00:00Now, back to Stiney and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:05All righty, it is crossover time.
00:08Matt Steinmetz along with Evan Giddings.
00:11We are at Laughing Monk Brewing in Sunnyvale.
00:14We've had a great day.
00:15We've had two shows here.
00:17The morning show is here till 10.
00:18We're here till 2.
00:20And now we head back to the studio for the crossover with Dan Dibley and Mark Willard.
00:24Gentlemen, how's it going?
00:27Hi, boys.
00:28Yeah, what's up, guys?
00:29How's Laughing Monk?
00:30It's great.
00:31What do you got there, Willie?
00:32Oh, this is a cucumber new vodka.
00:36Nice.
00:36Yeah, well, it's Thursday, and I'm in the mood, so I might drink it on the show.
00:40It's already half gone, guys.
00:42Well, Evan got a little bit of an introduction about five minutes ago to the power of the goo,
00:50and that is we have listeners coming down here.
00:53We're just joined by Charles, long-time listeners, never called in,
00:57looked over at the table, assessed, and said, oh, I really wanted to meet Goober.
01:04Oh, man.
01:06Now, I'm used to it, guys.
01:08Evan isn't, so just hang in there, buddy.
01:11Oh, it's fun.
01:12Four days ahead.
01:13Oh, no.
01:14I told him, yeah, me too.
01:16Yeah.
01:17Yeah.
01:17I mean, maybe we should call it goo vodka, Stiney.
01:23Do you know what I mean?
01:24That's a four.
01:24We could do that.
01:26We could do that.
01:27Stars are stars, and that's the middle change.
01:30Yeah, exactly.
01:31Absolutely.
01:33This joint practice with the Denver Broncos today, I don't know if you heard Joe Shasky call in,
01:39but Willard, we got trouble brewing with this team.
01:43Mac is back.
01:44Yeah.
01:44I did not hear Joe Shasky.
01:48He said, Mac Jones looks great.
01:50Oh, okay.
01:51Oh, good.
01:52I'm glad Mac Jones looks great.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Is there an implication there that someone else doesn't?
01:58Is that what we're saying, Stiney?
01:59No, it was more than an implication.
02:01It was more of a description.
02:03Mac Jones looks extremely confident in the pocket, and Brock Purdy against the Super Bowl-bound
02:10Denver Broncos defense does not.
02:12I do think Denver's going to be good this year.
02:15I do.
02:16They were good last year.
02:17Yeah.
02:17Yeah.
02:18August 7th.
02:19You're not going to get me, Stiney.
02:20Don't do it.
02:21You're not going to get me.
02:22What do you mean?
02:23You're not going to get concerned about some stupid practice on August 7th.
02:26Oh, you don't care that Mike L. Williams is limping off the field?
02:29That's different.
02:30That's an injury.
02:30That's not how someone looks.
02:32That's an injury.
02:33You're not worried about Purdy's two interceptions?
02:35No.
02:35He threw a touchdown.
02:37Yeah.
02:37No, I'm not worried about Purdy's two interceptions.
02:40Are you worried about Ricky Pierce not being able to get off press coverage?
02:45That is an inaccurate statement.
02:47That's an inaccurate statement, first of all.
02:50And no, I would not be worried about it, but it's an inaccurate statement.
02:54Shasky says they're going to have to use Pearsall in motion.
02:57Okay.
02:58Do you want to...
02:59Come on, dude.
03:01Do you want to battle with Nick Wagner or the report today that Pearsall got beat by
03:08Sertain one time and then beat him the next seven?
03:11Is that like...
03:12That's not...
03:13We're not going to do that?
03:14Well, those are your sources.
03:15Well, I mean, those are...
03:16Yeah, those are people that actually cover the team.
03:19I mean...
03:19Oh.
03:20The defensive player of the year was clearly just letting Ricky Pierce all have a couple
03:23to make him feel better about himself.
03:25Yeah.
03:25Like, I mean, it's joint practice.
03:27Smoke a joint?
03:28Go home.
03:29All right.
03:30All right.
03:31What do you want to talk about, then?
03:33Before the Niners.
03:33Other than the travails of the Niners.
03:35We can talk about anything.
03:36I just don't want to get into your little...
03:39The fishhook.
03:40My little?
03:40Yeah.
03:41What's my little?
03:42Well, your little is clearly...
03:43I mean, this is the other piece of goo not being here today, is you're not hosting with
03:48someone who will allow you to stick the hook in the mouth every single day and get angry
03:52with all of this sort of cherry picking that you do.
03:57Instead, you have Evan there who stays a little bit more measured with the whole thing.
04:02And so now you're trying to bring it to the crossover.
04:04And I'm not going to let you do it, Stiney.
04:06How many people has Willard hit already today on the crossover?
04:10Dude.
04:11Me?
04:11You?
04:12Shasky?
04:12I had to listen to you talk about the 1977 Yankees for the last eight minutes.
04:17I think you can allow him to slug you one day.
04:20What's your point?
04:21I mean...
04:21Well, and I heard a Bucky Dent reference, which is pretty cool.
04:24That's not a real person.
04:25It actually is, and I'll never forget where I was when Bucky Dent hit the famous home run,
04:31Stiney, because I was in school that day, and they let us have an elongated, a prolonged
04:37lunch so we could watch that game when Bucky Dent ruined the Red Sox dreams at Fenway.
04:44Yeah.
04:45It was a little later in the day for me, because I was on the East Coast, but remember it well.
04:50Of course, Carly Stramski popping up to Greg Nettles, Willard, ended that one-game playoff.
04:58That's enough.
04:58If we had only known that years later, his grandson would give dibs one of his greatest
05:03memories at Oracle Park.
05:04Oh, no doubt.
05:05What happened?
05:06Oh, I was at the Splash Slam game with my then-girlfriend, my now-wife, the mother of
05:13my child, and it was in 2021 when you had to be socially separated in games, and so there
05:19was about 7,000 of us there, and Giants were down big early, and we didn't leave.
05:23And it turned out, you know, we stuck, and Yaz hit the Splash Slam, and now he's a royal?
05:31Is that right?
05:31He's a royal.
05:32He's a royal.
05:33Yeah.
05:33Yeah.
05:34There you go.
05:35He's quite royal.
05:36Actually, he was getting a round of applause last night for his home run robbery.
05:42You know, it's funny, because you were coming down Steining's road, Willard, which I really
05:46do appreciate and would encourage at all times.
05:49But he was actually, I got to say, Sonny, I think you were probably the more optimistic
05:55about the 49ers as a whole during these four hours, kind of up until Shasky came on.
06:02And I do think that what we started with was a bit of a misrepresentation sensation, if
06:08you will, of your overall confidence level in this team.
06:12Am I right?
06:12Cha-ching!
06:14I guess.
06:15I mean, I think that...
06:18He doesn't have a strong opinion.
06:19I'm trying to prop you up, man.
06:21Yeah.
06:21No, I heard a lot of this show, Evan.
06:23You hate Brock Purdy.
06:24I like...
06:25Yeah.
06:26No, he just thinks he's average.
06:28He just won't...
06:28He won't affect any outcome this year, Willard.
06:31Well, that's fine.
06:31That's fine.
06:32Like, I've moved through getting triggered by people's Purdy opinions.
06:37So, you know, it's all good.
06:39Like, let's see what it looks like when they play football games.
06:43That's okay if you think that he's just, you know, mediocre.
06:47That's fine.
06:47That's not crazy.
06:48I don't think that top ten is mediocre.
06:51I think it's...
06:51I just don't think he's a top five guy.
06:53Is that such an out-of-bounds reach?
06:56No.
06:56No, that's not an out-of-bounds reach.
06:58I think your opinion evolved a little bit throughout the show.
07:03Because I don't...
07:03Like, that's where you arrived.
07:05I don't know that that's where you started.
07:07At least that's what my ears heard.
07:10I got you.
07:10Yeah.
07:11If you go back to the beginning when you were kind of doing the, like,
07:14we know who this player is.
07:16He's not going to go win you games.
07:19And I was driving around going, I don't know that we know that.
07:23I feel like you might feel that.
07:25And you could be right.
07:27But I don't...
07:28I don't think that's a collective opinion.
07:30And here's something that I want to throw at everybody today.
07:34Because Grandy did an awesome job of gathering all this stuff.
07:38Because, you know, you're saying, okay, Burrow and Lamar and Josh Allen,
07:44Patrick Mahomes and whatever.
07:46So everybody always does those four.
07:47Great.
07:48Sure.
07:48He's not those guys.
07:50Is he Jared Goff?
07:52Is that like a good...
07:53That's what I said.
07:55Right.
07:56Well, yes.
07:56You said that literally after we were all diving in to do this research.
08:01I'm glad I could help you.
08:02Yeah, you're welcome.
08:03And thank you.
08:04But if he's Jared Goff, why does that fan base chant his name throughout every game?
08:13But this fan base seems to largely...
08:17And I don't want to paint with a broad brush because it's far from everyone.
08:20But this fan base seems to often just kind of watch Purdy with a side eye.
08:27And they want him to go prove different things.
08:30They've both been to a Super Bowl and lost.
08:33They both have similar completion percentages.
08:36And Goff's got a little bit better TD to interception ratio.
08:40Goff's got a few more wins.
08:42Et cetera, et cetera.
08:43But they have very, very comparable career resumes.
08:46One fan base can't stop chanting his name.
08:51And the other fan base is like, well, you're not any good unless we put amazing players around you.
08:57I'm interested in that.
08:58Probably because the answer to when was the last time the Detroit Lions won a Super Bowl.
09:04Or even when.
09:04And that's fair.
09:05But then again, when was the last time the Niners won a Super Bowl?
09:07Oh, or even...
09:08Yeah, your generation, Evan, has not seen the 49ers win a Super Bowl either.
09:13Okay, fine.
09:13When was the last time the Lions went to a Super Bowl?
09:16Never.
09:16That would be never.
09:17Yeah.
09:17There's your answer.
09:19Well, that's part of the answer.
09:20And I also think that it is part of the newness of what Detroit is experiencing with Jared Goff,
09:26as opposed to the Niners, where if you're an older fan like Mark or myself,
09:31or if Stiney actually had a team that he cared about, then he would qualify.
09:34But, you know, you remember Montana and Young, and you have a certain amount of a legacy.
09:41It's a legacy, Stiney, and Detroit doesn't have that.
09:44No, and also, I think that when Goff got to Detroit, he embraced the situation.
09:52And because Detroit's never been a winning team, and then they started to win with a quarterback who wanted to be there,
10:00you know, that gets you a long way probably in Detroit.
10:03Yeah, and he had no choice but to be there.
10:07I mean, he got dealt there.
10:08And so, yeah, he got there at the right time where you had a little bit of a changing of the guard.
10:13And I wonder about Detroit this year.
10:15I think that they are prime for a regression, a team that lost both coordinators,
10:20and a team that's been high on the hog and everything going their way.
10:24I think Detroit is a team that I would look to fade this year.
10:27Question for you, and I should know this.
10:30Didn't the Eagles get rid of both their coordinators before last season?
10:36The answer is yes.
10:37Yeah, that sounds right, and I believe, Evan.
10:40So, you never know, I guess, is what I would say to that.
10:43I mean, both of the Eagles guys didn't go get head coaching jobs.
10:46That would be probably the difference is they actually upgraded.
10:50Okay, that's fair.
10:51I mean, I'm with Dibs.
10:52I think the Lions are going to take a step back,
10:54but a step back from 14 wins is probably still a pretty good team.
10:58You know what I mean?
10:58By the way, we're being told in our ear that the Eagle coordinator change was prior to the Eagle year
11:07where they lost to the Bucs in the playoffs.
11:09So, it was two years ago.
11:10Okay.
11:10Two years ago.
11:11Yeah, that got awkward in a hurry.
11:13So, they did actually technically have a little bit of a regression.
11:16It did not get awkward at all.
11:19Then it got super awkward.
11:20It always gets awkward with you, Stiney.
11:22And then he got rebuked, and I won't say who fed that to us through our ear.
11:26That's probably Grandy.
11:27It was Mark Grandy.
11:28I mean, it's his own mate.
11:30Okay.
11:32So, they did change coordinators, though, before the Super Bowl year.
11:36Two years ago.
11:37Two seasons.
11:37So, there was a full season, and then the Super Bowl season.
11:42That's all.
11:43Oh, they lost Gannon.
11:45Right.
11:45So, it was prior to the year that the Niners clowned them with Debo in November.
11:51Oh, yes.
11:52When they made the playoffs.
11:53Right, right, right, right.
11:54Not to be mixed up with the game where the Eagles dominated and just absolutely ran Purdy out of Philadelphia.
12:03Well, they ripped his arm off.
12:04So, yeah.
12:04I mean.
12:05I don't think they ran him.
12:06They kind of dragged him.
12:07Oh, boy.
12:08They grabbed him.
12:09Yeah, I mean.
12:09Kicking and screaming.
12:10Yeah.
12:11And they were trailing at the time.
12:12And I love when you, like, try to glom on to Philadelphia when they're good.
12:17You've got no Eagle apparel.
12:19You have no Eagle fandom yet.
12:21When they're good and the Niners are bad, oh, here comes Stiney with his Fly Eagles fly.
12:28You know, that's not me.
12:30I mean, and Willard, listen, I'll go to Willard on this one.
12:34What is you, Stiney?
12:35That's what we're all trying to figure out.
12:37Mark.
12:37Yeah.
12:38Do you remember me ever going on any kind of victory tour about the Philadelphia Eagles?
12:45No.
12:47No.
12:48A little bit last year.
12:49Not an Eagle thing, but a Sirianni thing.
12:51Well, I did get, yes.
12:52Yeah, a little bit on the Sirianni thing last year.
12:55Oh.
12:55And he won.
12:57He won.
12:57So, I mean, if you, you know.
12:59That was a good year for me.
13:00Yeah.
13:00Well, it was a good year for Sirianni.
13:02It was an okay year for you.
13:04Okay.
13:04Fair enough.
13:05Yeah.
13:05Hold on.
13:06I got to.
13:06Brought to you by new vodka.
13:07Yeah, and you're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ-FM and HD1 San Francisco, an Odyssey
13:14sports station in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the
13:17free Odyssey app.
13:19And right now we're coming to you live from Laughing Monk Brewing in Sunnyvale.
13:24We've done two shows here, a lot of fun.
13:27I've had listeners come out, food great, drinks great, Laughing Monk, righteously brewed in
13:32San Francisco, and also Sunnyvale.
13:34It's a good place.
13:35Good place.
13:36Yeah, you guys have been here.
13:37That's right.
13:38Been there multiple times.
13:39Been there on the clock and off the clock.
13:41And it's absolutely fantastic.
13:44Did you indeed pick the Cobb salad?
13:47I did.
13:48You did?
13:48And how'd that go for you?
13:49Because I listened to the radio.
13:51Like, yeah.
13:52How did it go for you?
13:53I'm going to tell you exactly how it went, Mark.
13:55Okay, thanks.
13:55Were you liking it early?
13:56And then what happened toward the end?
13:58You know what's funny, Mark?
13:59Is I liked it later better than I liked it in the beginning.
14:02Oh, okay.
14:03It grew on you.
14:04Yeah.
14:04They had two choices for dressing.
14:08I went with the blue cheese.
14:11Reluctantly.
14:11I'm kind of a honey mustard slash vinaigrette guy.
14:15But you know what?
14:17But you know what?
14:18What?
14:19It worked.
14:20And I finished the entire Cobb salad.
14:22Well, not the tomatoes.
14:24I'm not a big tomato guy.
14:25No, that's fine.
14:26But other than that, I cleaned up.
14:29Okay.
14:29Okay.
14:31Evan, what'd you order?
14:33I had, I think it's just the Power Bowl.
14:36I don't know.
14:37It's got spinach, sweet potatoes, some brown rice, avocado, threw a little chicken on there,
14:42and some light lemon dress.
14:44It was divine, is what it was.
14:46And did you get a workout in in the break right after that?
14:50No, that'll be a little bit later.
14:51Yeah, I need some fuel for about a couple hours from now.
14:55You know me, guys.
14:55Nice job.
14:56There were no doubt push-ups that went on during the break.
14:59Evan banged out a quick 50 because he had to keep that sculpt, especially the top half.
15:03Am I right?
15:05Well, apparently Shasky doesn't like it.
15:06He was coming down my road for the shirt I was wearing today, which I believe I wear
15:12probably three or four times a month.
15:15He hadn't seen it before, but it's neither here nor there.
15:19Yeah, we had to get a little workout in.
15:22I don't know.
15:22It was tough because so many people were coming in that we had to talk to that you want to meet the fans.
15:27San Jose Jazz fans here.
15:28Charles is here.
15:29We had our guys from the fire department come by a little bit earlier.
15:32Everybody's flooding in, grabbing food, grabbing drinks.
15:35There's just too much to do during the commercial breaks down here, guys.
15:39Yeah.
15:39No doubt.
15:40Now, what was the timing of the day?
15:42You guys didn't see any practice prior to starting your show, did you?
15:47No, we're pretty much on an island here.
15:49Okay.
15:49Okay.
15:50So you didn't even go over to the facility, did you?
15:52No, we didn't have time.
15:53That's why we had Joe Shasky on at 1 o'clock.
15:56No, I just wanted to make sure the timing of the night of practice to see how it kind of fits you all in.
16:02So basically, you're questioning Brock Purdy's performance even though you didn't see any of it.
16:09Oh, no, but I heard.
16:10Okay.
16:10Ah, yeah.
16:11Okay.
16:11Yeah, sources.
16:12He got sources.
16:13That's fine.
16:14That's fine.
16:14I didn't see it either.
16:15So Marvin Gaye.
16:16Yeah.
16:17Okay.
16:17And I mean, you know, the joint practice stats are about as important as the practice stats
16:23or as important as the preseason game stats.
16:27So, yeah, if you want to hang your hat on the fact that he threw two picks today, you can do that.
16:31You're allowed to.
16:33Let me throw this one out because it was something that we were kind of talking about as it relates to McCaffrey.
16:41Because, you know, Shasky said that he was not in on every play today.
16:45And it probably had something to do with, you know, a pitch count or, you know, you're trying to protect him a little bit.
16:53Is that who Kyle Shanahan is?
16:55In other words, if McCaffrey – I always think of Shanahan as the kind of guy who – well, if you're out there, I've got to use you.
17:05You know, if you can't play, then you can't play.
17:07But do you think Shanahan is capable of kind of using McCaffrey with a plan toward having him be effective later in the year?
17:21I mean, in practice, sure.
17:22I'm talking games.
17:23Yeah, but I mean, that's like – probably not.
17:28And that's an interesting way to phrase it.
17:30Is he capable?
17:31Sure, anybody's capable of it.
17:33But I just don't think that that's the way most NFL coaches' brains work.
17:38And we've seen both situations either burn people or not.
17:43You know what I mean?
17:43Like, we had this conversation yesterday and brought up Bijon Robinson.
17:47And I don't even know how to pronounce it anymore.
17:49If it's like the mustard and it's Bijon mustard or if it's Bijon, I don't know.
17:53But whatever, you all know who I'm talking about.
17:56And when he was a rookie, and this is largely the fantasy football community,
17:59but people were livid at how little they were using him based on the output they were getting.
18:05And that's a team that did not end up winning a lot of games.
18:08I'm not going to say that was necessarily the reason why.
18:11But, like, I don't know.
18:13I kind of have all coaches' backs when it comes down to, like, there's only 17 of these games a year.
18:20However, you cannot do load management in football.
18:26You just can't.
18:27You have got to win those games.
18:30And so if things are held in the balance and you've got a healthy player,
18:35how are you supposed to hold him back?
18:37You know what I mean?
18:37Like, I get it if you're up by three scores in the fourth quarter.
18:40But outside of that, you've got to ride your horses, don't you?
18:45That's kind of what I brought up.
18:47But, I mean, just generically, you know, I use this score.
18:51I said, well, if you're – let's say the 49ers are up 24-7 with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter
18:58and they have the ball.
18:59You know what?
19:00I'm not taking McCaffrey out yet if the game's 24-7.
19:05Like, let's get a couple first downs, get it down to eight minutes.
19:09We'll punt, and then that's when we'll take them out.
19:13I just – like, it's just like the NBA in a way now.
19:18Like, 15-point lead with six minutes, you better nail it down.
19:22And there's nothing worse than losing a game that, you know, you think you had in hand.
19:29So I don't have a problem with a coach who would use McCaffrey an extra possession or two to salt away a game.
19:37Yeah, I'm sorry, Evan.
19:39If you look back to 2023 and you look at his splits,
19:43the fourth quarter of games was by far the fewest amount of carries he had in the entire year.
19:50It was the first quarter followed by the second quarter, followed by the third quarter, then the fourth quarter.
19:55So everyone who wants to say, oh, you know, he's trying to grind him into dust and he's running him into the ground,
20:02he only had 55 fourth-quarter carries in a year where they were probably ahead in most games.
20:08No, but I do think that – we talked about it earlier – like, the running backs that have been able to stay,
20:13number one, healthy, and number two, productive at the age that McCaffrey is moving into
20:16have generally moving Derrick Henry to the side because he's in, I think, a totally different category.
20:22He's a freak.
20:23He's the exception to the rule.
20:24So they've been around 300 touches.
20:26Aaron Jones, James Conner, Alvin Kamara are the three guys that have been very good at their respective ages.
20:33I think Conner and Jones are even older than McCaffrey, but they've been about at 300 touches.
20:39The last time that McCaffrey was the focal point of the Niners' offense in the regular season,
20:44it was about 350 and then, you know, 60 or 70 in the postseason.
20:48Like, to me, I do think there has to be a little more consideration for the full-year workload.
20:55And I know that's hard to kind of manage week to week, but if he's going to be leading this league in touches again,
21:01I have a hard time believing he's going to make it to week 18.
21:05It's crazy.
21:06So were the Eagles out of line with what they did with Barkley last year?
21:09No, but I do think that there's going to be consequences of that and this year that Saquon might not be able to finish the full season.
21:17Yeah, like he was up well north of anything the Niners have ever done with McCaffrey in terms of touches.
21:25I think my quick math says that he was at 378 touches last year.
21:30They win the Super Bowl.
21:32He's only a year younger than McCaffrey.
21:34He's also had major injury in the past.
21:37You fading Saquon Barkley this year?
21:39Yes, yes, I will be.
21:41That's why I faded Christian McCaffrey last year.
21:45Running backs that touch the ball more than 400 times, you can look at Henry, Zeke, McCaffrey, even Saquon, I think the first time he did it.
21:53Like, guys that touch the ball 400 times in a season typically get hurt or have a down year.
21:58That's just been the way the majority of running backs have gone.
22:02Well, I mean, you look at that, but then you go back to McCaffrey in 2023 when they used him a bunch,
22:08and then he goes 17 for 98 and two touchdowns in the playoffs, then 20 for 90, two touchdowns in the playoffs,
22:16and he had 11 catches combined in those two games.
22:19And then the Super Bowl, he had 22 carries for 80 yards, and I know he had the big fumble.
22:24He also scored a receiving touchdown, but I didn't see the slowdown from McCaffrey.
22:30Even though they used him a bunch, he did not get worse in the playoffs.
22:33All right, gents.
22:36Real quick, Stiney, you know, sometimes in life you do have to stick to your guns,
22:40and there was something that I thought I was wrong about earlier, which I was actually correct about.
22:45In 2023, the Eagles coordinators with Brian Johnson and Sean Desai, last year they were Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.
22:53So, Mark Grandy, thank you for correcting me.
22:56I was actually correct in the first place.
22:57Well, they did them both times.
22:59They're two coordinators from the year.
23:01They lost the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, got head coaching jobs,
23:03so that was just their second try of replacing them.
23:06But the point was that coordinators changed, and you said it didn't happen.
23:12No, I just said it happened for the first time two years ago.
23:15It also happened last year.
23:17Did you tell these guys are roommates?
23:18The Warrior postgame show this year is going to be lit.
23:22Absolutely lit.
23:24And you know where it's going to be lit?
23:25Oh, boy.
23:26Oh, boy.
23:2795-7.
23:29Just go.
23:30Out of the game.
23:30Just go.
