Nvidia pushed back Tuesday against Chinese accusations that its AI data center chips contain a hidden “kill switch” or backdoor, according to CNBC. Chief Security Officer David Reber wrote in a blog post that Nvidia GPUs “do not and should not” have such features. The rebuttal follows a demand by China’s Cyberspace Administration for documentation on alleged vulnerabilities in Nvidia’s H20 chip, designed for the Chinese market. The U.S. has imposed export controls on certain Nvidia chips to prevent China from using them to advance its AI capabilities or military power. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued that U.S. interests are best served if Nvidia’s chips become the global AI standard, including in China. Silicon Valley experts widely believe that backdoors in devices are unacceptable due to the security risks they pose. Reber warned that secret backdoors are dangerous, exploitable by hackers, and violate core cybersecurity principles.
