00:00the 1996 World Cup of Cricket. This morning we're off to Royal Pindi in Pakistan for the second
00:20match of the tournament featuring a team we've seen a lot of recently, South Africa, and one
00:25we're not quite so familiar with, the United Arab Emirates. The game was scheduled to be played
00:30yesterday but heavy rain in the area forced the umpires to postpone play and so we're back again
00:35today making use of the day allocated in the event of a washout.
00:55Wales Cricket World Cup 1996 South Rica vs UAE Second Match Rawalpindi 16 February 1996
01:24South Africa first and they've elected to play an all seam attack, no Adams, no Simcox and
01:35De Villiers, the one seam bowler missing out, he's got a twisted ankle. Dermot, any ideas
01:42on that line up? No but they've got a good record, I mean they won the ICC trophy winning 10 straight
01:47games on the trot and they've got a lot of Pakistani born players in their side so they
01:51should be quite used to the conditions. Four days rain out of seven just prior to a one
01:57day international is any groundsman's night wear. Let's see how he has shaped up on this
02:02particular occasion because that's what he had to cope with and he's done very well. This
02:05area here which is really quite close to the stumps and a little wider off stump was soaking
02:10wet yesterday. As you can see now it's really pretty dry and shouldn't affect play whatsoever.
02:16The World Cup 1996 in Pakistan is about to begin. It's a group B match, it's been already of course New Zealand beating England at Ahmedabad.
02:23The World Cup 1996 in Pakistan is about to begin. It's a group B match, it's been already of course New Zealand beating England at Ahmedabad.
02:30RDI debut from UAE, Shahzad Altaaf.
02:37Medium pace but he's played his first class cricket for Pakistan.
02:44Best performance 8 for 12 for Pakistan Customs.
02:51Best performance 8 for 12 for Pakistan Customs.
02:56Find all the cricket in Pakistan is played by Riyadabad.
03:01RDI debut from UAE, Shahzad Altaaf.
03:06Best performance 8 for 12 for Pakistan Customs.
03:11Find all the cricket in Pakistan is played by Railways or Customs or PIA.
03:16And that performance was against Gujaramwala in 75-76.
03:21But he's been a resident of the UAE for the last 19 years.
03:36That's a good stop.
03:42You may see a bit of class keepers not having to dive for that but I think it's a bit greasy underfoot there.
03:55A little bit of movement off the seam this time down the leg side.
03:58I don't think Mr Bucknell will let him get away with that again.
04:01Another one goes down there.
04:03Easily South Africa's most consistent and successful batsman in the last two seasons.
04:09Two domestic seasons anyway.
04:12To average anywhere near 35 in one day internationals is a pretty good performance.
04:17You get up round 40 you're doing really well.
04:19Oh that's well played.
04:24Really well timed.
04:25To see how Hudson let the ball come right onto him.
04:28Played the ball underneath himself.
04:33Timed it past mid-on.
04:34A couple of runs there for Andrew Hudson.
04:36Hudson and Kirsten have an opening partnership average
04:41of 34.
04:43That's not a problem these days.
04:45I've seen people swing the ball out from that position on plenty of occasions.
04:48That's close.
04:49That's a big shot.
04:50Well it must have been very close.
04:55Be very interesting to see that again.
04:57Steve Buck knows the umpire.
04:58Whether there's just a little bit of bat involved.
05:05There's a walk down the wicket too.
05:06So I think we'll find, that's a very good shot.
05:09We'll find that Gary Kirsten's way out of his crease and perhaps the swing might have taken it down leg side.
05:13Nothing to do with him dropping the ball.
05:15It's a good shot.
05:17That's over the inner field.
05:20Two bounces and away for four.
05:22So the first boundary of the morning.
05:24Six.
05:25I beg your pardon.
05:26Goodness me.
05:28Swinging down the leg side.
05:30Kirsten picks it up.
05:31Right out of the sweet spot.
05:32Chicking a bit there.
05:33And that short mid wicket.
05:34Another fine shot.
05:35Perfectly straight back.
05:36And the timing again does it.
05:37Beautifully played.
05:38And the ball races down the ground for four runs.
05:39Well played Andrew Hudson.
05:41And that was a no ball.
05:43If anything ever described timing, this is, this is almost a sort of push.
06:02And it fairly raced away down the field, beating the bowler, and both mid on and mid off in the middle.
06:07And he fairly raced away down the field, beating the bowler, and both mid-on and mid-off in chase.
06:20Oh, that's a cracking shot. Cracking shot.
06:23You couldn't say mid-off was out of position. He was a couple of yards wide,
06:27but sheer timing and speed of that ball gives four more to Andrew Hudson.
06:31Very much Andrew Hudson's strength. The drive through the mid-off, extra cover area.
06:38Just left foot. Didn't go the whole way to begin with, but the pace of the ball and the timing of the shot there,
06:45the little extra step tells you that the left leg didn't go the full stride.
06:49Slow ball, but it's treated to the same balloon drive by Andrew Hudson.
07:01Down the ground, four runs.
07:08So, 37 for nowhere, get up to seven overs.
07:11Nation in Kenya when they won the ICC trophy, which brought them into this prestigious World Cup.
07:16Cracking shot. Cracks the umpire.
07:21Could it be a run-out? Direct hit.
07:24Absolute shambles.
07:29Let's start again.
07:36Well, there's a good shot from Gary Kirsten.
07:38Straight back past the bowler.
07:40Good piece of fielding by the umpire.
07:42Hesitation in the middle.
07:43A little bit slow getting the ball to the stums.
07:46The batsman's safely home, but it's certainly all happening here.
07:50None for 37, South Africa.
07:527.2 overs.
07:54A good piece of fielding by that man.
08:06That's some wonderful straight driving going on at the moment.
08:08Another one, all the way for four runs, this time Gary Kirsten.
08:13It looks a cracking pitch, but my word, Hudson and Kirsten are really laying into these straight drives.
08:20This is something that coach Bob Woolman has been working very hard with the South African batsmen.
08:23When they come to, when they've been practicing prior to coming to Pakistan and also upon arrival.
08:35Well, that's a surprise shot.
08:36I think he aimed it a bit straighter, but it went behind square on the left side.
08:39It's four runs.
08:40You can see the speed of the outfield.
08:42It's only looked keen.
08:43And this time they'll go for a second.
08:50No doubt about that.
08:53And that brings the half century up.
08:56Kirsten and Hudson.
08:5750 for no wicket.
09:01Hudson and Kirsten is 34, so they're well past that today.
09:04Oh, lovely shot.
09:12Beautiful stroke.
09:14Four runs all the way.
09:17So easy.
09:23Oh, that's an easy one.
09:25It's short.
09:25It's a long hop, really.
09:26Swung away by Hudson.
09:28Four more runs.
09:30Eight off the over 58 foot o'er.
09:34Yes, no.
09:40That's a fatal call as a rule.
09:44Well, I think they called for obstruction in the end because the throw actually hit the batsman backing up.
09:53Not intentionally.
09:54Andrew Hudson was in the way of the throw.
09:56But it was a very poor call.
09:57A very bad send back.
09:59Potential run out.
10:01Kirsten out.
10:02Straight out of the block.
10:02Straight away.
10:03Obviously calling yes.
10:04There's no to Hudson.
10:06And Hudson quite within his rights to run back.
10:10And Hudson was watching the ball all the way through.
10:12And Hudson's bat certainly looked like it sort of dipped out there at the last minute just to trap that ball.
10:18But see if he can catch that again.
10:21He's bowled him.
10:26He's bowled him.
10:26He's bowled him.
10:45the right-handed batsman getting through that gap between bat and pad and andrew hudson's on his way
10:5127 of 33 balls 60 for one
10:58right in the batsman of considerable reputation averaging 35.
11:0578th match in one day cricket
11:07and it's the end of the over 60 for one
11:29the wicket from the uh uae bowler andrew hudson baldnik can crop through the gap
11:35good view here from the stump camp and we're just getting through there
11:46fine shot
11:49and that whistles away in the sunshine there it's very difficult to pick up the white ball with the
11:53whitish grass whisked away before terrific shot from gary kirsten
11:57oh another cracking shot never mind the footwork
12:0910 off the over 70 for one
12:12rdi debut from uae shocker dukanwala
12:22in the bowling shocker dukanwala now into the attack 72 for one
12:2613-0 is gone a good the emirates and he put south africa into that
12:31whole toss and that's gone all the way to the wide of mid-wicket for four more runs umpire
12:40ramaswami there vigorously
12:48kirsten sweeps that one's going down towards deep backwood square leg they're going for the second
12:54a bit of hesitation by cronier but in the end he makes it comfortable and that is gary kirsten's 50
13:01well played kirsten
13:0551 deliveries for his 50 five fours and one sixer
13:11which is a very fine run rate
13:14he goes back rocks onto the back foot steers it out squarish of the wicket towards deep cover
13:22and that is 100 on the board for south africa in the 19th over
13:30second
13:37come on come up
13:37come up
13:38come up
13:43the batsman get back he says get back and sadik mohammed alongside me was almost throwing
13:57the ball in there i think it was a very narrow escape for the kirsten i think a direct head
14:05would have been a very close decision the firm push towards mid-on
14:13well i think he might have been back again given a direct hit but it was still a moment
14:19of panic for us a little bit good firm push off the back foot 110 for what a very good
14:38start
14:39so splendid scene here with pakistan um sorry south africa sea green shirts i think pakistan
14:54well that's a terrific blow huge blue amazing blow that sticks all the way
15:09i guess for a while the fielder who was underneath it thought well this is mine and then suddenly
15:15he looked towards the sky and he went on and on and that's uh yeah what a great shot there
15:23coming out of the face and playing flight is delivered lifted up very nice and clean for
15:28quick
15:29that's cornea's first boundary
15:34and we've actually reached halfway 25 overs 142 for one
15:41and make him play on the back foot
15:48there's a really bad ball
15:50they'll be looking for three the 150 comes up
15:57just one wicket down 151 south africa
16:03to play straight because the bowling is very easy you don't have to play across the with the cross bat
16:24and that's four rounds i think it is it was just a bit of a missed field at backward point
16:34the typical kirsten shot the field is in the right position they always have a man for kirsten
16:41backward of point he chopped it down that way but this is what happened
16:46this is the watch kirsten just keeping eye on the ball outside the offstand on the back foot
16:51so very easy for cornea tall man stretches down the front foot plays very straight
17:04and the 100 partnership comes up
17:07unheralded unapplauded around the ground
17:12another silent audience here at the moment
17:14they've posted the 100 of the partnership
17:17and kirsten has now become the highest scorer for south africa
17:21in one day in the world cup competition
17:24surpassing 79 by hudson
17:31against england at melbourne in the 1992 world cup
17:35about 14 matches 14 innings 604 runs at just above 50
17:4050 for the south african capital
18:09driven out once again towards a long off runs coming freely now end of the over 166 for emirates
18:22attack holds any fears for the south african batsmen who are absolutely top class
18:28and you can see it there that one almost hit with a nonchalant air towards the mid-wicket boundary before
18:36that was cronier's first fall
18:48extraordinary that he's got to 50 and such an attacking batsman and that's his first four not
18:52not his first boundary he did hit one back in the seats a little earlier on
18:55this he just dabs away and he'll look for two here and you'll get them he'll probably
19:01maybe get three if kirsten runs really quickly no they're not going to go
19:05and that's fair enough end of the oval 175 for one a lot of running whether the tactics were correct
19:14we've already discussed and we think in general
19:18the way that he's got to be able to do that and that's out
19:20and that's out cronier looking to hit it across across the line through the mid-wicket area misses it
19:25and a wicket for the uae captain nicely stumped
19:29176 for two men captain getting the captain stumped by a bassy
19:41there it is coming down the wicket passing gathering it the bails are off cronier is on his way
19:46and it is 176 for two
19:51because of this
19:52a little bit cronier was the batsman down the wicket and just got himself into a terrible knot
19:58in the end that's a a simple stumping so long as he caught it which he made no mistake with
20:04the cronier just getting it all wrong he didn't get into a position to play any sort of shot and
20:09just ended up sort of hitting right across it here's the stump cam for you that's nice
20:15go through for a quick single that throw wasn't the best of ones and that was a shocking run bad
20:29call from kirsten cullinan uh reacted and went all pretty good of him really except that kirsten's a
20:37man in he's virtually hit it straight at him cullinan's not the slowest between the wickets and would
20:43have been run out by miles the applause goes up in anticipation for kirsten's 100 is that going to
20:52be 80 99 now they're turning for the 100 run and that is the 100 for gary kirsten well played gary
20:59kirsten the first south african player to get a hundred in world cup competitions there's the crowd
21:07applauding a very fine knock by gary kirsten just took 105 balls one sixer six fours a strike date of
21:1695.23 and a very pleased man he'll be scored 100 against england in the test match series set himself
21:25on on the century road as it were in test cricket and now not his first in one day internationals but
21:36he's first in world cup in fact south africa's first in world cup
21:56gets him away this time down towards deep square leg they're going to through for the second
22:01200 goes up on the board for south africa orbit so they've never been pushed to score on a regular
22:10basis and that i think they should have been that's right i think i'll second that opinion of yours you
22:16know i have to put them for pressure well struck away by kirsten wide very wide and somebody's got
22:23a hundred well somebody got naughty might have hit that before certainly can't bowl it that full and that
22:28wide wide to somebody who's seen the ball as big as gary kirsten is now yeah that's an excellent shot
22:34from gary kirsten to the cover in 50 by the end of the 50th over carries on like that he will he's hit
22:45that hard very hard the two field is out there he split them both it's run away for four so i think if
22:51if he gets 150 south africa gets 320 i think well i think it depends if he repairs the shot and team
23:00not out so equalling his highest score and now beating it goes to one one seven one one six
23:07against england up for bootberg in the last series and so that's because home summer as it were just a
23:15few months ago a couple of months ago just around the corner the dreaded double nelson two two two and
23:21two and what a wonderful record that is to date there is a little bit and that could be out it'll be a good
23:31catch don't think we got a finger on it
23:36well i think sultan zarwani blaming the uh fielder on the square leg why didn't he come in and there's
23:47the top page by kirsten and really went high and the ryan sometimes around the captain of uae went
23:54underneath running backward and i don't think he was going to get anywhere near it because he was not in
23:59the right side of the ball that's a good shot that's a marvelous shot and it's four more through a
24:15missed field 2 36 for two strike let's have a look again at the uh mishap that happened just now
24:26kirsten a top edge ball went reasonably high not sky high and the uae captain zarwani
24:32i'm busy started to buzz as soon as he started to go in circles he was always in trouble and as you can
24:38see no touch that's a big hit
24:48yeah that's a really great blow kirsten marching down the wicket before the ball was delivered and he
25:01took a full advantage of incoming ball and there it says he was that and charging before the ball
25:07was delivered and he hit it to the mid wicket for six that's a that's the shot of a man who's been at
25:22the wicket for a while yes a great shot from kirsten you know using his feet very well on the spinners
25:29and sultan zarwani who's bowled very chronically so far but got lashed out by kirsten there's the
25:35replay again stepping out and playing it through the extra cover for fall good timing good balance and
25:42everything of the wicket and of the bowling to get some confidence for the oncoming games
25:49his job also to feed the strike isn't it to the man with a hundred and the man who's playing all
25:57the shots if cullinan gets a one off every ball he faces he's done the job that's the 250 for south
26:03africa with eight overs to go so 300 very much on the cards here just depending on how much longer
26:11that this man stays at the crease fantastic shot from kirsten through the back foot point for four
26:21gave us some room for himself and placed it down to the backward point an excellent piece of balance
26:28on the back foot there it is what he came forward to start with and made some room and then played it
26:33behind the square before thank you robin that's an almighty go back into the rose six runs signaled by
26:52empire ramaswamy 261 well he's been in terrific form gary kirsten and now he's playing all sorts of shots
27:11giving the bowling no chance at all
27:14and we are looking at what tony 320 odd
27:28it could be anything at this rate because if gary kirsten really decides to lay into it very fast outfield
27:39very regular bounce on this pitch is excellent for batting very difficult to bowl on
27:44and there he goes again this time square of the wicket going down towards deep backward point
27:51it's cut off and that's 150 for gary kirsten
27:58150 not out 135 deliveries three sixers as they return with such force to international cricket
28:05beautifully played such a clip of the toes and wonderful timing and sports and the rigget and
28:15there you've seen the best of darryl cullinan
28:20it's absolutely beautiful shot by cullinan picture of his toes so elegantly but no getting anywhere near it
28:28look at that poise the perfectly balanced darryl cullin
28:34morrow and that'll be courtesy of travel walgie who uh priming us around this world cup circuit
28:41kirsten's score now is the eighth highest in one day internationals and the partnership is now one
28:55short of its hundredth run and that is the hundred of the partnership
28:58two big partnerships of 100 plus this one and the one for the second wicket 116 between cronia and
29:14kirsten and the first wicket 60 between hudson and kirsten 58 minutes it took to get 100 of the partnership
29:23just 90 deliveries
29:30dropped him
29:33well that's bad luck for the bowler straight in very well bowled he's first appeared with these
29:39leg spinners and darryl cullin took the bait
29:45perfect height just the height where you can reverse the palms and take it comfortably give with the ball
29:50so it says in the textbook
29:59this one gone towards deep mid-on
30:03i think the captain will not be very pleased with mother russain as we are looking at that job catch
30:09the captain bowling cullinan comes out into the covers and that was in and out of his part
30:20full tasks and summarily dispatched to deep backward square leg for four more runs
30:31these are the perfect batting conditions it'll be very interesting to see
30:35how the south africans roll on this
30:51there was a moment when the fielder looked as if he's getting across
30:54and actually wanted to get across the right hand went out but it was over the line and that's six
30:59more to gary kirsten where it is again out comes kirsten up she goes and there's the fielder not in
31:10your picture at the moment but he that there's a fielder now coming into your picture for one moment
31:15it looked it might go to him but it cleared the fence
31:24single on to the offside and kirsten now becomes the highest scorer for south africa in one day internationals
31:32so that was that sixer by kirsten middle it well and there's that fielder johan samarasekra now
31:46bowling his ninth and what should be his last over there's just two overs left
31:52and cullinan gets him away off his toes down to deep backward square leg over the fence four more runs
31:58both kirsten say on middle and leg stump or outside the off stump not both at the same time
32:06kirsten needs 11 runs to become the highest scorer in one bears surpassing vivian richards 189.
32:18he's got this over to do it and let's see how he goes about it he's gone about it in the right way
32:23he's got four of them
32:35and there is that four with which he went the highest score of the world cup
32:44and he surpassed viv richards that was 181 against sri lanka at karachi i remember that very well
32:53i think we have to balance these records by saying that viv richards got just uh sri lanka
33:02and the all-time one against england and i think the privileges is battered this morning and right
33:07gone right through it in 384 well that score of 316 for two is south africa's highest in one days
33:17and that overhauls 314 which they got against new zealand
33:26second last ball and that's up in the air but falling in no man's land and the batsmen are going
33:33through for the second so kirsten's still in with a chance but he needs four more runs
33:38319 for two the last ball of the innings coming up
33:50arshad late bowling it and facing him is gary kirsten not out 186.
33:55he has not done it it is fielded there although there's a bit of a humble but the batsmen are
34:07restricted to two one usually don't say batsmen are restricted to two three hundred and twenty one
34:13for two at the end of the 50 overs that is the end of the south african innings
34:17gary kresten 188 of 159 balls four sixes 13 fours highest ever individual score in world cup matches
34:32of two is the 17th highest ever oda total by any team
35:02and the highest ever by south africa
35:07which is this world record of 189 in one day cricket i think gary kirsten
35:12will be slightly relieved that he didn't beat it because
35:15vivritus was against england old trafford and i think gary kirsten would prefer to do it on another
35:21occasion that's not to take anything away from the way he batted he batted superbly uh he ground his way in
35:27as he always does and of course he's a great punisher of those bowlers who do not keep a very
35:32accurate line at him he nudges the ball to the left side chops it away in the off and those are the
35:37bowlers who really came in for some hefty punishment i thought samara sakura as chister
35:42john hitter is saying was the best for the new ball one of the 39
35:53good shot
36:06beautiful stroke lovely stroke
36:14i spoke to soon about matthews
36:19beautiful time shot this just off the sweet part just pacing the ball do all the work
36:25back of the square and third man no chance of cutting that off
36:29we have a very very good batting surface we've already seen the capabilities of these
36:33these rdi debut from uae ganesh malvanganam
36:43would at any other team in this competition
36:49that's a great shot again no man it's third man
36:56beautiful four and it's quick out there
36:58but no hesitation they're not in all set africa at all
37:07the outfield was quicker this morning than we thought it might be with all the
37:11rain that it's had it's certainly quickened up during the afternoon
37:14pollock strikes me as a bowler who's
37:16quite a youngster's got one of a rhythm he's good to gets very close to the stumps to pull the ball and
37:21and batsman look to pick up runs they look for the ball wide of the stumps but pollock it's very close
37:37and that's akpire south africa are celebrating the umpires are meeting
37:48well you don't know how good a catch this is south africa very confident nobody's
37:53worried portman has gone across very quickly portman died to his left that's the wicket
37:59keeper
38:02doctor gives him out so as our side goes out
38:11now catch the keeper dives across let's take another look at it
38:15so there's the edge watch book milan
38:18this is what the square leg umpire would have seen and if you remember the umpires had to
38:27get together to decide what it carried
38:32beautiful catch great catch 24 for one and there's alan donald 81 wickets from 58 matches
38:48the leading wicket taker in south africa one data
38:53is used as the first change currently by south africa in 50 over a side cricket
39:01oh what a great beautiful ball much quicker angled in as the ball angled in the keeper almost went
39:08down the leg side then fought his way back and held a superb catch and the second wicket goes down
39:14the 42.
39:25well of course for an act couldn't get back i think he's out he looks very close and they call for the
39:30third umpires adjudication
39:34well that was very sad
39:35yes i think it was a there's very sad familiar saying it to this yeah and chronic tick that stems
39:46off and he's out by miles well what a sad end for mirror
39:50that's a nice shot that's going to be four runs
40:12just lean into it
40:14and it's mcmillan now into the attack
40:19hold them
40:19hold them 60 for four
40:28and this ball is right on the spot
40:32beating the man for pace and just knocking back that uh off stump 60 for four
40:37and i suppose chissie that really wasn't all that surprising because uh for a couple of overs
40:52now we've been seeing quite a few of those stumps and this really is a good ball pitching just
40:57outside off stump coming back and knocking the top of that up stump 62 for five
41:01and
41:04that's hedged and out two slips retained for donald and quite rightly so nicely caught by andrew hudson
41:15crony are delighted everybody delighted
41:18bat with nobody at all and that's the good catch taken by hudson so 68 then for six
41:25uae captain sultan zharwani was struck on the head without a helmet by anna donald bouncer
41:41and that's hit him straight on the head no ball
41:45i would tend to think that he overstepped
41:48i hope to goodness he was wearing a helmet no he isn't he isn't he's wearing a
41:52a floppy hat which is enough to intimidate any quick bowler and he's dead accurate
41:59straight on the side of the head he took his eye off the ball
42:02and hit him straight on the head i don't know why he didn't wear the helmet
42:12out court cover comfortably cronyer the catcher mcmillan the bowler his second wicket and
42:19the uae captain he said about that shot to look very much amateur worse than amateur
42:25rather in the style was terrible but a good straight catch to crony and the second wicket for mcmillan
42:37and that's out
42:38uae ninth wicket partnership of eighties is the second highest of all time
43:01arshad loik and shaukat dhukanwala
43:11oh that's a cracking shot
43:18there's some very fine players would be very proud to hit alan donald
43:20jox carlis continuing he's pushed away
43:32carlis again to arshad ray
43:36well cracking shot that absolutely nothing wrong with that at all
43:40and that is it the end of the merge south africa win by 169 runs well played south africa congratulations
43:56to them on their win but well fought arshad lay and shaukat dhukanwala
44:02well that was a spirited performance by the emirates side they started off with all good intent played
44:07their shots but slumped to 72 for edkand dhukanwala scoring 43 and 40 respectively got them up to 152 for
44:16eight the bowling of south africas was disciplined and penetrative you would expect donald to be so
44:23three for 21 from his 10 overs a great performance and brian mcmillan much underused i felt in the
44:29winter down when south africa were playing england he took three for 11 off eight overs
44:37so
44:43so
44:54so
