Despite heavy investment—reportedly over £11 million on players like Cacace, O’Brien, Coady, and Moore, and a broader £20–30 million transfer budget—Wrexham’s fundamental transfer model hasn’t shifted: they’re still leaning on high-profile, expensive acquisitions and continuity rather than embracing loans or broader squad depth strategies.

00:00now for Wrexham of course
00:04they're preparing for a season in England's second tier
00:07which is the championship after what has been
00:09let's be honest a meteoric rise
00:11since they were taken over by their Hollywood owners
00:13of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
00:15a few years ago
00:16they were in non-league football
00:19when the two of them took over the Welsh club
00:21and now they're in England's second tier
00:23and just one promotion away from the Premier League
00:25it's been quite the rise
00:27obviously a lot of money pumped into them
00:29as a club which is
00:31unfortunately probably the way that things have
00:33to be done if you're wanting to achieve
00:35success in the modern game of football
00:37in this country
00:38so what can Wrexham achieve this season
00:41certainly they've been busy
00:43so far in the transfer market
00:45once again bringing in a whole host
00:47of new players to the club
00:49trying to make them competitive for the championship
00:52they've done this all the way through
00:53they've understood that you can't just be competitive in one league
00:55and then be promoted and then expect the same players
00:58to once again be good enough
00:59you have to build as a club
01:00and some players unfortunately get left behind in that journey
01:03but they've done what they were brought in to do
01:06for that period
01:08but now they're heading into England's second tier
01:10and they're looking to compete
01:13whether promotion is on the cards this season
01:16perhaps might be a step too far
01:18for them after of course all those successive
01:20and back-to-back promotions they've had
01:21in the journey up to this point
01:23but the championship is a hard, hard league
01:26but I think they'll certainly give it a good crack
01:29so to find out exactly where they're at
01:31in terms of their spending
01:31what they've done so far this summer
01:33and also what they can achieve going into the championship
01:36let's go now to our Wales sport correspondent
01:39Charles Haig-Jones
01:40Charles, let's look at Wrexham's spending so far
01:43this summer
01:44and where it leaves them
01:45ahead of the new season
01:46which of course gets underway for them
01:48at the end of the week
01:50so Charles, what can you tell us
01:51and what are you expecting
01:52from Wrexham this season?
01:57Yeah, Wrexham's transfers
01:59have been pretty unbelievable really
02:02as we mentioned before
02:04they have broken their transfer record
02:06a number of times
02:07I believe the last time
02:09that they actually broke it
02:11before they broke it this summer
02:12was something to do with the 1960s
02:15this is a record
02:17that's been standing for so long now
02:19for Wrexham
02:20they're a club who are certainly on the rise
02:22they're a club who
02:23as it's been well documented
02:25are showing found interest
02:28in the Premier League
02:29in making that step up
02:31one thing that sort of interested me
02:34and I think could come to bite them
02:36in the long term
02:37is the fact that their assets
02:38they don't really have many young players
02:41who are going to be
02:42sort of pushing them across the line
02:46and inventing to sort of get a bit more profit
02:48in terms of outgoing transfers
02:50but if that's the way
02:52these owners want to do it
02:54I mean that's the model
02:55they've gone for the last few seasons
02:56and they've gone back-to-back-to-back promotions
02:58an EFL record
02:59to make it another promotion
03:01you know that is
03:04the biggest ask at the moment
03:06I think that's going to be
03:07an incredibly tough task
03:08they've obviously got
03:08Birmingham City League one winners
03:10you know you can't forget
03:11they've come up with them
03:12you've got the teams dropping down
03:13from the Premier League
03:14who are going to be right up there again
03:16and there's teams who have also invested
03:17and have takeovers for example
03:19and as we mentioned before
03:21that pool of uncertainty
03:22those clubs as well
03:23you don't know how they're going to operate
03:24but I mean
03:26to have offered
03:28Christian Eriksen
03:29a deal
03:31Stuart Armstrong
03:32Danny Ings
03:34you know
03:34these are incredible links
03:36for a club like Wrexham
03:37and then you also do actually
03:39have to point out
03:40that players are choosing Wrexham
03:42you know this isn't just
03:43a journey
03:45for the club
03:46to go and boast about
03:47this is a journey where
03:49you know
03:50players are dropping
03:51from higher levels
03:52to go and play for Wrexham
03:53and be involved
03:55and be linked
03:55and be interested
03:56in the project they're doing
03:57they've spent over £13 million
04:00this summer
04:01as I say
04:02that's another record for them
04:04but you know
04:06when they didn't get promotion
04:07and when we're speaking
04:08of the prospects
04:09of championship promotion
04:10we did say
04:11they had to go and break
04:12that record
04:13and maybe have to go
04:14and change that transfer model
04:16as well
04:16which they haven't done
04:17don't think they're going
04:18to be up there
04:19challenging for promotion
04:20just because
04:21of the
04:22you know sort of
04:23yes they've got experience
04:24but are they consistent
04:25with that model
04:26we'll see
04:27I do think they will survive
04:29though
04:29I think there's worse teams
04:30in the championship
04:31there's worse teams
04:31who haven't invested
04:32as well
04:33we'll see
04:34but for Wrexham fans
04:35it's very interesting
04:36they have to be that delighted
04:38and just enjoy
04:39every moment
04:40to be back
04:41in the second tier
04:42you
04:44you
