En 1969, l'acteur de télévision Rick Dalton et son ami et doublure, le cascadeur Cliff Booth, sont totalement perdus dans une industrie du cinéma en pleine mutation. Ils ne comprennent plus cette Cité des anges qui voit l'émergence du mouvement hippie et l'arrivée cauchemardesque du gourou Charles Manson. Tout en croisant Steve McQueen et Bruce Lee, Dalton et Booth se noient dans la bière et les verres de whisky, et peinent à trouver des contrats. Non loin de la propriété de Rick Dalton, la jeune actrice Sharon Tate, femme du réalisateur Roman Polanski, vient de partager l'affiche avec Dean Martin dans une comédie intitulée "Matt Helm règle son comte"...

00:12So Rick, explain to the audience exactly what it is a stunt double does.

00:16Actors are required to do a lot of dangerous stuff.

00:22Cliff here is meant to help carry the load.

00:24Is that how you describe your job, Cliff?

00:27What, carrying his load?

00:29Yeah, that's about right.

00:47My hands are registered as lethal weapons.

00:50We get into a fight, I accidentally kill you, I go to jail.

00:55Anybody accidentally kills anybody in a fight, they go to jail.
