00:00On the previous occasions and nocibly the game in 1973,
00:06you're too young to remember that of course Paul,
00:08but it was a European final in Greece,
00:11Leeds lost it by a goal to nil and the referee that gave the all-important penalty in that one
00:15and sent off Norman Hunter was later banned by UEFA for accepting bribes
00:21and it still irks a certain generation of Leeds United supporters.
00:25Yeah, absolutely it does and you can understand why.
00:28I did wonder where you were going with that,
00:30because one of the last games against AC Milan I played and when you said 1973,
00:33I did wonder if that was an early dig coming my way.
00:36But no, there is obviously a history between the two sides,
00:38obviously dating back a long time, two giants of European football in their own right.
00:45And we await the arrival of the two sets of players now,
00:51speaking to players from both teams before the game downstairs,
00:54and I put it to both of them, I spoke to Fakaya Tomori of Milan
00:59and I also spoke to Pascal Stroik of Leeds and I mentioned to both of them,
01:03look it's going to be a sell-out today, near on sell-out, 50,000,
01:06and both of them were a little bit surprised.
01:08Pascal Olovic had been told about the interest here in Ireland over Leeds United,
01:12knew all about the fact that loads of the Yorkshire fans would be over for this one as well,
01:17so he wasn't as surprised, but even so this is a special occasion for the supporters
01:23and certainly for these players as they make their way out onto this splendid surface,
01:28which by the way is only four weeks old, grown from seed,
01:32and they are very proud of the surface here at the Aviva Stadium today.
01:37And listen to that noise, Leeds United all in white, pleased about that,
01:41it never quite seems like it's Leeds unless they're all in white,
01:45and Milan will be playing in their proper kit as well, the red and black stripes,
01:49so that just adds to the sense of occasion in this one.
01:52Dan James back for Leeds today, what a season he had in the Championship last season,
01:58will he be able to make a similar impact in the Premier League this term?
02:02And a new face in their racks, and we'll get to the Teamews in just one second or two.
02:09The latest debutant for Leeds today in goal,
02:18where Lucas Perry makes his first appearance for the club
02:22after his £50 million arrival from Lyon.
02:25That is one of four changes to the side that started the friendly with Villarreal
02:29at Ellen Road a week ago.
02:31Tanaka replaces Longstaff in midfield, Joel Pirro gets the nod over Emetje up front,
02:37and Dan James is back from injury, so Brendan Aronson drops to the bench.
02:43Jadon Bogle still missing with his hip problem.
02:51Well, Milan's big-name signing over the summer, Luka Modric, is not in from the start,
02:56but he will be one of many subs to be brought on as the afternoon wears on.
03:02Three of their summer signings do start, 35-year-old goalkeeper Pietro Tarriciano,
03:08former Brighton man Pervis Estepinian, and Swiss international Ardan Jashari,
03:14who only joined the club from Brugge days ago.
03:17Up front, Noah Okafor has scored four goals already in their pre-season campaign,
03:24including two goals in their 4-2 win over Liverpool.
03:30So, Paul, just tell us what you think about Leeds starting line-up,
03:33and let's go no further than the goalkeeper Lucas Perry, who you can relate to, obviously.
03:37Listen, he's a big sign-in for Leeds United.
03:39I think it was the time where competition needed to be replaced,
03:43and Lucas Perry at 27-year-old, the Brazilian coming in from Lyon,
03:46he's been an excellent piece of recruitment from the Leeds United recruitment team,
03:51and I think when you look at their starting XI,
03:53I don't think this is far off the starting XI that would play against Everton next week.
03:57I think, obviously, Bogle would come in at full-back had he been fit,
04:00we know he's not fit today.
04:01The biggest question was Ayo Tanaka or Longstaff,
04:04and today it's Tanaka that's got the nod ahead of Longstaff.
04:07So, for me, Leeds United have approached it very much
04:09as though it was the opening day of the Premier League.
04:11We will see changes as the game goes on,
04:13but that's probably his strongest starting XI that he's got available to him today.
04:17AC Milan, on the other hand, we know they play Chelsea tomorrow at Stamford Bridge,
04:21they've got two games in 48 hours, they are going to have to rotate,
04:24they've got a 19-year-old in there, a 17-year-old in there, as you say.
04:28Josari coming in, making his debut in the middle of that midfield,
04:31they've left out Liao, they've got some big players that will play tomorrow,
04:34and there certainly will be an element of rotation from AC Milan today.
04:40Three-match huddle for Leeds United, their final pre-season game.
04:46Unbeaten in the four prior to this, winning two and drawing two,
04:50they started off with a 0-0 in Sweden against Manchester United,
04:54a one-all against Valerial last weekend at Elland Road,
04:59and in between two wins over German opposition, SC Berry and SC Paderborn.
05:05And it's Leeds United in the all-whites who get us under way,
05:09attacking the goal away to our left-hand side,
05:13hoping to end their pre-season campaign with a good result,
05:18and perhaps of more importance, a really polished performance as well.
05:25I think that's the thing we're looking for this late on now in pre-season,
05:28it will be the performance level.
05:30As I said there when we saw the teams, this would likely be his starting XI,
05:33if this is what he had available to him next week.
05:36So we may see rotation at half-time after 60 minutes,
05:39but he will be expecting a good, solid performance
05:42from these 11 players on the pitch.
05:45That is Pascal Stoich, entering his seventh season with the club.
05:51Joe Rodham, one of three Welshmen in this league's starting XI,
05:56who have played here before, and here's another of them, Dan James,
05:59scuttling down that far side.
06:02Anything on Pavlovich initially.
06:05Spin away.
06:08Only touch for Teretiano in the Milan goal, a hurried clearance from him.
06:14It's been interesting to watch Leeds pre-season
06:16and how they would approach the Premier League.
06:18Obviously played with four at the back, the two holding midfielders last season,
06:22the three wide play, the three in behind the main striker.
06:25Today it's pretty much given us an indication of what he's looking to do,
06:28Nyonto on the left, Dan James on the right, and Joel Perrault down the middle.
06:31It's still as an attacking formation,
06:33just maybe with one slightly more defensive midfielder in Tanaka in mind
06:37going into the Premier League,
06:38rather than being as open as they were in the Championship.
06:43There's Gudmundsen, the Swedish international.
06:46Lucas Perry looking long for Nyonto, and of course he's an Italian international.
06:56He hasn't played for his country for a couple of years, Willie Nyonto.
07:01He's young player of last season.
07:03I think at this stage last season there was a lot of talk and a lot of doubt
07:08about William Nyonto's future as well, wasn't there?
07:10You got to give Daniel Farke a lot of credit for the way that he handled that situation,
07:14and from a player that seemingly at one point was adamant he was leaving the club,
07:18turned him round and was able to get the performances out of William Nyonto that he did,
07:22when he also wasn't a regular starter towards the end of the season,
07:25yet he still hit the levels expected of him.
07:29The charge up that far side, something we saw a lot of in his time at Brighton and Hove Albion, of course.
07:44Such excitement around Leeds United once again.
07:47Took them two seasons to get out of the Championship,
07:50so close in their first season down at that level,
07:53losing the play-off final to Southampton,
07:55100 points last season though,
07:57and tipping Burnley to the title.
08:00Let's see of a superior goal difference.
08:04Now that challenge comes again of survival in the Premier League,
08:08and so many clubs recently having gone up from the Championship have failed that challenge.
08:13Bursting forward now with Nyonto, fed by Stack.
08:16The Leeds are getting plenty of bodies forward here,
08:18Montau just puts the brakes on slightly before delivering a dangerous crossing,
08:22nodded away by Esther Pignan,
08:23and Skamring across is Okafor to try and maintain possession for Milan.
08:33They do like to take one or two wrists at the back,
08:34we've seen that a couple of occasions already in his opening three or four minutes.
08:39Interesting to see how it looks well how AC Milan would set up.
08:42Allegri coming back in,
08:44he's set the spell in charge,
08:46I mean they've had a chaotic year,
08:47only finishing eighth in Serie A,
08:48going through two Portuguese managers.
08:50Allegri coming in, he's very much a defensive-minded coach,
08:53kind of half-expected them to play with a back five,
08:55as they have done a couple of times in pre-season already,
08:58sometimes out of possession,
09:00now they're even lining up in that shape.
09:02Allegri's certainly a defensive-minded coach,
09:04that's one thing he will look to show,
09:06AC Milan's back five up going into the start of a new season.
09:13Stack for Stoic.
09:21Ooh, a slip there by Schmidt that might just open things up for Milan.
09:26Important intervention by Tanaka.
09:28Toshino takes him on,
09:31but the Japanese internationals stuck to his challenge
09:34and gets a warm round of applause for his efforts.
09:37Such a terrific campaign last season for him,
09:41was included in the Championship Team of the Year of course,
09:44and also I think picked up the Players Player of the Year at Ellyn Road.
09:47Look to come again with a chance to attack that five-side through Okafor,
09:58who forces the first corner of the afternoon.
10:01That's what they'll do when they get in possession,
10:03they see Milan out of possession, they'll sit deep defensively,
10:06they'll retreat into that back five,
10:08but when they are in possession,
10:09they'll have wide players to push forward and get into those areas,
10:11and that's what they'll look to do.
10:12Exposed Leeds United with the pace and power that they've got in the wide areas,
10:16in the wide areas.
10:19So first corner of the game.
10:21Swing in, dealt with easily by Stack.
10:28Some of the youngsters brought into the starting line-up this afternoon by Allegri.
10:37Mr Pignan.
10:38Before, Mines in the middle.
10:43Before making decent progress here, in the end it's Ampadu who is able to make the block.
10:50A quick spin of the ball and then bounce for Esther Pignan, who made a bit of a mess of that.
10:55Road on.
11:11Experience for the Welshman with the Tottenham Hotspur earlier in his career.
11:14There's Isaac Schmidt.
11:26Stacked ball, beautiful into the path of James, just spun away from the Welshman,
11:29and Caricciano is out to pounce.
11:33That's great vision from Stack.
11:35To see glimps of him in pre-season, the move started by Schmidt, played it into Stack.
11:38His immediate thought was to turn the ball around the corner.
11:41He's the one who's trying to join in with Joe Perrault.
11:44He's one of the three midfielders that's the higher up the field.
11:47Good ball into him, instinctive ball in behind.
11:50Just a little bit too much pace on it.
11:52We've seen that already from Anton Stack.
11:54He's the one that joins in with the attacks.
12:01Good Munson.
12:02And Padua.
12:03His father, by the way, was born in Dublin.
12:19So, yeah, Nathan could have played for Ireland.
12:24So, he's got in there first, Nanto on the break is in with a chance in.
12:29Nanto didn't get the elevation required, and it's a comfortable save for Teretiano.
12:35Don't even believe the space that he's afforded there, Wilfred Nianto.
12:39Simple straight ball over the top from Pascal Stroik.
12:42Really well-timed run from Nianto.
12:44Looking to be onside, a bit in tight.
12:46The goalkeeper decides to stay on his line, doesn't close the angle down.
12:49In the end, it's a weak finish from Nianto.
12:52Neither here nor there, tries to lift it over the goalkeeper.
12:55Big imposing frame of the goalkeeper, should do better in that position.
12:58Wilfred Nianto has scored a couple of goals in the pre-season games
13:04Leeds have played already, Willy Nianto.
13:07But there was a certain lack of belief there that the opportunity was opening up for him.
13:16Such a promising situation.
13:19I think that's things that Leeds work on, getting those wide players in.
13:22Salah's put this one through, Jimenez with a chance just slips as he hits it.
13:26And the chance has gone begging.
13:28Well, two players we've seen lose their footing already early in this game.
13:37Gets in between the two Leeds central defenders, he's afforded far too much space.
13:41Stroik goes to ground first.
13:43And then it's Jimenez, loses his footing.
13:46Loses his footing.
13:50Good opportunity.
13:52He's not there, but Perry taking a risk.
13:54He was quickly closed down by Chuck Raisi.
13:56That's one thing with Lucas Perry, that his distribution with his feet may be something
14:04that the goalkeeping coach at Leeds needs to work on with him.
14:07I watched him a lot last season in the Europa League,
14:09seeing him play against Manchester United when he was playing for Lyon.
14:12Very experienced goalkeeper at Sao Paulo, Botafogo, South America in Brazil.
14:17And I think in one-on-one situations he's absolutely outstanding,
14:20but I think his distribution would be something that he has to work on.
14:23James has moved it nicely.
14:24Stack onto Nonto, who held his run to ensure that he was onside.
14:28Three up in white with him.
14:30Stack with a chance to turn and shoot, does, and clicks the top of the bar.
14:42Once again, swift-flowing move from Leeds United.
14:46Willy Neonto acres of space again down this left-hand side,
14:49slightly narrower this side.
14:50Ball comes to stack and he can't believe the amount of space that he's afforded.
14:54The AC Milan defenders sitting off, giving him time and space in the 18-yard box,
14:58getting onto his left foot, and it's a decent strike from the German.
15:04The chances are coming, that's three in the space of what, two, three minutes?
15:07Chances at both ends as well in this pre-season friendly at the Aviv.
15:11Between Leeds United of the Premier League and the famous AC Milan of Serie A.
15:20The club steeped in history, 19 Italian titles,
15:23the third most successful behind Juventus and Inter,
15:28but the most successful Italian club on the European stage
15:32with no fewer than seven European Cups and Champions Leagues for their name.
15:36Space far side now for Estepeña,
15:42the Ecuadorian decides what's ahead of him in red and black.
15:45It's a disappointing delivery, but Rodon should be able to tidy up rather easily there.
15:51Oh, he's done brilliantly. James takes over.
15:55Only Puro a header of him, and his touch was a bit heavy.
16:05Reads the game well there.
16:06Matteo Gabiot, centre-half for AC Milan the captain, regardless of the team shake-up.
16:12Inman Pavlovich, that'll be the two centre-halves, whether it be a two or a three.
16:17That'll be the main basis for Allegri going into this season.
16:20Looking to build on what was a really poor season in Serie A last year.
16:24Start the season early because of their poor campaign with a cup competition
16:28that they wouldn't normally expect to play in.
16:30It was actually their lowest finish in ten years, finishing eight.
16:34They were 19 points behind the Champions Napoli,
16:37six points outside the top five,
16:39and for the first time in a long time, no European football for them next term.
16:46Good crunching here from Schmidt.
16:48Right on the toes of Estepeña.
16:51Very much mirror image of Manchester United, really, that, isn't it?
16:56I mean, the club steeped in such history of European football,
16:59missing out for the first time in such a long time.
17:02Going into a new season with almost a new rebuild.
17:07Talking Manchester United, they're supposed to be interested in Rasmus Hoyland.
17:10We've come back to that in a moment because it's three against three at the other end,
17:13and there's a chance opening up here for Okafor.
17:15Has he taken too long? Yes, he has.
17:21Really good feet, again, on the left-hand side from Okafor.
17:28Far too easy from a Leeds United point of view.
17:30Rodon gets there, but he doesn't get tight.
17:32He's turned inside out.
17:34He wasn't for a poor finish.
17:36Nobody goes to close him down.
17:37You expect the Leeds United defence to be closer and tighter in that situation.
17:44As you mentioned Napoli earlier,
17:46Okafor was on loan there towards the back end of last season.
17:50He's only played a few games as a sub in the league.
17:55He was only a goal for Milan last season.
17:57He was on the opening day of last season against Torino.
18:00So, he's got a few things to prove, and we want to address that opportunity.
18:07We do not have people saying that, yeah, we'll do a lot better this term.
18:11Somehow it's still 0-0 with 13 gone on the clock here,
18:14but it's a very engaging pre-season friendly with chances at both ends.
18:18And here come Leeds again with Dan James, twisting away from Esther Krimiak.
18:23Okafor will send in a low ball that's just too far ahead of Willy Nanto.
18:31Willings charged down, up goes Stack.
18:33With a drop for Ampadu.
18:35With a drop for Ampadu.
18:39Edmundson.
18:40Ampadu.
18:41Shmiknau forward on that far side.
18:46And Ward for the time being.
18:51And Bin.
18:55Nanto.
18:59William Tite again inside, come on!
19:04Tanaka.
19:15Stalic.
19:18Nanto.
19:19It's a good recovery from Moussa.
19:29It's an area that they've looked to work, Leeds United,
19:31with Nanto down this left-hand side.
19:33But to work the flanks,
19:34and that's something that we were going to talk about earlier
19:36when AC Milan got their chance,
19:37about Manu Solem and the importance that he was to Leeds United last year,
19:40and if there's an opportunity to potentially bring him back.
19:43There's 12 goals and 13 assists,
19:44and he played over 40 games in the Championship for Leeds,
19:47and he was such an integral part of what they achieved last year.
19:50To take that out of this team going into the Premier League
19:52obviously gives William Nanto the opportunity to play games,
19:55and he didn't start regularly last year because of Solomon.
19:58Tanaka.
20:01Square is Ampadu.
20:03And his stack started brightly.
20:11Good Munson.
20:12Good Munson.
20:19Good Munson.
20:20Good Munson.
20:21Good Munson.
20:22Good Munson.
20:23Good Munson.
20:24Good Munson.
20:25Good Munson.
20:26Good Munson.
20:27Good Munson.
20:28Good Munson.
20:29Good Munson.
20:30Good Munson.
20:31Good Munson.
20:32Good Munson.
20:33Good Munson.
20:34Good Munson.
20:35Good Munson.
20:36Good Munson.
20:37Good Munson.
20:38Good Munson.
20:39Good Munson.
20:40Good Munson.
20:41Good Munson.
20:42Good Munson.
20:43Good Munson.
20:44Good Munson.
20:45Good Munson.
20:46Good Munson.
20:47Good Munson.
20:48I've got to jump off, I've got to jump off!
20:54James.
21:142-0, on to Stack.
21:18Ball under his feet momentarily, but the one off the ball was excellent from the German.
21:26Good spell of possession, that, for Leeds.
21:28I'm impressed with the way that Leeds have started,
21:30especially the performance so far of Anton Stack coming into that midfield,
21:33playing as the most advanced of the three.
21:35That time getting in advance of Joel Perreault,
21:37showing that he's not afraid to run in behind that last strike,
21:40he'd give himself a goal-scoring opportunity.
21:42He's brought a lot of height to the side,
21:44and he's also bringing an attacking presence as well,
21:46in behind that main striker.
21:56James.
21:57Talon.
21:59Talacca.
22:00And to Schmitz.
22:01in to Schmitz.
22:31Attack, attack!
22:35Padu, stack, and forward to Rowe.
22:39Across comes Master Tinja, who was alert to the threat.
22:43Pavlovich closed down quickly by James,
22:46who's looking to steer it off him.
22:48Still looking to do so.
22:52Number four on the turn.
22:56I think it goes against Leeds United,
22:58and by the end of that had three players over the man in possession.
23:02Good pressing from Leeds as well.
23:03You can see there's a trigger,
23:05there's a point where they all set,
23:07and they're all going to press together,
23:08three Leeds United players around.
23:12Win the ball back, legally according to the referee.
23:15The way that Leeds have started,
23:16I thought we saw a shape there from AC Milan.
23:19They were very sacrificial when they weren't in possession,
23:21sat very deep, a back five, four in front,
23:23and that's credit to Leeds the way they've started this game.
23:26As soon as they've had the possession,
23:28AC Milan sit in that shape and say,
23:29go on then, try and break us down.
23:31I'm not so sure that's something that Leeds will come up against
23:33that much this year in the Premier League.
23:35But again, it shows AC Milan's defensive thoughts.
23:38There's some pressure here, forcing the error from a teenager, Manje,
23:57Italian under-19 international, who played a handful of games last season
24:04for Milan in the first team, but these games were in their reserve side,
24:12which is full of youngsters.
24:14Here comes Okafor, onto Esther Pignan, Jimenez waits in the centre,
24:18but he's flashed across the six-yard box instead.
24:23And Perry didn't need to get a touch on that.
24:26They've had some joy down their own left-hand side, AC Milan down,
24:29Leeds United right, Schmidt again gets caught with a run-up,
24:32Joe Roden doesn't know whether to go or stick, ends up doing neither.
24:35Goalkeeper actually does well because I think he pulls out of trying to put a hand on that.
24:39If he puts a hand on that, he palms it into Jimenez, he taps it into an empty net.
24:43Good piece of work from Lucas Perry, the goalkeeper, simply by pulling his hand away
24:47and allowing that ball to go across his six-yard box.
24:51And is that sometimes the hardest thing to do as a goalkeeper,
24:53not to try and get a touch to him?
24:55Miss it. I was good at that one.
24:57I know you excelled at that one.
24:58That's what the net was there for, to stop me running for the ball.
25:02No, there's certain saves in certain areas that you go into as a goalkeeper,
25:06and you think you can see out the corner of your eye.
25:08If you're going to make a save, you're going to make a save and push it into your box.
25:11If your spatial awareness is good and you know where you are,
25:15you leave it and allow it to run dead and the ball goes out.
25:18Because by making half a save or putting half a hand on it,
25:20you're causing yourself more problems.
25:23Manu feeding Moussa, the American.
25:29Moussa hasn't stopped him.
25:32Manu...
25:33Manu...
25:34Manu...
25:36Manu...
25:40Manu...
25:42Manu...
25:43Manu...
25:44Jibberurb...
25:45He's caught the eye.
25:46Manu...
25:47Manu...
25:48France...
25:49£1.000 signing from Hoffenheim, played in the Europa League last season against Spurs.
25:55Is that one of the games that you've covered?
25:58I did the same play last year, really good forward-thinking player.
26:02Like I said, I think the thing from Legion 19, the recruitment this season,
26:05has gone more moneyball style, if you like, looking at stats, looking at figures,
26:09statistics of players in other leagues that may not necessarily stack up in the Premier League,
26:14but actually the eye test on Anton Stack thus far have been very, very impressed with him.
26:20Moussa for Ballad, Mani, Nsala, they don't understand the team at just 17 years of age, Pavlovich.
26:42He's gone for the return, and Pagou had to get that right and did.
26:45And did.
26:48Mika Modric amongst the many, many Milan subs today, and we are told that he will get on at some stage.
26:56Of course, they've got another game tomorrow, have you ever heard of that?
26:58Two friendlies in two days?
27:00It's a quick turnaround, isn't it?
27:03I think you can see that, no disrespect to anybody, but it's a very much changed AC Milan side.
27:09It's not a strong side today and a weak side tomorrow, it's very much a mixed side today and a mixed side tomorrow, isn't it?
27:15There's a couple of big names playing today and there's a couple of big names that are obviously going to play tomorrow.
27:18There's a chance on the counter-attack here for Leeds United, if they can use it wisely.
27:23Mika forced a little wider than maybe he wanted to.
27:27He's got Nonto in support, Milan have got many, many bodies back now, in fact they've got everybody back behind the ball.
27:32That's exactly what I was talking about, you see how deep they are now.
27:34You look at the striker there, Jimenez, he's the most advanced player and he's still in their own defensive third.
27:39That's something that the new managers worked with them in this short space of pre-season.
27:42All 11 players there crammed in their own defensive third.
27:45As soon as they lose the ball, retreat to shape and say, go on then, break us down.
27:51Samogliano Allegri brought in in May for his second spell in charge of Milan.
27:56In his first spell, he won his tag in his first season, that was back in 2010-11.
28:02Five titles since then, that he's won at Juventus before being sacked at the end of the season, before last.
28:14Schmidt.
28:19And Perdue.
28:23Trying to stretch to get his head to that, the biggest of the champs, of course, for the one-two.
28:32All starts in urs for Leeds, of course, a week on Monday night.
28:38Everton at Elland Road.
28:41And Arsenal away.
28:43Before Newcastle.
28:46Come to Yorkshire.
28:49Some easiest of starts for the Premier League new boys.
28:52Montau working the one-two.
28:54But a couple of cannons and it's a simple catch for Ferracciana.
28:59It's a tough start for Leeds when you look at it on paper, isn't it?
29:01But I think when you get to the Premier League level, you spoke earlier, you touched about the last two seasons.
29:06The three promoted teams came straight back down again.
29:08I think none more so than last year was that more evident.
29:11How difficult it is to break in.
29:13Leicester City were the best of the rest and they had 25 points.
29:16Tottenham, who won't finish down there again this year, they had 38 points.
29:20So there's a 13-point difference between the bottom three and actually being in the Premier League.
29:24And it was done with, what, four games to go this season, wasn't it?
29:27Yeah, I think that part of the season was, that part of the Premier League was resolved much earlier than four games to go
29:34because they were so far adrift and playing so, so badly.
29:36That bottom three looked as though they were going down by January, February.
29:40I saw Leicester quite a lot that season and they were dreadful.
29:43And they were the least worse of the three that went down.
29:45And then when you look at the league, I mean, to break out the bottom three,
29:49the ceiling above that bottom three was Tottenham, Wolves, Manchester United, West Ham, Everton.
29:52And that's the ceiling you've got to break through to get into this league.
29:55Now, I don't for one minute think that Manchester United and Tottenham will be down there again this season.
29:59They'll be looking at the likes of maybe Brentford or Wolves.
30:02Maybe that could be the low-hanging fruit that you're trying to pick off.
30:05But the point I'm making is it's getting ever so harder to break into that Premier League elite, what, 17?
30:10That's the Pinyan.
30:14Can he nudge that on?
30:15Well, he tried to do so.
30:16And in doing so, he was just clipped.
30:18It will be a free kick.
30:19And they want to take it quickly because there's a lot of space far side for Okafor.
30:23But they need to have a man down.
30:25And it's as though we're going to need some treatment here before we can continue.
30:30I was mentioning earlier about Manchester United and Milan in the same question.
30:35We're talking about Milan not being in Europe this season.
30:37Manchester United, Ditto as well.
30:40And it just made me think about Rasmus Hoyland, who's been strongly linked with a move to Milan.
30:45Obviously scored a lot of goals in that league with Atalanta not that long ago.
30:49Had a miserable campaign last year.
30:50Do you think that he's got the tools to be a force with Milan?
30:55Listen, I think he's a player.
30:56I think there is a player in there.
30:57I think he's still very, very young.
30:59It was a difficult time for him last year because he was playing in the Manchester United side
31:02who were constantly under scrutiny.
31:04In Europe, I've covered them a lot, watched them in the final.
31:06And I thought the way their style, the manager's wedded to his style.
31:09And he's not going to go away from that.
31:11And that didn't suit Hoyland.
31:12And then when the goals dried up for him, he went through that spell without scoring.
31:15The weight of the jersey became too heavy for him.
31:18And I think we may go somewhere else, get a new lease of life.
31:20And I do think there's a quality striker in there.
31:22But I think he found it very difficult at Manchester United for many reasons.
31:26At AC Milan, does that apply?
31:28It potentially does.
31:29I think with Sesco going into Manchester United, their recruitment in the final third has been excellent.
31:33You know, Cunha, Sesco, you look at Bruno Fernandes in that number 10 role,
31:38Brian and Mbuemo.
31:39Defensively, you'd like to think from their point of view they're going to recruit again.
31:42But I think Hoyland will potentially be the next one out the door, yes.
31:47Back and away.
31:48Pascal Straub having that treatment.
31:50That is okay to carry on.
31:51It's interesting today that even though they've got loads of subs on their bench,
32:04there's no place this afternoon for Rafael Gau and Christian Pulisic,
32:09looking forward to seeing those two, but they're not involved.
32:13Great pitches here as Region United take over this part of Dublin.
32:17I think that probably happened at some point mid-morning yesterday, didn't it?
32:26But I have to stress that you were not involved in that takeover, were you?
32:29Absolutely not, no.
32:30I think that strategically flew out of a different airport other than Leeds
32:33and arrived very late.
32:36Smith has carried it well.
32:37James, who's flashed sporadically.
32:40That's a dangerous ball in, but almost caught Pavlovich out.
32:42Nanto will keep it in, he's done well, applauded by Gudmundsson for that hard work.
32:56So much of football is about partnerships, isn't it?
32:58And if Gudmundsson, Nanto can strike up a decent relationship down this left-hand side,
33:02that could be so, so useful.
33:04I think it's going to be a really clever sign on Gudmundsson.
33:06I think obviously Junior Pertal had a really good season last year in the Championship,
33:09but he did the previous season to the Premier League in the Champions League,
33:12and I think he got found out defensively in the Premier League.
33:16No foul for that challenge on James,
33:17and Okafor can carry it forward here from Elan.
33:21It's a ball in the shape of what, Asshari.
33:25You won't know too much about these new teammates,
33:26having been signed about 48 hours ago from Klubbrugge.
33:32Good player, isn't he?
33:33He's going to be some player.
33:35I think he's Belgian player of the season last year.
33:36Okafor's cross, well-headed by Gudmundsson because he's got threats behind him.
33:44Giacomozzi was trying to get in there.
33:46Stapp nicely composed as he finds Perry who can look towards halfway.
33:51Pavlovich lost the flag of that, James putting pressure on Oster-Pinyan.
33:57I think what they've paid for Ardo and Asshari in today's market,
34:02it's an extremely good deal for AC Milan, I really do.
34:05It's going back to the last time Leeds United were in the top five pool,
34:18they had a great start, they took seven points from their first three games,
34:21and the final victory in that middle of the session was 3-0 over Chelsea.
34:25There were real high hopes about how the team might fare in the Premier League,
34:29and they just went disastrously wrong, didn't they?
34:31It's difficult.
34:32I think a losing room is a lot harder to get out of than a winning room
34:35when confidence is a factor, and when you're in that relegation,
34:38listen, I've been relegated from the Premier League twice, been promoted to it once,
34:42when you are in that relegation zone, you're constantly looking at other people's results,
34:46and it's as much of a mind game as anything else.
34:48Very, very difficult to concentrate on your own performance and focus solely on that,
34:53and the pressure does mount, but one big weapon that Leeds United have got going into the Premier League
34:57is Ellen Road.
34:58It's an absolute fortress, and it will be again this season.
35:01Regardless of what league Leeds United are in,
35:03that place is packed to the rafters on the first game of every season,
35:06whether that be Leeds 1, 2, wherever it is,
35:08but in the Premier League it will be full every week.
35:10Locker 4.
35:12Mr Pignan lets it run, and the chance is there, and it's buried by Jimenez.
35:19AC Milan take the lead.
35:2230 minutes on the clock.
35:27And Leeds fell to deal with the ball in from the left-hand side,
35:32and Jimenez had found space and was not going to miss that chance.
35:36Perry beaten for the first time in goal for Leeds United.
35:39It's Leeds United 0-0, AC Milan 1.
35:44Good finish at the end when it comes to Jimenez,
35:46but the worrying thing for Leeds United.
35:48Once again, it's come from AC Milan's left, Leeds United's right.
35:51Schmidt this time doesn't get tight enough,
35:52Rodon caught in no-man's land.
35:54It's a simple ball across the tiniest of touches at the near post.
35:58Deflects the ball into Jimenez's path.
36:01Simplest of tasks.
36:02Tucks it away really nicely.
36:04Defensively.
36:06You can analyse that from a Leeds United point of view.
36:08They've got the bodies back.
36:10Haven't picked up.
36:11Haven't defended in the right areas.
36:13And again, it's come from that left-hand side.
36:16Mooted celebrations amongst those Milan supporters.
36:28Not quite surprised, given the fact they're heavily outnumbered.
36:31Is that the away section?
36:33It does feel a little bit like that, doesn't it?
36:35Santiago Jimenez, the Mexican, with the goal then.
36:43He joined the club in February.
36:49A few goals in limited appearances,
36:52including one against his former team final in the Champions League.
36:55It's a foul on Gudmundsson here.
36:57And Monson is eager to keep it taken quickly.
37:02Have a chance to take it again, obviously.
37:08He's strong, Gudmundsson.
37:10Like I say, I think he'll be a good addition.
37:11Very good experience with Lille.
37:13Played a good fee for him.
37:1426-year-old Swedish international.
37:16I think he'll be a real asset to Leeds in the Premier League.
37:18Like I said about Junior Firpo.
37:20Played extremely well last year, give him his credit.
37:22I think in the Premier League he got exposed.
37:24He was culpable, he was at fault for a lot of goals.
37:26And the teams seemed to target Leeds down that left-hand side.
37:29But when he was in the Championship,
37:30it was almost like that was his ceiling.
37:32And Leeds have realised that he's moved on.
37:34And in Gudmundsson, I think they've got an excellent recruit.
37:37Four years at Lille before he's moved to England
37:41and the Champions League experience last season.
37:45And he's involved in that win over Real Madrid.
37:51So he's got some pedigree.
37:53Regular in the Sweden team now.
37:56Dad used to play in the Premier League, didn't he, as well,
37:57with Blackburn Rovers.
38:01He's for Shaari for Milan.
38:06With characteristically effective backtracking
38:10and then persistence.
38:11It's frustrating that from a player's point of view
38:19and a fan's point of view.
38:21And the two players are tussling for the ball
38:22and one of them stops, almost referee in the game himself.
38:25Stops, throws his arms up in the air, looks at the referee.
38:27Almost says to the referee, blow the whistle.
38:29And the referee at that point hadn't blown the whistle.
38:31Shaquese with this free kick.
38:38It was his cross that ultimately led to the goal.
38:40And it was that little flicker across the six-yard box that helped.
38:50Deep delivery.
38:51That's helped on its way by Rodon.
38:53He was way behind a week ago against Villarreal
38:59and came back to level matters in the second half.
39:04Something they'll need to emulate today.
39:08They're not to pick up their first defeat of their pre-season campaign.
39:12What a speechable move, that is to bring him.
39:26Not a space again on that.
39:28Left hand side, that should be the keepers.
39:34A good throw out looking for Wento.
39:35Oh, brilliant work from him, and Stack looking to help it on swiftly for Pirro.
39:43Out comes Ferriciano again.
39:48It's definitely a work in progress, isn't it, Nyonto and Stack, Pirro,
39:51the understanding that's already building between those three in this game.
39:54Good piece of goalkeeper from Lucas Perry, manned his box,
39:57that's something that Leeds have missed in recent months at the end of last season.
40:00Good distribution, again, it's Stack who's the one that's got the forward thinking
40:04to get in and support William Nyonto.
40:12And Pirro, Pirro.
40:14Taraka, James' burst from the right into the middle.
40:19There's four options to that right-hand side, Schmidt had it briefly.
40:24Now I'm Pirro.
40:26Just close the space, didn't he, Jan-James?
40:28I mean, we can see here from our high, elevated position in this fantastic arena,
40:33we've got a great view of the pitch, it's almost like a Sabutio pitch from up here.
40:36You can see the run that Dan James made, he just cut all the options off.
40:49Oh, Stack going at the end.
40:51That's it.
41:00Schmidt.
41:01That's it.
41:02Thank you, bud.
41:03It's a big deal.
41:04And it's not...
41:05It's a big deal.
41:06Sorry.
41:07And it's an excuse.
41:08That's it.
41:09James.
41:10Military.
41:11That's it.
41:12That's it.
41:13That's it.
41:14That's it.
41:15That's it.
41:16That's it.
41:18Not a kind.
41:19That's it.
41:21And Monson.
41:23Lovely ball, Jontzo, in the way, Salah.
41:33Excellent play again from Leeds United down on this near-touch line.
41:37Interchange between Gudmundsson and Willignonto.
41:40Very tight, very close, intricate play, good one-two.
41:44Decent block in the end from Salah, with Leeds United the corner.
41:53Oh!
41:59They've like two players up the pitch here,
42:01so that's forced Nonto and Schmidt to come back.
42:04In goes the kick, punched away by Tanatiano.
42:09Rich Okafor, how can they use this wisely on the Italian side?
42:13It's through the middle of the goalscorer Jimenez, on to Chukwesi.
42:18He's back-paddling, they beat Nonto.
42:21First time, and that's second time.
42:26Good defender from Jontzo.
42:28Show his attributes and his skill in the opposition third.
42:31There it shows what Daniel Farke asked of him in the defensive third.
42:34Got to put a shift in if you're playing in the wide positions.
42:36.
42:43.
42:45.
42:46.
42:49.
42:51.
42:55.
42:57.
42:59.
43:06.
43:08.
43:10.
43:11.
43:12.
43:13.
43:14.
43:15.
43:28.
43:29.
43:30.
43:31.
43:32.
43:34.
43:49.
43:50.
43:51.
44:08.
44:09.
44:10.
44:25.
44:26.
44:27.
44:44.
44:45.
44:46.
44:47.
44:48.
44:51.
44:52.
44:53.
44:55.
44:56.
44:57.
44:58.
44:59.
45:00.
45:01what I've seen to him, he's got that side to him as well.
45:03Talked about his creativeness and Ford running in the final third,
45:06but also he's not afraid to put his foot in to make a challenge.
45:09There's a sturdiness, a resilience about him.
45:15Some strength in the midfield now, haven't they, in those roles,
45:17with Sean Longstaff having signed, we'll see him in the second half,
45:20and Bilir Gruev, the Bulgarian, who had a decent campaign last term as well.
45:26Absolutely, I think they've recruited well, they've recruited solidly.
45:29I think obviously before now, at the end of the window,
45:31Daniel Fark spoke quite openly about he wanting an attacker or two.
45:36It was a message to the fans, but it was a message to those above him
45:40that he needs that player in before the window closes.
45:43But actually the strength that they've got in midfield, Tanaka, Ampadu, Gruev,
45:46Longstaff, Stack, Nyonto, Aronson as well, he's still at the club,
45:50he's another one, a bit like Firpo that the Premiership passed him by.
45:54He continues to struggle down that far side, he's missed the flight of that.
46:03Looking for, unable to capitalise to the maximum.
46:10Didn't start a single game in the Championship last term, Isaac Schmidt.
46:14I think it'll be used as a sub, but there's only starts coming in the FA Cup.
46:20Here come Leeds again with that man stacked through the middle.
46:23It takes over.
46:28Nyomontso, it's a good tackle.
46:30It stopped him in his tracks by Vashari.
46:32And Chakwezi takes over for Milan, looking to increase their advantage.
46:37Moussa, brilliantly done.
46:43Trying the task that was needed.
