On Saturday, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) spoke to CNN about proposed redistricting in Texas.
Transcript
00:00Congressman, thanks so much for being here with us. You are one, your seat is one of the five
00:04being targeted in all of this. Do you think that means if this goes through, you just won't,
00:11you won't be able to run? You won't be able to win?
00:14No, I think I'll win in the new seat as well. I just think it's unfair what they're doing.
00:18They're trying, it's the most aggressive power grab of American democracy in our history.
00:24And it's as clear as that. And what they do is they think they can't win because of the awful
00:30policies that they've passed in their period of time. When you cut $500 billion of Medicare for
00:34seniors and veteran care and student loan programs and all these awful things just to give the
00:39billionaires and multinationals the biggest tax break in American history, you know,
00:45the American people are going to come after you this next term. And that's exactly what they're
00:48trying to prevent. So then now they're trying to cheat the system and rig it to try to help them
00:53win. I feel confident that anywhere in South Texas that I can succeed and win the election,
01:00because at the end of the day, we're all Texans and we're watching very closely and people are
01:04upset. We've never in our history seen a Texas governor bow to a New Yorker the way we are seeing
01:14this governor do. And these Texans that are around the country trying to hold the line of democracy
01:20are real heroes. Now, look, Governor Abbott, Vals, he's just going to keep calling special sessions.
01:26Democrats, I would assume, can't just stay out of the state for, you know, the next several years.
01:33Is this a winnable fight for you all? You know, I think that's something that we need to discuss,
01:40obviously with the lawyers. I don't know how far I'm not in communication with the state legislature,
01:45so I don't know how far they intend to take this. But it would be great if the Republicans just changed
01:51their mind and said, hey, this is a bad deal. We're causing a redistricting civil war in America,
01:56because what you're going to see after Texas does it, you're going to see California do it,
02:00then you're going to see Florida do it, then you're going to see New York do it and Maryland and on and
02:03on and on. And I'm really opposed, as a middle-of-the-road member of the Democratic Party,
02:09I'm really opposed to either party doing it. We need to have the voice of the people in this
02:13country heard. And districts have already been drawn. They were drawn after this 2020 census.
02:19Let's continue upholding the rule of law and democracy for Americans and assuring that they
02:25have a voice. What we have this administration doing is they want to choose their voters.
02:30They don't want voters to be able to choose their representatives. And they already have.
02:34In fact, they've done it twice for the most part in this country already. And in the middle of the
02:38decade, they're doing something that is pretty much unprecedented or certainly unconventional.
02:44And especially after having passed some horrible proposals through this legislature,
02:50they're now trying to rig the system to cheat and win. They know that they can't win
02:56legitimately, and they're trying to cheat the American people. It's simple as that.
03:02Yeah.
03:09Amen.
03:09Yay.
03:10F cordless period which I wanted to say that
03:12is that if your trache has already였orded the cost,
03:17let's argue that to them.
03:19My crippling is an excess of vice versa,
03:24one of the Aristarchs who is going toå°† Democratic Party Party vivir
03:26as a river from an end of the year.
