Border Czar Tom Homan spoke with reporters outside of the White House on Thursday.
Transcript
00:00surprise. Hi Tom. What's the status on adding more beds to detention centers? In the middle of right now. DHS is reviewing pending contracts, looking for new contracts. We're going to work our way up to 100,000 beds. We have the funding to do it, working on. And other states have teased maybe starting their own alligator Alcatraz. Can you confirm which states maybe have been working with you on more detention centers? I won't confirm the states until we have
00:29an agreement. But I applaud the states are stepping up because this illegal immigration issue is a state problem too. And millions of people released by the Biden administration in the states. So I'm glad the states are stepping up and helping. The vice president said that he hopes that you'll reach net negative immigration this year. Do you think that's possible? And when do you think that will happen? I hope so too. But how quick we bring the resources on. We just got a big beautiful bill which is going to put more boots on the ground. It's going to fund more detention beds. It's how quick we're going to bring people out and get them on the street to make the arrest. So, you know,
00:59great goal. But I'd be, you know, I'd be foolish to give you a number because I don't know. There's too many factors. How many people can get on the streets? How quick can we bring more agents on the street? How quick can we bring contractors in that can do a job that don't require a badging gun so that badging gun get on the streets? There's too many, too many variables. But our goal is to arrest everybody we can as long, you know, prioritizing criminal safety threats and national security threats. But I'll say it again.
01:24In sanctuary cities where our priority is now, you force us in the community to arrest a bad guy, find a bad guy. If he's with others who are in the country legally, they're coming, too.
01:35Mr. Goldman, are you going to do the same thing?
01:37There are reports that ICE is looking to expand ankle monitors for 180,000 plus migrants in the ATD, Alternative to Detention Program. What can you tell us about that?
01:48I'm not on weeds on that, but I support it. I looked at the numbers the other day on the removal orders over the last year. 51% of those who got a remove order were in absentia, which means they didn't show up in court.
01:59So ankle monitors helps with that. So I'm not in weeds on that, but if that's happening, I support 100%.
02:04Mr. Goldman, are you going to keep sending Venezuela members of the TDA to following up on that, do you believe that every illegal should have an ankle?
02:11Well, you know, every case is different. Deportationals make that adjustment based on criminal history, immigration history, so it's a case-by-case basis.
02:20But I can tell you, back when I was the ICE director, having that GPS capability increased those going to court a lot.
02:30So it doesn't make a difference. And it's cheaper than detention, right, in some cases.
02:34But, you know, again, it depends on the cases, but GPS in the past has been very helpful, getting people to court.
02:42And that's a big, like I said, 51% of the remove orders are in absentia. If GPS helps them get them to court, I'm all behind it.
02:48Tom, a long time frowned up. The president passed away today. Hulk Hogan, dead in 71. Do you have a favorite Hulk Hogan memory?
02:56I love Hulk Hogan. I got a, I had an Italian Mastiff dog, 200 pounds, his name, Hulk Homan.
03:01Sir, has the president spoken to you at all about what you want to see in a work program for agricultural and hospitality workers?
03:09That's a conversation being, that's a conversation that's ongoing now. I'm not going to get ahead of the president on that.
03:14But, you know, we'll see what comes up. Look, we have conversations every day on strategy and policies.
03:19That's one conversation happening. But, again, I don't want to get ahead of the president. We'll see what comes up.
03:22Mr. Homan, in terms of the deportation, are you going to keep sending Venezuelan members of the TDA to El Salvador, or are you going to send them directly to Venezuela?
03:30It depends. El Salvador is always an option. They've agreed to a country safe agreement with them. And if they're a citizen in El Salvador, it's a proper place for them to go. It's El Salvador. That's their homeland.
03:45And for your vision, Mr. Homan, how often do you meet with Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller on your vision? And are you all aligned on the border?
03:52I meet with Stephen Miller every day. Stephen Miller is brilliant. I don't care if you like or love the guy. He's the smartest guy I've ever dealt with when it comes to immigration and borders policy. Smart guy. And I am honored to work with him.
04:07Kristi Noem, we talk very frequently. There's no daylight between us.
04:11Tom, on the fentanyl situation on the Mexico border and with Canadians, can you give us an update on whether you've seen progress on that? That's the basis for the tariff on both countries.
04:23We're in the middle of discussions with Canadian faces. I've met them several times. I'm not in a position to comment on that yet.
04:29The President indicated he would try to help Afghan nationals who had aided the United States previously. Will that extend to those who aided the United States who are here under TPS?
04:40Out of my lane. That would be something for the State Department. I'm familiar with some discussions going on, but the State Department has a big role in that, so I'll leave that to them.
04:47Hey, Tom, the Newville Kentucky recently walked back their status designation as a sanctuary city. Here in D.C., Mayor Meryl Bowser is walking back. Her position is D.C. as a sanctuary jurisdiction.
05:03Is there a message in there for other cities like L.A., like Boston, like Chicago? And do you hope to see more jurisdictions change?
05:14Absolutely. Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals. Hard stop. Bottom line. That's what it is.
05:21And President Trump made a commitment a couple weeks ago that we're going to prioritize sanctuary cities.
05:25I made a statement the other day about New York. We're going to flood the zones.
05:28Sanctuary cities are going to get exactly what they don't want, more agents in the communities and more worksite enforcement.
05:35Why is that? Because they won't let one agent arrest one bad guy in the jail.
05:39They're going to release a public safety threat back in the community.
05:41Now I've got to send a whole team to go find that person.
05:44So, you know, we're going to find a bad guy, whether they help us or not.
05:48So if they're releasing the community, we've got to send more people to do that.
05:51Because we just can't send one officer in the community to find a bad guy because of officer safety consideration.
05:56He has access to who knows what weapons, right? The illegal alien criminal.
05:59So we've got to send a whole team.
06:00Now New York is releasing hundreds of criminals every week, right straight from the precincts.
06:06We've got to go find them.
06:07So we know we have a problem in New York City, and that's why President Trump wants to prioritize sanctuary cities.
06:12We know they're releasing public safety threats every day.
06:15We don't have that problem in Florida.
06:16We don't have that problem in Texas.
06:18So those resources can certainly be redeployed.
06:21I've talked to Kristi Nolan about it.
06:23We're going to flood the zone in sanctuary cities.
06:24President Trump made them priority.
06:25It's the right thing to do.
06:26With our limited resources right now, we need to concentrate on the worst first that we've done since day one.
06:32We can continue that, especially in sanctuary cities where we've got no assistance.
06:36Do you have a daily load of arrests when it may be burned?
06:39Do you worry that the assaults on ICE officers will continue to increase?
06:44I hope not.
06:45And I hope the rhetoric, especially for members of Congress, stops.
06:49I've seen members of Congress compare ICE to the Nazis, racists, terrorists.
06:53Members of Congress need to understand one thing.
06:56ICE is enforcing the law that Congress wrote and enacted.
07:01So if ICE is enforcing the immigration law and they call them a racist, what's that make Congress?
07:05They wrote the law.
07:08ICE agents aren't making this up.
07:10They're out there enforcing laws enacted by Congress and signed by a president.
07:12I'll say it again.
07:13We're focusing on national security threats and public safety threats.
07:18They're making this country safe every day.
07:20It's the right thing to do.
07:21And I'm sick and tired of reading in the media that most of the people we arrest aren't criminals.
07:26Tell the whole story.
07:28The majority of the arrests are criminals, public safety threats.
07:31Who are the others?
07:32Many are national security threats.
07:34They may not have a criminal conviction.
07:35We've got over 300 Iranians that we've arrested in the last month or so.
07:40May not have a criminal conviction, but they're national security threat.
07:43Who are the others we're arresting?
07:44Those who have final orders.
07:46Those who had due process at great taxpayer expense.
07:49A federal judge said, you must leave, and they became a fugitive.
07:53So we're going to arrest them, too.
07:54If not, we send a message to the whole world.
07:57Enter the country illegally.
07:58It's a crime, but don't worry about it.
07:59Go to court or don't go to court.
08:01Get an order of removal.
08:02Don't worry about it because no one's looking for you.
08:04No.
08:05We're going to send a message to the whole world.
08:06You've got the right to due process, but at the end of that due process, if you're order removed, you're leaving.
08:11Because if we don't execute those orders, then what the hell are we doing?
08:14Shut down the immigration court.
08:15It doesn't mean anything anymore.
08:16Take the border, trough the border.
08:17No, we're going to enforce the law.
08:18There are a quota of migrants you want to arrest for a day.
08:22A quota.
08:23Pardon me?
08:23Do you have a quota of migrants you want to arrest?
08:25I don't have any quota.
08:26I want to arrest as many public safety threats and national security threats as possible.
08:30I'll arrest when every public safety threat illegal animals are removed from this country.
08:34And for those who question a 3,000 a day saying it's an unreasonable number, do the math.
08:38We'd have to arrest 7,000 a day every day for the remainder of this administration just to remove those who buy administration releasing the country illegally.
08:47Tom, the vice president is attacking Microsoft for firing Americans while still applying for H-1B visas.
08:54What's your message to companies that are doing just that?
08:56Look, it's illegal to hire illegal aliens as far as that.
09:00That would be a question for Joe Adelow over CIS.
09:03They handle the visas.
09:04And again, on the borders, I'm an enforcement guy.
09:07I'm in the export program, not the import program.
09:09Is there any concern that they're on the dock?
09:12Jay?
09:12Is Kilmer Obrego Garcia on public safety threat?
09:14Yes.
09:15Can you give us some weight on the self-deportation numbers?
09:19Last time I looked, it was over 6,000 going through the CBP home app.
09:23But according to numerous studies, there's over 1 million self-deportations since President Trump took office, which is a great thing.
09:28Is there any concern?
09:30The lowest murder rate in history, how much can you contribute to the lockdown of the border to lower the overall murder rate?
09:35A lot.
09:36A lot.
09:36We looked at numbers this morning.
09:38ICE has over 150,000 arrests in the interior, most of them criminals.
09:42Every criminal ICE arrest makes the community much safer.
09:46That's what President Trump's committed to.
09:47President Trump wants a better, safer America, and that's exactly what men and women ICE is doing every day.
09:52And let me say this about the attacks on ICE.
09:54I want you all to remember, ICE agents are mothers and fathers, too.
09:59They don't hang their heart on the hook every day to come to work.
10:01I'm sick and tired of the attacks on ICE.
10:03President Trump's sick and tired of it.
10:05You impeded an ICE officer, you're going to jail.
10:08You throw a stone, you're going to jail.
10:11If you interfere with the enforcement, you're going to jail.
10:15We're done.
10:16We're done playing the game.
10:17We're going to enforce the law.
10:18We're going to make America safer.
10:19And we're going to do it with no apologies.
10:20You mentioned the Iranians, sir.
10:22You mentioned the 300 Iranians.
