00:00Perched on the southern banks of the River Tyne, the Stathes Café here in Dunstan is more than just a cosy spot for coffee.
00:07It's a tribute to one of the North East's most iconic industrial landmarks.
00:12Named after the colossal Dunstan Stathes, Europe's largest surviving timber structure,
00:17the Café blends riverside charm with rich local heritage.
00:21Once a hub of coal transport during the region's industrial heyday,
00:24the Stathes now provides a dramatic backdrop to a thriving community space where history, hospitality and regeneration comes together.
00:34We're coming up 11 years old and we're down on Dunstan's riverside in Gateshead and we're open seven days a week
00:42and we serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and evening meals. We're open late on Friday and Saturday.
00:48We're very much a community focused café and have a great customer, like loyal customer base as well.
00:54Within the café, we also have a retail shop section. We sell local art products and gifts.
01:01We try to source those locally from the local talent and on the walls as well,
01:07we display different artworks that are for sale and we try and change and mix that up as much as possible
01:12to give different people opportunity. At the moment on the walls, it's all from Brazilian artists
01:18because we have the Brazilian celebration week on, so it's all linked in with that theme.
01:23So this week, we've got Brazilian Energy Week. It's all about celebrating different communities and cultures within the North East
01:30and the different talent here. We've always done pop-up programmes and different events where we've brought different cuisines to our customers.
01:37But for this, we wanted it to be more of a week-long celebration that encompass dance, craft, art, music and food.
01:48So throughout the week, we've got different dance classes on. Wednesday night, we've got a samba class.
01:53Thursday night, we've got another Brazilian fit class. Friday, we've got a kids' carnival mask-making workshop in the afternoon.
02:01Friday night, we've got some free live music with a Brazilian-beamed burger night.
02:06Sunday, we've got some free live music as well in the glass room on Sunday afternoon.
02:11But Saturday is like the main party and we're going to have capoeira, dancers and performers,
02:18samba dancer, all with a kit on and feathers and everything.
02:23We've got a live Brazilian band and we've got a DJ playing Brazilian music later on in the evening.
02:29And we've also got the Brazilian bakery, which is going to serve some beautiful Brazilian authentic traditional food as well.
02:37And it came from this idea of trying to get different communities to appreciate each other and understand each other a little bit more.
02:46And we all sample different cultures and cuisines without even knowing it, whether that be like food or music or dance.
02:54So it's just highlighting one particular country or culture.
