00:00the Detroit Tigers the Detroit Tigers held their end of season media availability on Monday and we
00:06learned a couple of things number one we learned that the manager of the Tigers AJ Hinch agreed to
00:11a multi-year extension earlier in the season so AJ Hinch is here for the long run we also heard some
00:20really interesting things from Scott Harris who's the head baseball decision maker for the Tigers
00:25I don't know if he's the GM or the president of baseball operations they kind of do the same
00:28darn thing but Scott Harris talked about maybe the lack of big fish landing that they did at the trade
00:36deadline and he made the point that he does not regret not landing that big fish at the trade
00:42deadline he is very comfortable holding on to the roster that was a game away in inning a swing away
00:49from the ALCS while also maintaining one of the best farm systems in Major League Baseball right now
00:54he alluded to the possibility of acquiring a rental for somebody who actually turned in a worse back
01:02two months than the player that would have been going back to that team from the Detroit Tigers and
01:08they were also asking for more prospect capital there I want to start on the Scott Harris side and
01:12then we'll get to AJ Hinch this guy clearly has a vision in a five-year 10-year plan for the Detroit
01:19Tigers and I feel like he's almost stubborn in a good way that he will stick to that plan he's not
01:26going to push the chip forward if it's a total gamble like he feels really good about the direction of
01:31the Detroit Tigers right now yeah yeah and I appreciate him like being out front about it and
01:38answering candidly you know I think a lot of times you get just so much of the GM speak and
01:42you know it was at least I think made it easier to understand why they approach it that way because
01:48you can also look at a lot of the deadline acquisitions that didn't didn't go great and I
01:53think it was the speculation was like oh maybe that was Gino Suarez and oh well who was the player that
01:57they would have moved the other way that they said had a better second half I'm like thinking oh well
02:00if it was Gino they probably would have wanted a pitcher would that have been like Melton going the
02:04other way because I imagine that would be one of the top names that the the Diamondbacks would have
02:09been asking for like then it makes sense to hold Pat I think where I was surprised though is like
02:12oh why not go get you know another starting pitcher to bolster this thing but at the same time they
02:17would have to give up you know some crazy prospect capital which is a lot of the reason why we saw
02:21these controllable pitchers not get moved so tough spot you know would like to see them be a little
02:26bit more aggressive on the bullpen or whatever it may be but I think it's very clear that Scott Harris has
02:30his his eyes on building a long-term contender here and a team that's going to continue to develop
02:35talent from within and and replenish the big leagues and they don't want to trade from that too much
02:40we saw that I think with the way that they've been able to build this farm system but I still think
02:45they're really fascinating because you can't just count on all these guys to come up and make your
02:49team better at the big league level and you just were a game away you know really as close as humanly
02:56possible again from getting to or to get to the ALCS and you got to look and say well what's going to push
03:02us over you know the to the next step here how do we get you know a little bit closer to the world
03:07series and I think it's got to be a tangible change at the big league level especially when you look at
03:13Scooble and say well I hope we can bring him back but if we can't we don't have that much longer with
03:17him you know on a cheap deal that's where I feel like you need to see a little bit more urgency from
03:21them whether it's on the spending front or if it's making another trade this year but I can respect at
03:26least not forcing it if they didn't feel like there was something there at the deadline
03:29and frankly I can appreciate if Scott Harris sees a clearer picture during the offseason
03:34than at the trade deadline the deadline is really tough and I feel like the deadline
03:38is for the teams that are ready to go all in and deplete their farm to a certain extent or take away
03:43some key pieces from that farm where you can be much more measured during the offseason and frankly
03:49the pool is bigger like you can talk to contenders about swapping you can talk to teams at the bottom
03:56of the league about swapping cubs got kyle tucker man like that was yeah that's better than any
04:00deadline acquisition yeah I mean it's they would neck I would literally never be available at the
04:06deadline you're plucking from the bottom six seven eight teams in major league baseball at the trade
04:13deadline versus having conversations with 29 other franchises over the course of the offseason
