The excuse " I forgot" is among the most common heard among those found not wearing seat belts on buses, says the Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said some passengers even said they did not think it was necessary to fasten their seat belts in a "big, safe bus."

She said this reflects a worrying lack of awareness and sense of responsibility among drivers and passengers.

00:00The Malacca Road Transport Department has issued 153 summonses to express and tour bus drivers
00:06as well as passengers for failing to wear seatbelts between July 1st and July 29th.
00:13Its director, Siti Zarina Mohamed Yousop, said 135 summonses were issued to passengers
00:19and 18 to drivers. She said the violations were detected through undercover officers
00:24and regular enforcement operations. The seatbelt rule has been mandatory for express
00:29and tourist buses since July 1st.
