00:25Terror in Midtown.
00:27The Citizen Reporters.
00:30On the scene.
00:31There's an active shooter right now.
00:32The killer's determined stride inside the skyscraper.
00:37The building even has its own zip code.
00:40The furniture barricade.
00:42Someone closed the door.
00:43We're going to pile these chairs up behind the door.
00:45The shooters claim that playing high school football caused brain damage.
00:50And his cross-country descent to death.
00:53What he wrote in the note found in his pocket.
00:56This was definitely a suicide mission.
00:58Then, brother's overboard.
01:01First, his brother falls overboard.
01:04Then, he wipes out.
01:06The runaway boat.
01:08No, no, no, no, no, Ed.
01:10Sydney Sweeney backlash.
01:13Sydney Sweeney has bird jeans.
01:15The big debate over her steamy new jeans ad campaign.
01:18I literally can't imagine being so stupid.
01:21What I thought that that meant was, well, she was wearing some great jeans.
01:24Plus, how roasting s'mores ended in total disaster.
01:28It felt like I was just being struck with needles.
01:31How something like this could go so wrong.
01:35And knuckleheads at the gate.
01:38We're here to rescue the aliens.
01:40They said they were going to storm Area 51.
01:44So, what happened when they tried to invade the super-secret military base?
01:49The joke that got massively out of hand.
01:53Now, Inside Edition.
01:56Hello, thanks for joining us.
01:58I'm Mary Calvey.
01:59Nerves are still raw here in Manhattan after yesterday's shooting in Midtown that sent workers of a huge office building running for their lives.
02:07Today, we are learning more about what happened, as well as new information about the gunman who caused all the terror.
02:13Les Trent begins our coverage.
02:18Terrifying scenes in Midtown Manhattan as office workers run for their lives, hands in the air.
02:24And you can see the fear etched on their faces.
02:27In an instant, this young woman turned into a citizen reporter, breaking the news on social media.
02:33There's an active shooter right now on 54th and Park over here.
02:37The streets are all blocked off.
02:39Level 3 mobilization from active shooter, 345 Park Avenue.
02:43The 44-story building is the headquarters of the NFL.
02:47The shocking surveillance image shows the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamora,
02:52brazenly marching across a plaza to the skyscraper at 6.28 p.m.
02:58An M4 assault rifle at his side.
03:01Security camera footage shows the shooter enter the lobby, turn right, and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer.
03:09He then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire.
03:17The slain NYPD officer is Dideril Islam, a 36-year-old father of two, whose wife is expecting their third child next month.
03:27The woman shot down is 42-year-old Wesley Lepatner, an executive with the investment giant Blackstone.
03:34Another security guard was shot dead behind his desk.
03:38Incredibly, the gunman allowed a woman who was exiting the elevator to walk away unharmed.
03:44Police believe he was looking for the NFL headquarters in the building, but get this, he went to the wrong elevator bank.
03:50He ended up on the 33rd floor where he claimed another victim, 27-year-old Julia Hyman.
03:56Then, he turned the gun on himself.
03:59Dozens of office workers barricaded themselves inside their offices.
04:03These guys made a fortress of sofas.
04:06A smart move, says security consultant Bill Stanton.
04:10It's about reaction time and action.
04:12Call 911.
04:13Grab that fire extinguisher.
04:15Someone close the door.
04:16We're going to pile these chairs up behind the door.
04:19You're going to take that fire extinguisher and bash him in the head if God forbid he comes in.
04:23We have lifted the sheltered in place.
04:27There were chilling scenes.
04:29Cops carried a man wounded in the shooting spree and frantically performed CPR.
04:34I've been around a long time.
04:36I can't remember anything like this happening in New York City in the middle of Manhattan.
04:43Police found the Gumman's BMW.
04:45He had double parked.
04:46And in his pocket, they found a rambling three-page suicide note, which says in part,
04:52Please study brain for CTE.
04:55I'm sorry.
04:56CTE is a brain injury.
04:58In a heart-wrenching moment, Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch
05:03watched as the flag-draped body of the slain cop was escorted out of the hospital by an honor guard.
05:09His father reportedly suffered a stroke on hearing the news that his only son was dead.
05:18When the identity of the shooter was revealed, those who knew him were shocked.
05:23As a young man, he had shown so much promise as a standout high school football player.
05:27So how did he end up on a cross-country road trip from Las Vegas to New York, armed with an assault weapon?
05:35Jim Murray is in Las Vegas with more on that.
05:38Hey, we're here with standout running back Shane Tamura.
05:40The future looked bright for Shane Tamura, a star on his high school football team in the Los Angeles suburb of Granada Hills.
05:47His highlight reel is filled with touchdowns and big-time plays.
05:51One thing led to another, and I scored.
05:52In this post-game interview from 2016, he smiles brightly as he celebrates a win.
05:58A classmate describes him as cheerful.
06:00You never would have thought violence was something you'd associate with him.
06:04Everything he said was a joke.
06:06After high school, Tamura moved to Las Vegas.
06:08He became a licensed private investigator and was granted a concealed weapon permit.
06:13He worked in the surveillance room at the Horseshoe Casino, but he also struggled.
06:17According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history.
06:24In a rambling three-page suicide note found in his pocket, Tamura claimed he suffered from CTE brain damage associated with football players who sustained repeated concussions.
06:34Please study brain for CTE, he wrote.
06:36The league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits.
06:41They failed us.
06:42Is his story plausible?
06:44Could he have developed CTE from high school football?
06:46Dr. Kristen Willemure, author of Biohack Your Brain, is an expert on CTE.
06:52I would also like to say that it is not necessarily common.
06:56We typically see the symptoms of CTE really start to happen in athletes who are playing more at the collegiate and professional levels.
07:05We may never know what finally sent Tamura over the edge.
07:08What we do know is that on Saturday, he climbed into his BMW and left his home here in this gated Las Vegas community about 20 minutes off of the strip.
07:17What followed was a three-day drive to New York City.
07:19Mr. Tamura's vehicle traveled cross-country through Colorado on July 26th, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27th, and then in Columbia, New Jersey as recently as 4.24 p.m. today.
07:36The vehicle entered New York City shortly thereafter.
07:39Without stopping for a break, he double-parked his BMW on 52nd Street.
07:44Then he drove across the plaza at 345 Park Avenue and opened fire inside the lobby.
07:50He is not worried about getting caught.
07:53He's not worried about anything.
07:55He's striding up with a gun in plain view.
07:58He makes no effort to conceal it or to hide it.
08:00This is a guy who went into that building knowing, intending to kill someone, and probably knowing he was not going to come out alive.
08:09Along with a loaded handgun, authorities also found the antidepressant Zoloft and marijuana in the gunman's car.
08:17They were two brothers out wakeboarding when the brother who was driving ended up falling in the water, leaving no one on board.
08:24So how were they going to stop the runaway boat?
08:27They spoke with Stephen Fabian.
08:28A beautiful summer afternoon on the water turned into a nightmare for two brothers.
08:3415-year-old Duke Brimhall is wakeboarding as his big brother, Bo, leaves the wheel to hand him a soda, but slips.
08:42Yep, 21-year-old Bo fell into Flathead Lake in Montana.
08:46It's now a runaway boat pulling Duke.
08:49My first thought was like, holy cow, that's crazy, so I got to get on the boat and stop it.
08:54As Duke tries to pull himself into the boat, a wave hits and he falls in.
08:59So now what? You guys are in the water and the boat's just motoring away from you?
09:02We thought we were dead in the water. Like, if the boat crashes, we're going to be in big trouble by our parents.
09:08Both brothers watched helplessly as their motorboat powered on with nobody at the wheel.
09:14They were left to fend for themselves in open water.
09:17But as luck would have it, two jet skiers saw everything and came to the rescue.
09:22Look closely. You can see the heroes racing into action.
09:25Hey, I think those kids just fell out of the boat.
09:28They were just on jet skis filming and we were just yelling for help and they just came on over and I jumped on.
09:35Duke climbs onto the jet ski, desperate to get back to the runaway boat.
09:39Is there no one on the boat?
09:41What were you doing?
09:43I was trying to hand him a soda and it fell off.
09:45With music blasting in the background, Duke brings the boat to a stop.
09:49Phew, that was close.
09:51And there's one important thing left on Big Brother's mind just before he's rescued.
09:57Well, don't tell my dad, please.
09:59Well, there was no keeping. This is a secret.
10:01Dad found out and gave them an ultimatum.
10:03They are no longer allowed to use his boat unless he's on board with them.
10:08We told you about those sexy new Sydney Sweeney jeans ads touting the actress having great jeans.
10:14Well, now there's backlash to the campaign.
10:16Megan Alexander tells us what it's all about.
10:19They make your butt look amazing.
10:22Sydney Sweeney's new jeans campaign is sparking major backlash.
10:27Jeans are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like her color, personality, and even eye color.
10:34My jeans are blue.
10:38The campaign has a clever slogan.
10:40Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.
10:42That's jeans with a J.
10:44But many believe the implication is that Sydney Sweeney's jeans with a G are superior.
10:50My body's composition is determined by my jeans.
10:53Hey, I was up here.
10:57It's a problem when white people try to say that the superior jean is blonde hair and blue eyes.
11:03I have never seen something so clearly cut as white supremacy in my life.
11:07Others are praising the campaign.
11:09I'm not going to stop you.
11:11It's wrong to say she has good jeans.
11:13Have you seen what Sydney Sweeney looks like?
11:16What I thought that that meant was, well, she was wearing some great jeans.
11:19I guess I'm really naive.
11:21I'm not here to tell you to buy American Eagle jeans.
11:24So, will the controversy help or hurt American Eagle?
11:28Listen, you hear that all press is good press.
11:30Certainly, it created more awareness.
11:32If there was anyone out there who didn't know what American Eagle was, that they sell jeans, that it is a brand that's still in existence, now they certainly know.
11:40I bet you want to try these jeans.
11:42Just 24 hours after the campaign's launch, American Eagle's stock price surged by 10%.
11:48This woman was burnt so severely, doctors had to wrap her in bandages like a mummy to treat her wound.
11:56So, what happened?
11:57Like so many Americans this time of year, she was outside roasting s'mores when things went horribly wrong.
12:03She spoke with Amber Cogliano.
12:05It's a cozy way to light up your backyard.
12:08Tabletop fire pits are growing in popularity.
12:12They're smokeless and easy to use.
12:14But experts say, if you're not careful, this can happen, as seen in this demonstration.
12:22Just watch as this elderly man relaxes on his patio.
12:25Suddenly, his fire pit, which is fueled by rubbing alcohol, explodes.
12:31A shower of flames rains down on him.
12:33Now, it's happened again.
12:37It felt like I was just being struck with needles.
12:40Vianna Dale became engulfed in flames when she says her tabletop fire pit exploded while she was cooking s'mores in a family member's backyard in Mission, California.
12:51We couldn't see that there was still a small flame and it needed to be refilled.
12:56One of my family members poured the rubbing alcohol into the fire and because the concrete was already hot, it ignited and it fire jetted back at me.
13:04Her friend dragged her into the swimming pool to put out the flames.
13:08My whole arm was on fire along with this one, the top part, and then my wrist, and then my face and my hair.
13:16This is how she looked in the hospital.
13:18Her entire head, arms and hands wrapped in bandages like a mummy.
13:22Despite the excruciating pain, she tried to keep her spirits up.
13:28Now, her bandages are off.
13:30Do you feel different now?
13:31I'm learning how to accept what I look like.
13:33Vianna is just the latest victim of something called flame jetting, a phenomenon that occurs when fuel-like rubbing alcohol is added to a fire that's not totally extinguished.
13:43What happened to me is so preventable.
13:45This is 100% preventable and it never needs to happen to anybody.
13:48Fire officials stress it's critical to be extra careful.
13:53You make sure to snuff out any flame in your fire pit before refueling because even just a spark could lead to disaster.
14:01Next, knuckleheads at the gate.
14:04We're here to rescue the aliens!
14:06They said they were going to storm Area 51.
14:09So, what happened when they tried to invade the super-secret military base?
14:16The joke that got massively out of hand.
14:19Plus, for whom the bell tolls.
14:24Tribute to the wrestling legend.

16:32It's the Air Force Base where conspiracy theorists believe UFOs are hidden.
16:39So what happened when millions planned to storm Area 51?
16:43It's the joke that got way out of control.
16:46It started with this guy, Matty Roberts, who came up with the crazy idea of invading Area 51.
16:52The legendary and mysterious military base in the Nevada desert, forever associated with aliens and UFOs.
17:01How do you get funding for something like this?
17:03In 2019, as a goof, Roberts launched a Facebook page, Storm Area 51.
17:09They can't stop all of us.
17:11Let's see them aliens.
17:12It was hailed as the great Area 51 showdown, a search for the truth and those aliens from outer space.
17:20They're here to arrest you, the aliens!
17:23Much to Matty Roberts' amazement, the idea of storming Area 51 went viral.
17:28Can you believe three million people signed up for the so-called invasion?
17:33The Air Force took it so seriously, they warned they would protect the base from intruders.
17:38The FBI also announced it was monitoring the events.
17:42I want to do something cool out there now that we have a bunch of people, but I don't want anybody to get hurt.
17:46Derek Formaster is sheriff of Lincoln County.
17:49We didn't know if it was going to be thousands or a million or what, and so we had to expect the worst.
17:55Matty Roberts and the phenomenon he sparked are now featured in the new Netflix documentary, Trainwreck, Storm Area 51.
18:04We're storming Area 51, and we're going to find some aliens!
18:07I had no idea what I'd started.
18:09How big did this get?
18:10That's what I loved about this story, is it starts super small, it's just a kid in his basement.
18:14Within six weeks, this went completely out of control.
18:18The plan was to run Naruto-style, supposedly faster than bullets.
18:22Naruto is a reference to a Japanese cartoon show and its arms-backwards style of running.
18:28In the end, this was the lame turnout that actually showed up to storm the base.
18:33Not exactly the human wave of three million people that had been anticipated.
18:38It's a really amazing story of how, if something's silly enough and it captures the imagination, it can go wild like this.
18:44The two-bar documentary, Trainwreck, Storm Area 51, is streaming now on Netflix.
18:52Coming up, wrestling legend Hulk Hogan is honored with a ten-bell salute.
