00:00Ah, you are here. Welcome, welcome.
00:11I have been eagerly awaiting your arrival.
00:15Allow me to introduce myself. I am the storyteller.
00:21Pleased to make your acquaintance, I should be your guide going forward.
00:25Now then, before we begin our story, there are several things I must bring to your attention.
00:31First, this game uses autosave. The game will automatically save at regular intervals, so you may stop playing at any time.
00:40Saving is a very important element of games. It's the only way to keep your memories in place.
00:45If you do not wish to rely on autosave alone, you can also save manually via the menu.
00:50Next, please look at the upper right of the screen. This is the menu button.
00:57From here, you can check the text log, view useful files, and switch auto mode on and off.
01:02You can also adjust the brightness, volume, and other settings in the options menu.
01:07For instance, if there is a voice you would prefer not to hear, you can mute it by setting the voice volume to zero.
01:13I suggest you check the brightness, controls, and other settings now before going on.
01:17I will explain other essential functions when the time is right.
01:23Ah, there is no one more thing I wish to confirm before we continue.
01:28It would feel strange to go on without knowing your name.
01:31Please, tell me what I may call you.
01:33I see.
01:39Nico B, is it?
01:42Hmm.
01:43Are you certain you wish to be called Nico B?
01:46Oh, how rude of me.
01:48Please, pardon my mistake.
01:50I was sure that's what you said, but it seems I was wrong.
01:53What came over me?
01:55Let me try again.
01:56You wish to be called Nico B.
01:58I see.
02:01Very good.
02:02I seem to have gotten it right this time.
02:05Alright, now that we have been properly introduced, let us begin our story.
02:10Ahem.
02:12From antiquity to present day, regardless of our society and civilization evolve,
02:17death has been a constant presence that none have ever escaped.
02:21Whether it is one's own or that of someone close, death is always a difficult thing to accept.
02:28This is an immutable reality, a value shared by all, no matter the age in which they live.
02:35In fact, oral traditions reflecting people's fears and prayers regarding death still remain.
02:40Ghosts, spirits, and so on.
02:43Similarly, in an attempt to defy death, many curses, rituals, and customs have been born.
02:49From burning spirit incense to summoning the souls of the dead.
02:53Some of those secret arts are still being passed down to this day.
02:58Ah, on that note, Nico B.
03:02This may seem rather abrupt, but...
03:05Is there someone you wish to bring back from the dead?
03:09What if...
03:11What if you had one chance to use the secret art of resurrecting the dead?
03:15Yes, you had the power to bring someone back to life, one and one time only.
03:22What would you do, Nico B?
03:31I see.
03:33Very interesting.
03:35Yes, yes, that's what I thought you would say.
03:38What seems to be the matter?
03:43Ah, you want to know what this box that has been sitting here is?
03:48It's quite the curious thing, isn't it?
03:50This is called a color television.
03:53The world I will be sending you to is full of devices such as this, that do not exist in the age you are from.
03:59In this era, a color of television should be found in nearly every household.
04:04That is not all, for example.
04:07The persons should wish to contact someone while they are out of their home.
04:12They use public telephones like this that can be found all over the city.
04:17Can you imagine what life would be like in such a time?
04:20I'd be thrilled to have you continue this story, Nico B.
04:26After all, that is why you came here, no?
04:31So, let us begin.
04:33I have kept you waiting long enough.
04:36I present to you, Paranorma Sight.
04:39A bizarre tale surrounding the curse known as, The Rite of Resurrection.
04:45A peculiar yarn ensnaring nine men and women in a fierce fight for their lives as it unravels.
04:53Some of the characters appearing within surely share your views on the Rite of Resurrection.
04:57I imagine those who have lost someone dear to them will feel particularly strongly about it,
05:02clinging to it as their last desperate hope.
05:06The first I shall introduce, a man named Shogo Oki, is one of them.
05:10Oh, I wonder what it could be at such a time.
05:20Early this morning, the body of a drowned man was discovered at a park in Sumida City.
05:25Police have identified the body as Shogo Oki, a 25-year-old man who worked at a company in the area.
05:31As signs of a struggle were found, the Sumida police suspect foul play and have launched an investigation.
05:36Oh, excuse me, please pay no mind to what you have just seen.
05:41Goodness, you very nearly saw something that would have spoiled the story.
05:46Just pretend you did not see that.
05:49Let us turn back time, back a smidge, and start again from there.
05:55Do you understand? You saw nothing.
06:00You know nothing.
06:02The Sneak-O-B here with the let's play of Paranorma Sight.
06:24The Seven Mysteries of Honjo.
06:27Yes. You might be wondering, what is this game?
06:31And my answer is I have no freaking clue.
06:35I have no idea what this game is or where it came from.
06:41I'm just as baffled as you are.
06:43Other than this is a game that was apparently developed by Square Enix.
06:46And I will say, just from the beginning of it, it does not feel like one.
06:50This feels like some weird Spike Junisoff shit.
06:53But I was actually told about this from my mods.
06:55We were also told about it from a bunch of penguins.
06:58They were saying that this game was pretty amazing.
07:00So this is how my mods ended up playing it.
07:03And they also confirmed they think the game is pretty amazing.
07:06So then I looked at it and was like, wow, this game seems pretty.
07:10Well, I would say amazing, but pretty interesting.
07:14A very interesting aesthetic.
07:16It is apparently a horror visual novel, but also has lots of puzzle elements.
07:22Similar to other games like Zero Escape, Danganronpa, and AI The Somnium Files.
07:27Well, holy shit, dude.
07:29That sounds like some shit right up my goddamn alley.
07:32Talk dirty to me more, daddy.
07:34Uh, reviews for this game were insanely positive on Steam.
07:38And yeah, it looks interesting.
07:41It does seem like a game that is kind of like right up my alley.
07:45I think what just sort of has me sort of baffled is that I legitimately don't think
07:50I've ever heard of this game before.
07:51I don't think I even knew this game was ever coming out.
07:54And I say I don't think because maybe it was shown during like a Nintendo Direct or something
07:59and it just never stuck with me.
08:00But I really do not remember this game ever being like announced or touched upon.
08:05It was just kind of dropped here.
08:08I will say that little intro segment was quite interesting.
08:11It's got me a little, uh, intrigued, I will say.
08:15But yeah, I will say it's been a fucking hot minute since I played a horror, like,
08:19visual novel-esque game.
08:21It's just honestly freaking Corpse Party.
08:23And I will say I'm at least glad to see that this game's, uh, aesthetic is definitely not
08:27nearly as horny, seeming, as Corpse Party.
08:31But I'm looking at right out the, right out the intro, we're like getting like already this
08:35weird kind of meta fourth wall breaking stuff.
08:37And by the way, I was seeing reviews say the best way to experience this game is knowing
08:42as little about it as possible.
08:43So I guess we're sort of, uh, approaching this with the right mindset.
08:46But I will also say just, I think the other reason why I'm deciding to let's play this
08:51game specifically is because this sort of like situation here is very similar to another situation
08:58that happened not that long ago where I ended up playing a game that I didn't know much about.
09:02And I ended up fucking falling in love with it.
09:04And that was a little game that I made a video essay about called 30 Sentinels Aegis Rim.
09:08And apparently the penguins that recommended this to one of my mods for me to check it out
09:14was also the same ones that also recommended 30 Sentinels Aegis Rim to my mods.
09:18So, you know, just saying just seems, uh, rather interesting.
09:22So, yeah, uh, with that said, I don't know what we're getting into.
09:27I'm naked, scared, and afraid, and I'm, uh, ready to see whatever the hell this game has to offer.
09:32So, without further ado, let's get freaking started, guys.
09:41The story's a work of fiction.
09:42All locations, characters, organizations, uh, appear have absolutely no relation to anything ever existing ever.
09:50Square Enix presents a very Spike Chunsofty Gannic kind of game.
09:55Shogo?
09:57Shogo?
09:57Shogo, are you all right?
10:00Gonna wait to confirm guy, girl.
10:05Can't really tell with the face portrait.
10:06I'm assuming...
10:07Okay, Yoko sounds like a girl's name, so I'm just gonna go with that.
10:10Oh, hey, I can move my face.
10:11Hey, can you hear me?
10:17Huh?
10:17Hey, that's not a proper answer.
10:20All right, the Shogo, Oki.
10:22What do you think you're doing falling asleep here?
10:24Give me quite the shock.
10:26Come on now, up with you, up.
10:30Oh, okay.
10:32And?
10:35There.
10:36How's that?
10:37All right.
10:38This game's got a really fucking cool aesthetic.
10:44Do you feel dizzy?
10:45Have a headache?
10:47Are your humors off balance?
10:49Guess I'm with like a Shouichi voice.
10:52Yeah, it's just kind of a good nice protagonist-y voice.
10:54It looks pretty mellow.
10:56I'm fine, I think.
10:58There's definitely nothing wrong with my humors, though my head's still a little fuzzy.
11:02I'm sorry.
11:03Office worker Shogo Oki.
11:06Who apparently died or drowned, potentially, here.
11:11Uh-oh, that didn't sound good.
11:13Sure, head around a little bit.
11:14See if you can walk on it.
11:16The game is in your control.
11:18Drag the screen or move the right stick to look around.
11:20Try looking around your surroundings now.
11:24Ooh, wow.
11:28Wow.
11:28Oh, there's my mouse cursor.
11:29This is actually really cool.
11:32This actually reminds me a lot of, uh, Mist 3.
11:35It's kind of like a similar thing where you can like sort of look around your, uh, immediate area.
11:44Oh, Jesus Christ!
11:47Whoa!
11:47Okay, no, let's not do that.
11:49Good, good.
11:49You seem to be fine.
11:50What a relief.
11:53You remember everything like, like where we are, what we were doing?
11:56Um, the Rite of Resurrection?
12:01Huh?
12:02Wait a second.
12:03When did I tell you about that?
12:05I mean, I guess I must have, so you didn't know that name, but weird.
12:10Anyway, you still seem a little out of it.
12:12Why don't you look around a bit more?
12:14Look around and select things you want to investigate.
12:16You can converse with people by selecting their faces.
12:18Oh, hey.
12:23I'm gonna zoom in.
12:25Hold on a second.
12:26Wait.
12:27Wait a minute.
12:29I got some files here.
12:31I think.
12:33I think?
12:34There's like some people, right?
12:35Oh, person of interest.
12:36Here we go.
12:37I saw this got updated earlier.
12:39Shogo Oki.
12:41Male office worker.
12:42Shogo is an unremarkable young man entering his third year of working in the planning department
12:47at Hihaku Soaps, a chemicals company headquartered in Sumida.
12:51Born in western Tokyo to an ordinary family around the same time as the birth of color TV,
12:57he grew up amidst the boom of special effects, heavy action films, anime, variety shows,
13:02professional baseball, and pop music.
13:04Shogo graduated from a famous private university in Tokyo and has since settled into an apolitical
13:10mindset common among those of his generation with no strong ideals and no particular dissatisfaction
13:15with the world as it develops around him.
13:17He's content to just go with the flow.
13:19Having stumbled into his current position by pure chance,
13:22and it is safe to assume that he will follow the stereotypical path of working his way up the ladder,
13:27starting a family and remaining at the same company until retirement.
13:30He plays folk guitar as a hobby and is currently looking for a girlfriend.
13:35This very interesting individual.
13:39The storyteller guides those who visit Paranorma site.
13:42Everything else about him remains a mystery.
13:44Hmm? Where are we?
13:50Oh, right. This is Sumida City, Tokyo.
13:53We're Akina Shibori Park, near Kenshicho Station.
13:57Yoko brought me here, saying she needed my help with something important.
14:01It's just past midnight. Explains why there's nobody else around.
14:05Sumida City, Tokyo. One of the 23 districts of Tokyo, located in the eastern part of the city,
14:12is surrounded by the Sumida, Arakawa, and Kuyanaka rivers. At the start of the Showa era,
14:19the area was still divided into two districts, the southern Hanzhou and northern Mukajima, but they
14:25were merged into one district of the Second World War. It's said to be named after the Sumida river and
14:28the banks that line it. Unlike the river, however, its name uses the character for ink, rather than that for
14:34corner. Even now, people still frequently mix up the two. Despite suffering extensive damage from both
14:40the Great Kanto earthquake and air bombings through the war, Sumida managed to recover and come out on
14:45top every time. Once filled with samurai residence, it is now the home to thriving industrial district
14:50and many residential zones, though evidence of its previous character can still be found all around the
14:54area. A bunch of late major landmarks. Kinishibori Park, opened in 1950, mainly close to Kanishio Station,
15:00or Kinshicho Station, and surrounded on all sides by roads. This paved park is popular for people
15:06to meet or relax. Kinishibori Park was named after the Kinishibori Canal, part of the South
15:16Canal, which wants to be found nearby. In fact, the area's name, Kinishio, was derived from the canal.
15:22Alright, I'm not sure we're gonna read every single one of these, otherwise we might be at this for a while.
15:26So far, these areas are only slightly interesting. The aesthetic of this is sick, though. Oh my god,
15:32this artwork is so good. It's got, like, this cool, like, kind of grain effect, too. I'm actually
15:37curious to see if I can actually adjust that if I wanted to. Uh, resolution, standard. The answer is no.
15:45Not really, at least. If you don't like chromatic aberration, not the wazoo, as well as a whole bunch of
15:50hazy bullshit. What in the fuck? What the hell is that? There's like a little... I guess it hasn't
15:55been filled in yet? Make sure you're writing down all those weird little symbols there, guys. It's
16:00gonna be very important. Auto button display. Did you say what year it was? I don't think so.
16:07They said this takes place at a time where telephone booths are around, and it's around the, uh, coming of
16:14colored television, so... I guess, like, the 60s or so?
16:21These telephone booths are all over town. The lights are always on so they can be used in an emergency.
16:27A small fo... booth containing a public telephone, most often found in parks or along roads.
16:32Local telephone calls can be made at a rate of 10 yen per three minutes. 10 yen! Jesus Christ!
16:36More recently, telephone booths are capable of accepting prepaid cards as the telephone
16:40cars have begun to spread, enabling one to make a phone call without the need for small change.
16:44The telephone booths in the downtown area tend to be plastered with unauthorized advertisements
16:48and leaflets, a problem that has shown no signs of slowing down.
16:51Oh, that's cool. There's a little check mark once I've examined, uh,
16:55a thing. That's nice. I don't know if there's a way to... Oh wait, I see... What does this recall?
17:00I'm still a little woozy. What the hell is wrong with me? There's a girl here. Who is she?
17:04Am I dead? I feel like I might already be dead. Based on the setup here. I don't know. Call it a hunch.
17:17It's an inter... That's an interesting looking playground.
17:21I bet it's crawling with kids during the daytime. It's kind of peaceful here at night.
17:28Yikes! That was close. If we died before we got our hands on the Rite of Resurrection,
17:33everything would be over before it started. Like, I'm, like, slowly zooming into her face
17:37as I'm, like, talking to her, by the way.
17:42That's Yoko Funa Fukunaga. Good. At least I didn't remember that much.
17:47I first met her about a month ago. She's 23, works as a housekeeper,
17:51and is really into the occult. Oh god, I'm getting fucking Ayumi flashbacks here. Oh,
17:55Jesus Christ! Is everything that could possibly go wrong gonna end up being this girl's fault?
17:59Just like Ayumi. If I think harder, I can probably recall a little more about what's going on.
18:04I've only met a few times, but we've really hit it off. It's a lot of fun to be around.
18:09I have no idea how she feels, though. Get this, since she isn't thinking about me that way right now.
18:13But now I've got to think for bubbly girls who are into dark things like the occult.
18:18Paranormal fanatic, Yoko Fukunaga.
18:21This is a really, I'm not gonna lie, this game's got me by the dick already. Holy shit.
18:28It's very, again, like 30 Sentinels, dude, where it's like, right off the bat, it's got a,
18:33it's got a really intriguing start and hook here. Housekeeper. After obtaining a junior college
18:38degree, Yoko started working as a housekeeper. Due to her ability to see, see things others cannot,
18:43she has received strange looks from a young age. This ability spurred an interest in the paranormal,
18:47she continues to pursue to this day. Following graduation, Yoko worked a desk job at a training
18:52company, but butted heads with her supervisor, was skeptical of the supernatural, and quit within
18:56a year. Now, while working as a housekeeper, she spends her days devouring mystery magazines and
19:00visiting haunted spots, as she vowed to live life true to herself and never change for the sake of
19:04others. Yoko has no regrets about the past she has taken. Yoko has a dog, a Shiba Inu,
19:09because of course she does, named Ogopogo, who has been by her signs since she was a student.
19:17Uh, recall. Let me think, what can I remember? Okay, her name is Yoko Fukunaga.
19:24We met about a month ago. What's the deal with this park?
19:26It was around nine. It was around noon on one of my days off. I just finished running
19:40some errands in Canisio, and was here, taking a quick break. I was just looking around absentmindedly.
19:51Oh, hey, I can move.
20:02When I noticed this girl luring about, she was digging up holes in the sandbox and searching
20:08around the playground. She seemed to be enjoying herself, talking to the animal figures and petting
20:12them on their heads. My curiosity got the better of me before long, and I struck up a conversation.
20:17Hey, are you looking for something?
20:24Hmm? Ah, sorry. I must look like a total weirdo.
20:30Yeah, the little animations and like the,
20:33her, like, when she was looking around in her eyes. I don't know, this is really dark, so this is
20:37amazing. Yeah, I guess you could say, I'm looking for something. If you want, I could give you a hand.
20:43Really? I mean, that'd be a huge help, but. But. Are you really just a good Samaritan?
20:51Are you after, you know, something else? Huh? I'm a good Samaritan, definitely the other thing.
20:59Definitely the other thing. You're funny. Hey, at least you're up front about it.
21:03Okay, I guess I'll let you, uh, let you help me. Be warned, you might regret what you've gotten
21:08yourself into. No worries. What are you looking for anyway? Did you lose a bracelet or something?
21:13Not exactly. I'm searching for one of the seven mysteries. Supposedly, this is the location of
21:19the Whispering Canal. The, what? Now I've done it. But you think I'm some kind of lunatic.
21:26Seven mysteries of Honjo. Do you know anything about it? I figured everyone around here would
21:31have at least heard of it, but I guess not. Honjo is what the southern part of Sumida is called.
21:40One time ago, this part of Tokyo was split into two separate cities. The north part was the Mukajima,
21:46and the south part was Honjo. Ah. Ah, am I boring you? Well, I'm not a local or anything. I just work
21:54around here. Oh, then no wonder you didn't know. Well, the seven mysteries of Honjo is a legend dating
22:02all the way back to the Edo period. Really? Is that old? It's like over 200 years ago.
22:11Oh, I've got your attention after all. I assumed it was one of those fake stories made up to chase the
22:17uncle craze. I don't blame you. A lot of popular stories going around pretty fishy.
22:26But the seven mysteries of Honjo are different because they're all true.
22:30They're true. That's what I said. They're the real deal.
22:35So, hold on. What does that mean? Are you telling me there's actually paranormal stuff at work in this
22:40park? Yep. Pretty much. There's got to be more to it. After all I've done, I still haven't found a thing.
22:49That was the first time I met Yoko Fukunaga.
22:56Honjo. Whoa. Location in the southern part of modern Sumida city. It consists mostly of
23:01swamplands until the middle of the Edo period. While it wasn't originally considered part of the
23:06city of Edo itself, the area on the eastern side of the Sumida river began to be developed once the
23:10Ryugoku bridge was built after the great fire of Meireki. While Honjo is known for its large number
23:17of rivers and canals, many of these dug during the were dug during the area's urbanization of drainage
23:23and sewage. Hmm. Okay.
23:27Yoko Kray's paranormal phenomena, the supernatural, aliens, cryptids, lost civilizations, ESP, the list goes on.
23:35Such unexplainable phenomena are quick to take on a life of their own. A plethiosaur named Nessie
23:42lived in Loch Ness, sightings of mythical creatures like the Tsuchinoko or the Hibagon, the urban legend
23:49of the Kuchisake, Ona. Television reports of spoon bending psychics, documentaries which feature
23:56mediums and spirit photography. These are only a few examples of stories that have captivated the
24:00public. There is no end to this obsession in sight. With magazines on paranormal phenomenon
24:05enjoying widespread publication, most recently rumors of an ancient ritual known as the Rite
24:09of Resurrection had begun spreading in certain circles. The Whispering Canal, formerly known as the
24:13Kinshibori, many fishermen once gathered on this section of the canal that ran through Honjo.
24:18As the days came to a close, the fishermen gathered up their catches. A terrifying voice would rise up
24:22for the canal whispering, leave it behind. Leave it behind. Those who ignored the voice
24:27found themselves unable to move, and their previously full baskets of fish emptied. They
24:31would then be dragged into the... Oh, hey, there's a typo there. Into the canal, never to return.
24:37This strange phenomenon continued to occur, and the people began to call this body of water the
24:42Whispering Canal. So the seven mysteries themselves became known as the hotspot for a strange happenings
24:47during the Edo period. A number of these stories are survived to this day and became known as the
24:51Seven Mysteries of Honjo. While many of these were likely to resolve people blaming things they didn't
24:55understand on spirits or monsters, the stories continued to be told as urban legends. Despite
25:01what the name would imply, there are actually more than 10 of these strange tales. Their roots likely
25:06come from the stories told by the city's common folk. The most famous in the story is the Whispering Canal,
25:09which eventually became the basis for an idiom in a well-known Rakugo story. So the Whispering Canal,
25:16the Fool's Procession, the Beckoning Light, the Haunting Clappers, the Evergreen Beach, the Taiko
25:23Suguru, the Footwashing Mansion, the One-Sided Reed, and the Ever-Burning Lantern. Interesting.
25:35We exchanged contact information, and we've talked on the phone a few times since. We've even met in
25:39person once or twice, but she never brought up the Seven Mysteries of Honjo again. I figure she got
25:44bored of it. Until today, when all of a sudden she decided to resume her search. Huh? Wait a second,
25:54where'd Yoko go? Oh, there she is, over to the left. According to Yoko, the Whispering Canal,
26:05one of the Seven Mysteries of Honjo is around here somewhere. It's apparently the story that the
26:09expression left of the canal originally comes from. I think I left myself a note about it,
26:15checked my files. Yeah, I've already- I already read it, don't worry. I'm- I'm keeping up.
26:22Ooh, the music is nice and atmospheric here.
26:29There she is. She's back to the camp holes in the sandbox and searching around the playground.
26:34She used to be enjoying herself, talking to the animal figures and petting them on their heads.
26:39No animal needs that much petting. Jeez, she's still at it.
26:48She better not jump scare me, girl. Why don't you get up in my face again? I'll be pissed.
26:53Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Okay. I gotta recall again?
26:59That's right. She asked me to come here to help her look for the- one of the Seven Mysteries.
27:05Actually, I think I did some research into the Seven Mysteries of Honjo.
27:09Keep her all too well. Let's check my files.
27:13Holy shit! If you think I'm gonna read all that, you better guess again, boy!
27:18The foot washing. Ew, look at that dirty, dank foot up in the top right. Ew!
27:21Dude, wow, that thing is really nasty looking. Uh, this is the story of something that occurred in
27:25the dead of a night in the residence of Mikasacho. A foul-smelling wind rattled the house. Suddenly,
27:31a giant foot drenched in blood smashed through the ceiling. Wash and commanded.
27:35Have a service carefully washed the foot and returned from whence it came, fixing the roof and
27:38had broken. A man who'd been visited by the foot every night and asked her friend to trade houses
27:42with him. That night, a foot has stopped appearing. What the fuck? Okay, that's just a goofy one.
27:46The one-sided reed. There was once an infamous rogue by the name of Tamezo who fell for a woman
27:50named Okuma. Tamezo persistently chased after Okuma, attempting to win her heart over and over
27:55again, but she rejected his advance each time. Enraged by her indifference to him, Tamezo brought
28:00a dagger to a canal near Ryogoku Bridge and attacked Okuma. He cut the arm and leg off one side of her
28:06body, or off one side of the body, and threw them into the canal. Ever since then, the reeds growing
28:11along that canal have only spreaded leaves on one side. Gross. Ow. Oh, here we go. Oh wait, she's
28:20coming back this way. Hey, what was that just now? Huh? Didn't you hear that? Now you mention it.
28:31You're hearing things. No, I didn't hear anything. Shouldn't you just imagine it? Hmm. Maybe I did.
28:39But you're a special- you're a special talent. You should have been able to hear it. Pay
28:42closer attention to me, okay? My special talent? What are you talking about? Huh? I mean,
28:48your spirit sense. Feel like you can handle your liquor. Huh? No idea what drinking has to do with it,
28:55but I don't think so. Hmm. Well, you must. I mean, you could see me, right? Huh? Uh-oh.
29:11Shogaoki, 1am. Kinshibori Park.
29:16Uh-oh. I don't know how she's so comfortable talking about the spirits and the paranormal at
29:29this time of night. Maybe she's got guts or she's just used to it. Unless- no, it can't be.
29:40It's gotten late. Really late, actually. It's already past 1am. There's a chill in the air. I guess
29:45this is normal for this time of year. Or so I keep telling myself.
29:52Got most of my memory back, but I still feel a bit out of it.
29:58These telephone booths are all over town. The lights are always on to be used in emergency.
30:04Wait, wait, wait. You're kidding, right? About what? I mean, just now. It's kind of
30:12sound like you were saying that only people with spirits since can see you.
30:15Of course that was a joke. Duh. You don't really think I'm some kind of evil spirit,
30:19do you? But yeah. I meant what I said about your spirits since being strong. I make you down a whole
30:26gimlet of in one gulp. Seriously. That's the real reason I asked you to help me with this seven
30:30mysteries of Honjo business. This girl's fucking with me here. Okay, let me just clarify something.
30:38Are you saying you can actually see paranormal stuff? Sure. I can handle a solid Moscow mule.
30:44The fuck is she talking about? Why are you measuring this in terms of cocktails?
30:49Not a believer, huh? Well, that's no matter.
30:54But you have to have seen some weird stuff over the years, right?
30:57Weird stuff?
30:59Yeah. Like things you could see, but you could never understand.
31:02You can't be serious.
31:11About the spirit sense. I've seen ghost photos and magsies before. Are you telling me they really exist?
31:18You bet they do. But you can at least recognize them if you really believe in them. So be careful.
31:24So even with my skill, I won't be able to see them if I doubt that they exist.
31:28That's right. The spirit world is all about the mind and the soul. You won't be able to see a thing
31:34unless you're properly in tune. But sometimes people get caught up in the moment thinking they might see
31:39something. And then they really do because they believe they would.
31:44Is that how that works? Yep. Just like drinking. You'll never know how much booze you can handle
31:49just unless you're ready to down some shots. I'm still not sure I get the drinking thing.
31:54You know, I realized how strange it was as the words left my mouth. Sheesh. Sheesh.
31:59About alcohol. Totally unrelated, but do you actually drink real alcohol, I mean?
32:07Whoa, talk about whiplash. Next is when you start making small talk.
32:11Well, our conversation was getting a bit dark. I figured a change of topic might lighten things up.
32:17Oh, I see. If you really want to know. I'd like to think I can handle a few drinks.
32:23But to tell you the truth, I never actually had a Moscow Mule.
32:26They're fucking good. Really now? I just thought it sounded cool. I would like to try it though.
32:34Why don't we go for a drink sometime then? Ooh, are you asking me out? Ah, so you were after
32:39something else. No, let's talk about what I meant. Well, technically I did say that to your face,
32:44right? I'm just kidding. Yeah, I'd be up for that. But only if we find one of the seven mysteries.
32:50All right, let's get to work. Oh. Oh, there's a check mark next to it. Does that mean I can keep
32:58talking about the other one then? If you can believe that, there might be a hope for you yet.
33:01I can't be serious. Oh, okay. No, that was just like follow-up dialogue to it. I got you.
33:06But it was essentially like the same thing. Seven mysteries. Just remember,
33:10I actually did some research on the seven mysteries of Hanja at the library.
33:12You did? What'd you find? Well, I discovered a few interesting things.
33:16Uh-hoo! Tell me everything.
33:21Uh, seven mysteries. Although they're called the seven mysteries, let your list nine of them.
33:27Oh, I'm surprised you picked up on that. Nice researching. Some people think that there could
33:32be up to 15. That's the thing about these old folk tales. Stuff gets added to them over the years.
33:38That's more extra stories than main ones.
33:40Yeah, but the seven mysteries rolls off the tongue way better than nine or 15.
33:45If you say so. But it makes sense, don't you think? It's more likely to be passed on if it's easy to
33:50remember. Huh. That's a good point. Uh, are these really ghost stories? So I read some of the stories
34:01and none of them were, well, scary. I thought these were supposed to be ghost stories. That's true.
34:07They're more like a collection of superstitions, really. But there are some pretty disturbing ones
34:11in the mix. Yeah, like the one that's supposed to take place here. The Whispering Canal. People who
34:16fished in this canal would hear a voice call out saying, leave it. They had to ban their catcher
34:21canal. The canal would take it. Right, right.
34:24Is that what you're expecting to find here in this park?
34:28Um, not quite. We're talking about a folk tale from hundreds of years ago. After centuries of
34:34the telephone game, who knows if it's anything like the original story.
34:37So basically, you think that your story of the Whispering Canal might be completely different
34:41from what we know? Exactly. I'm sure it is. I mean, were you curious?
34:46About what? People from around here have the expression left at the canal, right?
34:54Meaning to abandon someone. The story is where it comes from. Except the story of being told today
34:59is about fish. There's something in it about leaving people behind. Now you mentioned it,
35:04that's true. So you're saying the original story maybe did involve someone being abandoned?
35:11That's what I'm trying to find out. Ah, gotcha.
35:14The Rite of Resurrection. Oh, by the way, are we talking about the Rite of Resurrection?
35:20Ooh, your memory is as strong as your tolerance. I'm going to start calling you Martini Man Shogo.
35:25I'm really climbing up the drinks menu, huh? So, you know about it, huh? The Rite of Resurrection?
35:32A magazine ran a feature on it recently that got practically everyone talking about it.
35:36Really? That's where I heard about it. Still, I don't know. It seems a little too far-fetched to be true.
35:42So, the Rite of Resurrection is the forbidden art of bringing the dead back to life,
35:48get cocked up by a famous onmyoji from an ancient age. Rumor has it,
35:53an old manuscript containing actual concrete details about the Rite was recently discovered.
35:59This rumor comes from a presentation given by a local historian Hideki Hirashi at an academic conference.
36:04You sure know a lot about this stuff. That's because I'm secretly a huge alcohol buff.
36:12Yeah, I kind of got that. Oh. But if a Reacher spoke about it in an academic conference,
36:17it must have some basis, in fact. Exactly. That's why I believe the Rite of Resurrection is real.
36:25Now I'm starting to believe it too. Good. The pursuit of the unknown starts with belief.
36:30I got that from Professor Hirashi himself.
36:36The Rite of Resurrection. As indicated by its name, this manuscript holds detailed instructions
36:39on how to perform the secret art of reviving the dead. This forbidden ritual is said to have been
36:43devised by a once famous onmyoji. Local researcher Hideki Hirashi recently discovered the old manuscript
36:48and gave a presentation on it at the academic conference, sending ripples through the field of occult studies.
36:55Wait, hang on. I've got another question.
36:59You mentioned the Rite of Resurrection. Are you looking for that too?
37:03Does this have something to do with the Seven Mysteries of Anjo?
37:06Oh, you're sharp. I could cut my finger on you, to tell the truth. It's actually the other way around.
37:13What do you mean?
37:14Hmm? Well, I started off searching for the Rite of Resurrection.
37:20But along the way, I realized that I need to investigate the Seven Mysteries of Anjo first.
37:23I see. So then...
37:27Why are you looking for the Rite? What's that got to do with the Seven Mysteries?
37:32So, about the connection between this Rite and the Seven Mysteries. Putting together everything we've
37:36talked about. My guess is that the original stories behind the Seven Mysteries, the true stories,
37:42are the keys to finding the Rite of Resurrection. And that's why you're here searching for them.
37:47Do I have that right?
37:48Wow! 10 out of 10! You're proving to be quite the capable assistant.
37:53Wait, since when was I your assistant?
37:55Anyway, this is all just hearsay, but...
37:59Some say that what led to the Seven Mysteries coming to be was the Rite of Resurrection itself.
38:04Huh? The stories come from the Edo period? The Rite of Resurrection was supposed to be way older than that.
38:11Right. As soon as an old Miochi from the Edo period, we discovered the ancient art.
38:19That old manuscript I mentioned with all the details on how to use the Rite, apparently it was written in the Edo period.
38:24Oh, right. I never told you its name. The manuscript is called the Record of Fates.
38:29Whoa. What a name. And it speculates that the secret of the Rite is hidden within the Seven Mysteries of Hamjo.
38:38So now the Seven Mysteries is a hot new trend.
38:41Among who? You know this whole thing is starting to sound pretty questionable.
38:45Come on! Remember what I said about the pursuit of the unknown?
38:48It starts with belief. Right.
38:53Record of Fates. An old manuscript from the Edo period. Written by the Sorcerer to recover the Rite of Resurrection.
38:58It is viewed as a priceless and authentic document due to its detailed account on how to perform the ritual.
39:04Why are you looking for the Rite?
39:05If you're looking into a way to bring someone back from the dead, does that mean you've got someone you want to bring back?
39:12Um, you know what? Forget it.
39:15Just came to mind, so I thought I'd ask. I need to pry. Sorry.
39:19No, it's fine. Figured I'd need to tell you at some point.
39:21It's Ogo Pogo.
39:27Ogo Pogo?
39:29Yeah. I want to bring Ogo Pogo back to life. He died in an accident about a month ago.
39:34Is it your dog? Ogo Pogo died?
39:37Oh, right! Ogo Pogo was my dog. I had him for eight years.
39:41Ah, okay. Your dog. Gotcha.
39:44We spent a long time together. I was thinking it must have been really hard for you.
39:47Yeah. To be honest, I'm not sure if the ride even works on dogs. But as soon as I found out about it, I knew I had to give it a try.
39:55I don't think I could forgive myself if I just let the opportunity pass by.
39:59Definitely. Now I understand why you feel so strongly about it.
40:03Thanks for telling me. I know this must be hard to talk about.
40:06But you know what? Well, that led to me meeting you. So at least something good came out of it.
40:12Though that doesn't mean I'll stop looking, obviously.
40:14Yoko. I'll do everything I can to help you.
40:19Yay, I'm so glad to hear that. Let's keep up the hard work then, yeah?
40:23Whoa! What the? The hell? Feels like the air just changed.
40:32Uh-oh.
40:36Think. This thing's got Yoko really rattled.
40:40I don't want to look behind me.
40:41Yoko, are you okay?
40:46Hey, what's wrong? Stay with me.
40:48No, this... This can't be... No, no, no.
40:51Ah!
40:54I feel eyes on my back. I can't move. Is there something behind me?
41:07I don't see anything.
41:15I don't see anything.
41:17What?
41:20Uh-oh.
41:23Think I'm fine. What are you talking about?
41:25Why? Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
41:30Yoko! Yoko!
41:36I don't see anything.
41:39It's dirt? Bag?
41:40This thing's got Yoko really rattled.
41:46I'm not seeing anything at all, though.
41:48I need to...
41:49What?
41:49Yoko's pointing over here, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary.
41:53Still, she's looked really spooked. Now she's making this up.
41:56Damn it! Did I miss it?
41:57LT to push.
42:01LT to push? What?
42:02I guess I should have pressed that when it was on the screen there?
42:04I'm pressing LT.
42:06Thanks for happening.
42:10I don't see anything I should be frightened of.
42:12Push.
42:14I don't get this.
42:20What's going on?
42:21Did something happen?
42:23What the fuck?
42:23What does push mean?
42:25Push what?
42:26Yoko?
42:32Uh oh.
42:42That's not a good sign.
42:46Huh?
42:56Huh?
42:57What the?
42:59What is?
43:00Something's...
43:01What is it?
43:02Why is this happening?
43:16What the fuck?
43:22Yoko!
43:23Answer me!
43:24Yoko!
43:26No way!
43:27Can't be!
43:28Why?
43:30WHY?!
43:32Oh, Jesus Christ!
43:37Fuck you!
43:40The hell just happened?
43:42No, dammit.
43:43I've got bigger problems.
43:44Fucking demons.
43:45Yoko!
43:46Yoko!
43:47Just hold on.
43:48Everything's gonna be okay.
43:50God.
43:51Stop breathing.
43:53She's cold.
43:54And I don't feel a pulse.
43:57This can't be happening.
43:58Okay, okay, okay.
44:00An ambulance.
44:00Right.
44:01I've got to call an ambulance.
44:02I need a phone.
44:08Right.
44:08The phone.
44:09I've got to call an ambulance.
44:10I called it in.
44:21The ambulance shouldn't be long.
44:22But...
44:24It's gonna make a difference.
44:25The body's gone stiff and her skin is cold.
44:28And I don't think she's breathing.
44:30She looks more like a mannequin than a person now.
44:32I don't think there's any coming back from that.
44:35I don't get it.
44:37It was a few minutes ago, we were chatting away without a cure in the world.
44:40Yoko.
44:42How did this happen?
44:48I wish someone so bright and bubbly just suddenly dropped dead.
44:55Resurrect her.
44:56Huh?
44:58Oh, that's right.
45:00If the rite of resurrection she was talking about really does exist, there might be a way to bring her back.
45:06Someone could just drop dead out of nowhere like they were cursed.
45:10Then why shouldn't there be a way to bring them back to life?
45:15Yoko believed in it, so if I believe in her, it seems completely impossible.
45:20Maybe, just maybe, I can still save her.
45:24Even if I've got to deal with spirit senses and curses and whatever, I've got to try.
45:28Wait for me, Yoko.
45:30I promise I'll use the rite of resurrection to bring you back.
45:34Right before she died, I felt a strange presence a few times.
45:36And it seemed like she saw something, saying that she shook her to the bone.
45:43There's definitely something strange going on, and maybe it's still there.
45:47What could she have seen?
45:50She mentioned that the rite of resurrection and seven mysteries were connected.
45:53So maybe, whatever it was she saw, has something to do with that whispering canal.
46:00Whoa!
46:06Dammit!
46:07That presence again!
46:08Must be around here somewhere.
46:10But where?
46:15Well, hello there.
46:17Huh?
46:17There's something on the ground.
46:19Did Yoko drop this?
46:21I didn't notice it until now.
46:24There's a small wooden sculpture by her side.
46:26It's three or four centimeters tall.
46:28Looks like it could be a keychain.
46:30From how rotted it is, it's way too old for that.
46:33Despite how tiny it is, I feel an almost palpable malice radiating from it.
46:37What the hell is this thing?
46:39Cursed stone acquired.
46:41The Whispering Canal.
46:42What the?
46:52Help me, leave me out!
46:54These Whispering Canal's memories?
46:57Steep sorrow, resentful memories flowing into my mind.
47:02They walk away, leave me behind, drop dead.
47:06Kill them, kill them.
47:08Those who walk away, kill them!
47:12You've acquired the power of the cursed stone, the Whispering Canal.
47:15You can use it to kill those who walk away from you.
47:18Press the use curse button to kill your target as they attempt to depart.
47:22What the fuck?
47:24Is that what I just did?
47:26Did I curse her by doing that?
47:28Press the use curse button to...
47:30What the fuck?
47:32Gah!
47:32A murderous impulse seeps into my soul like thick black tar.
47:41Ow!
47:43Kill.
47:47Can you hear a curse bearer?
47:51You, who so strongly desires the right.
47:54Kill them.
47:55Should you seek life's restoration, take your curse in hand.
48:02Reap lives with a score.
48:05And claim their soul dregs for your own.
48:09Collect enough to save this vessel.
48:12And by their sacrifice, claim the gift of resurrection.
48:15What the fuck?
48:16Better yet.
48:18Slay your fellow curse bearers.
48:20For theirs are the equal of dro...
48:23Equal of droves of lesser souls.
48:28Now go forth and kill.
48:31What the fuck?
48:32Okay, so the Whispering Canal is like updated or something.
48:36Curse power killed by drowning one who leaves the curse bearer behind.
48:40Resentful memory.
48:41Toki loved fishing with her father, Jinkichi, but more than anything.
48:44With their wicker baskets on their back, they would leave for the canal every morning
48:47and fish till the evening.
48:48The miso soup her mother, Koma, made using the carp they caught was to die for.
48:54Her parents loved her dearly.
48:55One day, however, her father disappeared.
48:57Toki's mother went to look for him and never came back, either.
49:00Those who came to express their concern eventually stopped visiting out of fear.
49:04Toki continued to wait all alone.
49:06Mother, father, where'd you go?
49:07Don't lean behind.
49:08An able to bear the loneliness left her home and trudged along the roads until night fell.
49:12Neither her mother nor her father were anywhere to be found.
49:14Tears stung her eyes.
49:16Suddenly, a sound of fish splashed in the water cut through the silence.
49:18She found herself standing before the canal, where they used to fish together.
49:21The taste of carp and the memory of her father's smile flashed across her mind.
49:24Without thinking, Toki walked into the moat.
49:26The sound of water splashing echoed throughout the night air.
49:29The passerby is thought of it only as the fish in the canal.
49:31Splashing faded, and the silence returned to the lonely night.
49:33Fuck me.
49:35Curse echoes, curse bearers.
49:37Curse echoes are the visual manifestation of curses.
49:39These manifestations are fundamentally related to the origin of the curse.
49:43They do not always take the same shape.
49:45It may sometimes appear in a more abstract or disfigured form.
49:48They lack consciousness, unlike a spirit, and are thus the mere dregs of a soul.
49:53Curses are made tangible by what are known as soul dregs.
49:55Someone possessed by a curse that is a curse echo is called a curse bearer.
49:59A curse echo is in itself a curse and possessed curse.
50:02Curse, curse, curse, curse.
50:03A possessed curse bearer can inflict the curse upon others at will.
50:06A curse that comes with a curse echo is considered very powerful in and of itself.
50:09Ordinary those with no spirit sense would not be able to perceive a curse echo,
50:12but anyone who becomes a curse bearer can see other curse echoes.
50:15Holy cursing, curse, curse.
50:16Curse stones.
50:17Onetsuke carvings are built with curses derived from the seven histories of Honjo.
50:21Ordinary those with a spirit sense can wield such curses,
50:23but these cursed stones allow ordinary people to use them as lethally.
50:26Just as lethally.
50:28Was soul dregs.
50:29If someone dies, their life essence leaves the body and becomes a soul.
50:31If one is killed by any means of certain curses, however,
50:33their life essence will turn into a residue as known as soul dregs.
50:36The Rise of the Resurrection essentially uses their soul dregs as a sacrificial offering
50:40to bring back the dead.
50:41But the amount of soul dregs required depends on when a person being resurrected
50:44passed away.
50:45The more time has passed as they're passing, the more soul dregs are required.
50:53What the hell was that?
50:55It was like the cursed memories floating directly into my mind.
50:58In an instant, I understood everything.
51:00When I picked up this curse stone, the Whispering Canal must have cursed me.
51:05I also heard a strange voice.
51:06It told me that if I want to the right, I have to kill a bunch of people with this
51:09curse stone and collect their souls.
51:12I guess it's good to know that the right really exists.
51:14This thing wants me to kill people to get it?
51:16Screw that!
51:17Putting my life on the line is one thing.
51:19Murdering other people is another thing entirely.
51:22Not just one person either.
51:23Scores, it said.
51:26So this is the curse of the Whispering Canal, huh?
51:29Curse that traps the soul of anyone who tries to walk away from me.
51:33But if I use it, collect enough souls, then I'll be able to bring Yoko back.
51:39And there's something about other curse bears being worth more soul tricks.
51:44Jeez.
51:45It's like some fucking Death Note shit here.
51:47I probably had a loss here.
51:57Of course.
51:58I don't know why it took me so long to realize.
52:00This has to be some weird prank she's playing.
52:04Any second now, she's going to open her eyes and get up and have a good laugh at how scared I was.
52:11Right, Yoko?
52:13You can give it up now.
52:15Boy, did I fall for that one.
52:16You really got me good.
52:18Wait, no.
52:19I've got it.
52:20You were really some sort of spirit all along.
52:22There's no way you're really dead, right?
52:27I'm not even fooling myself anymore.
52:30There's no going back.
52:31Only forward.
52:34I called Amos already.
52:38She'll be here soon.
52:39She was taking her sweet time.
52:42It's like I'm being watched.
52:43Is someone there?
52:44Where are you?
52:49I've got my own curse stone.
52:50The curse of the Whispering Canal.
52:52Way over my head.
52:53See Yoko, the one who dropped this curse stone.
52:55I mean, she was the previous owner of the curse of the Whispering Canal?
52:59Then, did she know what the rite of resurrection evolved?
53:04Oh.
53:08Interesting.
53:09I almost wonder if she was trying to get...
53:11Curse someone who walks away.
53:13It almost makes me wonder if she was trying to curse me.
53:15You know, or steal my fucking life.
53:18And it backfired or something.
53:19It's like she was like looking behind me and I turned my back to her.
53:25Oh.
53:27Shadowy figure.
53:31Now look closer.
53:32Is there someone there?
53:33Oh my, how unexpected.
53:49It was your curse that killed that poor woman, I take it.
53:52What?
53:53Cack out your tongue, Mr. Oki.
53:59Huh?
54:02Slenderman?
54:07Tall humorless looking man.
54:08Just look familiar to me.
54:10It's acting like he knows me though.
54:12Have we met somewhere before?
54:18Who are you?
54:18How do you know my name?
54:20Do you mean to say you don't recognize me?
54:24This comes as a bit of a shock, I must say.
54:26Look a little harder and I dare say it will jog your memory.
54:31What's with this guy?
54:33You think?
54:35Man, who is he?
54:37Looks to be in his 30s or 40s.
54:39He's all dressed up in a suit and tie, but somebody looks really shady.
54:43What's he doing here?
54:45Is he watching us all this time?
54:48He tells me curses are nothing new to him.
54:50He's one of the other curse bearers.
54:52I need to be careful.
54:53He might be here to kill me and take my curse stone.
54:56But by the same token, killing him will net me a lot of soldier eggs.
55:03So I have a clue who you are.
55:06How do you know me?
55:07Have we met?
55:09Dear me.
55:10It's always humbling to find that one is not as well known as one believes.
55:15Perhaps my name will help you remember.
55:17I am Takumi Yomioka.
55:20Takumi Yomioka?
55:23Does that ring any bells?
55:25I think I've heard that name somewhere before.
55:29Maybe.
55:31So you do not even know my name.
55:34How disappointing.
55:36Disappointing.
55:38But fortuitous.
55:41Mysterious stranger.
55:45The man currently watching Shogo Oki at Kinoshibori Park.
55:52Well then, Mr. Oki.
55:54Allow me to make you a proposition.
55:56You have a curse stone in your possession.
56:00I would like you to give it to me.
56:03How do you know?
56:04How do you know about that?
56:06Why?
56:06I saw the whole thing.
56:09That doesn't explain how you know what a curse stone is.
56:12Even I barely have a handle on it.
56:14You know about the seven mysteries of Hanjo and their curses and all that, don't you?
56:17But of course, those curse stones, they are terribly dangerous things capable of killing without a
56:26trace so long as their conditions are met.
56:29I hadn't thought of it that way, but yeah.
56:33Imagine what might happen if one fell into the wrong hands.
56:37They would be safer than mine, don't you agree?
56:42Although it seems I arrived too late to stop you from killing that poor woman.
56:48What are you?
56:49That wasn't me!
56:51I am willing to overlook your indiscretion, but only if you give me your curse stone.
56:58No way in hell!
56:59For all I know, the wrong hands are yours!
57:01Very well. I had hoped to settle this amicably, but you leave me no choice.
57:09This Takumi guy must have a curse stone of his own.
57:13He must have a curse stone. He can't have a curse stone.
57:19He can't have a curse stone. There's no way he has a curse stone of his own.
57:23If he did, he wouldn't be so eager to get his hands on mine, yeah.
57:26He wants one of his own. They're that powerful and that dangerous.
57:30But the sounds of it, if I give him the chance, he'll try to take my curse stone by force.
57:35I have to keep him talking and figure out a way to get my curse out first.
57:40How can I get him to leave me behind?
57:43Though, it would be a waste not to take this chance to find out about the other curse bearers.
57:49Well, this is interesting.
57:52Very intriguing so far, I gotta say.
57:55Hmm. Wow. Yeah.
57:58This is definitely fascinating.
58:00It's kind of like an interesting little mystery we got going on.
58:02I'm definitely already having some, like, I don't know, some thoughts of, like, I don't know.
58:06Was she trying to kill me? If she had the curse stone and was, like, walking away, I don't know.
58:11But there was someone actually behind me.
58:14And, of course, that whole story at the beginning, right, where the story tells us that Shokogi was
58:18was already dead. So, I don't know.
58:22But all right, guys, I think this is probably a good spot and things here for now.
58:26I hope you guys are digging this as much as I am right now.
