An elementary school baseball team from Taipei is heading to the U.S. to compete in the Little League World Series, hoping to score Taiwan's first title in the competition since 1996 after disappointment in last year's final.

00:00These young sluggers are going to travel a long way to play baseball.
00:09They're headed for the sports heartland, America,
00:13to compete in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
00:20The team is from Dongyuan Elementary School in Taipei.
00:24They earned their spot after winning a regional tournament in South Korea earlier this month
00:30and will represent the whole of the Asia-Pacific region.
00:38Since 1969, teams from Taiwan have won the Little League World Series some 17 times,
00:46the most out of any Asian country.
00:48But it's been nearly three decades since the last title in 1996.
00:54Last year, a team from Taoyuan in northern Taiwan finished runner-up to a team from Florida.
01:01Leading this team is Lai Minnan, Dongyuan's longtime baseball coach,
01:06who has developed dozens of Taiwan's pro players.
01:10These elementary school students have already beaten the competition in Asia,
01:29proving they're the best in the region.
01:31But they're not stopping there.
01:34Now, they're headed to faraway Williamsport,
01:37where they want to stake their claim as best in the world.
