00:1810.

00:19Luffy Punches Don Krieg The Krieg Pirate's attack on the floating

00:23restaurant Barate sees even the tough cooks who work there hard-pressed to combat Don

00:28Krieg. With gadgets and deadly weapons galore, Krieg seems untouchable, at least until Luffy

00:34charges straight at him. Krieg throws bombs and spiked ammunition at him, but that doesn't

00:40deter Luffy in the slightest. Krieg even whips out a cloak of spikes, but Luffy doesn't

00:46hesitate to punch him, even if it hurts him badly.

00:49It's a fantastic character moment illustrating Luffy's unwavering determination, even if

01:01we wince every time we see his punch land.

01:09Ace's Death Ace dying was always a possibility, given that

01:22the summit war was fought to prevent his execution, but watching it happen is still brutal. While

01:28Ace is initially rescued, some taunting from Akainu causes him to delay his escape. With

01:34his fire no match for Akainu's magma, Ace is overmatched. Even so, when Akainu targets Luffy,

01:41Ace steps in the way, taking Akainu's magma fist right through his torso.

01:46Sure, the fire obscures things a bit, but Ace still gets impaled. The death of a character

01:57is always a gut punch, but few are quite as literal as this one.

02:018. Lore escapes Flevance

02:16Trafalgar Lore has one of the most brutal backstories in One Piece. His country, Flevance, suffered

02:21a widespread disaster when amber-lead poisoned the inhabitants over multiple generations.

02:28The rapid onset of symptoms made others believe it to be a disease, leading to a war that led

02:33to most of the country's citizens being killed, including Lore's family. Along with suffering

02:39a mental breakdown, Lore is forced to escape the massacre by hiding among corpses to escape the

02:45country. And Lore is around 10 years old when this happens. It is heartbreaking to think of anyone

02:51enjoying all of that, much less a child.

02:597. The Don Quixote family is strung up

03:09Speaking of horrific backstories, One Piece villains get a few of their own. Doflamingo's

03:15dad decides that he and his family are going to stop being world nobles and go to live among regular

03:21people. Unfortunately, he underestimates just how much the citizens despise the world nobles for

03:27lording over, enslaving, and generally mistreating them for centuries. Doflamingo, his brother, and his

03:34dad are all strung up and tortured over a wall of fire. While we certainly don't condone everything the

03:46willed nobles have done, doing this to children is downright sickening.

03:556. Nami stabs herself

04:08The straw hat's navigator is put through the ringer when she returns to her hometown. Having been forced

04:14to work for her mother's killer, Arlong, for years, Nami hopes to use her savings to purchase

04:19freedom for her village and herself. However, Arlong double-crosses her and has a corrupt marine

04:26confiscate her money. Overcome with fury and despair, Nami takes out her frustration on the only piece of

04:37Arlong within reach – the tattoo on her arm. It's heartbreaking and grisly to watch Nami repeatedly

04:43stab herself. Thankfully, Luffy interrupts Nami's impromptu tattoo removal with an epic promise to help.

04:555. Oden is Boiled

05:05Kozuki Oden endures a lot of punishing challenges in his legendary life, but his final hour is the most

05:12excruciating. After he and his retainers are sentenced to death, Oden makes a deal. Whoever

05:18survives being boiled alive, like his namesake food, for an hour, gets to go free. And while it's

05:24tremendously badass that Oden endures all that time while lifting his men over his head, it's still brutal.

05:313. Anyone besides Oden would have had a grisly end. Oden was born to boil. But taking the expression

05:47literally is a grotesque final indignity.

06:05Number 4 – Whitebeard Loses Face The world's strongest man incurs many wounds

06:19during the battle at Marineford, but the most grievous ones are from Admiral Akainu.

06:24Enraged by the death of Ace, Whitebeard mercilessly attacks his adopted son's killer.

06:30Amid all the quake punches, Akainu gives as good as he gets.

06:34In the anime, Whitebeard merely loses half of his epic facial hair.

06:38However, in the manga, Akainu burns away half of Whitebeard's face.

06:43Sometimes the series just gets too graphic for the anime, and this is one of the gnarliest

06:48injuries a character receives.

06:50Speaking of which…

06:51Kurasaki, I am the enemy!

06:59Number 3 – Zef's Sacrifice for Sanji Sanji is another character whose backstory goes dark.

07:15The Straw Hat's cook was stranded along with his future mentor Zef, a cook slash pirates,

07:20on a small rocket sea.

07:31Sanji endures months of hunger with only a bag of food given to him by Zef.

07:36When he's unable to take it any longer, he tries to take Zef's food, only to find out

07:41that Zef has only treasure.

07:44He gave all the food to Sanji.

07:45Also, Zef is now missing a leg.

07:49Although the anime initially shied away from the implication that Zef ate his own leg, the

07:54manga and later adaptations have made the self-cannibalism all too clear.

08:14Big Mom wasn't always large or a parent.

08:17When Charlotte Linlin was just a child, she still had a monumental appetite and monstrous

08:22strength.

08:23After her foster mother, Caramel, relocates Linlin and the rest of the orphans of Sheep's

08:28house, Linlin is treated to a birthday tea party with her favorite food.

08:33However, in her frenzy to devour it all, Linlin not only takes a bite out of the table,

08:39but she's shocked to find that Mother Caramel and her friends are all mysteriously missing.

08:51And she can now use Caramel's devil fruit ability.

08:55Linlin might be confused about what happened, but we're not.

08:59She ate them.

09:03She ate it.

09:07She ate them.

09:10She ate them.

09:12She ate them.

09:12Robin's backstory is among the most gut-wrenching

09:42in the series.

09:43The world government has outlawed the study of a certain period of history.

09:48When they discover the scholars of O'Hara have defied the law, they don't just kill

09:52all the scholars, they kill everyone on the island.

09:56Men, women, children, they take no chances about anyone escaping.

10:01Finally Robin survives out of the mercy of one marine.

10:17But even then, everyone Robin has ever known is murdered to hide the truth.

10:22It's a heinous act ripped straight from the very worst of real world history.
