Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo told participants of the two-day-long CloudTech & DataCentre Conference 2.0 in his keynote address on Wednesday (Aug 6) that companies need to catch up with reality of the digital era and they should digitise their data in their dealings.

He said the government would do its part to ensure the cyberworld and data centres are secured.

00:00And now, even discussions about 6G.
00:04When we speak about infrastructure,
00:06we don't only talk about connectivity anymore.
00:09We speak about new technologies such as AI.
00:12Now, in order for us to have AI,
00:14and to see and feel the real impact of it,
00:17we need to understand the power of data.
00:21Data consists in many different forms.
00:24As you know, when we talk about data,
00:27the purposes of AI,
00:29you're talking about digitized data.
00:32But here we are in a country
00:35in which we have operated for many years,
00:37using systems which were largely analog.
00:40So a lot of the data is still in written form.
00:43It is still in audio form.
00:45It is still in visual form.
00:47Now, we need to look at how it is
00:49we can put together policies that will ensure
00:51that we're able to digitize the data that we have.
00:54Because if you don't digitize the data that you have,
00:57then it is not going to be able to be of any help
01:00when it comes to looking at AI and how AI works.
01:03I think this is something that all of us know.
01:06We speak about it.
01:07But the question is, what are you going to do about it?
01:10And more importantly,
01:12where is that agency in this country that's actually going to look into policies
01:17as to how it is we should get it done,
01:20formulate strategies with clear timelines
01:23so that we have clarity in terms of that policy,
01:26and subsequently execute those policies.
01:29Now, that was absent.
01:31And that's the reason why now we speak about a data commission.
01:34A data commission that will look at how it is data
01:38becomes the central feature of next generation technology
01:41which all of us need in order for us to partake
01:44in this new world of digital transformation.
01:47We have to understand that when you speak about data,
01:49you need to digitize data.
01:50Then you need to be able to use that data.
01:53In order to use that data, you need compute power.
01:56So in order to have compute power, you look at data centers.
01:59So policies around data commission, policies around data centers,
02:03these are conversations that are being held in the industry of digital.
02:06And I think if you look at the speech by the Prime Minister in Parliament
02:11when he tabled RMK 13,
02:13you can see that that is really a priority in RMK 13.
02:17It's about how it is we can pivot from doing things the old way
02:20to doing things using technology of today.
02:23And that will significantly empower us here in Malaysia.
02:26And we must prepare ourselves for it.
02:28Now, that is in respect of infrastructure.
02:31Now, you have infrastructure.
02:33You've got to make sure that people use the infrastructure.
02:35In order for people to use the infrastructure,
02:37you must convince them that it's secure.
02:39So this is where trust comes in.
02:41We are looking at not just policies.
02:43We are also looking at taking steps further.
02:45There's also regulatory processes that we have looked at.
02:49And ultimately, I think, as I said in my speech,
02:53a lot has been done, but there is still yet more to do.
02:58So a work in progress.
03:00So I can't see what I've been doing ...
03:01I think there's people in my life.
03:03I think there are ...
03:05It is not the other people,
03:07I think there's really hard to do ...
03:09I guess I'm probably more to do the same.
03:10So I can't see that ...
03:12I think there are still there.
03:13So I can't see that.
03:14It is really hard to do so.
03:16I think the way is that the Matt and brother
03:18that's doing is very hard to do so.
03:19I think there is a lot to do so.
