00:00But if we do start with the San Diego Padres, you want to talk about bringing the heat, man.
00:03This was already one of the best bullpens in baseball, adds Mason Miller.
00:07And also, you know me, Tom.
00:08Like, I've been saying, boy, give me some bats in that, you know, Padres lineup.
00:11They pick up Laureano and also O'Hearn.
00:14I love what the Padres are doing.
00:15They really are trying to chase down the Dodgers.
00:19They really are.
00:20And at this point, you know, I talked about it with you the other day on the early night on Friday night.
00:24I think the play to make in the Padres at this point is to win the NL.
00:28And, you know, it's based on where their odds are right now because, you know, the top row is going to see the Dodgers.
00:34We're going to see the Mets, the Phillies, the Cubs.
00:36And now the Brewers are sneaking up.
00:37And obviously, all those teams aren't going to be making the NLCS.
00:40So when you make high-profile additions like a Mason Miller and then you add depth to the lineup,
00:45that was already pretty solid up top.
00:46But you had the bottom that's that much better with Ryan O'Hearn and Laureano.
00:50Like, we now have a well-rounded lineup on top of a great pitching staff.
00:53Michael King is expected to start making his rehab starts.
00:56So you have him plus Pavetta plus Dylan Cease.
00:59You have Darvish's back.
01:00You have the front-line pitching, the depth of the lineup, and now a great bullpen.
01:03You have it all.
01:05I really like it.
01:06Like, I do.
01:06Like, sometimes they get caught up in the Padres because of what they can be.
01:09And we don't know if that potential is going to be realized onto a Major League Baseball diamond.
01:12But what they add at the deadline, nobody in their right mind, Tom, is going to be like,
01:15oh, man, I don't like what the Padres did.
01:17It just wasn't enough.
01:17They were phenomenal at the deadline.
01:19We'll see if it pays off in the second part of this Major League Baseball season.
01:22And the one thing I do agree with, Tom, like, closers sometimes, you've got to catch lightning in a bottle.
01:27It's very rare, as I pointed out this past week.
01:28Like, you get Mariano Rivera.
01:30He's going to be great for 15 years.
01:31It's usually two, three, four years top of that heap.
01:34And for bad baseball teams, as we just talked about the A's trading Mason Miller,
01:38there's no point in Mason Miller closing games out for you this year or next year.
01:41You're not trying to win, which also goes for the Philadelphia Phillies
01:44as they pick up Duran here from the Twins.
01:46What was the point of the Minnesota Twins actually keeping anything out there
01:49in the scope of, hey, let's close games out.
01:52They move him to the Phillies, and he pays off right away.
01:54First night in Philadelphia, gets a save against the Detroit Tigers.
01:57I love the fact that teams going all in always get those top closers at the end.
02:03The Padres and the Phillies did that.
02:05Yeah, they really did.
02:06The Twins sold off not just Duran, but so many players.
02:11And their franchise is up to be sold at this point now
02:13because they're just going through a disaster of a season and disaster of a few years.
02:17So they traded away a ton of players.
02:19Their lineup is extremely weak overall.
02:21But seeing top-flight teams pick up those high-leverage closers
02:25is absolutely what we want to see.
02:26The Mets did it.
02:27The Phillies did it.
02:27The Padres did it.
02:28The Yankees did it.
02:30You know, those are the teams that we expect to see when it comes to late October.
02:33So it's great to see that address the needs that they have overall.
02:36And it's really shaping up to be a fantastic end to the season.
02:39And it is good for the teams of the Twins and the A's to at least operate rationally.
02:43Like, they know they're not in to win.
02:45We might as well get the assets back from those teams and get the prospects like Mick Abel going to the Twins.
02:51Like, he's a starting pitcher that they will need moving down.
02:54Moving down the line, I should say.
02:56Yeah, like guys like Nick Kurtz, right?
02:57You're not going to move that guy because he's going to be a cornerstone of your franchise for a decade.
03:00But a closer, there's no point in having a closer.
03:03You're not going to develop a closer that's already at the top of the market and say,
03:05Hey, man, we're really going to use you in the next three years.
03:07It makes no sense.
03:08So I do like what both of those teams did.
03:10Just sort of rebuild.
03:10And you're right about the Twins.
03:12I mean, that was an absolute fire sale at the deadline here.
03:15We'll see what they continue to do in the offseason.
03:17But they certainly are paring down their payroll.
03:19No doubt about it.
03:19Team not paring down their payroll.
03:21Love the move for the Mariners.
03:23Tom, for the first time in a long time.
03:24Like, I understand the Mariners started to hit this year, right?
03:26Cal Raleigh's been fantastic.
03:28A couple of those guys stepping back up.
03:29But the fact that they went out and got Eugenio Suarez where now you look at the Mariners,
03:33even though they play in such a great pitcher's ballpark,
03:35you can take them on a night-to-night basis and not just say,
03:38I hope I get a lot of strikeouts from the young pitchers and they score three runs.
03:41This team can explode in the right environment.
03:43And look at that lineup here.
03:44I love what I see out of the Mariners.
03:47Yeah, really, top to bottom, it's so much better.
03:50And it speaks to, like, okay, you had two players to a lineup.
03:54What does that do?
03:55Two players.
03:56And you're like, well, when you have so many leaders in a lineup that aren't great overall,
04:00when you add a Naylor and you add a Suarez, who are lefties and right, you know,
04:03lefties and righties specifically.
04:04I like the fact that they are different.
04:06On top of J.P. Crawford, who gets on base, on top of Cal Raleigh's having an unbelievable season.
04:11You know, we obviously have J-Rod in there, which is fantastic.
04:14And then you have a well-rounded lineup that brings you just more depth.
04:17Like, I always thought that, like, okay, you could just pitch around J-Rod and Cal Raleigh
04:21because the bottom portion of the lineup, eh, really wasn't that good.
04:23And the Mariners, if they scratch across three runs,
04:25their pitching staff will get a done in win games.
04:27Now you just add that lineup drops down just a few more.
04:30There's more dangerous hitters.
04:32On top of the pitching staff, this is a team you have to watch out for.
04:35And in a three-game series, Donnie, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Brian Wu,
04:40that's a pretty good starting rotation to have on top of this lineup.
