00:00The South Padre Island Dune ecosystem is a maze of fascinating plants that literally hold this island together.
00:08How you doing?
00:09What's up? How you doing?
00:10I'm good. It's good to see you out here. I'm glad we get to finally meet up.
00:15I've been at the house.
00:22So soothing. So calming.
00:24Basically, the house that we're going to be planting stuff at basically looked like this 100 years ago.
00:31We're going to come here to see what's growing, to get an idea of what would do well there.
00:35And so we see behind us, like, the sparsely vegetated four dunes, and then it opens up into this beautiful grassland.
00:44To be honest, it makes me a little wistful for Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana's sand dune prairies.
00:51Yeah, Indiana dunes is a similar thing. Probably similar species.
00:55Yeah, they're creeping dune plants.
00:58Dune plants everywhere must adapt to constantly shifting sands.
01:02And they do this by sinking their roots deep and rapidly expanding above the sand.
