Undefeated Lightweight contender Devin Haney takes on Mason Menard in the main event of Shobox The New Generation
Transcript
00:00...vision between the very talented Devin Haney and a very big punching Mason Menard.
00:11Mason Menard came to Showbox in 2016.
00:15Despite what at that point was a 31-fight pro career, he was somewhat of a mystery.
00:20Menard had spent his career in relative obscurity, fighting almost solely in small towns in his native Louisiana.
00:27He made his national TV debut against undefeated Yudi Bernardo, the Dominican Republic lightweight champion,
00:35and scored what was chosen as the most dramatic one-punch knockout in Showbox history.
00:43Menard followed that win with another TKO on Showbox when he beat Baha Mabijanov four months later.
00:49That was the knockout to remember against Bernardo.
00:58Yudi Bernardo came and went very quickly.
01:02After the Mabijanov fight, it got him as a last-minute replacement against Ray Beltran.
01:07Menard killed himself to make weight in that fight, and he was stopped in a seventh round.
01:11Beltran, now a world titleist in the lightweight division.
01:14Menard won a comeback fight in March of last year, but he tore his rotator cuff and a biceps muscle, which required surgery.
01:21So tonight, the 29-year-old making his return after a 14-month layoff.
01:27Steve, let's go behind the numbers.
01:29Rock-hard, mighty Mason Menard.
01:32Well, long time gone.
01:33Menard hasn't fought in 14 months the longest layoff of his career.
01:37Will there be rust?
01:38Will his timing be affected?
01:39The Peter Principle.
01:41After scoring two big KOs on Showbox, Menard moved up and got stopped by Beltran, as Barry said, who's now a world titlist.
01:48Was that evidence that Menard isn't world class?
01:51And bang, bang.
01:52Menard has 24 KOs in 35 fights for a decent KO percentage of 686.
01:57Numbers aside, he's a dangerous puncher.
01:59That's a good thing, because he may need a KO tonight.
02:02And here is the highly touted prospect, Devin Haney.
02:22He had 138 emitter fights, and he won multiple youth and junior national championships.
02:27Haney, though, is unwilling to wait for a run at the Olympics, so he turned pro at 17, fighting in Mexico.
02:34Now at 19 years of age, he is already a two-and-a-half-year pro, fighting nine times in 2016, seven more times in 2017.
02:43He's trained by his father, William.
02:45He works out of the Mayweather gym in Las Vegas.
02:48Floyd Mayweather Sr. has been an advisor from day one.
02:51Haney has a fluid, fast, graceful style, akin to a Mayweather Jr. or a Roy Jones Jr., but has yet to face any adversity in his young career.
03:01Asked to describe himself, he says, I have speed, I have power, I am very explosive, I can box, I can bang, I can do everything.
03:09Tonight, though, he takes a big step up in the caliber of the opponent.
03:13So, Steve, still behind the numbers with Devin Haney.
03:16Devin Haney comes in to the rapper E-40, and we start with, smells like teen spirit.
03:23Haney's at 18 pro bouts, pretty impressive for a fighter who turned 19 half a year ago.
03:28Ten of those 18 fights, as Barry alluded to it, were in Mexico.
03:32No monsters.
03:34Given his tender age, it's not surprising that Haney has faced a string of underwhelming opponents.
03:38That's about to change.
03:40And finally, power plays.
03:4112 KOs in 18 fights is okay, but Haney is patient in the ring.
03:45He relies more on technique and speed than pure power.
03:49All right, that's the setup for our main event of the evening here at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.
03:55Devin Haney versus Mason Menard.
03:58Ten rounds in the lightweight division.
04:01Let's take you once more to the center of the ring for the introduction of the fighters.

05:22And controlling the action at the sound of the bell, the referee in charge is Gary Rosato.
05:29And now, once again, live from South Philadelphia, 10 rounds for the USBA lightweight championship.
05:39Ladies and gentlemen, it's go time!
05:44On Showtime!
05:48Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner.
05:51He weighed in at 134 and one quarter pounds.
05:55His impressive professional record includes 33 victories.
05:59Against only two defeats, 24 wins by way of knockout.
06:03Wearing white, red, and blue.
06:05And hailing from Reign, Louisiana.
06:09He's the former WBO, NABO lightweight champion.
06:14Please welcome rock hard, mighty Mason Menard!
06:22This undefeated opponent is across the ring, fighting out of the red corner.
06:29He weighed in at 134 and three quarter pounds.
06:32As a professional, he has 18 bouts.
06:3718 victories.
06:3812 coming by way of knockout.
06:41Wearing red with white.
06:44Fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, by way of Oakland, California.
06:48He is the WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion.
06:52Ladies and gentlemen, Devin, the Dream Haney!
07:06Devin!
07:10Now, peace.
07:11Now, peace.
07:12All right, ladies and gentlemen, Devin, I gave you specific detail.
07:14Instruction in the locker room.
07:15I'm only going to tell you two things.
07:16Protect yourselves at all times, and most importantly, will be my commands at all times.
07:20Touch, close, bang at the bell.
07:22God bless.
07:24We're ready to go.
07:25The boxers had to re-weigh in this morning.
07:29Haney came in at 143.
07:30Menard, 137 and three quarters.
07:32So Haney is most definitely the bigger man in the ring right now.
07:36Rules of the unified rules.
07:38No standing eight count, no three knocked down.
07:39Only the ref can stop the fight.
07:40Friday cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
07:42And the fight becomes official after four rounds, Mr. Tompkins.
07:46Thank you very much, Mr. Farhood.
07:48Joined also by Mr. Marquez.
07:51We're so formal.
07:52We are.
07:54Round one of this ten-round fight, great test for Devin Haney, and a chore for Mason Menard.
08:05This is a huge, like I said, step-up for Devin Haney.
08:09I don't think he's ever fought any bad life.
08:10It's tough to do that.
08:11When he hits Mason Menard, he's someone else going to be, he's going to hit back.
08:15He's not going to be like the other opponents.
08:16Amateur experience.
08:18Haney won the junior national title, I think, seven times.
08:21He won the seventh time when he was only six, so I don't know how that worked.
08:25But anyway, Menard, also an excellent amateur, fought in the 08 trials, Olympic trials.
08:29And pro experience, you see, obviously, Menard with a lot more rounds, a lot more bouts.
08:34And Haney only turning pro a couple of years ago.
08:37Menard, the definitive small-town guy from Moraine, Louisiana, nice double jab by Haney, snapped the head of Menard back.
08:44Nice, sharp, fast jab by Haney.
08:48He's got the speed.
08:49He's got all the good, yes.
08:52And everybody you talk to who has seen him in the gym says the guy is special.
08:57And in the first minute of this fight, I haven't seen anything to tell me he's not.
09:02Well, I was talking to BJ Flores earlier tonight, the cruiserweight contender, and he knows Haney very well.
09:08And he said the kid works as hard as anybody and is as skilled as anybody.
09:12That's coming from BJ Flores.
09:14Now, who does that sound like?
09:14Sounds like Floyd Mayweather, doesn't it?
09:16Yeah, it does.
09:16It's a little early for that comparison, obviously, but not in Haney's mind.
09:21Menard did get there with a left hand.
09:23It's been all Haney other than that left hand, though, here in this first round.
09:27Long jab from Haney.
09:28Very quick jab.
09:30Side-to-side movement.
09:32A little bit too fast for Macy Menard so far.
09:41And he told us he thinks Menard will just look to load up on one shot.
09:44He does have one punch knocked on a bull.
09:49He took a left hand from Haney right there.
09:51Yeah, that's the second time that Haney has landed a lead left hook.
09:55He's rocked Menard with it.
09:56Makes it Menard a little bit too slow on his feet.
10:00He's got to be a little bit more faster with his footwork.
10:02He's got to get there fast and put some fear in this young kid.
10:06He's only been able to get off once here in this first round.
10:12Haney's staying at long range, peppering him with the jab.
10:16Nice combination from Haney.
10:18Beautiful.
10:19Got a quick left hand.
10:20A reminder, Haney, excuse me, Menard off a long layoff and shoulder surgery.
10:30Again, a nice combination from Haney.
10:32He's out of there before Menard's counter.
10:34Had a beautiful jab of me.
10:43For Haney, this is like a systematic process, you know.
10:46Good jab.
10:47Good defense.
10:48He's got to be consistent every round.
10:50Keeps doing this.
10:51He's going to win the fight.
10:52Easy.
10:53He's going to dominate the fight if he does.
10:55Yeah, right.
10:55We talked to both fighters.
11:01Here's what they had to say about how they need to win the fight.
11:04Here first is Devin Haney.
11:07I'm going to come in.
11:08I'm going to use my jab, use my feints.
11:10You know, see what he has early.
11:13But, you know, capitalize on everything.
11:17I'm going to let my hands go.
11:19Set him up.
11:20The whole time I'm going to be setting him up for big shots.
11:22And I look to eventually knock him out.
11:25Haney is a good, young, slick counter puncher.
11:33The way I'm going to capitalize on him is the pot shots he tries to throw.
11:40Leaner in right hands.
11:42Them uppercuts.
11:44His jab.
11:45I'm going to be defensively sound.
11:47I'm going to get around him.
11:49And I'm going to take him out.
11:51Well, that first round, no pot shots.
11:54No.
11:54Yeah, and Mason and Arden can't find a solution what to do with the speed.
11:59So far, it's the speed factor.
12:01And I did tell him in the fighter minutes, you know, you really don't know how good a fighter is
12:05and how much speed he's got until you get inside the ring.
12:07Because I've had that experience.
12:08And that's what's happening right now, so far.
12:10Well, a 19-year-old schooled the older fighter in that first round.
12:1513 jabs connected for Haney in round one.
12:22Oh, walked right into an uppercut.
12:28Well, Menard's going to have to...
12:29It's pretty clear that Menard's going to have to take a lot of punches to get close enough to land one.
12:34Will he land one, and will there be any effect if he does?
12:39That's a lot.
12:40That's a lot to ask.
12:41Menard is too stationary.
12:42He's not giving any fades, any head movement.
12:46A little short with that hook.
12:47You know, when you have athleticism like Haney...
12:52Wow.
12:53That just was a little short, that right hand.
12:57That could have ended things.
12:58But when you have athleticism like him, and quick feet, and balance,
13:03that's a very tough combination to overcome for his opponent.
13:10Seems to always be unbalanced to Men.
13:12Yes.
13:12Very quick.
13:14I love his focus.
13:15Look at his eyes.
13:16I'm talking about Haney.
13:18I mean, for a young kid, all this pressure, 19 years old.
13:23Where did he come so from?
13:25I'm impressed.
13:26Very good movement.
13:27Look at it.
13:27Nice combination.
13:29Three punch.
13:33A jab.
13:33There's a strong jab, too.
13:35It's not just a show-me jab.
13:36And Haney's been very, very smart in jabbing.
13:51Moving his feet after every single jab.
13:54Mostly to his left.
13:55Mostly lateral movement.
13:56Hard to counter that if the guy's going to jab and move.
13:59Now, he can't follow with power shots as easily if he's moving away.
14:03But he's still scoring shots.
14:05And one thing I don't like, I talked to his dad about this earlier tonight.
14:08He boxes with his mouth open.
14:09Oh, he does.
14:09Good right hand again.
14:12Didn't really set down on that right hand.
14:14And he's still jarred.
14:16I think Haney's doing a little bit too much movement.
14:18If he would just sit down a little bit here and there with them sharp counters,
14:22he'll be more effective and do more damage.
14:24Because he's catching Mason Menard all the time with any counter.
14:29Look at that.
14:29Well, he said he was going to do that.
14:31Show him the jab early.
14:32Be quick.
14:32Give him a lot of movement.
14:33He's done just that.
14:35He's hitting and he's not being hit.
14:37And the last time I looked, that was the name of the game in this sport.
14:39Yep.
14:44Nice combination again.
14:4610 seconds.
14:47Let's put it out.
14:48Let's put it out.
14:49Let's put it out.
14:53Okay.
15:09Somebody step down, please.
15:10Somebody step down.
15:10We'll rotate.
15:11Somebody step down, please.
15:14You got plenty of air in that tank.
15:27You got plenty of air in that tank.
15:31I know.
15:31I know.
15:32But listen, keep changing the directions.
15:34Keep changing the directions.
15:35All right.
15:36Keep confusing.
15:37Right.
15:37Keep that stick on him.
15:38You're beautiful, baby.
15:39You're beautiful.
15:40This is what you want to do.
15:40The world is possible.
15:41Okay.
15:42All right.
15:42But stop him late, though.
15:44Stop him late.
15:44Don't be jammed right up in the book.
15:46Keep it up.
15:54Round three of a fight that has been absolutely dominated thus far by Devin Haney.
15:58See Bill Haney, his dad in his corner.
16:03Bill Haney's helped teach his kid how to fight, but also doing a lot of other teaching because
16:08the kid was homeschooled.
16:10That's right.
16:10Very bright kid, very nice kid, and respectful of the past, you know, in the feature we ran
16:19a couple of fights ago, he mentioned Charlie Burley.
16:22The fact that he even knows who Charlie Burley is, has won me over.
16:26Charlie Burley, one of the great fighters in history who never fought for a world title.
16:32He's learning from all these guys, and he's very proud of the fact that he says, I don't
16:36really have a style.
16:36I borrow a little bit from this guy, a little bit of that guy.
16:38And even when it has to do with trainers, if you saw in the corner, how they switch, whoever's
16:45going to go up there.
16:46I know one of the guys in there is Mike McCallum, the body snatcher.
16:49Yeah.
16:50Obviously he has him there against his body shots.
16:53But so far Haney, I mean, he's doing an excellent job of staying off the ropes.
16:57He's got really good footwork.
16:59Excellent moxing IQ.
17:02I'd be interested to know what he, between rounds there, he leaned over Worsford and his dad's
17:06here, and his dad kind of agreed with him and said, you'll get him later, you'll get
17:10him later.
17:10I think what I heard was he told his daddy doesn't, he really can't hit.
17:15His dad said, you're doing great, you're doing goodly, but try to get him out of them
17:19in the later rounds.
17:19But he won Tanaka, because the whole world's watching.
17:22Right.
17:22They don't watch it, and you take care of business in the later rounds.
17:26Well, he told us winning wasn't good enough.
17:30This is a kid who's 19, making his move up, and he's talking about fighting for a world title
17:34in his next fight.
17:35Yeah.
17:35He's a little ambitious.
17:37I don't care how good he looks tonight.
17:39A little bit of an ambitious move, you know, but that's good for his confidence.
17:46Based on these first two and a half rounds, I got to say, we talked about the fact that
17:50he bite off more than he could chew.
17:52I'd say he's chewing it.
17:54Yeah.
17:55Now, Menard really doesn't have a choice, but to keep attacking, which means he's going
17:58to put himself in range as he gets hit by right here and there.
18:02He's got no choice, Menard.
18:03I mean, I think Haney is breaking him down physically and mentally with that sharp counterpunch
18:09and throwing lots of punches, and you see that makes a guy like Mason Menard more hesitant.
18:16Yeah.
18:16Every time Haney does that, lands with counterpunches, fast, explosive, makes Mason Menard more hesitant.
18:25He's scared to throw because he's going to get hit.
18:27Yeah.
18:27And that's what's happening.
18:28Menard, I don't believe, has had a meaningful punch in this fight.
18:34No, he just landed on the left hook to the body.
18:35It's the first punch I've seen that he's even scored.
18:37Look at him.
18:38He can't land that shot.
18:40I mean, right now, Devin Haney is making Mason Menard look very slow.
18:43Yeah.
18:44And ponderous.
18:45Nice little hand there.
18:46He turned up the pan well.
18:47Keep saying this, Menard just keep running like he's too slow on his feet, like he's stuck in mud.
19:04You're missing the hook because he's stepping back, okay?
19:08Change it into a jab.
19:10It's going to be there.
19:12You're looking for all head shots.
19:14Punch him in the chest.
19:15Look for a big target so you can start to slow him down a little.
19:18He doesn't look as fast, man.
19:19I know he's fast, but listen, you're just as fast.
19:22You just got to put your head in his chest.
19:24Make him a little uncomfortable.
19:26If you hit him with a few body shots, he'll start to slow down.
19:29We knew he was going to come out hot for three rounds, okay?
19:31You have taken his body in the best he has.
19:35He cannot take your best.
19:37There's no way he can do that.
19:39Don't you think that?
19:40Right here.
19:40Punch him here.
19:41Punch him here.
19:42That'll take the speed away.
19:43Okay?
19:44You've got to find him here.
19:44That might have been the most profound statement of the fight.
19:50He's fast, man.
19:51Yeah, I didn't like that body language with Mason and Argyle saying that he's fast, man.
19:55Yeah.
19:56Well, I mean, you've got to do something.
19:58You've got to figure it out.
20:00Well, Nathan Pippitone in the corner telling him,
20:02you've got to put your head in his chest.
20:05But what kind of price do you pay?
20:07Yeah.
20:07He's not even trying to do that.
20:09He's not standing there long enough so you could do that.
20:15We're only around, what is this, four?
20:17Four, yeah.
20:18I want to see if what Raul said earlier comes true, which is Will Haney stand and fight more
20:24in the pocket after he thinks, at least, that he's worn Menard down.
20:27I bet he does.
20:29That'll be interesting to see.
20:30As I think he wants the knockout.
20:35Nice combination.
20:36And then Menard misses with the left hand.
20:38So two-punch combination.
20:40And then Haney was out of there.
20:41As Larry Hayden so eloquently put it years ago,
20:52you make your opponent drunk before you mug him.
20:55That's right.
20:55And that's what Haney's trying to do right now.
20:57That's right.
20:59Watch the elbow.
21:00Watch that elbow.
21:00I mean, if you walked in here and you saw this kid fight,
21:04would you say he's 19 years old?
21:06No.
21:06Absolutely not.
21:08He's got the face of a 15-year-old.
21:09He's a baby face.
21:11He's young.
21:12But the kid could fight, I think,
21:14stayed off far with all the tough guys,
21:15Jesse Vargas, Sean Porter.
21:18A lot of experience again from smart guys like that.
21:21Well, Menard landed one power shot that seems to be invigorated.
21:27He's not cutting off the ring, but Menard is not.
21:29He's following him straightforward.
21:31Running right into his shots.
21:33Menard needs to forget about the head shots.
21:40He needs to...
21:42I'm going to call it...
21:42You know I call it the Georgia Benton, the late Georgia Benton.
21:45Just hit him anywhere.
21:46Hit him on the shoulders, hit him on the body, hit him on the chest.
21:49Aim for the chest.
21:51Not going to hit him in the face right now.
21:55I'm not even hit him in the face at all.
21:56Yeah, Menard's busier, and even if he's not landing,
22:00he's stopping Haney from landing as much,
22:02especially with the jab,
22:03which is a step in the right direction.
22:17If Menard can stay mentally in the fight
22:20and not get discouraged,
22:21he has to take the attitude of a veteran,
22:23which is the second half of the fight is mine.
22:25I'm the veteran.
22:25I've been longer.
22:27He's got to have that attitude
22:29and not get discouraged.
22:31I get frustrated.
22:32A style like this
22:33will get you frustrated.
22:38You've got to keep working.
22:39You've got to keep tagging him.
22:40You've got to keep on him.
22:41Keep pressing him.
22:42Don't let him think.
22:44Ten seconds.
22:45Ten seconds.
22:46It's in the belt.
22:49I want to see more body shots by Mason.
22:53Five, six, five, six, five, six.
22:56We've got to keep getting stood.
22:56We've got to keep going.
23:01We've got to keep walking.
23:01We've got to keep walking.
23:05We've got to be walking.
23:05Sit down and chew on my last overnight and get a grammatical team.
23:09Who's wearing a bikini?
23:10Oh, go, go.
23:12Take care.
23:14There.
23:15rand, big grab.
23:17Come here.
23:21Good good.
23:21You're in the truck.
23:22That was a great hook that you landed, you got his attention, okay?
23:32Double the feint up, and he's moving into your right hand.
23:36Listen, think about when you shoot a gun.
23:38I want you to punch to where he's going.
23:40He's starting to run from you, punch to him, okay?
23:43Play the averages, shoot to where he's going.
23:45Round five, round five.
23:52Round five of this ten-round fight.
23:57Through four rounds, Haney, 39, connects with jabs, Menard, four.
24:02That tells you the story of the fight.
24:05Menard got a little closer to him in the last round,
24:08but still wasn't able to do any damage.
24:16Mason's got to go in with a fast, a little fast touch-and-jab.
24:19Touch-and-jab to get him inside.
24:21Then you go to work in the inside.
24:27Haney now a combination of the knee buckled.
24:31And Menard.
24:33That's that counter uppercut.
24:35Counter uppercut by Haney.
24:37It's coming.
24:42There he goes.
24:43There it is.
24:44I don't know if Haney behind it.
24:46Uh-huh.
24:47He knows how to follow up.
24:48He's baiting him in.
24:49He's baiting him in.
24:50Well, that's the thing.
24:51He's a very savvy fighter for a kid.
24:55He's a very savvy fighter for a kid.
24:58Well, that's the thing.
24:59He's a very savvy fighter for a kid.
25:02He's going in.
25:03Here.
25:04He's got me!
25:05He's going.
25:06Here.
25:07Here, here, here.
25:08Here, here, here.
25:09A few wild punches he's thrown at this point.
25:18Nancy Pipitone told Menard, if he's moving into your right hand,
25:22throw that right hand the same punch that knocked Udi Bernardo out.
25:26Trouble is, Haynes moving left and right.
25:29Backward and forward.
25:31Mostly laterally.
25:34Faded to the body, then came up with the left hand and the right hand behind it.
25:44Punch out, punch out, punch out.
25:46He just really fights like a much more mature fighter than a guy who's 19 years old.
25:52Good body shot with the left hand there.
25:55Another one missed the right hand over the top.
26:04I think Mason's trying to get confused and discouraged, frustrated.
26:17Look at that jab, I mean, off balance.
26:19Then he comes with the right hand and he attacks underneath.
26:22Gets a rise out of the crowd here.
26:25Yeah, there's some Floyd Mayweather in him and there's some Roy Jones in him.
26:28He comes with style.
26:35Maybe those are those pot shots he was talking about.
26:38I think so.
26:43Gets a rise out of the crowd.
26:44Haney, 10 seconds!
26:45He's putting it back.
26:46Haney, 3-0!
26:47Haney!
27:00Dominant performance.
27:01Our halftime report.
27:03Jabs.
27:04Haney sticking to that jab and landed quite a few.
27:08power punch is interestingly pretty close 39 to 32 and body shots well Haney's
27:16been moving a lot so he hasn't landed too many to the body either as Menard so
27:22it's been the jab but Haney has landed some lead power shots as well the hooks
27:28in the right hand you saw hook there in round one
27:32it mixes in a nice uppercut a counter uppercut in round two there's the right
27:37hand so there's really no punch we haven't seen although the jab has been
27:40dominant third round double triples the jab
27:48around five that's got to be discouraging for Menard when you try to come forward
27:52and eat three shots up that let's see if Haney doesn't get on the gas a little bit
27:59here and try to close the deal well this is the second half of the fight this
28:05where Mason Menard needs to make some changes he's gonna adapt more and take
28:11take over try to bum rush him
28:18throw more punches so far nothing is working just the speed speed factor he
28:24just can't deal with it
28:27yeah he's right now yeah Menard has not been able to make it a physical fight
28:32which is really his only chance
28:34I mean Haney doesn't even get in positions where where he could get you
28:45know Menard can get rough with him and force him and push him and manhandle him
28:51his lateral movement is excellent both ways Mason Menard is the full-grown man in
28:57there and he's just a teenager yeah a young man is still having developed into a
29:03full-grown man he was waiting for that counter uppercut just missed
29:08he's trying this move again where he landed where he sways to the left sways to the right
29:16that pops that right hand yeah I think he's that time he's having fun in there I think he's he's
29:22experimenting yeah not everything he's trying is working but a lot of it is I just wish he
29:30closed his mouth he gets hit on the chin someday you know what's gonna happen
29:34now what the second half of this fight's all about for me and watching Amy who's in total control
29:54does he slow down does his technique suffer at all doesn't look like it's hope one
30:00no so far not in round six yeah he looks like round number one there to be
30:04good right hand force Menard into the works
30:08he's sitting down he's sitting down more than the shot now he's not giving it as much
30:13as much as he's not giving it as much as he's not giving it as much as he's not giving it
30:20to the right hand again yeah sign that the end could be coming would be if Menard starts
30:24backing up consistently now he's back on the attack and effectively however
30:29not making that happen
30:32so
30:36yeah
30:39yeah
30:42yeah
30:44yeah
30:48yeah
30:53yeah
30:56yeah
30:57Huh? He's got to blow his nose.
31:09You got it?
31:10Yes.
31:11Do you want to go?
31:17How are you feeling?
31:18Good.
31:19Okay.
31:20I know.
31:21But listen, you can if you stop looking for the perfect punch.
31:24Punch him in the arms, punch him in the chest.
31:27You got a jab.
31:29Okay?
31:30Or you got to rush in and clinch him and fight from the clinch.
31:33Okay?
31:34Listen, you can still win this fight.
31:37All that shit that we was working on, everything is dead.
31:40See my right hand?
31:41The right hand.
31:42You come back with your hook.
31:43You might go to sleep.
31:44You might go to sleep.
31:45All right, baby.
31:54All right.
31:57Go, man.
32:00Go.
32:01Go, man.
32:02Go get him!
32:03The right hand?
32:05Push!
32:07Pish!
32:08Oh!
32:10Well, is this Groundhog's Day,
32:22or can Menard do something different?
32:24I don't see it happening.
32:25No, I think we're at four more weeks of winter.
32:27At the start, I talked about the fact
32:48that Haney picks his shots.
32:50He's more of a boxer than pure puncher.
32:52The only thing missing right now from this performance,
32:55which has been pretty eye-opening,
32:57would be some kind of finish.
33:00Right.
33:00I think he'd like that.
33:02Be nice.
33:05Just missed with that right hand.
33:07But even up until now, if he doesn't knock him out,
33:10I mean, he's put on a great performance.
33:14He's dominating.
33:14Absolutely.
33:23At the end of the last round, Haney landed
33:25a nice left hook to the body.
33:26That's one thing we've seen very little of
33:28and might be why Menard is still here.
33:30Very little body puncher.
33:32Now, of course, he's been controlling the fight on the outside.
33:34It's not that easy to land big body shots consistently from the outside,
33:38but that's something that we have not seen a lot of.
33:40And I'm trying to be critical.
33:42There's just not a lot to be critical of.
33:43No, there's not.
33:44No, absolutely not.
33:46And this is, remember, this is by far his toughest opponent.
33:50Oh, by a mile.
33:51Yes.
33:51And he was on the gas, literally, right at the opening bell.
33:57I mean, he never allowed Menard in this fight, not for an instant.
34:01And Menard's really not mixing his approach up much
34:12because he can't.
34:14He's not quicker.
34:16He's not faster.
34:16That was a left-hand for Menard.
34:20That was some Rojo move by Haney.
34:34I didn't do a lot in this round, but he doesn't have to.
34:45Right here, baby.
34:55Right here.
34:56Let's go.
35:00You got to wake up.
35:03Listen, I know he's there.
35:05Okay, you're taking his best shot.
35:07Did he hurt you?
35:08Yeah.
35:08You got to hit him back.
35:10Okay?
35:11I know you are.
35:12Just listen.
35:13Close the distance for him.
35:14Fight ugly.
35:15Dirty box him.
35:16Get inside.
35:17Do whatever you can.
35:18Grab him.
35:18Hold him.
35:19Punch him with one hand.
35:20Okay?
35:21But if you don't come in behind the jab, you're not going to be able to hit him.
35:25He's dancing all over the place.
35:27Or you got to decide to just chuck one back after he lands one because he's standing directly
35:32in front of you.
35:32Okay?
35:33What do you got, Maurice?
35:33Make sure you stay cold.
35:36Go behind yourself.
35:37It's still there.
35:38It's still there.
35:40Let's go, baby.
35:41So this is round eight of this ten-round fight, a fight that has been dominated right from
35:51the opening bell by 19-year-old Devin Haney.
35:53Trying to make it 19 wins in a row as a professional.
35:56What we're not seeing in this fight is Haney having to overcome any adversity.
36:08No, no.
36:09It was interesting when we asked him yesterday, do you look forward to a time when you will
36:13have to overcome adversity because every great fighter does that?
36:16He said, hell no.
36:17No.
36:18Yes.
36:18I don't want to have to overcome adversity.
36:19I hope I'm 50 and people are still questioning whether I can overcome adversity.
36:23That's probably the smartest attitude to take.
36:26And so far in this fight, nothing.
36:28No adversity.
36:29Nothing.
36:29nothing.
36:31I expected it, but I don't think it's going to happen.
36:38I thought Medard at least would be able to hit him at least once.
36:48I think Mason, he's done.
36:52It's just more of a look.
36:54You know what?
36:54I'm going to go a distance.
36:55I'm not going to get knocked out.
36:56He said he didn't really hit hard in the corner.
36:58He kept saying, I'm trying, but it's too fast.
37:03I think he's mentally broke down.
37:05He's going to be satisfied with just, look,
37:07I'm going to go two more, three more rounds
37:09and just end the fight, not get knocked out.
37:11Took a shot right there.
37:13Right hand, looping right hand.
37:15Break, break!
37:22Among the other things that Haney might be accomplishing tonight,
37:25he's never been past eight.
37:26Menard's been 12.
37:31Left hand.
37:37Well, what do you think about the idea that Haney's 19,
37:40he doesn't have his man strength yet?
37:42Is there something to that saying?
37:44I think so.
37:45I mean, that's why, that was one of the factors
37:47why I thought Mason Menard would do something
37:50because he's a full-grown man.
37:53And if you look at Haney, he's still developing.
37:56He's a teenager, so, I mean, look what he's doing now in this fight.
38:00Can you imagine when he turns 20, 21, 22,
38:03and he's really developing into a real man
38:06and gets that man's strength?
38:08The sky's the limit, I think.
38:09I mean, I'm really impressed though for him.
38:13Let's go back!
38:14Let's go back!
38:14Go back!
38:19Got the left hand.
38:21Production has slowed from a Haney,
38:25but still as effective.
38:26Keep her!
38:34There's a chopping right hand, pretty good shot.
38:45A wild right hand here at throwing from his pick.
38:48Listen, you've got to launch that right hand.
39:06He's walking right in.
39:08Listen to me, alright?
39:10I'm going to let you finish the fight, but if he keeps beating you like he did that round,
39:15we should stop the fight.
39:17Listen, I know you're trying your best.
39:19He's going to walk into your right hand.
39:21There's no sense in us getting hurt for what?
39:23You know what I mean?
39:24You got one more in you?
39:25We'll see how you can go.
39:27I know you got both of them, but listen.
39:29If you can't let the right hand go, there's no sense in us continuing, okay?
39:33Look at that jab open and walk him to it.
39:39So we are ready for round number nine here,
39:42and the fight has been pretty much the same right from the opening bell,
39:46and that is a dominant performance by Devin Haney.
39:49Yeah, no need to ask what our scorecards are.
39:51No.
39:52This is one that I feel quite confident everybody's going to see the same way.
39:55Now, you still see Haney doing a lot of lateral movement here.
39:58Yes.
39:59Using a lot of lateral movement.
40:00Is it too much?
40:01Well, that's something that we talked about earlier.
40:05That's something that I think that he's going to learn.
40:08You know, we're going to learn from fights.
40:10I think if he sat down more, just a little bit,
40:13just not so much unnecessary movement,
40:15he would add more power to his shots and be more effective,
40:20be, you know, hurt, put more hurt on his opponent.
40:23Yeah.
40:24Yeah.
40:25That's what I'm thinking,
40:26because he's landed so many clean shots.
40:29Would he land even more,
40:30and would they have more of an effect if he were a little more flat-footed?
40:33And he's accurate with every shot he throws.
40:35Yeah, he is.
40:36Uppercut there.
40:37He said, it looks like he's sitting down a little bit more.
40:39Oh.
40:40See right there?
40:41He's not moving a lot.
40:42He throws his shots at some different angles, though,
40:44like that uppercut.
40:45Yeah, that's what he's.
40:46That's, I mean, he's very elusive.
40:48That's what makes him so hard to hit.
40:51Mason can't, he can't find him.
40:53He thinks he's got him, but then he's not there anymore.
40:56It's, it's frustrating to fight a guy with that kind of stuff.
41:00For anybody.
41:02That jab is just there all day.
41:15Speed can mesmerize you, can hypnotize you.
41:17That's what's happened to Mason in Ireland's fight.
41:19Exactly.
41:20You see that there are long stretches where he just stands in front of Hayden,
41:22doesn't do anything,
41:24because he knows if he tries to do anything,
41:26he's going to be out quick and he's going to get hit.
41:28Yeah, he's hesitant.
41:30All done.
41:47And a good jab.
41:53strong jab 70 jabs to eight wow that tells the story yeah yeah and 30 doesn't sound that high
42:03but when you've thrown 230 landing 30 is good enough yeah well you know this is our first
42:11look at devon haney and he's doing what he needs to do for sure he's shining brilliant boxing it
42:18just makes you want to see the future happen a little faster absolutely who's he going to fight
42:24next when is he going to have that breakthrough fight when he's going to fight for a title well
42:27i got to think he's not far away from the breakthrough fight this round i think he's
42:32really sitting down morning shots yeah i think he's trying more in front of him and he's looking
42:36for the knockout did he get hit with that right hand he slipped it i think he slipped it
42:48no no we're done we're done listen we're stopping we're good they're gonna stop the fight listen we
43:00just couldn't catch him you did it listen we have we have one camp we're only going to get better from
43:05here i am super proud you did a great job and that's going to do it and that'll be a ninth round
43:11no sense in you we got too many off and really there's no reason to go on with this i don't know
43:18i think i would have let menard fight another round i didn't see him rocked no hey game of the
43:22kale he gave him the stop yeah stop it i mean i mean was he going to win the fight no i get it
43:28i understand that but you know he was game he kept trying as ineffectively as he was as he did but
43:36but we often talk about prospects and one of the signs that a prospect is special is when he
43:51moves up in quality of opposition and wins more easily than you would expect and that's been the
43:57case with a lot of the process we've shown the better ones you know this kid's a teenager off
44:01top of my head i thought of three teenagers we've had on showbox two excelled in one world titles one
44:07diaz a long time ago and david benavidez recently yes panchito bojado was a teenager who didn't make
44:13it from years ago haney looks a lot more like the benavidez diaz category than the uh bojado category
44:22no question let's go out to the center of the ring once more mark frata to make it all official mark
44:28ladies and gentlemen based on information from the blue corner the referee in charge gary
44:33rosado calls for a halt to the contest your official time comes at the end of round number nine your
44:41winner by tko still undefeated and the new usba lightweight champion from las vegas devon the dream
44:57haney
45:11there is your winner devon haney and he wins it by tko as the corner of mason menard stops the fight
45:19before the start of the 10th round and uh we've been talking about him i always ask you steve at this
45:24point to give me a report card and i think there's only one grade that you could give him as we look
45:30at the numbers here yeah absolute domination the power punches do not tell the story of how much he
45:36dominated the jab numbers certainly do and this was a brilliant uh boxing performance
45:41now this is round five we see how fast haney's hands are but more importantly how accurate
45:49and how judicious he isn't picking his punches he can give you these angles throw lead right hands
45:55really nothing he tried didn't work in this fight not too many body shots he was head hunting most of the fight
46:06but really just as impressive as the offense you see is the fact that menard was never able to get
46:12any rhythm going never able to get any pressure going and landed very very few punches
46:18in the game late in the round we were wondering if uh haney would go for the stoppage he was a little
46:23more flat-footed but they see pepetone the trainer calling a halt after nine rounds i didn't love that
46:30move by him i think menard deserved the chance to finish the fight but that doesn't take away from
46:36what haney did tonight in a pretty impressive performance for a 19 year old yeah i don't think
46:42there's any question about it i'll turn to raul marquez here and uh raul i'm sure you had to see
46:47this the same way as steve and i a dominant performance absolutely barry i'm very impressed
46:53by uh devon haney because you know i really thought that mason menard who i'm going to call
46:57a young veteran because he's under 30 years old would put him through different tests but he couldn't
47:02he couldn't find any solutions haney mentally and physically broke him down with his uh footwork with
47:08his speed his movement just uh owning him in the in the in the ring and was dominant he was consistent
47:15every round round number one number two number three was like round number six seven and eight
47:20and it was so bad that you could tell how broke down menard was you know he was lost he had he gave up
47:27on him and even his corner gave up on him they stopped the fight they said we don't there's no solution
47:33to being this kid and uh the sky's the limit he's only going to get better so he stepped up to fight
47:37mason menard tonight now what happens for him he's going to make noises about wanting a championship
47:42fight i think there's probably a step or two to go before we get there yeah i mean i don't think he's
47:46ready for the top 130 135 pounders but he's there i mean the kid like i said he's still a teenager
47:53he's still developing into a full-grown man he's gonna get better he's gonna learn a lot from this
47:58fight he's very confident and uh we're gonna see him this kid will be a champion one day barry for sure
48:04i know he will that was our main event we're gonna see this guy again i don't think there's
48:08any question about it and uh steve i'll ask you the same question i just asked raul uh how far
48:13away is this guy realistically forget the fact that he's 19 years old barry i think he's pretty close
48:19and i think that it would be cheating the kid to move him along too slowly just because he's 19.
48:24this is a very mature fighter you see the style the slickness and the maturity in the ring so i i don't
48:30think it'll be long maybe next time out you take a former champion i mean mason minard was tough he was
48:35a big step up in class what he wasn't was a top 10 lightweight we know that so that's coming pretty
48:41soon maybe even before the year's out for uh for devon haney all right in all a very interesting card
48:46we talk about the main event let's take a look back on our entire evening here our first fight arnold
48:52had guy against adam lopez lopez held his own pretty well but in the end it was a guy who had his hand
49:00raised a guy too physical too strong the fresher fighter and his first fight in the united states
49:06this is certainly a prospect i've said this before a prospect we'd like to see more of our next fight
49:12took place 175 pounds alvin varmall jr was coming down from being a cruiserweight and he got the fight
49:19taken away from him by charles foster it was a mutton jeff backup a matchup and uh varmall tried to
49:27threaten but never really hurt foster foster with the left hands over and under dominated the fight
49:33and then it was joshua greer jr against glenn discern this was a battle early in the fight but
49:38greer soon took hold of the fight he hurt discerned a couple of occasions and finally this stop fight
49:43was stopped in round eight where's the pillow there's the pillow zzz night good night for glenn discern
49:50uh tremendous effort by discern but greer was stronger puncher and the clear winner and then of course our
49:57main event we've talked about it already devin haney absolutely dominant right from the opening bell
50:02against the toughest guy he'd encountered to date in mason menard i don't know what more people would
50:08want this was an absolutely fantastic boxing exhibition hard to believe this kid's 19 now
50:14everybody knows about devin haney well that'll do it for this edition of showbox the new generation
50:19the executive producer of showbox is gordon hall showbox is produced by richard gone and directed
50:26by rick phillips so for steve far hood raul marquez and the best crew in sports television
50:32i'm barry tompkins saying so long from philadelphia
50:49so
51:02so
51:23so
51:25showtime extreme it's more of what you need
