Gobind’s remarks came following a request from Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for states to be represented in the committee to better coordinate the nation’s digital infrastructure development.

00:00Three, two, one, take it away.
00:06We're going to hold on to our ribbon for a moment longer, and most of you are going to take
00:10another shot.
00:11The conversation around whether we have enough energy supply, whether there is going to be sufficient water,
00:18whether data centers will be built according to governance,
00:21these are questions that are constantly raised in industry discussions that we have.
00:27And I think the concerns extend across federal, to state, and also the local governments,
00:34because everyone has a role to play.
00:36When it comes to looking at data centers coming to the country, you, of course, deal with METI, for example,
00:42MIDA, MDAC,
00:43and you look at the data center task force that has been set up, which is co-chared by me
00:48and Datushri Johari Ghani.
00:50We look at the sufficiency of energy supply.
00:53There are discussions around alternative energy supply.
00:56Likewise, when it comes to water, there are conversations with the authorities as to whether we have sufficient supply,
01:02next generation technology, what it would do to that, and how we need to prepare for eventualities as we go
01:08ahead.
01:08We also speak about compute, whether or not we are able to look at the kind of demand we anticipate
01:14in the next five years,
01:15whether there would be sufficient supply for that.
01:17So there are conversations that are going on at federal level.
01:22At state level, of course, when it comes to questions of water, when it comes to questions of local authority
01:27approvals, these issues are managed there.
01:29So to your question as to how we look at these challenges, the answer is that we actually have platforms
01:36where there is collaboration,
01:37there is constant discussions.
01:39To the point raised by the Honourable Chief Minister earlier, invitation to all the states who also participate in the
01:46data center task force,
01:47that's in the process, a request has been come to the Chief Minister, that will be done.
01:52We actually have a current platform where we deal with all the ex-codes for the states, we meet every
01:58three months once,
01:59and I've invited them also to join us at the data task force.
02:02So yes, Norman, these are concerns, real concerns, and I think we have to acknowledge them.
02:07Discussions have been ongoing, we get a lot of feedback from the parties concerned, and moving ahead, this is where
02:14the Ministry of Digital comes in,
02:15because we want to build governance around not just data centers, but also next generation technology.
02:22The country has to be prepared for what we anticipate in the next five to ten years.
02:26We've got to start building now.
02:27We also have to look at ensuring that we have enough talent in the country for these new job opportunities
02:34that we anticipate.
02:36And, of course, there's also concerns about how new technology is going to have an impact on older jobs,
02:42and how we need to prepare Malaysia for that, so questions, discussions around up-skilling, re-skilling, all that is
02:48ongoing.
02:49Happy to sit with you at a separate conversation to explain it in detail, so I hope that answers the
02:53question.
