00:00Last week, users on 4chan claimed they uncovered a massive data breach
00:03tied to a women-only dating safety app.
00:06Now the company just spilled more tea on how deep the leak really goes.
00:10Tea, the app in question, exploded in popularity this month,
00:14climbing to the number one spot in the app store and attracting over 1.6 million users.
00:19Its mission? Let women share honest reviews about men in their area,
00:23from cheating and ghosting to serious criminal behavior.
00:26To get in, users must prove their women by uploading a selfie,
00:30sometimes even a government-issued ID,
00:32which the app states is what keeps Tea safe and supposedly deleted after being accepted.
00:37But with all the viral attention came frustration,
00:40as users complain about week-long waits just to get in.
00:43One Instagram user wrote,
00:44I've waited so long, it's not even interesting anymore.
00:47Tea responded saying real humans handle every verification to protect user safety
00:52and that they're working on ways to speed up approvals.
00:54But then came the first breach.
00:57According to 404 Media, users on the anonymous message board 4chan
01:01claimed they discovered an unsecured database hosted on Google's Firebase platform tied directly to Tea.
01:08Hackers reportedly accessed and shared users uploaded selfies, personal data,
01:12and in some cases even posted the content online.
01:15Tea confirmed the breach in a statement to 404 Media,
01:18saying it involved an older system and data dating back two years,
01:22including some direct messages.
01:24But 404 Media recently reported an update that had exposed significantly more user data
01:29than the first incident reported last week.
01:32According to the second report,
01:33an independent security researcher discovered that hackers could access private messages
01:37between users discussing sensitive topics like abortions, infidelity, and even phone numbers.
01:43While Tea initially claimed the breach was limited to outdated data from over two years ago,
01:47the newly discovered vulnerability affected a separate database containing messages sent as recently as last week.
01:53The researcher also found it was possible to trigger a push notification to every user on the app.
01:58The company has since posted an update to their Instagram, stating,
02:02We have recently learned that some direct messages were accessed as part of the initial incident.
02:07Out of the abundance of caution, we have taken the affected system offline.
02:11Now some users who never even made it past the waitlist are demanding their data be deleted entirely.
02:16Others are calling for a class action lawsuit.
02:18And for many women, this breach is about more than just stolen data, it's about broken trust.
02:24Platforms like Tea and even the popular Are We Dating the Same Guy Facebook groups
02:28were designed to help women protect themselves while dating.
02:30But unfortunately, these platforms keep failing at the one mission they promise,
02:34safety, security, and anonymity.
