The High Court has heard Russia should be paid compensation on just terms for the removal of its lease on a block of land near parliament house in Canberra even if it loses its case. The court is hearing a challenge to the validity of a law passed by the Commonwealth two years ago which stripped Russia of the lease on the grounds of national security.

00:27Lawyers for Russia said it was an irony that the land remains available for diplomatic

00:35The Commonwealth faced questions from the judges about the purpose and consequences of removing
00:40Russia from the site.
00:42The Court was told the Parliament wanted to remove a security risk, and the only way to
00:47do that was to exclude Russia.
00:50The key question for the Court is whether the law is valid or not, and should Russia receive
00:56compensation on just terms.
00:59Just how much that would be is yet to be revealed.
