00:00China's foreign minister Wang Yi laid out seven pieces of evidence that, in his words,
00:05lock in China's territorial claim to Taiwan.
00:08But Taiwan's foreign ministry disagrees.
00:19What is the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and how does it affect Taiwan?
00:23The bilateral agreement ended the Japanese empire and the allied occupation of it
00:27after Japan surrendered in World War II.
00:3048 nations signed the peace treaty on September 8th, 1951.
00:35But two parties were noticeably absent, the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name, and the People's Republic of China.
00:42The peace treaty reads, Japan renounces all right, title, and claim to Formosa and the Pescadores, referring to Taiwan and the Popo Islands.
00:52So Japan gave up Taiwan, which at the time of the war was a part of the Japanese empire,
00:57but it never specified as to whom they gave it up to.
01:00Two documents Wang Yi also listed were the Potsdam Proclamation and the Cairo Declaration.
01:05But as one expert notes, these weren't formal international conventions, so they weren't legally binding.
01:11And these two declarations are just a communique.
01:15They are not an international convention.
01:18But the one document that is missing from Wang's statement is the San Francisco Peace Treaty,
01:23because China claims it to be invalid and illegal.
01:27Taiwan's foreign ministry reiterated that the peace treaty replaces Potsdam and Cairo,
01:32in Cairo, because it is, after all, a legal document and not a political declaration.
