00:17back to 1938 has long been admired for its classic design but behind the bold lines and

00:23vintage charm lies a growing problem. It's just too small for today's firefighting needs.

00:28The appliance bay doors are so narrow that engines often strike the sides on their way

00:34out to emergencies, slowing response times and creating safety risk. Cracks have appeared

00:41in the building due to ground movement and the station lacks essential modern facilities

00:47including proper decontamination areas and welfare spaces for crews. A new planning application

00:53by Avon Fire and Rescue Service calls the current station not fit for purpose.

00:58It lays out ambitious plans for a complete rebuild. The proposed station would feature

01:04six appliance bays instead of five, each taller and wider to accommodate today's larger vehicles.

01:10The design includes improved equipment storage, energy efficient systems and dedicated spaces

01:17to support firefighters' physical and mental health. Fire crews have rallied behind the proposal,

01:24stressing how vital modern recovery areas are for a job that regularly exposes them to trauma,

01:32extreme heat and life or death decisions. The current station they say offers the bare minimum when it comes

01:38to helping firefighters decompress. The new station would include peaceful rest zones.
