00:00What is good? It is 105.1 The Bounce. I'm Leisha B. from The Morning Rollout,
00:04and today is a day that I really had on my bucket list, and I'm so excited that I get
00:11to sing these words right now. I am talking to the gorgeous, iconic, singing down boots,
00:22Tosh from the SWV Girl. How are you doing today?
00:25Oh, baby. I'm doing great. Thanks for having me.
00:29Thank you for being here because we were chatting offline, but this is something that I've dreamed
00:34about when I first started my career, and I never thought that I would be talking to you
00:39right now. So the fact that I am.
00:42You're going to make me go put some cream on my eyes.
00:49Girl, no. No, no, no. I just want to give you your flowers, and I wanted to show you how
00:54much I do love you because I know we were talking offline that, you know, you guys have
00:59been iconic for decades, and just the longevity of your career and how you're able to touch
01:05me and my mother.
01:07The capability that me and my mother, my mom knows nothing about music.
01:10Like, I have to put her on to people. So the mere fact that she put me on, and she was
01:16like, no, no, no, no. If you're going to be in music, you need to know music.
01:20I love your mama.
01:24Yes.
01:25Aviva Brown, she knows what's up when it comes to SWB, okay?
01:28Come on, sis.
01:30But I'm super excited because you're also coming to Detroit this Friday, which thank you for
01:34kicking off my birthday month in style.
01:37Okay. Happy birthday early.
01:41How old will you be?
01:42Happy birthday to me. Oh, my God.
01:44How old will you be?
01:45I'll be 28.
01:46You're such a sweet. My knees worked. Everything worked when I was 28.
01:53I'll give you my good knees, girl. It's good.
01:55Oh, girl, thank you.
01:58But speaking of that show, are you excited? Like, how are you feeling gearing up to Friday?
02:03I feel amped and amazing. First of all, Detroit always comes through. I mean, it doesn't matter
02:10if we come three times a week, they show up. They show up ready to party, and we love, love,
02:16love singing to them. So we are extremely excited because this is one of our favorite markets.
02:21Detroit is on point. And now Detroit is almost kind of like my new home base. I've moved to Ohio.
02:28I'm only an hour from Detroit, so I roll over to Detroit all the time.
02:33Well, girl, I'm going to have to see you outside in these Detroit streets.
02:38Look for the food, look for the hair, and I go to the mall. Somerset in the house.
02:43Somerset changes lives, okay?
02:46So when you first get to Detroit, what's the first food spot that you have to hit up?
02:50Oh, gosh. My friend, Anthony, took me to the soul food spot because I don't eat a lot of meat,
02:56but what I do love is some good collard greens, macaroni and cheese, dressing, yams, cornbread,
03:01and some baked chicken. Oh, my God. I'm drawing a blank on this spot.
03:06Is it fixings?
03:08Damn it, fixings. Yes. And what's so crazy about it is my friend owns Kevin, Kevin the owner,
03:14the creator of it. That's my friend. Why can't I fix it? Remember his thing? Fixings! Yes!
03:20Fixings is good, girl. I knew exactly what you was talking about the moment you talked about it.
03:24Yes, because I used to go to the one in L.A., and now I'm like, ooh, there's one here,
03:29and he took me like a couple weeks ago, and how did I forget that? That's age.
03:34That's just a lot on your mind. You're preparing for a show, girl. You're worried about choreography,
03:38making sure that you know your lyrics. There's a lot going on.
03:40Girl, yes, because these days I will forget a step in a hot second and pretend like it was them.
03:46Y'all are wrong, not me.
03:53And speaking of the sisterhood that you guys have, just the longevity of creating a sisterhood,
04:01just in general. Like, I'm in a sorority, and I've been in my sorority for now eight years.
04:07And just built Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. Thank you.
04:10So I understand sisterhood in that aspect, and that takes a lot to, you know, build and cultivate,
04:18even when we're out of state with each other. So what's the glue that holds you guys together,
04:22especially when you bring in the professional aspect? Because that can change, James.
04:28Absolutely. Maturity. This is 33 years in the making. It didn't just happen overnight.
04:33We had to go through growing pains, fights, cussing each other out, separations.
04:38But the maturity over the years, the experiences brought us together and kept us together.
04:44Right.
04:44And it works now because I understand when to step back, when to move forward, when to hug,
04:50when to say shut up. We understand that now.
04:53Where is you going to go through those things in your 20s?
04:55We were babies. We were still trying to figure out how to wash correctly.
04:59Correctly. But now, of course, we have families. The Coco and Lily has grandkids.
05:05We've matured so much that we understand that when we're on the stage, this is something we love.
05:09We've been blessed to be able to do this as a job.
05:13Right.
05:14There's people who go to an office and can't stand it.
05:16But our office is the stage, and we love it. We appreciate it, and we want to keep doing it.
05:22And you can tell that. Like, I think that one of the – I haven't talked about my mom a lot,
05:25but one of the things that she told me when I was growing up about getting a job was making sure that I'm happy.
05:31You're not going to love your job every day, but be happy to do it.
05:34And every time that you guys are on stage or just speaking in interviews,
05:38you can clearly tell that you love what you do.
05:41So I applaud y'all for not losing that joy because I know the energy would be crazy, girl.
05:46I know y'all got stories.
05:48There's something else we learned. The energy is what, what?
05:51Because people don't understand there's so much more that comes to it than just getting on behind a mic
05:57and sitting for people.
05:58Oh, good Lord. Say it again for the people in the back that can't hear.
06:03So that just means that people need to fill these seats on Friday because y'all been through it.
06:06Come through, folks. Come through. Let's get down. Let's party. It's Friday.
06:11We're going to have a ton of fun.
06:13And I've been actually up at the Aretha maybe two or three times in June.
06:19I went to see PJ Morton. I went to see Fantasia.
06:23I've been rolling because that's now my new home.
06:25I can roll over to Detroit whenever I want.
06:28I love that. First of all, PJ was a time.
06:31Were you there?
06:32Yes.
06:33Ah!
06:34PJ was.
06:35I love Kevin Ross. So good. So good.
06:37And Kevin's from my home, so I had to show up.
06:39I love Kevin Ross.
06:41I love that, man. But it's about you right now.
06:44I know, right, right. That's us. SWV in the house.
06:47Yes, SWV. So when you look back at starting until now,
06:52what's a moment that still gives you chills and reminds you that you are grateful to be here?
06:57Because we were just talking about being grateful and being blessed.
07:00What's that moment that still sits with you that still gives you chills and reminds you of that?
07:04Well, I think recently I got chills.
07:07Last summer when we were on tour with Xscape, we had to do the garden.
07:11That was one of the steps. First of all, the garden is iconic.
07:14It's been there before I was born.
07:16And so many things have happened and taken place and been exposed in the garden.
07:21When we went there, the show was, for one, sold out.
07:26And then we were able to close that night.
07:29And just every song, every beat, every step, the crowd was with us.
07:36Then the final song, we did anything.
07:39The remix version, Method Man steps out on stage and Madison Square Garden exploded.
07:45It was like calling the bomb squad because it just, he blew it up.
07:50And it was, it was the best night I've had in a while.
07:54It was just, you realize it's been 33 years and it's still like this.
07:59It's still like this.
08:01I can't wake up enough and say thank you.
08:04Every time I see a pretty cloud or just thank you, just thank you.
08:08Wow. I can't, I can't imagine that feeling.
08:11Just like knowing that all the work that you guys have put in individually and together
08:16has created moments like that.
08:19Like, first of all, Method Man with anything to remix.
08:23It was sick.
08:25Are we getting an anything remix moment on Friday?
08:28I don't know. I just had to ask.
08:30Well, now we always do the anything remix.
08:33I just had to make sure.
08:34I can't say if Wu-Tang is going to show up.
08:37I can't say that.
08:39But I think a version of them will show up.
08:44Hey, we can take whatever we can get, okay?
08:46If somebody wants to fill in for Old Dirty, holler at me.
08:52I put my hat in the ring.
08:53I volunteer as tribute.
08:54Thank you so much.
08:57But we've talked about this a little bit already,
09:00but you've watched fans grow up with your music.
09:03You've watched fans bring their own kids to your shows.
09:06Like, what's one fan interaction that's really stuck with you?
09:11I think it will probably have to be the younger generation.
09:15There's a group of young ladies.
09:17They're adorable.
09:1821, I think one was 15.
09:2321, 20, 15, and 17.
09:26They created fan pages of SWV.
09:30One for me, one for Coco, one for Levy.
09:33While we were on tour with Jodeci two years ago,
09:36they decided to pull their money together.
09:39And one of them, I think they had a parent who brought them to the show in Kansas City.
09:44We didn't even know they were coming.
09:46They just showed up, and they had gifts and things that they had made.
09:49And it was just so overwhelming that these babies, they love us that much.
09:55So, of course, now we took them under our wing.
09:58They're our little sisters.
09:59I mean, it doesn't matter.
10:00Wherever we are, we're going to reach out to them.
10:02They call us all the time.
10:03They're just adorable.
10:05I love that way.
10:07Yeah.
10:08That just shows the power of what you guys have created.
10:11And do you know, like, what that magic sauce is?
10:14Because I feel like so many artists nowadays are trying to fight for what you guys have created.
10:19Girl, I can't tell you.
10:20It's nothing but a blessing from God.
10:22It's all because of him.
10:24He chose us.
10:24He put us in the position.
10:26And we can only follow what he's allowing us to do.
10:30Exactly.
10:31So, this might be a hard question for you,
10:32but I've always wanted to ask any one of the SWV ladies.
10:36I know that you guys sing all the classics,
10:38all the hits that we absolutely require you to sing every time.
10:43Require.
10:43It's a song that you're just like, okay, ladies.
10:46Actually, let me pull the mic out to y'all so y'all can sing it.
10:50Well, every night, we don't have to hand them the mic.
10:53They take it and sing weak for us.
10:56They just take it.
10:58We'll be like, hold on, give us a shot.
11:01I bet y'all have the backgrounds and harmonies.
11:04You don't even have to have the background.
11:05Look, one night last summer on tour,
11:08the sound went out in Dallas.
11:10And I tell you what, it was like we never skipped a beat.
11:13The audience just took over, sang the song with us.
11:16We gave them an ad-lib here and there, and they did the rest.
11:19It was phenomenal.
11:20I feel like that is going to be a beautiful situation if that happens at the Aretha,
11:24on the open water.
11:25Everyone's singing weak.
11:26A good summer night.
11:30Oh, God.
11:31And I just hope it's cool.
11:33Because Lord knows, it was hot as hell out there for PJ and Fantasia.
11:38Okay.
11:39And you would think the water would add some breeze.
11:42No, it did not.
11:44Well, we're going to have to pray to God above and give us a nice little wind,
11:47just a little whooshin.
11:48Okay.
11:49We're going to bring the fans.
11:50Where them fans at?
11:52Hey, and you know they're going to have them.
11:53So I want to play a quick little game with you,
11:59just to get a sense of who you are, who Coco is, who Lele is.
12:04So it's going to be who's most likely.
12:06Are you ready?
12:07Uh-huh.
12:07Okay.
12:08Who's most likely to start the pre-show prayer?
12:11We have a road manager, Neville Williams.
12:13He leads the prayer every night.
12:15I mean, if we all running late, he will stop us.
12:17Hey, hey, hey.
12:18We got to say thank you real quick.
12:20Hey, SWV on three, one, two, three.
12:22Yeah, no, the prayer is going to always go down through Neville Williams.
12:25I know that's right, Neville.
12:26Get them together.
12:27Tell them to stop and be praying.
12:28No matter what.
12:30Okay.
12:31So who's most likely to hit the high note without warming up?
12:35Coco.
12:36First of all, I can't hit high notes.
12:40Mine stopped right at the top of the elevator, the top of the ladder.
12:44It's not going any further.
12:45Just six feet.
12:46That's it.
12:47Hey, girl, the pocket that you sit in, we love it.
12:50I'm comfortable.
12:51We love it.
12:52Right there.
12:53But okay, Coco, hitting the high note.
12:56Uh-huh.
12:57So who's most likely to show up to Soundcheck late but still slay the showdown?
13:01That would be Lele.
13:02She's late for everything.
13:04I mean, she was probably born July.
13:08She was supposed to come June 8th, but she wasn't born until July 17th.
13:12Because she's late for everything.
13:16But she gives her all on stage.
13:19It's so funny because I feel like I would, you know, yeah.
13:23Oh, Lele is late in French.
13:27Lele.
13:28I love it.
13:29I love it.
13:29Okay.
13:30So who's most likely to bring the most bags on tour?
13:33I think that might be me.
13:37My, I, you know what?
13:38I, it is me.
13:39I tend to overpack.
13:41I bring all kinds of stuff and don't use nothing.
13:45Hey.
13:45Nothing.
13:46In case you need an outfit that you didn't think of.
13:48And I don't wear them.
13:49I wear a, you know, one day I'm going to go on tour with a pair of sweatpants and about
13:53five t-shirts and I'm going to be straight.
13:55But until then, I'm going to pack everything in my closet and not wear it.
13:58And complain that my bags are heavy.
14:01And then I'll buy more stuff on the road.
14:05And you always have to prepare for that.
14:06So you need a separate bag just for that.
14:08Oh, good Lord.
14:09It's just too much.
14:10That will be me.
14:11And then last one.
14:12Who is most likely to keep it all the way real?
14:17Now define real.
14:19We have Coco who's like narky real.
14:24She's going to be the diva realist.
14:26You might not like her realness.
14:29Lily is going to be hilariously real.
14:31Her comedic timing and honesty is unmatched.
14:37And I think it takes me a second to be real.
14:40But if you push me quickly, you're going to get it quickly.
14:44Okay.
14:45I think that's good.
14:46All the different types of realness.
14:48Yes.
14:49We have a range of realness.
14:51Exactly.
14:52Exactly.
14:53Okay.
14:53So a couple more questions that I have for you.
14:57This is one that I had to ask.
15:00Are there any R&B artists from today's era that's caught your attention?
15:04Or you can answer it this way.
15:06If you could remix any SWV song with a current artist or producer, who would you choose?
15:11The funny thing is, we just saw Beyonce a couple weeks ago in Atlanta.
15:19And of course, she's transcended time.
15:21She's just all world.
15:23But I would love for SWV and Beyonce to do party together.
15:29Some kind of party remix.
15:31I love that song.
15:33Oh, my gosh.
15:34And if it was like a Destiny's Child, SWV.
15:38Oh, that would be so nice.
15:40And then y'all come out on Act 3 tour.
15:42Oh.
15:44I'm just saying, Parkwood.
15:46You better call my sister.
15:47Get rid of this double chin, because I can't stand.
15:50Did you see how freaking amazing them look?
15:53Those women goddesses look damn amazing.
15:58Yeah.
15:58I'm going to have to get in everybody's gym to get rid of this gut and stomach.
16:02I can't stand next to them.
16:03I'm not worthy.
16:04Yeah.
16:04You look good.
16:06But there's still time.
16:07You know she's going to take a little breather before Act 3 even happens.
16:11That girl is in rehearsal right now.
16:13Probably.
16:14You right.
16:15She probably is back at the studio cutting Act 3.
16:19Romy and Sarah is coming out on the next one.
16:22Sarah don't want to mess with us.
16:24Sarah is backstage being like, I don't want to see them.
16:26Way too much drama for me.
16:28That's not my ministry.
16:30That's what he said.
16:31Exactly.
16:32Okay.
16:32And one last question.
16:34When it comes to your artistry and it comes to just the legacy that is SWV, what words do you want to share to your fans, to the people who have held true, to your day ones, and even the people that are finally coming from beneath that rock?
16:49Praise God.
16:51One word you said?
16:53In one word.
16:56Absolutely.
16:58Without the fans, without the support, without just anything that they provide an artist, we would be nothing.
17:07You can record 800 million songs, but if there's no one to listen to them and appreciate them, they'll just be on your closet or sitting on your desk somewhere.
17:15But because the songs that we put out resonated with so many people and still to this day, and they still support us, grateful, thankful, amazingly loving, just appreciation is all we can say.
17:32Well, I'm definitely one of y'all's biggest fans on Spotify.
17:37If you see somebody streaming a bunch of times, it's probably me.
17:41And I'm not going to be mad at it anytime.
17:45No problem.
17:45First of all, thank you.
17:48And Lele.
17:49Lele.
17:50Everybody.
17:50Lele.
17:51Because she's always Lele.
17:54That's why I started saying Lele.
17:57Lele.
17:58Lele.
17:59But no, thank you guys for just everything that you've created, not only as someone who just loves music in this industry, but also as a singer myself.
18:06Y'all are Blueprint.
18:09I have been in my basement singing runs, trying to be just like y'all.
18:14Oh, that's right, girl.
18:15And the fact that I'm now being able to speak to you is just such a full circle moment.
18:21And I'm super excited for Friday.
18:23I'm going to be outside with all of Detroit, get to our lives.
18:27Well, make sure I see you so we can hug each other.
18:31Y'all heard it here first.
18:32We go ahead.
18:33But thank you so much, Tosh.
18:36I can't wait to see you on Friday, girl.
18:39Yes, ma'am.
18:40Bye.
