Marcos says China 'misinterpreted' his comments on Taiwan

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Monday, August 11, that Beijing has "misinterpreted" his comments saying Manila will be inevitably drawn into a conflict between China and Taiwan should one erupt.

China accused Marcos of "playing with fire" after the Philippine leader said during a visit to India that "there is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it" due to its proximity to the democratically governed island.

Marcos said Filipinos working and living in Taiwan would have to be evacuated if a conflict does arise but maintained that he wishes to avoid confrontation and war. Over a hundred thousand Filipinos live and work in Taiwan, according to Philippine government data.

China's embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the president's remarks.

00:00We are, I think, for propaganda purposes misinterpreted, but the Philippines is not...
00:13We are constant in our defense of the territory, of the state, of the population, of the Republic of the Philippines.
00:22We do not want any kind of confrontation with anyone. We want to build a better, stronger, freer, safer Philippines.
00:33That's what we are working for. This does not build, this kind of confrontation does not build a stronger, better Philippines.
00:44All it does is continue to defend our country.
00:47That's the... I'm a little bit perplexed why it would be characterized as such, as playing with fire.
00:56If there is a war over Taiwan, we will be drawn, hihilain tayo sa ayat gusto natin.
01:05Kicking and screaming, we will be drawn and dragged into that mess.
01:10Whatever you do, come on, let's be...
01:14Hope, I love this saying, hope is not a plan. I hope it doesn't happen. I hope it doesn't...
01:19But if it does, we have to plan for it already.
