for this.
15:42There's no way they're not.
15:43Right.
15:44Right.
15:45Um, ME's gonna have to come here.
15:50Probably do warrants for the house.
15:53I mean, yeah.
15:54100%.
15:55Well, they're gonna have to find out who this kid is.
15:57The shrunk that skin is too.
16:00Oh, it's been wrapped in this sheet for, I don't know how long.
16:04I don't know how long.
16:05I'm not a medical examiner, but like I said, just remember cameras are stolen.
16:09Right.
16:10Um, but this is, this is f***ing.
16:15At least a week.
16:17I mean, I...
16:1911, 10, 18, 14, 15.
16:22I've seen some stuff, but it just sucks.
16:24It's like, I don't know.
16:25I guess it hits him harder than me because I'm just a...
16:27Well, I've had trauma earlier on.
16:30But basically, uh, like my daughter turns five Saturday.
16:33You know what I mean?
16:34This is 100% a five-year-old kid.
16:36What they've uncovered is just the beginning of a dark and tragic case.
16:40With more horrors and buried truths still waiting to be uncovered.
16:44For now, the decision is made to take both women to the police station.
16:48Stand up for me.
16:49Where am I going at?
16:50We're gonna be going to the precinct.
16:51To the precinct.
16:52For what?
16:53Ma'am, stand up.
16:54Enough.
16:55Stand up.
16:56Walk.
16:57Be good.
16:58You are okay.
16:59You know you don't be with me.
17:01You are okay, BB.
17:02Just be good, yo.
17:03Just be good.
17:04I'm gonna, I'm gonna tell the truth.
17:06Just be good.
17:07Come here and stand over here.
17:08Stand over here.
17:09Stand over here.
17:10Stand over here.
17:11Just stand here.
17:12Lean up against the caller, okay?
17:14Can you please tell them that she is?
17:19Ma'am, you can talk to whoever you need to talk to.
17:22I just wanted to say why she was reacting the way she is.
17:25She's mentally retorting.
17:26She really don't want anything that's going on.
17:28You can talk to anybody you need to talk to back at the precinct, okay?
17:32That's how we're going to do this, all right?
17:33Okay, I'm sorry.
17:35I don't have nothing.
17:36I'm clean.
17:37Ma'am, can you stop talking, please?
17:39Enough.
17:39Enough.
17:40Enough.
17:41You should just keep talking.
17:43You just keep talking.
17:45When I told you to stop talking, you should keep talking.
17:47Hold on, get the bag off.
17:49My phone is in there.
17:50You got a knife?
17:51Don't call my bag.
17:52Don't call my bag.
17:53Relax.
17:54Don't call my bag.
17:56My phone is in there.
17:57Ma'am, it'd be in your best interest not to move on.
17:59Take your handcuffs off.
18:02Put the bag off her.
18:04Put the bag on her.
18:05Put the arm back.
18:06I'm not playing.
18:07I'm not playing.
18:11Get in the car.
18:13Get in the car.
18:14Now.
18:16Get in the car.
18:17Get in the car.
18:17I'm going to put you in the car.
18:18That's your choices.
18:20Can I have my bag, though?
18:21I don't care.
18:21Get in the car.
18:22My phone is in there.
18:23Get in the car.
18:24Your bag will be with you.
18:25What is she diagnosed with?
18:27I don't know, but she can't read.
18:29She can't anything.
18:31Like, she's totally retarded.
18:32Like, she don't have anything to do with nothing.
18:34Just because she can't read doesn't mean she's retarded.
18:36No, I'm telling you.
18:38Like, I don't know what she's with, but she really don't have anything to do with anything.
18:43You got anything on you?
18:44No, ma'am.
18:44All right.
18:45It's $20 in my bra.
18:47In your bra?
18:47Yes, ma'am.
18:48On the side, I think.
18:49What is this?
18:51Part of your underwear?
18:52It's a bead, Jean.
18:54Part of your underwear?
18:55No, ma'am.
18:56It's like a waist bead.
18:58For what?
18:59You can rip it.
19:00Just rip it.
19:01Just pull it and rip it.
19:02Like, why are you right there?
19:04Yeah.
19:06Sorry, is it just a bead?
19:07Is it just a bead?
19:07Yes, ma'am.
19:08They're going to have to take it back.
19:09They're going to have to take it off when they get the pre-sand.
19:11I'm going to make sure there's nothing else.
19:12That's why I said just...
19:12All right, go ahead.
19:13She's got $20 right here.
19:15Both women arrive at the station and are placed in separate rooms.
19:19While Nicole seems to understand the reason for her arrest,
19:22Bebe appears confused and continues to demand answers.
19:25So, I'm here putting...
19:27Ma'am, you don't actually...
19:29I asked you that question about three, four times.
19:31And I've told you the same answer about three, four times.
19:34I'll tell you again.
19:36You are in police custody.
19:38You are going to be sitting right there in handcuffs
19:40with your bag right there
19:42until somebody with the equal rank that knows that was out there with this call
19:47or somebody that ranks higher than me comes to me and tells me to do something else.
19:51So, get comfortable, relax.
19:55You're going to be here for a while.
19:56It is what it is.
19:58Sorry.
19:59So, what's my right?
20:01So, you're just going to lock somebody up with no right?
20:03Ma'am.
20:04Not my right.
20:05Ma'am.
20:05What's your first name?
20:07Kazadi.
20:07Kazadi?
20:08Yes.
20:09It's Kazadi.
20:10Do I kill somebody?
20:11Ma'am?
20:12Do I kill somebody?
20:13I don't know.
20:14So, why...
20:15But what I do know is you're going to be in handcuffs in that chair until someone says otherwise.
20:21I don't got no one.
20:22So, why am I not ready?
20:23What's your last name?
20:24Kazadi.
20:25What's your last name?
20:26Cheeboller.
20:27So, now you guys are going to lock me and frame me for something you're not telling me?
20:40Man, I didn't frame you with anything.
20:44I'm not Baltimore County.
20:45I'm one person.
20:47I'm just a cog in a machine.
20:49Okay.
20:49Hey, you telling me my hand is clean.
20:57I'm clean.
20:59Right?
21:00Do you need hand sanitizer?
21:02Is that what we're asking about?
21:03You are detained.
21:04For why?
21:07Until one or somebody out there...
21:09You understand I'm backup, right?
21:12You can ask me a thousand times, but I can't tell you what I don't know.
21:16Like, it's not going to be some fairy that comes to the wall and says,
21:18here, Officer Bowling, boop, here's the information that she's asking for.
21:22I ain't got it.
21:23I'm under arrest.
21:27You can tell me that.
21:28That's like a loop.
21:29What exactly?
21:30That's like a loop.
21:31If I get sick in here, it's going to happen to...
21:34If I get sick, if I make no phone call from nobody, I'm not okay.
21:38It's going to be a quantity.
21:41Do you need water?
21:45I'm not crazy.
21:47I didn't say you were.
21:48I asked you, did you need water?
21:50That's what I asked you.
21:51Yes, I need water.
21:52Okay.
21:53I can arrange for that for you.
21:55In a separate room, the officer waiting with Nicole informs her that he can't speak with
21:59her about the case.
22:00Left in silence, she begins talking to herself.
22:03It was okay.
22:05She and me are arguing about it.
22:08I'm more like, what am I all there for?
22:10Just open it and let them look at me.
22:12Nicole, I should have done that question with you.
22:15So stupid.
22:17So stupid.
22:18So stupid.
22:19I don't want to wrestle, babe.
22:21I can't hate anything, babe.
22:22Because this is love for you.
22:25This is love for you.
22:27Nicole, appearing to wrestle with guilt, will soon have an opportunity to explain the grim
22:32discovery.
22:33Meanwhile, Bibi makes a separate request.
22:40What is your health complaint, madam?
22:45I'm not going to hospital.
22:46What's wrong with you?
22:47My knee hurts.
22:48I'm not feeling good.
22:49Your knee hurts.
22:50You're not feeling well.
22:51I'm not feeling well.
22:53You're conscious and breathing.
22:54So to me, you look fine.
22:55I'm not.
22:56I'm not fine.
22:57Okay.
22:58Then what's wrong?
22:59I'm not fine.
23:00Okay, then let's discuss what's wrong.
23:02So I can get you the help you need.
23:03The officer informs his supervisor of Bibi's complaint.
23:06But when he returns for details, he's met with an interesting response.
23:10How bad is your knee?
23:12Can you see it?
23:13Can I have a reminder every time?
23:15Oh, wow.
23:16That's my knee for too hard.
23:19What knee is hurting?
23:20This one.
23:22Okay, show me where you're hurting.
23:23My mother got more sick.
23:25I'm not mad.
23:25He's on your big toe.
23:27Okay.
23:27I can't that.
23:28What did you think?
23:30Why did you get that?
23:33Look at me.
23:35Look at me.
23:35What if it's a right thing?
23:37Okay.
23:39Bibi is then informed that if she chooses to go to the hospital, she'll need to wear shackles.
23:44I can walk.
23:45No.
23:46I can take that.
23:46No.
23:47That's not as weird.
23:47If you're in the hospital, you're getting shackles on.
23:49Point blank for you.
23:50If and a but.
23:51It's not up for the beat.
23:53For the bad?
23:54Yeah.
23:55Do you want to go to the hospital or not?
23:58Nah.
23:58I changed my mind.
24:00All right.
24:01All right.
24:02Mind has been changed.
24:03I bet you that.
24:05I know my faith.
24:06I'm going to go.
24:07Rhino, if they're questioning me for something, I know my faith.
24:11But definitely let me go.
24:14Oops.
24:15What?
24:15Excuse me.
24:16I'm sorry.
24:16Ma'am, the language barrier, you got to slow down.
24:19Your accent is really thick.
24:20So I'm trying to peace.
24:21I should talk.
24:22Yeah.
24:25Hands on me.
24:27I'm ready for the.
24:29But that's it.
24:30Maybe.
24:31Maybe we.
24:32We are going to take.
24:34Maybe.
24:34Respect.
24:35Please sit down.
24:41Can I sit down?
24:42I'm going to sit down for long.
24:43I'm going to stretch my legs.
24:45I'm going to tell you one more time to sit down.
24:46I'm going to put you back in the chair.
24:47Your choice.
24:47I'm going to sit down.
24:49Madam, if I get out of this chair, I'm going to put you back in that chair and you're not going to like me.
24:54So I'm going to ask you one more time to sit down.
24:55I'm sitting down.
24:56No, actually, you're standing.
24:57I'm going to be standing.
24:59Thank you.
24:59I'm going to be standing.
25:01Like, I'm asking.
25:02I'm asking.
25:03Let me make a phone call.
25:06Let me see what I'm here for.
25:09And then you guys are holding me with nothing.
25:12So you thought standing up is going to solve that problem?
25:15No.
25:16Absolutely not.
25:18You are detained.
25:20End of story.
25:22End of message.
25:23My name is Officer Bowling and I approve this message.
25:26Bowling?
25:26You're not Bowman.
25:27My name is Officer Bowling.
25:28I got a name tag on my chest that says the exact same thing that I said.
25:32It's not Bowman.
25:33It's Bowling.
25:34It's not Bowman.
25:36Okay.
25:36In the other room, Nicole continues talking to herself, visibly wrestling with her own
25:42thoughts.
25:42I knew it was the reason why I felt like ****.
25:45I knew it was the reason.
25:46We just had more in there ****.
25:49So I said, I can't take no more.
25:51Look, since I said I can't take no more, here we go.
25:55Much, much more.
25:57That's what they told me.
25:59They said I was going to keep it punished.
26:01Keep it punished.
26:02Keep it punished.
26:03A state is such a thing as a death penalty still.
26:07A certain state has it.
26:09Not this one.
26:11I don't think so.
26:12We need to have it.
26:14I don't think if I would have known, I would have ran before Charlie.
26:17I was even politely like, excuse me, can you cut this for me?
26:23**** idiot, bro.
26:26The scent of decay clings to Nicole, growing so strong that it becomes unbearable for others
26:31in the station.
26:32One officer fills the room with an odor spray, but when that fails to help, he brings in
26:37an air scrubber and tries the spray a second time.
26:41Soon after, a decision is made to transfer the two women to another facility for interviews
26:45with detectives.
26:46So, I got your bag.
26:49You got your shoes on.
26:51All you gotta do now is get in the car.
26:53And we on the road.
26:56So, would you like to stand up or would you like us to drag you to the car?
27:02Your choice.
27:04You an adult.
27:04Why do you want to talk to me right now?
27:07Stand up.
27:08Walk.
27:10To the car.
27:11Uh-uh.
27:12I am going up.
27:13That's fine.
27:13You said you had knee pain, so I was going to make sure you can walk fine.
27:15Come on.
27:17Get my bag, please.
27:19Nope.
27:20I want my bag.
27:21I don't care what you want.
27:22Can I have my thing?
27:24Safe travels.
27:25Let's go.
27:27Like I said, if something happens to me tonight, it's going to be, it's going to be war.
27:35Yes, ma'am.
27:38I hate it here.
27:39Back at the scene, officers standing watch over the body discuss the tragic case and
27:45question the one thing weighing on everyone's mind.
27:48The group's pretty f***ed up about this.
27:50Right.
27:50Really, everybody who saw it's pretty f***ed up right now.
27:55Well, I mean, I saw it.
27:57You saw it?
27:57I saw it.
27:59I ain't trying to look.
28:00But it's...
28:01That's the way he's got all these grown f***ed men all f***ed up.
28:04No, I mean, well, I was f***ed up before I got this job, but...
28:08I didn't mean like that.
28:09No.
28:09I'm f***ed up like that.
28:10No, I know, I know.
28:11I'm just saying it's weird that I could understand if this child was younger, like baby sage, but
28:18it's not.
28:19So I'm like, it's kind of dumbfounded, like, what the hell?
28:24Like, I'd love to just know the reasoning.
28:26Same.
28:26I'm so f***ing curious.
28:28The whole story.
28:29Yeah.
28:30Like, what?
28:30The whole story.
28:31Like, what the hell?
28:32Like, what?
28:34How did this even come to be?
28:36Uh-huh.
28:37Nicole enters the interrogation room with much to explain.
28:40She tells detectives she was in Essex to meet a man for prostitution while Bebe waited
28:45in the car.
28:46She claims she's been aware of the foul smell.
28:49but assumed it was a dead rat.
28:51Well, me and my homegirl was doing so much to try to get the smell, get the smell, get
28:55the smell.
28:56But we never noticed it was coming from the back because we don't sit in the back.
28:59How'd you try to get rid of the smell?
29:00I mean, we always thought it was coming through the front of the car, so we got it power washed.
29:07You power washed the car to try to get the smell away?
29:09You're starting to understand why this sounds a little ridiculous?
29:18After speaking with detectives, investigators note it was clear that Bebe was mentally challenged
29:24and had no knowledge of the incident.
29:26They contact her mother and arrange for her to be taken home.
29:30As for Nicole, her vague story isn't enough to satisfy investigators, given the second horrifying
29:36discovery made at the crime scene.
29:38The discovery of a second child came only after homicide detectives began sorting through
30:02Nicole's belongings, though the signs had been present from the very start.
30:07Me and my kids were literally living in the car.
30:09Like, were you steaming around with the bodies in my car?
30:12It was okay.
30:16Then the whole time I hit them.
30:18In a black and yellow plastic bin buried beneath the bags and the suitcase containing the little
30:23girl were the aged remains of a small boy.
30:27The child's body had been wrapped in blankets and placed in multiple layers of trash bags,
30:32similar to the girl.
30:34Their relation to Nicole comes as even more of a shock.
30:37Do you recognize this person at all?
30:41Who's that?
30:42That's their mother.
30:44Who is that?
30:45Their mother.
30:47That's their mother?
30:48Mm-hmm.
30:53Who are they?
30:56Who?
30:57Because that's when I hit them.
30:59If you look at them when I hit them.
31:01So that's who?
31:02That's Johnson.
31:03And that's who?
31:04Remember.
31:05Okay.
31:05When you look at them when she hit them and when I hit them, you probably got this picture
31:09off her page, but it definitely came from mine.
31:12Because if you look at them when she hit them, they were very not taken care of.
31:17If you look at them when I hit them, they were very well taken care of.
31:21Seven-year-old Jocelyn Marie James Johnson and five-year-old Larry Darnell O'Neil were each left in Nicole's care two years ago by her sister, Deschelle, who claimed she was unable to care for them at the time.
31:35Investigators also learned Deschelle has an active case with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services for an eight-month-old infant who was temporarily taken into their care given the current investigation.
31:45She didn't take care of kids.
31:49She didn't do to them what happened to them.
31:53Yeah, but it, I, okay, so she's a better person for leaving, okay?
31:58And any kind of predicament, like, she knew the predicament wasn't okay.
32:03She knew the predicament was f***ed up.
32:07She knew, like, she left her kids literally with me selling my a**.
32:12She left her kids in the room.
32:17She thought you were going to take care of them, I guess.
32:19I never told her I was going to.
32:21I never asked her to.
32:24Hey, come on, bro.
32:25I used to have to yell at the mother about washing them.
32:29I used to have to yell at the mother about feeding them.
32:33Like, I used to have to yell at her about everything.
32:36Despite portraying herself as the better caregiver, Nicole couldn't even spell the young girl's name.
32:41She also couldn't recall either child's birthday.
32:45Whatever belief remained that she'd shown love or responsibility would soon be shattered by the grim truths surrounding their deaths.
32:53She lowers herself to the floor as the interview continues.
32:56Well, let me ask you, let me tell you this, right?
32:58We spoke to your sister and a bunch of your family members, right?
33:02Mm-hmm.
33:03I don't know that everything that you're saying is making sense.
33:05What do you mean?
33:07Well, I'm just saying.
33:08What do you mean?
33:09What did y'all speak about?
33:10Y'all spoke about her leaving our children?
33:13Huh?
33:13Y'all spoke about her leaving our children?
33:15Well, we spoke about a lot of stuff.
33:20And of course it's all going to be against me, huh?
33:23Oh, I mean, I don't know.
33:25Even my mom?
33:27Oh, yeah.
33:28Leave back your mom.
33:29He tells Nicole he won't discuss his conversations with her family,
33:32then steps out to check on her paperwork,
33:35leaving her alone to imagine what they may have shared behind her back.
33:38I'm not going to tell you what they say.
33:40What they say?
33:43What they say?
33:45What they say?
33:46I done bust my ass for all of my life.
33:49My mother?
33:50My mother?
33:51Lady, you had me out here selling my ass.
33:54You told me not to give that girl her kids.
34:00I would have gave them back.
34:01I said this weekend when I'm coming back, I'm giving her her kids.
34:04You told me not to.
34:06They about to put me under the gym.
34:09They so selfish and so broke.
34:16There's a group of people here.
34:18Yeah, all family.
34:19Just people meet back.
34:21They sure where they been at when I've been growing up.
34:23I guess I ran away with something.
34:25Like, watch.
34:26I already know that's what they said.
34:28Now I'm not talking anymore.
34:29Man, since I'm a liar, and since I'm a this, and since I'm a that, and since I'm a this,
34:36I'm not saying anything else.
34:38Hey, come on, bro.
34:39All the kids that I've been around in all my life, I'm going to wait until my niece and
34:43nephew to kill one.
34:47I've been raising kids all my life so much, they thought they were actually mine.
34:51I'm going to wait until my niece and nephew to kill some.
34:54While Nicole earlier stated she was living in her car, investigators located a hotel where
34:59she'd recently been staying.
35:01In the room, they find two stuffed animals, as well as two rose bears, one blue and one
35:07pink, with ribbons around their necks that read, always and forever.
35:11I think they're like memorials.
35:14That's what it seems like.
35:15Always and forever.
35:17The website, though, and we'll constantly get the ones left.
35:20Even with that little ribbon.
35:22We just think it's a little morbid.
35:24With the exception of the stuffed animals, there are no children's clothing, belongings,
35:34or items to indicate any children had been present.
35:37This, along with their advanced state of decay, leaves many questions as to how long the children
35:43had been in the trunk of the car, and what led to their deaths.
35:46Can I talk, or can I talk through, like, I need my mother to be a part of this conversation.
35:54The detective tells Nicole they won't allow her to speak with her mother just yet, and reminds
36:21her that it's important to tell her story to investigators first.
36:24And they came from TV, and I was doing so good with them.
36:28And you didn't want to give them back?
36:30Nobody even wanted them back until maybe three months ago.
36:34Is that when someone reached out to you?
36:36Who reached out to you?
36:37Huh?
36:38Your sister?
36:39Yes.
36:39Okay.
36:40Well, when she reached out to me, she barely didn't even care.
36:43And then we were supposed to arrange for her to get them back, and she, hey, maybe next
36:49weekend, like, she didn't even care.
36:52They were forcing her.
36:54They were forcing her to even say anything.
36:56Text messages obtained from Nicole's phones reveal multiple conversations with her sister,
37:01DeShell, who sent Nicole money and checked in on the children frequently.
37:05She asked several times to see them, eager for them to meet their new sibling.
37:10However, DeShell claims Nicole blocked her from seeing them.
37:14Now, for the first time, Nicole begins to explain the reason why, beginning with what
37:19happened to her niece, Jocelyn.
37:21It was really an accident.
37:23Okay, what happened?
37:26I gave her B.A.
37:29I can't hear you, what?
37:30I gave her B.A.
37:31And then the next thing I know, she just wasn't saying anything or nothing or nothing or nothing.
37:42Okay.
37:44So you gave her a beating?
37:46And then she was not responsive anymore?
37:49Like, it was mistakes.
37:50Like, I scared them children so good.
37:52Like, it was a mistake.
37:54Like, I just was trying to discipline.
37:58Explain to me how it happened.
38:01Like, she got in trouble for something one day that I didn't beat her for.
38:09Like what?
38:10Stealing something or going in the refrigerator or doing something or something.
38:15And she did it again and she did it again.
38:17And then the last time it was just like, and I was probably more frustrated than I should
38:23have been with life period, with everything, with why these, they leave me with the kids,
38:28why nobody's helping me, why nobody's calling me, where is their mom, where is my family,
38:33like, what, like, I...
38:34Investigators interviewed a resident at one of the hotels Nicole frequented, who reported that
38:55Nicole often used harsh language and regularly cursed at the children, particularly the girl.
39:01Another witness recalled hearing Nicole abusing Jocelyn through the thin walls and, at times,
39:06hearing the child yelling for her to stop.
39:08You were upset because she was taking things, like, from the refrigerator and stuff.
39:12She was doing all kinds of stuff.
39:14Okay.
39:14Like, she was taking stuff, like, she was getting the boy in trouble.
39:17Like, she was just doing all kinds of stuff.
39:18And you disciplined her.
39:20Yes.
39:20Okay.
39:21And it went too far.
39:23Okay.
39:23How many times do you think you might hit her?
39:27I don't know.
39:29But I know she fell.
39:31Fell on what?
39:32On the floor.
39:33Was she standing on something?
39:35Mm-hmm.
39:35Now was she...
39:36She was just standing up straight.
39:37Okay.
39:39And where did you hit her?
39:41I just started doing that.
39:44Okay.
39:45Like, punching her in the head?
39:47No.
39:48Where?
39:48No.
39:49Where?
39:51Like, I think I maybe slapped her in the face, but I didn't punch her in the head.
39:56Like, it was more like me hitting on our body until she fell.
39:59How did she fall?
40:00Backwards?
40:01Forward?
40:02Sideways?
40:03On her head?
40:04I know she had a head, but I can't remember exactly how it was.
40:07She fell.
40:08She hit her head?
40:10Okay.
40:11Do you remember where?
40:12On the head?
40:13No.
40:14Did she hit her head on something other than the floor?
40:17No, but the floor was extremely hard.
40:19The floor was extremely hard?
40:24And I was so scared.
40:26Like, I was so scared.
40:28Okay.
40:28What did you...
40:29When she went to the floor, was she crying or was she quiet?
40:33She was quiet.
40:35Quiet?
40:37And did you...
40:37What did you do after that?
40:39I tried.
40:40I think I just tried to bump her chest.
40:42Like, I was bumping on her chest really, really hard.
40:45Like, I got to the baby.
40:48She was like, I don't know.
40:49Like, I was just trying.
40:50Like, I was just bumping on her chest.
40:52I was just trying to get her back.
40:55Like, I was just...
40:56Okay.
40:59And then what did you do next?
41:01I laid in the bed with her.
41:02You laid her in the bed and laid next to her?
41:04Where was the boy at this time?
41:06I was sleeping in the other bed.
41:08Okay.
41:10Where?
41:12And I stayed in that room with her.
41:14When do you think that was?
41:16I told you, maybe last year.
41:19And then, what did you do with her body after that?
41:22I just put it in a suitcase and I kept her.
41:25Jocelyn's death is believed to have occurred around May of 2020,
41:30approximately 14 months before the traffic stop.
41:33Despite this, Nicole continued texting DeCherl
41:35as though Jocelyn was still alive.
41:38In April of 2021, DeCherl even thanked Nicole, writing,
41:42Thank you for taking care of them so well.
41:44Nicole admits she continued traveling from hotel to hotel,
41:48carrying the young girl in the suitcase,
41:50eventually storing her in the trunk of the car.
41:53Jocelyn's body arrived at the medical examiner's office,
41:57still wrapped in a comforter that contained a cigarette butt.
42:00Numerous bruises were found on her body,
42:02but an exact cause of death could not be determined
42:05due to the advanced stage of decomposition.
42:08Still, investigators ruled her death a homicide,
42:11citing evidence of physical abuse and neglect.
42:14With Jocelyn's fate uncovered,
42:16investigators turned to what happened to her nephew,
42:18five-year-old Larry,
42:20whom Nicole refers to by the name Stink.
42:23So, help me explain the other child, what happened.
42:28So, he was still with you
42:30when the girl's now in the suitcase, in the car.
42:36He didn't even want to go anywhere.
42:38That's why they said they talked to my family.
42:40My family don't know me.
42:41Like, you can ask all my friends.
42:44Like, as much as I tried to push him off
42:46or I wanted to drive him off
42:47and I knew I needed to drive him off,
42:49he just wanted to be me.
42:51So, what led to the next incident with the other child?
42:56I don't know.
42:57Like, I honestly don't know
42:59because it was like one minute we was playing
43:01and then one minute it was just like,
43:04it was like we were playing.
43:05Like, we was playing.
43:06I think something hit him in the leg.
43:09Yeah, but that wouldn't cause him to die.
43:13Well, why would he die, though?
43:15I thought it was like a main artery or something.
43:17Okay, well, explain that to me.
43:19Yeah, what happened?
43:22I don't know, but then I know I saw him bleeding.
43:26In his leg.
43:27Where at on his leg?
43:29I don't mean to.
43:31Let me break it somewhere.
43:33Right, inside of his left thigh?
43:35Yeah, but I did, like...
43:37Was the blood dripping, was it?
43:39The only way that I noticed it...
43:45And honestly, I didn't even notice it
43:47until I started trying to stink, stink, stink, stink.
43:52And then when I started looking at his clothes,
43:54they was bloody.
43:55The detective offers Nicole a cigarette
43:57and allows her to smoke in the interrogation room
43:59as she continues her story.
44:01What caused the boy's injury with the blood in his thigh?
44:05I can't remember what exactly he was playing with.
44:10And I think I yelled at him.
44:11I think I swung on him for playing with him.
44:15But I can't remember what...
44:16Is there a chance you hit him afterwards and...
44:19I didn't see the thing.
44:22I didn't...
44:23I talked about it.
44:23But you said he swung on him.
44:24Yeah, because he was playing with something.
44:26I didn't see the thing that...
44:27I told you I didn't see the thing that was in his leg
44:29until it was like...
44:31It was just like...
44:32And what was it?
44:33I don't...
44:34I never even looked at him.
44:35I never even took his pants off.
44:36I just seen the blood.
44:37And I yelled at him.
44:38Like, well, I didn't yell at him
44:40when I seen the blood.
44:40I yelled at him.
44:41Like, I don't even remember what it was.
44:43Larry's body arrived at the medical examiner's office
44:46still wearing Paw Patrol pajamas.
44:49His body was also covered in bruises.
44:51And while superficial wounds were found on his legs,
44:54they showed no signs of deep bleeding.
44:57However, internal bleeding was noted
44:59around both his knee and elbow,
45:01suggesting trauma before death.
45:03Like his sister,
45:04Larry's advanced state of decomposition
45:06made it impossible to determine
45:07an exact cause of death.
45:10Although she claims not to know exactly
45:12what caused his injury,
45:13she clearly remembers what happened next.
45:16He was just, like, getting drowsy.
45:18Like, just getting drowsy.
45:19Like, the last thing he said...
45:24You said the last thing he said?
45:29He said, honey, can you lay me down?
45:32What's that?
45:32He said, can I lay him down?
45:34Can you lay him down?
45:35Yes, because he was sitting up in the chair.
45:37And he said, honey, can you lay me down?
45:41And I said, yeah, honey.
45:43And I went to smoke,
45:46and I turned back around,
45:47and it was like,
45:48stay, stay, stay, stay.
45:52And he would not answer me.
45:57Where did you lay him down at?
45:59On the back seat of the car.
46:01Okay.
46:04And this was about two months ago?
46:05Or is it more...
46:08This month is what?
46:10Well, it's the very end of July.
46:15I think May.
46:18Okay.
46:19About two months ago.
46:20Yes.
46:21I've been sitting there for months and months and months and months and months.
46:25In June of 2021, Nicole sent a video to her friend showing the black and yellow tote in the back of her car
46:31and spoke about getting odor absorber.
46:34According to Nicole, the child would have already been deceased at this time
46:38and would soon join his sister in the trunk of the car.
46:41Investigators later discovered that neither child had ever seen a doctor in Maryland,
46:46had never been enrolled in school,
46:47and neither had been reported missing.
46:50One additional detail raised further concern.
46:53Both children appeared unusually small for their ages.
46:57It's got to be a three- or four-year-old kid.
46:59Me and my...
47:00Me and their mom...
47:01The girl was, according to your timeline, about six years old when this happened?
47:06Yes.
47:08And she only weighed 18 pounds.
47:11You think that's after all it is?
47:13Because they were not tiny.
47:14Like, you see them in the pictures.
47:16The pictures that y'all printed out are the pictures that I took.
47:18The boy was only 21 pounds.
47:22I don't see how.
47:23Because they ate all the time.
47:25They ate all the time.
47:26and they ate all the time.
47:28They ate everything.
47:29So, maybe...
47:30I mean, is that maybe a contributing factor here?
47:33No, I didn't.
47:34If some kind of trauma happened, would it be made worse?
47:38Yeah, I didn't starve them, though.
47:40I didn't starve them.
47:41According to doctors, however,
47:43it would have taken several months of malnourishment
47:45for the children to attain their low weights.
47:48The investigation concluded that both minor children lost their lives
47:51due to the neglect and abuse inflicted on them by their Aunt Nicole.
47:55I just can't believe they came up here
47:57and made it seem like I was some type of bad person.
48:02Like I was some type of troubled person.
48:05Like, yes, I've been depressed all my life
48:07because I wanted a mama.
48:10But I can't believe that she really came up here
48:13and made it seem like I was a bad person.
48:16One month after her arrest,
48:18Nicole's mother emailed Baltimore public officials,
48:21pleading with them to intervene and protect her remaining grandchild.
48:24The email additionally criticized social workers
48:27and Deschelle for not safeguarding the children.
48:30Multiple news outlets reported that Deschelle created
48:32a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for their burial,
48:36and rumors later circulated that she may have launched
48:38as many as four separate fundraisers,
48:40though all have since been deleted.
48:42Following her arrest, 33-year-old Nicole Michelle Johnson
48:46was held without bond
48:47and later indicted on 14 criminal counts.
48:50The charges included two counts each
48:52of first-degree child abuse resulting in death,
48:55first-degree child abuse involving severe physical injury,
48:58second-degree child abuse,
49:00second-degree assault,
49:01neglect of a minor,
49:02failure to report the death of a minor,
49:05and unauthorized disposal of a body.
49:07She ultimately pleaded guilty on August 13, 2024,
49:11to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death.
49:15She was sentenced in February 2025 to life in prison,
49:19with all but 50 years suspended,
49:21as well as an additional five years
49:23of supervised probation upon her eventual release.
