Solomon Islands Blocks Taiwan From Attending Annual Pacific Event

The Solomon Islands has decided not to invite Taiwan to attend this year's Pacific Islands Forum in September, a move believed to be due to pressure from China. Taiwan had been attending the annual event as a development partner since 1993.

00:07That decision was announced by the Solomon Islands, the host of the forum, in September.

00:12It also said that other donor countries, including the U.S. and China, would be excluded as well.

00:18The Solomon switched diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China in 2019.

00:22Taiwan's foreign ministry says it had been attending the forum since 1993

00:26and urged it to keep its existing mechanisms.
