During a press briefing on Tuesday, Massachusetts Secretary William Galvin (D-MA) spoke about redistricting in Texas.
Transcript
00:00Thank you, Governor.
00:01I'm delighted to be with you and them today.
00:04I think the point you made about their effort being a national effort is extremely important.
00:09These folks did not flee Texas.
00:12They came here to get the message out to the rest of us across this country that when you
00:17do what Trump has done in Texas and is attempting to conclude in Texas, you're stealing the
00:23rights of Massachusetts voters and voters throughout this country.
00:27You know, Trump likes to use the word rigged.
00:30It's one of his favorite words, rigged and stolen.
00:33Well, he's the master thief here.
00:36He's the one who's trying to crack open the safe on democracy and rip its contents all over
00:41the place.
00:43They're here to get that message out.
00:45This is not about their seats, their political futures or their friends or anybody else.
00:50You're talking about people, and I want to give you the facts.
00:53The Texas primary that this map is supposed to be placed in is scheduled for March 3rd of
01:00next year.
01:01That's barely over six months from now.
01:03So people in Texas won't even know what district they're going to be asked to vote in.
01:08And voters won't know who they're going to be asked to vote for.
01:11That's the kind of democracy, which is laughable to call it a democracy, that Trump wants.
01:17He doesn't care about the rules.
01:18He's perfectly happy to rig things when he gets it.
01:21So we all have to stand up.
01:23As the governor mentioned, we're all here a few months ago celebrating the 250th anniversary
01:27of the beginning of the American Revolution.
01:29And some of our most famous patriots indeed fled at that time in the interest of democracy.
01:35John Hancock, for instance, and others.
01:37And they lived to tell the story of what we were trying to do then 250 years ago.
01:43Democracy started here.
01:44We have to make sure it stays alive throughout our country.
01:48That's our true gift to our country.
01:49We want to protect it.
01:51We have an obligation here in Massachusetts to stand with these folks, to get their story
01:55out, and to make it clear to the nation.
01:57It doesn't matter whether you're a Democrat or Republican or Independent.
02:00What matters is if you're an American, you should be standing to make sure that Americans
02:04in Texas have the right to vote for a member of Congress, of their choosing, and in a district
02:10that makes some sense.
02:11And if you're an American who's concerned about Congress, you should understand that these votes
02:15he's trying to steal in Texas will come back to hurt us with national legislation that's
02:20going to affect the lives of everybody in this country.
02:22So it's extremely important that we not simply say, isn't this nice they've come to Boston?
02:27No.
02:28They've come here on a mission.
02:29And it's our job to make sure that mission is heard and is effective throughout the country
02:33to the effect of protecting democracy, which is really what this is all about.
