00:00beloved tonight we gather around a glorious certainty that most of christendom scarcely dares to speak of the unwavering assurance of our salvation in one john five thirteen the apostle declares with unflinching clarity
00:17i have written these things so that you may know that you have eternal life that is not soft hope it is sure certainty rooted in the enduring promises of god and in two peter one ten we are commanded to make your calling and election sure assurance is not an optional luxury it is god's gift and his divine expectation over the course of these moments together we will trace assurance from the promise of scripture
00:46to the inward witness of the spirit and finally to the outward evidence of a sanctified life we will confront the common obstacles misguided confidence gnawing guilt wavering faith and moral compromise and we will lay hold of the reformation truth confirmed by scripture that saving faith includes a real assurance deep substantive and steadfast
01:11this is not psychological comfort it's theological conviction it's not phony optimism it's gospel truth let us enter scripture together and discover how assurance is both commanded and cultivated enjoyed and exercised in christ alone
01:27amen keynote one assurance is biblically certain and commanded there was once a young man in our church earnest zealous and deeply troubled he had come to every bible study memorized
01:40the first verses served with joy but one evening he sat across from me with tears in his eyes and said pastor i believe in christ but i'm terrified that i'm not truly saved his words echo the cry of many hearts they live in fear not faith doubting wavering uncertain
01:59but god never intended his children but god never intended his children to live in spiritual suspense he has spoken with clarity
02:07in 1 john 5 13 the apostle john writes these things i have written to you who believe in the name of the son of god
02:17so that you may know that you have eternal life
02:20that is a divine statement not a suggestion god wants you to know not guess not assume not hope in worldly terms
02:30but no assurance is not some emotional high or mystical experience it is grounded in the very word of god
02:39that's why peter says in 2 peter 1 10 be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election
02:46it's a command not for the super spiritual but for all believers this is not just about feeling saved
02:55it's about being diligent to pursue what god has promised the man who lives in constant fear of losing
03:02his salvation has misunderstood the very nature of grace salvation is not held together by your strength
03:09it is secured by christ's righteousness and sealed by the holy spirit the believer who immerses himself
03:17in the word will find that assurance flows from knowing who god is and what he has said
03:22that young man he later came to understand that his doubt wasn't a sign of lost salvation
03:28but of spiritual growth god used it to drive him deeper into scripture into prayer and into obedience
03:35and from that journey a solid assurance was born not because he felt worthy but because he trusted the one who is
03:44keynote 2 three progressive levels of assurance let me tell you about anna
03:49an elderly woman who had walked with the lord for over 60 years
03:54yet near the end of her life she asked quietly pastor how can i know for sure i'm going to heaven
04:01i opened my bible and showed her the threefold foundation of assurance what i call the progressive
04:09staircase of christian certainty the first step is cognitive assurance this is the base it begins with
04:18what god has said scripture lays down the promise whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
04:24everlasting life john 3 16 anna had believed this for decades she remembered the verse but fear
04:31had clouded her trust i reminded her that assurance starts not with how we feel but what god has
04:38declared his word never changes the second step is subjective assurance the internal witness of the
04:45holy spirit romans 8 16 says the spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of god
04:53anna smiled i do feel his presence sometimes this isn't about emotionalism
05:00it's about the spirit confirming within us what the word has declared but there's a third step and it's the strongest one
05:08behavioral assurance this is what i call the moral test by this we know that we have come to know him if we keep his
05:16commandments in one john two three anna's life was marked by obedience love patience faith and repentance
05:22i told her your life has preached the gospel for decades you see assurance doesn't just sit on a shelf
05:29it grows it matures it deepens as we walk in obedience guided by the spirit anchored in the word
05:35anna closed her bible tears rolling down her cheeks not of fear but of joy those three levels
05:43promise believed spirit confirmed obedience lived form the strong cord of assurance doubt may creep in
05:50but it cannot undo what god has secured christian assurance is not fantasy it is fact progressively
05:58confirmed by a faithful life in christ keynote three the reformation's corrections a few years ago
06:04i met a seminary student who had just returned from studying abroad in rome he had visited churches
06:10rich in history but filled with uncertainty they had ornate cathedrals and beautiful rituals he said
06:17but not one person i spoke to could say they were certain of their salvation he paused and added they
06:24thought it was prideful to be sure that belief isn't new it was central to roman catholic theology before
06:31the reformation and in many ways it still is the idea that assurance is arrogant that no one can truly know
06:39they're saved is a lie that held countless souls in bondage for centuries but the reformers led by men
06:46like martin luther and john calvin rose up with the word of god in hand and declared you can't know
06:53because god has spoken calvin taught that assurance is not a bonus to faith it is the very essence of it
07:01if salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in christ alone then what are we really saying if we doubt it
07:09that god might fail that christ's sacrifice might not be enough reformation tore down the walls of
07:16religious fear by restoring confidence in scripture the reformers rejected the notion that human merit
07:23church rituals or continual penance could earn favor with god instead they pointed us back to the bible
07:31where the apostle paul says in romans 8 one there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in
07:39christ jesus you see the tragedy wasn't just theological it was personal people like that seminary student
07:48met in rome well meaning devout sincere we're living in fear rather than faith that's why the reformers
07:58insisted on sola scriptural and solified the truth of the gospel gives birth to the certainty of assurance
08:05and that is the truth we preach today we are not saved by feelings we are saved by christ's finished work
08:13and we are assured not because we look inward but because we look upward to a god who never lies and
08:20gospel that never fails keynote four sanctification is the proof of salvation i once had a conversation
08:27with a man who had grown up in church gone on mission trips even taught sunday school but later in life
08:34he walked away from the faith entirely he began to embrace sin deny truth and reject the gospel he once
08:42claimed when i asked him why he said i guess i was never really sure if it was real anyway sadly his
08:49story is not unique the bible speaks of it in one john 2 19 they went out from us but they were not of us
08:58you see true assurance is not only what we believe it's what we become sanctification is the visible
09:06evidence of salvation it's the moral test the fruit bearing proof that the root is alive when someone
09:13claims to be saved but shows no sign of transformation no hunger for holiness no turning from sin no love for
09:21christ then we have reason to ask if faith they profess is genuine jesus said in matthew 7 16 you will know
09:30them by their fruits that's not just a warning it's a confirmation a truly regenerate heart doesn't remain
09:37in rebellion it longs to obey it grieves over sin and it grows more like christ over time i remember a
09:46woman named teresa who was saved later in life she came out of a background of bitterness addiction and
09:54brokenness but when the lord saved her the change was unmistakable she devoured scripture served the
10:02church faithfully and poured out grace to others her assurance didn't come from a one-time prayer it
10:09came from a life that bore the unmistakable fruit of sanctification sanctification is not perfection
10:15it's progress it's the ongoing work of the spirit making us more like jesus and as that transformation
10:21unfolds it becomes a mirror reflecting our salvation we don't work to be saved but once saved we work
10:28out our salvation with fear and trembling philippians 2 12 christian assurance shines brightest in a life
10:35that is being sanctified that is where doubt is defeated and where confidence in christ becomes
10:40unmistakably real keynote five obstacles to assurance and their remedy a young woman once sat across from me
10:49after a sunday evening service she had grown up in the church could quote scripture fluently and had
10:56served faithfully in ministry but with trembling hands and tear filled eyes she asked why do i still feel
11:04so unsure of my salvation i know the truth but i still wake up afraid that god has turned his face from me
11:11her question is more common than most believers would admit even the most devoted christians can
11:18struggle with a lack of assurance and there are real reasons for it some spiritual some emotional all
11:25deeply human for some it's guilt sin that hasn't been confessed or an unwillingness to believe that christ's
11:33blood truly cleanses every stain for others it's ignorance not understanding the promises of god that anchor the
11:40soul there are those plagued by spiritual immaturity constantly looking inward for proof instead of upward for
11:48grace and some like this young woman are simply overwhelmed by trials mistaking hardship for god's absence but
11:55scripture offers the remedy first assurance is rooted not in feelings but in facts god's word which declares
12:02that those who believe in christ have eternal life john 5 24 second the holy spirit testifies with our
12:09spirit that we are god's children romans 8 16 his inner witness is not based on emotion but on
12:16conviction conviction that leads to obedience repentance and love for righteousness i gently reminded her that
12:23feeling come and go but god's promises remain i asked her do you desire christ do you grieve sin
12:32do you long to obey through her tears she whispered yes i said then your assurance isn't absent it's
12:41simply clouded go back to the word confess what needs confessing and rest in the finished work of christ
12:50her story is a reminder that doubt doesn't always mean deception sometimes it means we need deeper truth
12:58firmer teaching and a clearer focus on god's character the remedy is not striving harder it's trusting deeper
13:06assurance is available it is promised and for the believer it is a certainty waiting to be embraced
13:13experienced through the word by the spirit through the word by the spirit and confirmed in a life of growing grace
13:20you
