We also discuss whether or not the Celtic Board have lost confidence in Brendan Rodgers' transfer policy?

00:01:26It just seems to be all the rage at the moment because, Alison, it looks as if Lennon Miller's

00:01:32on his way to Udinese.

00:01:33What a great move that will be.

00:01:35I think it'll be a fantastic move for him and I think he'll maybe be encouraged by the

00:01:39success that a few players have had across recent seasons.

00:01:43I think we had his dad in the studio maybe this time last year and he was speaking about

00:01:48how a move abroad would be fitting for him.

00:01:51Somehow he wasn't going to just take a move for the sake of it whenever someone came in

00:01:56that the next move had to be the right move, that they had to speak to the coach, they had

00:02:00to know that he was going to go somewhere that was actually going to develop him as a player,

00:02:04stretch him as a player.

00:02:05He's not going just because a club have come in and tabled and offered it.

00:02:09They will see this as the next step in his development.

00:02:13Yeah, and in a shy sort of way, I'm kind of glad hopefully he'll get regular football

00:02:18rather than people often associating him here with the likes of Celtic going to sign him.

00:02:24Yeah, I think that'll suit him over there, Peter.

00:02:26I think foreign football, playing abroad will suit him.

00:02:28I think he's technically a really, really good player physically, athletically.

00:02:32I don't think he's probably Premier League or Championship level just yet,

00:02:36but I think over there, probably a similar player to Lewis Ferguson,

00:02:40who's over there and done really, really well.

00:02:41So if he can come over and have the same impact as Lewis Ferguson had

00:02:44and get into the Scotland team, and he's been linked to big clubs as well,

00:02:47then he'll be buzzing.

00:02:48But I think it's great for all parties.

00:02:51I think Mother will get a few quid for him.

00:02:52I think they had to sell him this window.

00:02:54I think he's only a year left in Udinese.

00:02:56He's got a great young player for £3-4 million.

00:03:00So I think everyone will be happy with this.

00:03:05As ever, Scottish football is the gift that just keeps on giving

00:03:10from one week of elation, excitement,

00:03:14and then all of a sudden it can go flat as a pancake over the weekend domestically.

00:03:18Here are the results for you to look at and digest

00:03:21and give us your thoughts on.

00:03:23Livingston 3, Falkirk 1, St Mirren 0, Motherwell 0,

00:03:27Rangers 1, Dundee 1, Aberdeen 0, Celtic 2,

00:03:30Dundee United 2, Hearts 3,

00:03:33and Hibernian 2, Kilmarnock 2.

00:03:36That was the results.

00:03:38Tam and I had our predictor heads on on Friday,

00:03:41but I don't think we had too many of them correct,

00:03:44the way it was all unfolding over Saturday and Sunday.

00:03:48This is how the table looks at the end of the weekend.

00:03:51Hearts at the top of the table with Celtic,

00:03:53also a joint top on six points.

00:03:56And then Livingston, Hibbs, and then Kilmarnock and Rangers.

00:03:59Rangers at this point, four points behind Celtic

00:04:02after only two games played, Ruffy.

00:04:05It is quite incredible.

00:04:06And Aberdeen, the Cup winners, bottom of the table.

00:04:09Yeah, I think as far as Aberdeen's concerned,

00:04:11I think the Cup win at the end of the season

00:04:14kept everybody on board.

00:04:16But I think if you look at the stats for the whole season,

00:04:19I think they'd only won about four games out of 27.

00:04:22So that's something they'll have to rectify.

00:04:24I think the Aberdeen supporters will demand

00:04:27a lot more success this year with that Cup win.

00:04:30As far as Rangers are concerned, yeah, it's up and down.

00:04:32You could see the stadium again emptying near the end.

00:04:36You know, they're not happy.

00:04:38There are a lot of empty seats at the end.

00:04:40They're not hanging on in there.

00:04:41And a lot of unhappy Rangers supporters.

00:04:43Yeah, we're going to talk about that in detail as well.

00:04:47So many good performances, and it's only right and proper.

00:04:49We'll do this every week, Ali.

00:04:51I know that, you know, certainly in the newspaper end of things,

00:04:55when players used to look and see,

00:04:56have I managed to get in the team of the week?

00:04:58I think it's only right and proper that we get the argument started early.

00:05:02I've picked the team of the week.

00:05:05I actually picked the two best games of the weekend,

00:05:07to be honest with you, Tam.

00:05:09And here's that team of the week.

00:05:11In goal, Schmeichel, Lawal, the right back for Livingston,

00:05:15in there alongside Stuart Finlay, Clark Robertson,

00:05:18and Ciarán Tierney.

00:05:20And then from there, I think from the left-hand side,

00:05:25Lewis Smith, who scored an absolute worldie in his match.

00:05:30And then over and above that, in that midfield area,

00:05:33Rio Hattati with his great goal.

00:05:35Kamara of Dundee United, a beggar partner,

00:05:39who looks as if he's going to be a real force this season.

00:05:43Brannan, his goal is something we're going to talk about.

00:05:46And then Dolcic and Negrin is the team of the week.

00:05:50So plenty to discuss there, Ali, in the choices we've made.

00:05:55Some you agree with, some you won't.

00:05:57Indeed.

00:05:57I think that's the beauty of the team of the week,

00:06:00that there's no one that sees it through very partisan lenses,

00:06:04that people just think, yes,

00:06:06I think that's who deserves to be in the team of the week,

00:06:08so that's who'll go on it.

00:06:09Have we missed anybody?

00:06:10I don't think he's likely to get in the team of the week just yet.

00:06:21But can I just say this to you, Tam?

00:06:24Again, it's very rare not a single Rangers player in it.

00:06:28And that tells you the story of the first game we're going to talk about,

00:06:31because yet again, we are in a situation where Rangers looking as if they've turned things around

00:06:38with a European performance to be positive about,

00:06:41and then back domestically, they were lucky to get a point.

00:06:45Yeah, they were.

00:06:46I mean, you get into the game after a fantastic result during the week in Europe.

00:06:49You know, the fans are buzzing again.

00:06:51You know, Dundee at home, who started the season poorly,

00:06:54and everything pointed towards a comfortable home win.

00:06:57But even from the first five, ten minutes, Rangers just didn't start well.

00:07:00And I thought Dundee looked really comfortable.

00:07:02You've got to give Stephen Presley's coaching staff a lot of credit.

00:07:05They were very tight, organised, and they were dangerous on the break.

00:07:08You know, they hit the post in the first half as well.

00:07:10And Rangers looked devoid of any ideas.

00:07:12Obviously, the sending off affects the game as well.

00:07:14Dundee go ahead, and you think that Dundee are going to see the game out.

00:07:18Dubious penalty at the end that we're going to speak about,

00:07:20and Rangers get a point, but just not good enough, Peter.

00:07:22And for Rangers to drop two points to Motherwell and Dundee

00:07:25is a horrendous start when you look at the way Celtic have started.

00:07:29You know, four points behind, I think.

00:07:31And obviously, if Rangers go through, they'll postpone that St Mern game.

00:07:34You know, Celtic pick up three points against Livingston.

00:07:37And all of a sudden, you're going to that first old Firm game,

00:07:39a possibility for Celtic to go ten points ahead of Rangers will win.

00:07:41It's incredible, the start.

00:07:43And Russell Martin under extreme pressure already.

00:07:46Well, the Rangers manager has emphasised yet again

00:07:49that this is going to take time.

00:07:51The three clubs I've been at, there's a bit of pain,

00:07:53and then when you get through that pain, it's so worth it.

00:07:56So, I don't think I expected anything less coming here

00:08:00that it's not going to be a quick fix.

00:08:02This club's not had success for a long, long time.

00:08:04So, I've just got asked about the supporters' reaction in there at all.

00:08:07I just don't have a problem with it, because I understand it.

00:08:09Like, they're at a point now that this club and the supporters

00:08:11where something needed change, and the ownership's changed.

00:08:15There's a new coaching staff, there's new players.

00:08:18There's hopefully a new way of behaving at the training ground properly every single day

00:08:23regarding standards and what's expected at this football club.

00:08:27So, it's not a quick fix.

00:08:29OK, it's not a quick fix.

00:08:33Let me offer you my tuppence worth on clearly a message

00:08:37that has been forgotten by many a Rangers fan.

00:08:40You know, you can go back to John Bennett,

00:08:42you can listen to what John Gilligan had to say.

00:08:45You're now in a situation where, quite simply,

00:08:49Patrick Stewart has mentioned it as well,

00:08:51there's a process here of a rebuilding.

00:08:53It's not a takeover that is the equivalent of a Lawrence Marlborough,

00:08:59you know, with David Holmes at the helm,

00:09:01or eventually a David Murray.

00:09:03This is a gradual process in a business

00:09:05that has been, you know, structurally wrong for a number of years.

00:09:11So, it is going to take time.

00:09:13I mean, I was listening to someone, a Rangers fan,

00:09:16on one of these podcasts,

00:09:18talking about it's time to sack the manager.

00:09:20And I'm thinking, can this country get any more stupid

00:09:23when it comes to hiring a manager to do a job?

00:09:27And after two games, you're suddenly saying it's time to bid him.

00:09:30It's also the reality of life in Glasgow.

00:09:33There is no time.

00:09:35And I think I 100% agree with you.

00:09:39It's ludicrous to be thinking about managers being sacked

00:09:43and all the rest of it after three seconds of the season being underway.

00:09:48It's nonsense.

00:09:50However, the reality of managing a club like Celtic or Rangers

00:09:53invites a microscopic intensity

00:09:56that is not like anywhere else in the world.

00:10:00And the fact that Rangers have dropped points to Motherwell and to Dundee,

00:10:06teams that they should be beating,

00:10:08that they comfortably have the resources to go out and beat,

00:10:11even if you consider this is a long-term project

00:10:15and there is a restructure

00:10:16and there are all sorts of things,

00:10:18over the course of the campaign,

00:10:20I think people would forgive not winning a title

00:10:23if you can see that things are going in the right direction.

00:10:26When you're struggling to break down teams like Motherwell and Dundee,

00:10:29the frustration is that what you're seeing

00:10:31is many of the problems of old.

00:10:33Now, what happens then at Rangers when Celtic are winning,

00:10:38so you have this four-point gap that opens up as a panic

00:10:41because right away you're on the back foot

00:10:43and right away you're thinking,

00:10:45oh, Celtic win that next game

00:10:47when you've got a free weekend at seven points,

00:10:49there's an old firm game.

00:10:50What happens then?

00:10:51The gap could be,

00:10:52it could be this,

00:10:53could happen,

00:10:54that could happen.

00:10:55Every scenario is worked out

00:10:57and if you were to get to a point

00:10:58where you're going in on the 1st of September

00:11:01and Celtic are 10 points ahead of Rangers

00:11:04with the Rangers' head with a game in hand,

00:11:06the pressure becomes intolerable

00:11:08because it goes from game to game.

00:11:10You can't afford to slip at all.

00:11:12No, I accept that

00:11:13and I think we all understand the very nature of it, Ruffy,

00:11:16but in a situation where there is a narrative

00:11:18that they're trying to push out there,

00:11:20quite simply,

00:11:21it's erratic even over a seven-day period.

00:11:24You know, from the Motherwell game,

00:11:27to suddenly the performance

00:11:28which was shoots of positivity

00:11:31around Victoria Pilsen,

00:11:33regardless of what standard you think

00:11:34Victoria Pilsen was,

00:11:36it was still a good performance,

00:11:37it was still a 3-0 victory,

00:11:39it still puts them a stage closer

00:11:40to group stages of the Champions League,

00:11:43whether you think they're going to get there or not.

00:11:45You look at it and you see

00:11:47he's tweaking everything around.

00:11:49Every one of us,

00:11:50unless somebody's going to contest it,

00:11:52could actually tell Russell Martin,

00:11:54and he knows it himself,

00:11:55the problem is,

00:11:57Rangers can't defend.

00:11:59They don't defend.

00:12:00They don't defend from front,

00:12:02middle to back.

00:12:03They can't handle set pieces

00:12:04and they get caught out.

00:12:06And they do not know how to defend

00:12:08even when they're trying to

00:12:09take a game to someone

00:12:10because they get caught out.

00:12:12The back line is the problem.

00:12:14It doesn't matter how many times

00:12:15you look at it,

00:12:16when you're conceding goals

00:12:17and losing games,

00:12:18the defenders are the problem.

00:12:19Yeah, but that's up to the manager

00:12:21to sort that.

00:12:22And he has sorted it.

00:12:23He's brought in a cent and a half

00:12:25who cost a few bob

00:12:26and he is spending more money

00:12:28than Motherwell and Dundee.

00:12:31So this is a short fix

00:12:37or something like that.

00:12:38It's not a quick fix.

00:12:39Yeah, I think it has to be.

00:12:41It has to be for him

00:12:42because he never had 50%

00:12:44of the Rangers fans

00:12:45shouting to the rooftops,

00:12:48he's the manager we want.

00:12:49So he's on a sticky hook

00:12:50right at the very beginning

00:12:51because half of them

00:12:52didn't want him there.

00:12:54They wanted a bigger world

00:12:55or bigger name or whatever.

00:12:57So when you're spending

00:12:57the kind of money he's spending,

00:12:59I don't know what,

00:12:59run about 10 million so far,

00:13:01these fans expect you to go out

00:13:04and beat Motherwell

00:13:04and beat Dundee

00:13:05and beat them quite comfortably.

00:13:06I also think part of the problem,

00:13:08I agree with you

00:13:09about the backline,

00:13:10but I also think

00:13:11they struggle to break teams down.

00:13:14They struggle for any creativity.

00:13:16A lot of the ball

00:13:17without really being able

00:13:19to offer any significant menace

00:13:21in the final third.

00:13:22They're turgid

00:13:24in the middle of the park at times.

00:13:26I think the new system,

00:13:27new players,

00:13:28you're not really seeing

00:13:29the rasking that you saw

00:13:31towards the end of last term

00:13:33who offered that bit of creativity

00:13:35of being able to unlock a defence,

00:13:38being able to open things up a bit

00:13:39and I think that's a huge problem

00:13:40for the Rangers.

00:13:41I think you look at the two games,

00:13:42Peter,

00:13:43Motherwell away and Dundee at home.

00:13:45The Rangers have scored two goals,

00:13:46one's from a corner

00:13:47and one's for a penalty.

00:13:48They can't,

00:13:49you know,

00:13:49that's a damning indictment

00:13:51of how poor they are offensively.

00:13:53They can't break teams down,

00:13:54particularly at Ibrox as well,

00:13:55you know,

00:13:55so you're scoring two set pieces.

00:13:57And yet the midweek game though,

00:13:59on Tuesday night,

00:13:59that front three.

00:14:01Because Victoria Poulsen

00:14:02looked formidable.

00:14:03Victoria Poulsen came

00:14:04and there was space.

00:14:06Again,

00:14:06we mentioned it in midweek,

00:14:07Tam,

00:14:08you cannot get to this erratic

00:14:10knee-jerk reaction constantly,

00:14:12you know,

00:14:12from one game to the next,

00:14:14turning around and saying,

00:14:15they're back.

00:14:16Because that was the one thing

00:14:18we were talking about is,

00:14:19you can't get from a Motherwell

00:14:20to a Victoria Poulsen

00:14:21and go,

00:14:22you know,

00:14:23Rangers are back

00:14:24when you see those little

00:14:25passages of play

00:14:26and it's because domestically,

00:14:28Ruffy,

00:14:29suddenly it can all fall flat again.

00:14:31And by the way,

00:14:32this is a Dundee team

00:14:33the week before I watched up

00:14:34at Den's

00:14:35who were woeful.

00:14:37Yeah,

00:14:37and we all sat here on Friday

00:14:39and said,

00:14:39this is going to be three or four,

00:14:41the way they were last week

00:14:43and the way Rangers were

00:14:44in midweek.

00:14:45But you have to say,

00:14:46as Tam said,

00:14:46the Dundee manager

00:14:47got his tactics spot on.

00:14:49The two people that created

00:14:51all the problems

00:14:51against Poulsen

00:14:52were the two wide men.

00:14:54And all he did was play

00:14:55two guys out wide

00:14:56to stop them going forward.

00:14:57And they just nullified

00:14:59all the good things

00:15:01that happened in midweek

00:15:02and it never happened

00:15:02at the weekend.

00:15:03Yeah,

00:15:04and this is,

00:15:05again,

00:15:05on the flip side of this,

00:15:06you have to give great credit

00:15:08to Dundee

00:15:09and Stephen Presley

00:15:10thought they deserved

00:15:11more than just a one point.

00:15:12That would have been

00:15:13the perfect performance,

00:15:15but it wasn't to be.

00:15:17You know,

00:15:17I think

00:15:17I've talked a lot about

00:15:19time progression,

00:15:22seeing improvements.

00:15:24You know,

00:15:24I saw some green shoots

00:15:25last week

00:15:26against Hibernian

00:15:27and again,

00:15:28further improvements today.

00:15:30I thought we deserved more,

00:15:31yeah.

00:15:31I thought we had

00:15:32some really good moments.

00:15:33We obviously hit the post

00:15:34with some really good

00:15:36counter-attack moments.

00:15:38And as I've said,

00:15:40you know,

00:15:40I was exceptionally proud

00:15:41of their performance.

00:15:43Yeah,

00:15:44fair play to Stephen Presley.

00:15:45He did say in the after-match

00:15:46press conference

00:15:46against Thames

00:15:47that he could see

00:15:48that the shape was there,

00:15:50that the organisation

00:15:51was there.

00:15:51He just needs to

00:15:52obviously try

00:15:53and get goals

00:15:55at key moments

00:15:56and then work on

00:15:58what he's trying

00:15:59to build there.

00:16:00And he did say last week

00:16:01he needs six players.

00:16:02He's brought one in,

00:16:03so he only needs another

00:16:03five.

00:16:05But I still say

00:16:07in your wildest predictions,

00:16:09Tam,

00:16:09you never thought Dundee

00:16:10you were capable

00:16:10of going there.

00:16:11Did they?

00:16:12I mean,

00:16:13let's not forget,

00:16:13they scored before

00:16:14Giga gets sent off.

00:16:16Was it a red card?

00:16:18Yeah,

00:16:18it probably was,

00:16:19but I don't think

00:16:19there was a lot of contact.

00:16:20But I think

00:16:21as a striker,

00:16:21as soon as you get

00:16:22wrong side of the defender

00:16:23in that situation,

00:16:24you go down,

00:16:25it's a red card.

00:16:26I don't think

00:16:26there was a lot of contact

00:16:27but once the referee

00:16:28gives it,

00:16:29he's not going to change it.

00:16:31The penalty kick,

00:16:43that's being a forward-thinking

00:16:45player and trying to do

00:16:46something for your team,

00:16:47trying to win your team

00:16:49trying to get another

00:16:50player sent off,

00:16:50that's part of the game.

00:16:52I thought both of them

00:16:53were soft,

00:16:53to be honest,

00:16:54but I can understand

00:16:55why the referee gave them.

00:16:56I thought it was a soft penalty,

00:16:58to be honest with you.

00:17:13you just have to touch somebody

00:17:16come up with a decision.

00:17:25absolute pelters.

00:17:27He wasn't happy

00:17:28with the offside,

00:17:28but it's almost like

00:17:30night and day,

00:17:31it's offside or it's not.

00:17:33I thought it was very clear.

00:17:35well offside.

00:17:37I think even

00:17:38like on first viewing,

00:17:39just that I thought

00:17:40it was offside.

00:17:41When you watch it back,

00:17:42I think you can see

00:17:43he's offside.

00:17:43I saw his frustration

00:17:44at full time,

00:17:46but I think his frustration

00:17:47probably owed more

00:17:48to the afternoon

00:17:49and the level of performance

00:17:51across 90 minutes

00:17:52and it did

00:17:52in that moment itself.

00:17:54The penalty for me,

00:17:56I struggled with it.

00:17:57I watched it back

00:17:58a few times.

00:17:58I think it was very clumsy,

00:17:59but I thought it was very soft.

00:18:06Once he gives it,

00:18:06he's not going to change it.

00:18:07If he didn't give it,

00:18:08he wouldn't have changed it either.

00:18:09The initial decision

00:18:10was always going to stand

00:18:11in that situation,

00:18:29to absolutely annoy

00:18:30the life out of you

00:18:31or a manager trying to build,

00:18:33but if he gets to a situation

00:18:34where he would lose

00:18:35that first game

00:18:36and be facing

00:18:37such a huge gap,

00:18:39it becomes,

00:18:40it just becomes mental

00:18:42because you know

00:18:42the way the fans

00:18:43go with these things.

00:18:44I think they've got to

00:18:45stick to the manager,

00:18:45Peter.

00:18:46They've invested heavily

00:18:47in him.

00:18:47They've invested heavily

00:18:48in the squad.

00:18:49I think they're going

00:18:49to have to stick with him.

00:18:50It wouldn't surprise me

00:18:51if Rangers beat Celtic

00:18:52to Ibrox.

00:18:52Rangers raise their games

00:18:54against the bigger teams.

00:18:55Celtic will come

00:18:56and attack Rangers

00:18:57at Ibrox.

00:18:58It suits them.

00:18:58They've had a good,

00:18:59decent record last season

00:19:00against Celtic.

00:19:00So I wouldn't put it

00:19:02past them

00:19:02if they can win that game

00:19:03and get back down

00:19:04to four points

00:19:05and everything

00:19:05in the Gardens Rosier

00:19:06gave me a game in hand.

00:19:07So it's just that

00:19:08these results

00:19:09that the Rangers supporters

00:19:10it's just like

00:19:12rinse and repeat

00:19:12from the last couple

00:19:13of seasons

00:19:13have a great result

00:19:14in Europe.

00:19:15Beat Celtic,

00:19:16draw it to St Myrne,

00:19:17draw it to Indie,

00:19:18beat off him with him.

00:19:19It's just these same results,

00:19:20Peter.

00:19:20They've no consistency.

00:19:22They can't handle that

00:19:23intensity and that pressure

00:19:24every week to win.

00:19:25And Celtic have got

00:19:25winners in their dressing room,

00:19:26winners in their team

00:19:27that know how to win

00:19:28these games.

00:19:30about the game yesterday,

00:19:31Cruz the game at Aberdeen.

00:19:33Rangers would go up there

00:19:34and probably drop points

00:19:35and I think that's the

00:19:35difference between the two teams.

00:19:39I'm saying this, Ruffey,

00:19:40but I think there's a bookmaker
