Where in the EU are the most people employed in the sports industry?

Employment in the sports sector across the EU continues to grow, reaching 1.6 million jobs in 2024. But worryingly, the gender gap has widened since 2011.

00:00Where in Europe are employment levels in the sports industry highest?
00:09The number of sports-related jobs is growing in the European Union.
00:14Between 2023 and 2024, employment in the sector rose by 6.5%,
00:20reaching 1.6 million employed people last year.
00:24Sweden leads the way, with 1.50% of its workforce being employed in the sports industry.
00:30Followed by Denmark, with 1.37%, and Spain, with 1.17%.
00:35By contrast, Romania, Bulgaria and Czechia recorded the fewest people working in this sector.
00:42Last year, more than one-third of all people working in the sports sector were aged between 15 and 29 years old.
00:48Both men and women saw a drop in employment in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but numbers recovered in 2022.
00:57Gender inequality is, however, a long-standing problem here, and it has even widened since 2011.
01:04In 2024, over 900,000 men were working in sport, compared to just over 700,000 women.
01:11Women also remain underrepresented in top positions.
01:15In 2024, women held fewer than a quarter of top decision-making roles in national sports federations
01:21across the EU's 10 most popular sports, ranging from just under 8% in Slovenia to 51% in Sweden.
