00:00:28Absolutely, we are extending and improving our technology as we speak, Rothy, which is great and we've got lots of things to talk about.

00:00:36Of course, the main headlines getting back to the start of the new season, Brendan Rodgers has thrown down the gauntlet to the Celtic board, we'll discuss that.

00:00:45Russell Martin looking for improvement domestically for Rangers after the high of getting through and getting past Panath and Icos.

00:00:54And of course, David Gray says Hibbs need to focus on Dundee before Belgrade beckons in their European adventures after the disappointment of a wonder goal that knocked them out of the Europa League last night at Easter Road.

00:01:11And that was a sensational game against Michelin, we'll talk about that.

00:01:13Well done to Dundee United.

00:01:15They get past Una Strassen in the Conference League.

00:01:19So lots to dominate our thoughts, but right now the champions will unveil at half past four on a Sunday.

00:01:26It's quite unusual, but that's the nature of it.

00:01:29The champions Celtic will unveil the, well, they'll unfurl the flag.

00:01:35And guess who's going to unfurl the flag, Rothy?

00:01:38Yeah, I saw that this morning, flying them in from Australia, where they now live, Paul McStay.

00:01:44Yeah.

00:01:44The hat.

00:01:45The hat will be back to unfurl the title flag.

00:01:50And then from there, it's up and running against St Mirren.

00:01:54But, Tam, the one thing that we have to discuss is the comments that's come out of Celtics press conference.

00:02:00This is what Brendan Rodgers had to say today when asked about, obviously, that final year that everybody's been talking about.

00:02:07I'm not the type of manager that's good at maintaining anything.

00:02:10So if it's just something to maintain, I'm not the manager for Celtic.

00:02:14It'll be someone else.

00:02:17To build, grow, develop and push.

00:02:18I love being at Celtic.

00:02:20My ambition is for Celtic.

00:02:21It's not for me.

00:02:23I've been in the game quite a long time now, so I think I understand what we need to succeed.

00:02:27So, basically, Brendan Rodgers, here it goes, final year of his contract, throwing down the gauntlet, give me the players I want, or there'll be no discussions about a new deal.

00:02:38Yeah, I think he's just echoing what the Celtic fans are thinking, Peter.

00:02:42You know, Celtic fans are ambitious.

00:02:44They want to go and push to the next level.

00:02:46They know they've dominated domestically.

00:02:48Brendan Rodgers is the same.

00:02:49You know, they've got everything tied up here.

00:02:51They want to go and try and go to the next level in European football.

00:02:55Now, what that is and how much money that's going to take, I don't know.

00:02:58You know, they got to the knockout stages last season, put in a magnificent performance against Bayern Munich and really pushed them all the way.

00:03:05To go to the next level, to get better than that, how much do you need to spend, Peter?

00:03:08Do you need to spend another 40, 50, 60 million?

00:03:10How much does Brendan, how much has he asked the board for?

00:03:13That's what we need to know.

00:03:15You know, it's okay being ambitious, but Celtic are always a club that's ran within their means.

00:03:19So, if Brendan's going in there and asking for 40, 50 million pounds to spend, I don't think that's going to happen.

00:03:25So, listen, Brendan is ambitious.

00:03:28Celtic are ambitious.

00:03:29Celtic fans are ambitious.

00:03:30But there's got to be a ceiling, I think, for Celtic.

00:03:32And I think that maybe Celtic are at it at the minute and maybe Brendan's at it.

00:03:36Well, I have to say to you that we don't have to wait too long, Ruffy, for this.

00:03:41Because, quite simply, it's only one month if we're going to find out if it's the last dance.

00:03:46Because we'll find out on the 1st of September if he's got the players that he wants.

00:03:50When he walks into the press conference, any journalist, worth their salt, just says to Brendan Rodgers,

00:03:55are you happy that Celtic have met your ambitions with the signings you have made?

00:04:01Yeah, I think as it stands at the moment, he's obviously not happy.

00:04:05You'd be scratching your head, you know, wondering why it hasn't happened.

00:04:09You know, you look at all the other clubs, most of the other clubs, they all can bring in players whenever they want.

00:04:15And we know it takes time.

00:04:16And if you're going for a bigger player, it may be taking longer to get them over the line.

00:04:20Different wages, different contracts, that kind of thing.

00:04:23But you would think that Celtic would have had all that in place.

00:04:27Particularly Brendan Rodgers has probably given them a slip of paper.

00:04:30With four or five players that he wants and another four or five if he doesn't get them.

00:04:35So then you have to say to yourself, why?

00:04:38Who's making it take so long?

00:04:40I don't think Brendan Rodgers has asked for 40, 50 million.

00:04:44Although, by the way, Tam, they could afford that.

00:04:47But, you know, I reckon Celtic, even when their next set of financial figures will show

00:04:52that they've got a healthy amount of money in the bank.

00:04:56The big pressure that comes with him throwing down the gauntlet is quite simply

00:05:01that he'll want those two or three players that he thinks are the genuine quality

00:05:06that can get him on to the next level.

00:05:07Whether that's a winger, a striker, a defender.

00:05:11He'll want somewhere in the region of, you know, upwards of 6 million for each individual,

00:05:16I would suggest to you that he'll want to get in there.

00:05:20And he'll certainly want a striker of note.

00:05:22And I think at that point, he'll just start to, if he doesn't get those players,

00:05:28he'll just start to go through the motions again of, you know, OK, this will be the departure.

00:05:35And then all these thinly veiled swipes as each Champions League game goes a-begging,

00:05:42if indeed they get there.

00:05:43Yeah, I think the problem you've got, Peter, when you're talking about those type of players,

00:05:47you know, the finished article, the guys that come in and go straight into your team.

00:05:50I don't think 6 million is a finished article, Tam.

00:05:52I think he's still looking for projects, but the projects are at a different level.

00:05:57They've got a little bit of a standing in saying that, you know,

00:06:01they've maybe scored 20, 30 goals elsewhere.

00:06:05They're not absolutely the top drawer that the five big countries are looking at.

00:06:10There is a level below that that I think he's realistically saying,

00:06:15well, here's somebody that's not going to get into the Tottenham side.

00:06:18There may be banged in 20, 25 goals.

00:06:21Or, here's another situation.

00:06:23Here's somebody that is part of a squad that's really top drawer,

00:06:29but can't get into a Liverpool team, so can we have them for the season?

00:06:33You know, it's got to be something like that, I think.

00:06:35I don't think the supporters see that.

00:06:37They just look at the money.

00:06:38They look at the money that's there, and that's there.

00:06:40It's their money that they're putting in, so they expect a £12 million or a £10 million.

00:06:46That's the expectation.

00:06:47And if Brendan Rodgers is hinting that we're not going to go any further

00:06:51unless we get better quality in, and sometimes you've got to pay for that quality,

00:06:55and the big question is, why are the board not doing it?

00:06:58I think he'll be looking for more than £6 million, Peter, I think.

00:07:00When you look at the last couple, you know, £9 million for either £11 million Engels.

00:07:04I think Brendan will be looking at the £10 million marker to go and buy a striker for £10 million or another £12 million.

00:07:10You can get younger players like an Adam Eder or an Engels who haven't really established themselves,

00:07:16who have got great potential because they're not on big wages.

00:07:19But if you went to go and buy a 25-, 26-year-old with a decent pedigree for £10 million,

00:07:23Celtic couldn't afford his wages.

00:07:25Yeah, I don't think they'll be too enamoured with just the likes of a Shin Yamada.

00:07:31No harm to the boy.

00:07:33He is a player that obviously is exciting, speedy, powerful,

00:07:39but I think they're looking for someone that's...

00:07:43I always look at these games and I say to myself, Celtic are Judge Druffy on those big games.

00:07:50When everybody's buying the Champions League tickets, there's a level above.

00:07:55And Shin Yamada will want to come in and try and make an impression in domestic football first.

00:08:00And I think there's another level above that Rodgers is looking for players that can make an impact

00:08:05and do what they did in the Allianz Arena, but maybe go...

00:08:09Are they capable of going a step further or is it just the luck of the draw?

00:08:13No, I think when you get into the games against Bayern and you're looking for that striker that's going to win you games,

00:08:23I don't think any of the strikers at Celtic have got them now at that level are capable of scoring that goal

00:08:29that could have got them to beat Bayern.

00:08:32I think they're good players, particularly domestically, but when you go against that level,

00:08:38you need somebody with a proven track record at European football who can get that goal

00:08:43when it's nothing each or one each or whatever, and that was very evident at Bayern.

00:08:48I think they were fortunate to put it in the draw last year.

00:08:50Yeah, I think they were. I think when you look at the clubs that were in there,

00:08:54the big, big clubs, Liverpool, PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid, teams like that, Celtic avoided them all.

00:09:00You know, they've got Atlanta, they've got Borussia Dortmund who are a good size,

00:09:04but they're not that top, top level, and I thought Celtic, particularly the home games they got,

00:09:08I thought they were fortunate with the draw, but they went and done the business anyway

00:09:11and they got into a situation where they played Bayern Munich over two legs

00:09:13with nothing really to lose and they've done really well.

00:09:16And I think if you want to go a step further than that, I think it's an astronomical amount of money, Peter.

00:09:20If you were saying to me you need to get into the last 32 or last 16 in the Champions League,

00:09:24I think Celtic would need to spend an astronomical amount of money to better what they'd done last year.

00:09:27Yeah, I do.

00:09:28I think the biggest problem here is only Celtic could get to a situation where we sometimes talk about Celtic fans

00:09:37and that entitlement, but they've won 13 out of the last 14 titles, Ruffy.

00:09:42So domestically, you know, sometimes I think some fans look upon it as a failure if they don't win the treble,

00:09:48but domestically, even with the squad they have at the moment, they'll be looking and saying,

00:09:54well, OK, it could be a tight run with Rangers, but they still think they're good enough.

00:09:57They've got a Kieran Tierney, Benjamin Nygren, I think Enamura, the centre-back, has come in as well.

00:10:04They've still got a title-winning side that's there.

00:10:06But again, the difficulty comes when you have a manager who's already just put it out there.

00:10:14The Celtic fans have got the taste of Europe, they're asked to pay top drawer to go and see these games.

00:10:20The St Mirren one will be nice for Celtic to start off domestically, but they'll look and they'll say,

00:10:25OK, there's one qualifier to come and they want Champions League and they want players that they think,

00:10:31well, maybe, maybe, maybe get them the same, a knockout game.

00:10:36Yeah, I think the Celtic supporters have now been brought up and they want to be there.

00:10:41You know, I don't think they want to think that they expect them to go into the last 16 or anything like that.

00:10:45I think they'll just witness what it's like to have these games at Parkhead and the away games, you know,

00:10:50and I think they all buy into it.

00:10:52It's always full months and months in advance and if you get a big one in your bit, it adds to it.

00:10:59But I just think there's a lot of apprehension now about getting there.

00:11:04You know, this game that's coming up has put so much pressure on it now to win it, whoever it is that they get.

00:11:10And another thing as well is they're looking over their shoulders at Rangers now.

00:11:14Are Rangers getting their act together?

00:11:16Are the players that they're bringing out for England good enough to challenge?

00:11:20And we'll find that out in the first game at Ibrox, you know, when that comes along.

00:11:23And just say for talking to Celtic, we're to lose that.

00:11:26Then you start pressing panic buttons when you shouldn't be pressing buttons.

00:11:31You should be organised enough to take all these games on board.

00:11:34It's an opening game against St Mirren.

00:11:37We've mentioned that Paul McStay is the man who's going to unfurl the Scottish Premiership flag.

00:11:44And then from there, it's about Celtic against Stephen Robinson.

00:11:47St Mirren, of course, the Saints boss is looking to spoil that party again.

00:11:51Somebody's certainly testing us in with that.

00:11:54I think our first five games or first four games were against the top three in the league last year.

00:12:00And Hart's in the cup.

00:12:01But you have to play people at some stage.

00:12:03We haven't lost a game to anybody in the top six.

00:12:07And we got a point at Celtic Park.

00:12:09You know, so we're there to spoil the flag day.

00:12:12We're not there to make up numbers.

00:12:15I'd like to think that Brendan knows we will come and we will have a real go and try and put them under pressure.

00:12:20But we know the task we face.

00:12:22We give them total respect.

00:12:24They're not champions for no reason.

00:12:26They're arguably the best team in the country.

00:12:28Not arguably, they are the best team in the country.

00:12:30So we have to be at the very best and the very top of our game to get anything out of it.

00:12:34He has to go to St Mirren because he's just what wonders there time and time again.

00:12:47And I look and I see his signings and I'm saying to myself, OK, you know, there's a few in there.

00:12:52I mean, I think Malik Dicksteel is certainly one.

00:12:56Careful of that one.

00:12:57Yeah, exactly.

00:12:58Or Dyksteel.

00:12:59Some of the names this season are going to cause us a lot of problems.

00:13:03But nevertheless, there's a few exciting players that he's brought in there.

00:13:07And the Saints fans will be hoping that he can replicate his magic again.

00:13:12Yeah, it's just, I think it's remarkable what he's done at St Mirren.

00:13:14You know, to get them into the top six, I think, three seasons in the trot.

00:13:17Get them into European football.

00:13:19You know, a club that was a little bit of a yo-yo club for a while.

00:13:22You know, bouncing into the championship, back into the premiership.

00:13:25You know, he's not got a big budget there.

00:13:26You know, he's really punching above his weight.

00:13:28But you just wonder how many rabbits he can keep pulling out of that.

00:13:31You know, he's doing it every season.

00:13:33And he's setting himself an even bigger bar this season to get in the top six again.

00:13:37St Mirren fans will be disappointed if they're not in there.

00:13:39So, listen, Stephen's done an incredible job.

00:13:41Him and Brian Kerr in there.

00:13:42And they've got a really good set-up.

00:13:43Keith Lasley, you know, running the club as well from the top.

00:13:46So, yeah, they're a well-run club.

00:13:48And they do things right.

00:13:49They've got a great scouting network.

00:13:51You know, I think John Park's in there, involved with St Mirren now as well,

00:13:53which is a massive addition for them.

00:13:55So, yeah, I'd expect St Mirren again to give a few teams some bloody noses this season

00:14:00and cause a few upsets.

00:14:01But I don't see it on Sunday at Parkhead.

00:14:04But, you know, who would bet against them finishing the top six four seasons in this crop?

00:14:09Yeah, I mean, sixth was great last season for them.

00:14:11I was impressed with them last year.

00:14:13I thought they were good in the early doors.

00:14:16Obviously, when Aberdeen and Hibs and Hearts hadn't got their act together,

00:14:19they were the only team that were, again, Rangers and Celtic, a bit of, not a doing,

00:14:23but they were giving them a game and picking points up against them.

00:14:26I think, again, they'll be in the top six.

00:14:29I think they could be the surprise package to mess up Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen.

00:14:34I think this is the year we'll be looking at, right, we've been in the top six.

00:14:37That's great.

00:14:38Let's go a step further.

00:14:39Let's jump above Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen.

00:14:42Let's see if we can grab a higher place.

00:14:45Do you think they're capable?

00:14:46Yeah, I think they are.

00:14:46I think, as Tam said, I think the recruitment's been good.

00:14:50Obviously, we've got to see these new guys in action.

00:14:52But certainly, last year, the players that he brought in put up a good show.

00:14:56OK.

00:14:57Give me your prediction.

00:14:59For the top.

00:15:00Celtic against St Mirren.

00:15:02I think Celtic will win an open day.

00:15:03You've got to win flag day.

00:15:04You've got to.

00:15:05Yeah.

00:15:05The whole place will be buzzing, particularly Paul being there.

00:15:09You know, and they'll expect it.

00:15:11But I think St Mirren will give them a good account of themselves.

00:15:14We're just waiting to see the Celtic team that turns up.

00:15:18But it's near enough the same team as last year.

00:15:20Yeah.

00:15:20Not for the two wide players.

00:15:22You know, it is nearly the same team.

00:15:24They're the same eight or nine or ten.

00:15:26So, I wouldn't expect there to be any change in that.

00:15:28And some of the results they had, apart from the Ajax game, you know, were pretty impressive.

00:15:33So, I would think the home advantage, I think, St Mirren might be up against it.

00:15:37I don't think it would be a big score.

00:15:38Yeah.

00:15:38Did you think that was...

00:15:39You said there it's just more or less the same team.

00:15:41Do you think there's a flatness around the Celtic fans at the moment?

00:15:46Only because of the signing.

00:15:47They want a signing.

00:15:48They want a big semi.

00:15:49You can look at the Celtic team.

00:15:50It picks its stills.

00:15:51Michael, Johnson, Tierney, Vickers, the three in the middle.

00:15:56We're waiting to see, obviously, Engles gets that shout over the new boy.

00:16:00Yeah.

00:16:01But it's the wide players that they've got all their success this year.

00:16:05And the two best ones aren't there now.

00:16:06Yeah.

00:16:07Tierney will create a huge fanfare on the day.

00:16:11Yeah.

00:16:11I mean, to get a player like that, Peter, for the English Premier League,

00:16:14it's unheard of for a club like Celtic.

00:16:16You know, a guy at the peak of his career.

00:16:18And it's only because he's loved for Celtic that he's back at the club.

00:16:21You know, he's made a few quid down there.

00:16:22He can come back.

00:16:23I'm sure he's not on a poor wage at Celtic either.

00:16:26But he's come up on lesser money and he just wants to play for the club.

00:16:28Celtic fans love him, adore him.

00:16:30And, you know, he was part of an Arsenal team that went very, very close

00:16:34in the Champions League last year.

00:16:35So, yeah, I think he's a brilliant signing.

00:16:38And he's the one flagship one for Celtic so far.

00:16:40He comes in and really improves the team.

00:16:42He's the only one for me at the minute who's done that.

00:16:45And Ruffy's right.

00:16:45You know, the likes of Yang, guys like that have been starting in pre-season.

00:16:48It's interesting to see who he lines up.

00:16:51Does he play Maida through the middle?

00:16:52Does he play Maida through the middle?

00:16:53Does he play Maida wide?

00:16:55It's interesting to see what his team is.

00:16:57But if guys like Yang and Ralston and that are still playing,

00:17:00I don't think the Celtic fans are going to be too happy.

00:17:03Prediction?

00:17:04Yeah, I think this is the right time for St. Martin to get Celtic

00:17:06simply because St. Martin have been playing competitive games in the League Cup.

00:17:09Celtic haven't.

00:17:10They've been playing friendlies.

00:17:10So I think they're running on close.

00:17:12But I'll go for maybe 2-0 to Celtic.

00:17:142-0.

00:17:15OK.

00:17:16Yeah, can't see anything other than that.

00:19:14And I don't think it's anybody else doing it every day

00:19:19So they're buying into it

00:19:20because when you're away from home,

00:19:22you just want to know what's happening at home.

00:19:25You know, and I think that's a big thing.

00:19:27Yeah, a lot of people from right across the globe

00:19:30and of course a huge amount of people in Scotland

00:19:35We're absolutely delighted.

00:19:37and of course that opinion sometimes gets barred, Tam,

00:19:40but we've got to stick to our guns

00:19:42and be impartial, balanced,

00:19:44and that's what being good journalist is all about.

00:19:52and you were running at Rangers, Peter,

00:19:53but fair enough.

00:19:54Yeah, absolutely.

00:20:04Year three of being barred at Celtic,

00:20:06and I'll let me tell you right now,

00:20:07we'll be barred forever, Ruffy,

00:20:08if Brendan Rodgers decides that he's not happy

00:20:11at the end of this month with his transfer,

00:20:13Kitty, and his players.

00:20:16Because I think, you know,

00:20:17good coach that he is,

00:20:19you know, he'll have a real desire

00:20:23to get two or three players

00:20:25that he wants to take the team on

00:20:28and better them in European football.

00:20:31And if he doesn't get them,

00:20:32I don't think he'll be,

00:20:32I think this is his final year anyway,

00:20:34but if he doesn't get the players he wants,

00:20:37the biggest thing that will happen right away

00:20:39is a number of fans are going to switch

00:20:42their anger towards the board,

00:20:43not to Brendan Rodgers.

00:20:45No, you're right.

00:20:46You know, I think at this moment in time,

00:20:47a lot of them are very angry

00:20:49that there hasn't been a lot of movement.

00:20:51Again, results on the park will determine

00:20:53when it turns into a frenzy.

00:20:55If you don't win games,

00:20:56it directs to a particular person,

00:20:59whether it's the manager or the board or whatever.

00:21:01So, we're not hearing anything from the board,

00:21:04we're hearing everything from Brendan.

00:21:05Yeah.
