00:00Life in the coldest inhabited place on earth is not easy and even seemingly simple daily task can

00:19take a whole day. Locals dedicate their weekends to doing laundry and washing in their wooden

00:27bathhouse the only option for maintaining personal hygiene in a region without running water.

00:35To get the bathhouse to the right temperature Stanislav and his son must start heating it well

00:40in advance. The bathhouse in Yakutia are heated by wood burning stoves and the temperature inside

00:55the steam room can reach up to 70 degrees or higher. It takes them to five hours and requires a lot of

01:03wood. Because it takes so long the locals will usually shower only once or twice a week.

01:16As the bathhouse slowly heats up Stanislav and Rulustan set out to get the water from the garden

01:22snow making sure to gather enough for both washing and laundry.

01:36Rulustan is 13 years old, the third child in his family and a student at a local middle school.

01:42Despite his young age he has already learned the necessary skills to survive in the extreme climate

01:48and is always there to help his father.

02:09With the water collected and the bathhouse heated, Zinaida, the wife of Stanislav and their 16-year-old

02:15daughter Julia are ready to begin their weekly laundry.

02:32Every Sunday the two of them wash the family's clothes by hand using the snow water that Stanislav

02:37and Rulustan have collected from the garden. With a large family to care for there's a lot of laundry

02:43to get through. Despite the heavy workload, Zinaida and Julia work diligently together to ensure that

02:49the family has clean and fresh clothes for the week ahead.

03:00Meanwhile, Rulustan is helping his father in another important task of heating their home.

03:05The harsh winters in Yakutia require filling up the stove with wood twice or even three times a day

03:11for nine months of the year.

03:19As the heat from the fireplace starts to warm the house,

03:22Julustan hurries to the outdoor toilet, a small shed that covers a pit.

03:29While using an outdoor toilet may seem less convenient, it's actually more hygienic.

03:34The frozen temperatures make it difficult to have working pipes,

03:38which would easily freeze and indoor toilets without sewage would become quite unpleasant.

03:58In the meantime, Zinaida and Julia finished washing their clothes.

04:01They hung the freshly cleaned garments outside in the garden to dry in the freezing winter air.
