00:00Before he became Jharkhand's most powerful tribal leader, Shibu Surain was a man named in a massacre
00:07and later convicted of murder. In 1975, 11 people were killed in a mob attack in Chirudi. Nine of
00:16them were Muslims. Witnesses claimed Surain led the mob. One gave a dying declaration. Shibu Surain
00:22told us to kill the Muslims. The case dragged on for decades. Surain evaded court summons,
00:27went underground, finally surrendered and was acquitted in 2008, 33 years later, for lack of evidence.
00:38In 2006, he was convicted again, this time for the murder of his former aide, Shashinath Jha,
00:44who allegedly had knowledge of a 1993 bribery deal involving JMM MPs during a no-confidence vote in
00:50Parliament. Surain was sentenced to life in prison. A year later, the Delhi High Court overturned the
00:55conviction that man is now dead.
01:02Surain died on August 4, 2025 at 81. He was Jharkhand's chief minister three times but never completed
01:09a full term. Born in 1944 in present-day Ramgir district, Surain's political career was shaped
01:15by personal tragedy.
01:16His father was allegedly killed by moneylenders when he was 15. He later led tribal uprisings,
01:25fought feudal landlords and co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1973. By the 1990s,
01:31he had become a national player, courted by both the BJP and Congress for his ability to swing
01:36tribal votes.
01:43To his followers, Surain was a tribal icon who defied New Delhi. To critics, he embodied
01:48the compromises and corruption of Indian politics. He formally retired in April 2025, handing over
01:54the JMM to his son, Hemant Surain. But his influence and controversies never left Chharkhand.
