00:00Graham Potter faces a pivotal season at West Ham United as he looks to stamp his identity
00:08and a squad still adjusting to life after the managerial reshuffle last season.
00:14Now for his tactical intelligence and emphasis on squad fluid-based possession football,
00:20Potter now needs to blend his philosophy with the gritty demands of East London
00:24and deliver results quickly.
00:26One of his key challenges will be earning a buy-in from a squad built around counter-attacking principles.
00:33Transitioning into a more expansive style may take time, but patience isn't guaranteed at the London Stadium.
00:40Recruitment will also be under the spotlight with West Ham needing smart additions
00:44to support a shift in approach without losing the steel that kept them competitive.
00:50We caught up with London World's James Jones to get his view on the season ahead
00:55and why Potter's adaptability could define the Hammers' season.
01:01And how confident are you ahead of Graham Potter's first full season in charge?
01:07Because, you know, despite all the pressure of the window of the new season as well,
01:12I mean, it's all sort of shaping up to possibly go quite wrong for West Ham at the moment.
01:17It's not looking incredibly confident from the fans' perspective due to the financial issues as well.
01:23I mean, it's quite a strange time to be a West Ham fan because, you know,
01:28they showed massive investment last summer and then, you know, 12 months into the future
01:33and there's a new manager, there's a new sort of era starting.
01:36It's sort of a complete reset button and one that they are hoping to get right
01:40and then possibly arguably in a worse position than they were 12 months ago.
01:44Well, it's not whether they're hoping to get it right.
01:47It's simply they have to get it right.
01:49It has to, you know, a lot of fans are feeling very, very despondent about it at the moment,
01:54about the situation surrounding the club.
01:56A lot of fans that are currently, as things stand, early July, expecting a relegation battle.
02:03I mean, you consider 18 months ago, we were, you know, not even,
02:06just over two years ago, we were winning a European trophy.
02:09We were playing in Europe for three consecutive years for the first time in the club's history
02:14and everything looked like things were falling in place and, you know,
02:17the club was moving forward.
02:18Finally, not 10 years since we'd moved into the stadium,
02:22which there were promises that went with that about the club improving and competing in Europe.
02:26Finally, we were getting it and now it feels like we've kind of slipped back into West Ham,
02:32you know, competing in the bottom half of the table,
02:35worrying about relegation battles,
02:36not being able to attract certain players in the transfer window.
02:40So, understandably, there's a lot of concern,
02:43but we have to remember that he's still, you know,
02:45we're still a little over a month away from the season starting.
02:49A lot can happen in that time and it's still six, seven weeks before the transfer window closes.
02:54So, you know, personally, I'm not hitting the panic button just yet.
02:59I think, you know, all it takes is three or four signings to happen
03:02and we've got a squad there that is capable of competing.
03:07And, you know, I've got, I still think that Graham Potter can get it right at West Ham.
03:12I think, you know, a lot of people were questioning him last season,
03:15but he'd inherited a David Moyes squad in decline and a Lopetegui squad that was well out of form.
03:23And he had none of it, none of those were his players.
03:25So he had to make do with what he had, a team that was well out of confidence,
03:29well out of form and had been for a long, long time.
03:32And I think when you consider that, I think he actually did quite a good job.
03:37You know, went to Arsenal and won at the Emirates,
03:39went to Man United and won at Old Trafford.
03:41There were some disappointing results where you probably would have expected us
03:44to win games that we didn't.
03:45But that's part of the process when a manager comes in mid-season.
03:48You know, it's not going to, very rarely do managers hit the ground running
03:52and it remained that way.
03:54So I think we have to kind of almost treat Graham Potter as a clean slate
03:58from the beginning of the season.
03:59And I still don't, he won't be able to have just this summer
04:03to build the squad that he wants.
04:05It's going to take a few transfer windows, probably a couple of summers.
04:08But I'm confident that he is the right guy that can get us back
04:12to where we feel like we should be.
04:14But it's not going to happen overnight.
04:17But I can understand the fans' concerns.
04:20And we all know that West Ham fans love a youth player coming through.
04:24We've had so many over the years, so many that have gone on
04:26to achieve unbelievable things in the game.
04:28So it's something that we're very proud of.
04:31And it's good to see that it looks like Graham Potter's kind of buying
04:35into that tradition at the club and giving young players a chance.
04:38And we saw that with Scales last year,
04:40and hopefully we'll see a lot more of it in this coming season.
