00:00TELASUR
00:11TELASUR celebrates 20 years of uninterrupted transmission,
00:1520 years giving voice to the people of the South.
00:22Following a vote of a vote of a subcommittee,
00:25the Supervisory Committee of the US House of Representatives
00:28has decided to summon the Department of Justice to hand over files
00:32related to Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased convicted sex offender.
00:41And in Palestine, the number of people who have died from starvation
00:45has increased in Gaza in the last few hours.
00:47Health authorities confirmed a new death at dawn on Thursday.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:57I'm Alejandra Garcia from TELASUR Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:00We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:0220 years ago, two communicators per excellence of interest and feelings of the peoples of the South,
01:15Fidel Castro and Hugo ChĂĄvez, devised a multinational television company
01:31that would turn the media map upside down by deciding that our North is the South.
01:37It was an unheard of bet in this part of the world,
01:51a multinational alternative to global hegemonic power
01:54that purposed a different humane and ethical communication.
01:5820 years later, it still remains a huge challenge.
02:05Today, social movement of those other people who have another ethic,
02:08who look at and recognize the world and its conflicts from another perspective,
02:13but that is the most enormous thing we have achieved in the last 20 years.
02:17To go from an idea, from a need, from a reflection that stops being theoretical,
02:23to say, here it is, we did it.
02:26With its imperfections, with its challenges, of course, there are many challenges,
02:30but it is a reality that exists and has been somehow accompanied even in some cases,
02:36transforming or contributing to the transformation of realities of our continent and the world.
02:42Never before has a country geemonic global South media that empowers and privileges the voices of the humble and excluded
02:54was so potent and powerful.
02:57We have been on the scene of the news in wars, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, protests.
03:07We have sought exclusive interviews with presidents, chancellors, prime ministers, intellectuals, artists,
03:13world record sportsmen, interesting people, but above all, we have been close to the people.
03:19We have been close to the people.
03:21Telesur is going to be consolidating.
03:25Telesur will consolidate itself as a multi-platform with different formats, with different media,
03:31seeking to communicate with those audiences that today are dispersed in different platforms,
03:36seeking interactions with the audience and to maintain its relevance and pertinence.
03:41From this new ecosystem, we will continue to reach out with the pillars that have always sustained Telesur,
03:53to be close to the people, to put the camera to those who have been denied a voice, visibility.
03:59Because Telesur understands that visibility is power, and that is what we will continue to do for the next 20 years.
04:10Today, Telesur produces content in Spanish, English and Portuguese, and is working on perfecting its communication strategies
04:25and making positive use of artificial intelligence.
04:28The idea is to more effectively reach millions of users in need of a different type of storytelling.
04:34We are working on a better image, on a fresher image, on a better quality of the signal, trying to make the distribution of the signal as wide as possible,
04:46to govern more areas, to reach the public and, I repeat, under the best quality standards.
04:59By tricking, we have been dominated more than by force.
05:04As Simon Bolivar once said, that is why for many people the emancipating communicational experience of Latin America is increasingly necessary.
05:13Sometimes, you think you know a lot, and it turns out that your Telesur has learned about historical important things,
05:26cultural roots of vital importance, for the strengthening of our respective countries of the continent.
05:32As a single nation, as it should be, not globalized as the United States government aspired.
05:39That is why Telesur is the best thing we have.
05:41And that is why Telesur is the best thing we have.
05:44The truth is that for the last two decades, whoever wants to know what is happening in the world with Latin American and Caribbean perspective,
06:00has without a doubt, the best option in Telesur.
06:04The multi-platform that turned the media map upside down under the maxim that our north is the south.
06:10Claudia LĂłpez, Telesur, Caracas, Venezuela.
06:17The celebration continues, and now we go with our correspondent in Cuba, Belén de los Santos, who is in Havana,
06:23precisely with another colleague of ours, Luis Alberto Matos,
06:26doing a commemorative act held by the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television to honor the 20 years of Telesur.
06:33Hello, studios. It's a pleasure to greet you from Havana, Cuba, in this case.
06:40And at such an important event at this moment, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of our multi-platform Telesur.
06:49We are at the Institute, the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television.
06:54We have just seen one of the commemorative events here take place.
06:59The authorities of the Cuban Radio and Television honored Telesur with a series of acknowledgments.
07:06And also, we are seeing right behind me just one of the moments that really honor this trajectory,
07:15this project that speaks of the global south, that speaks of the histories and narratives of our own people
07:22that we are bringing to the world. And also, in English, to a whole new audience from the last years.
07:30Telesur English is one of the important parts of this project that was thought out 20 years ago.
07:37And I'm joined right now by none other than one of our key anchors, Luis Alberto Matos.
07:45You were also part of the ceremony.
07:47And let me ask you, Liz, what does it feel for you?
07:51What does it mean to be part of this 20th anniversary in Telesur?
07:55Thank you, Belen, for that introduction.
07:57Well, I gotta say, I'm a bit nervous. I'm usually on the other side of the mic.
08:01But to be part of this celebration, to be part of the Telesur family,
08:04something that people don't understand until you're part of it.
08:07It's a sense of pride to be doing this kind of work, because once you're in it,
08:10you see the importance that the work that you're doing it has,
08:13and also the result it has when you see all the people that are watching our signal
08:17across the Caribbean, in Africa, all over the world.
08:20And they continue to follow the news that are happening with us,
08:23and they comment with us, and they are part of our work as well,
08:26because they are our voices, and we are giving their voice as well.
08:29So it's a reciprocal, a two-way street going on.
08:31I've been part of the Telesur family for five years.
08:34It's turned 20 now, which I've been 20 years of hard work, of lots of learning.
08:38And in these five years, I've been part of this family.
08:40I've began to learn more about the world, but also about myself,
08:45because being in Telesur has given me an opportunity to expand borders
08:49that I didn't know that I even had.
08:51So to be part of this celebration, to be part of how people see Telesur,
08:55and how they perceive the work that we're doing with so much pride is of great joy.
09:00I'm very proud of being part of this family.
09:04Such an important event. Thank you so much, Luis, for sharing with us your experience
09:09being part of this family. It's truly one of the most important things that we have,
09:14and that we're celebrating at this moment.
09:16So this is just a little bit of what is happening, not just here in Cuba,
09:20but all over the continent.
09:22We are celebrating this 20 years together, this 20 years of a regional project
09:27that continues and vows to continue for many more years.
09:31For now, we will continue celebrations, but for now, we go back to studios.
09:37Thank you, Bel, and thank you, Luis. We keep celebrating today.
09:41Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel also congratulated Telesur
09:45on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of our multi-platform,
09:49with a special mention to Telesur's President Patricia Villegas.
09:53In his official ex-account, the President highlighted,
09:56on the Liberator's birthday, Telesur was born 20 years ago.
10:01Since that day, the peoples of our America have had their own voice and image
10:06to tell their truth. Congratulations to you, dear Patricia Villegas.
10:11And also, the Almagetine News Agency congratulated the multi-platform
10:16through its Telegram account, with the following message.
10:38This agency congratulated the Multiplatform through its Telegram account with the following
10:43message, Telesur's 20th anniversary, voice of the peoples of the Global South.

11:06And now we have a short break coming up, the first remember you can join us on Tik Tok
11:09at Telesur English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
11:13We'll be right back and start with us.
11:33Welcome back to From the South.
11:35The Venezuelan government, alongside its people, commemorated Thursday with a solemn act,
11:41the 242nd birthday anniversary of the Liberator SimĂłn BolĂvar.
11:45Venezuelan officials paid honours to the father of the homeland by both raising the national
11:49flag and singing the country's anthem, Glory to the Brave People, in the National Pantheon.
11:55Moreover, they laid a wrath to the sarcophagus of the Liberator.
11:59In addition to this commemoration, Venezuelans also celebrated on Thursday the day of the
12:05Bolivarian National Navy and the naval battle of Lake Maracaibo.

12:44but she had ended up behind bars, along with other Colombians, accused of participating in informal loans, known as drop-by-drop.
12:52Likewise, Mervin Llamarte, a young Venezuelan who had shared a cell with Colombians, described the prison as a true hell.
13:00Thus, she reported constant beatings, poor food conditions, and forced labor.

13:10which are reflecting about overcrowding, lack of fair trials, and inhumane conditions.

13:21Following a favorable vote in a subcommittee, the Supervisory Committee of the US House of Representatives
13:27has decided to summon the Department of Justice to hand over files related to Jeffrey Epstein,
13:33the deceased convicted sex offender.
13:35On Wednesday, three Republicans on the subcommittee joined the Democrats in approving the motion,
13:41which passed with a vote of 8 to 2.
13:46This decision came shortly after the committee referred Shislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former partner,
13:53who is serving a 20-year sentence for child trafficking, for prosecution.

15:08This was in response to a lawsuit filed by the states of Washington, Arizona, Illinois and Oregon,
15:15which warned that the measure would have serious legal, administrative and financial consequences for local governments.
15:22With two votes in favor and one against, the judges of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that the proposal has no legal basis,
15:30as it contradicts the existence of the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to everyone burned on U.S. soil.
15:42The border crisis that began in May between Thailand and Cambodia escalated dangerously on Thursday.
15:49In the disputed border area, military contingents engaged in an armed confrontation.

20:29Welcome back to From the South.
20:36In Palestine, the number of people who have died from starvation has increased in Gaza
20:41in the last few hours.
20:42Health authorities confirmed 10 new deaths are done on Thursday.
20:46In this sense, more than 120 people have died under Israeli fire, including 34 who were
20:52waiting for food.
20:54Deaths from starvation, which according to the Palestinians is as lethal as the bombs,
20:59have risen to more than 115, while doctors warn that many patients, especially shooting,
21:05are at high risk.
21:07On the other hand, more than 100 organizations report that there are tons of food on the
21:12outskirts of Gaza, but the Israeli blockade prevents entry and access to aid.
21:24The United Nations Organization has once again spoken out against the new restrictions imposed
21:31by Israel, which now limits the validity of visas for the staff of its humanitarian office
21:35to just one month.
21:37Stefano Jarek, spokesperson for United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, warned
21:43that this measure further hinders the delivery of aid in Gaza, where thousands of people continue
21:49to face hunger, displacement and extreme deprivation.
21:52He also responded to the Israeli government's accusations about alleged links between United
21:57Nations workers and Hamas, confirming that these are serious accusations and calling for
22:03any evidence to be shared immediately.
22:05The Jarek also said that they are ready to expand assistance in Gaza if, as is fired, is agreed.
22:11For this to happen, Israel must open all border crossings and guarantee safe conditions for
22:17humanitarian personnel.
22:22In Israel, the Kennesad approved Wednesday a symbolic motion to support the annexation of
22:27the West Bank, which is an occupied Palestinian territory.
22:31Previously, there have been calls on the Kennesad to enact this law in that matter.
22:36Therefore, the proposal received 71 votes in favor and 13 against.
22:41In addition, such decision came shortly after the same parliament revoked, in absolute majority,
22:47the creation of a Palestinian state.
22:49Meanwhile, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry ensured that the Israeli motion was a new war
22:54declaration.
22:55The entity further described it as a colonialist policy that violates international law and United
23:01Nations resolutions.
23:03In all, Israeli forces have escalated their offensive on the occupied West Bank since October 2023.
23:10Turkey confirms the death of five forest fighters and five members of the Search and Rescue
23:32Service during operations to extinguish a devastating fire in Senjitkazi Eskizne province.
23:37The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Jumakli, lamented the death of the workers,
23:44noting that they lost their lives after a sudden change in the wind direction fanned by the flames.
23:49The voracity of the fire linked to the very high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity
23:55have transformed the incident into a large-scale emergency.
23:59In this context, Turkish authorities are currently battling seven active forest fires in different
24:05provinces.
