Race Discrimination Commissioner calls for more coordinated action to combat racism

The Race Discrimination Commissioner will use an address to the National Press Club today to call for more coordinated action to combat racism. Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman says racial discrimination laws are in need of reform.

00:00What we need is a positive duty to eliminate racism in the Race

00:07Discrimination Act. For too long the targets of racism have had to suffer

00:12harm and then bring action. We know a positive duty can work. There's been one

00:18in the Sex Discrimination Act to prevent sexual harassment for the last

00:21two years and businesses and employers have adapted. So we need the same thing

00:25in the Race Discrimination Act. Put the emphasis on stopping harm before it

00:31occurs and changing institutions and systems to eradicate racism. My biggest

00:36hope is that governments at all levels have committed, we've set up the

00:40Anti-Racism Task Force and we've progressed. And the thing to remember is

00:45fighting against racism is something that will actually benefit everyone in

00:50society. Nobody loses anything. We all gain from a society where the colour and

00:55the vibrance and the richness of the society is enhanced so much by all of us

00:59being able to be our whole selves in a safe way. It has enormous economic

01:05benefits and institutions that are more transparent and accountable are

01:09actually better for everyone. So I'm just hoping that people see this is a plan

01:14that actually improves everyone's lives.

01:18energy, whether it's a hell of a wolf in the South, in the back of the country.

01:22So I think that people will actually help you to keep raising the

01:23animals away. We definitely have the ability to help you to get rid of course.
