President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, wore the official sanction by the United States,
00:15
the European Union and Canada during the closing ceremony of the International Antifascist
00:20
War Festival.
00:25
In Israel, thousands of people took to the streets of Tel Aviv for the weekly protest
00:29
against Benjamin Netanyahu's government and for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
00:36
The U.S. Attorney's Office requested a sentence of at least 15 years in prison against former
00:40
Democrat Senator Bob Menendez if he was accused of bribery and corruption.
00:47
Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:57
Cuba.
00:58
Let's begin with the news.
00:59
In Venezuela, after three days of events, the World Festival of the Antifascists International
01:04
ended in Caracas.
01:06
More than 2,000 delegates from five continents participated and took decisions to move forward.
01:10
Let's see the following work by our correspondent, Junot Soler.
01:14
Some of the delegates had traveled for more than 40 hours to attend the festival.
01:19
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro held the final speech of the event, recognizing
01:24
their efforts generally.
01:25
We could say that it is the antifascist international, but it is also the international of the brave,
01:40
of the warriors, of those who fight.
01:44
On behalf of all of Venezuela, I thank you for having come to this historic, unprecedented
01:51
day.
01:52
On the other side, Venezuela and its efforts were acknowledged far away in African countries
01:58
fighting against colonialism.
01:59
I'm here in Caracas to give our support to the antifascist president, who is Nicolás
02:09
Maduro, our leader, our international and antifascist president.
02:17
And here we learn about the struggle of Latin America and we want to connect those struggles
02:28
to the struggle in Africa.
02:30
Others from Nepal, the heart of Asia, witness fascism as geopolitical imperialism.
02:36
It's bordered with Tibet of China and India, so it's very important in geography.
02:43
The evil eyes of imperialists, they are always in Nepal and they want to intervene or they
02:51
want to make it unstable and they want to make it one of their satellite or one of their
02:58
allies.
02:59
Again, others are focused on the president-elect of the United States of America.
03:05
Unfortunately, in our war today, we confer the Trump as the president of the United States.
03:14
I think he is the symbol of the fascism today and the people around the world who want freedom,
03:22
who defend for justice, we must be united against the Trump fascism, United States.
03:32
Fascism goes together with Zionism.
03:35
Samar Al-Gul from Palestine is studying medicine in Cuba.
03:39
Her parents and brothers are in Gaza.
03:41
What do they tell her?
03:43
You don't have to stay in the home crying, just seeing the news, the bad news.
03:56
You have to go out to talk about us, to talk with people, to say to them that we are suffering
04:18
for this genocide.
04:21
Finishing her medicine studies, she will return to her homeland.
04:24
For the time being, the anti-fascist international makes her feel that Palestine is not alone.
04:30
And more will be done, says Yosselin Garcia.
04:33
I think we are going to have meetings for preparing the same festival in the country,
04:42
but also condemn the Palestinian genocide and of course trying to keep fighting for
04:50
the peace in the world.
04:52
In their final declaration, the delegates agreed to establish more chapters in different
04:56
countries to coordinate a meeting of think tanks to coordinate political formation activities.
05:02
The establishment of a People's Anti-Fascist Feminist International was also decided upon.
05:07
The delegates finished the event swearing an oath.
05:18
From the World Festival of the Anti-Fascist International, we raise our fist, we swear
05:24
firmly, together with President Nicolas Maduro, we swear to the self-determination of the
05:31
peoples to advance in the fight against fascism.
05:36
Long live the people of Venezuela, long live the people of the world.
05:43
After three days of meetings, the Anti-Fascist International proceeds with determination
05:48
and concrete steps.
05:49
Yunus Soner, Telesur, Caracas, Venezuela.
05:54
The Venezuelan Armed Forces collectively rejected on Saturday the new package of illegal unilateral
05:59
sanctions imposed by the United States government against national state officials.
06:03
Through a joint broadcast, the Bolivarian Army condemned the sanctions, affirming they
06:07
only strengthened their determination to defend the homeland from foreign interference and
06:11
imperialist pretensions.
06:12
In addition, the Armed Forces rejected the reward offered by Washington for the capture
06:16
of Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez.
06:20
Furthermore, the national forces reminded the world they only owe themselves to the
06:24
will of the people and not to those of third countries supported by leaders of the Venezuelan
06:29
far right.
06:34
The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, held meetings with personalities representing
06:38
different countries and organizations that attended his swearing-in as president.
06:43
One day after his swearing-in and re-election as President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro
06:48
held a meeting with the official delegation of the Republic of Belarus to discuss trade
06:52
and economic cooperation in strategic areas.
06:55
Viktor Karenkovich, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus and co-president
06:59
of the Belarusian-Venezuelan Mixed Commission, together with all authorities attended the
07:04
meeting while recognizing the presidency of the Venezuelan President in a constitutional
07:08
manner.
07:09
During the meeting, the current and future challenges between the two nations were discussed,
07:13
as well as future projects in the sphere of food production, trade, industry, petrochemicals,
07:18
reactivation of factories and heavy machinery.
07:24
And the Venezuelan head of state also received the visit of a delegation from the Democratic
07:27
Republic of the Congo.
07:29
The first Vice Chairman of the Senate and Special Envoy of the Republic of the Congo,
07:33
José Kalala, arrived in the country on representation of President Félix de Siqueira to recognize
07:38
President Nicolas Maduro's investorship.
07:41
The ties between Venezuela and the Democratic Republic of the Congo date back to 2005.
07:46
So for 20 years, a macro agreement has prevailed between the two countries based on communication,
07:52
dialogue and exchange of information.
08:06
And President Nicolas Maduro received a delegation from Burkina Faso headed by President of the
08:11
Transitional Legislative Assembly of Burkina Faso, Ousmane Boukouma.
08:16
The country shares a project with Venezuela and is seeking its emancipation from the dominant
08:20
models.
08:21
The meeting is propitious to review the agenda of commercial and political exchanges between
08:26
the two countries, which includes 20 cooperation agreements in different areas such as aeronautics,
08:31
agriculture, civil protection, culture, sports, science and technology.
08:41
In a statement, members of the ALBA-TCP expressed their total rejection of the new measures
08:45
imposed against Venezuela by the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European
08:50
Union.
08:51
In the statement, it was said the member states of ALBA-TCP reject the aggressions against
08:55
the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including unilateral coercive measures against state
09:00
officials announced this January 10, 2025, during the inauguration of President Nicolas
09:06
Maduro for the 2025-2031 constitutional period.
09:10
Additionally, the member states expressed in the text the unscrupulous, extortative
09:14
and criminal measures imposed in unison by the U.S., Canadian, British and European Union
09:20
governments.
09:21
While the presidential swearing-in ceremony was taking place, reflects the cultic complicity
09:25
and obvious premeditation of governments of the corporate West to jeopardize peace
09:30
and stability of a free, sovereign and independent nation such as Venezuela.
09:55
Welcome back.
10:14
In Israel, thousands of people took to the streets of Tel Aviv for the weekly protest
10:18
against Benjamin Netanyahu's government and for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
10:23
During the demonstration, those present denounced the death of six Israeli soldiers in Palestinian
10:28
territory and demanded a ceasefire with Hamas for a prisoner exchange.
10:32
Saturday's rally was also attended by several ambassadors from countries such as the United
10:36
States, the United Kingdom and Germany, who called on international organizations to put
10:41
pressure on Netanyahu's regime to end the conflict in the enclave.
10:45
For his part, the Israeli Prime Minister agreed to send the head of the Mossad to the ceasefire
10:48
negotiations in Qatar.
11:18
According to internationalist Wadi Calbo, the defense treaty between his two countries
11:36
had offered benefits to France, while for Sharian people it meant little or nothing.
11:41
Sharian President Mahamad Idris Debbi had begun to distance himself from France and
11:45
move influence by the recent ruptures of other African nations and the European country.
11:50
This shift in Chad's foreign policy could bring them more in line with the new Sahel
11:55
alliance, which has been moving closer to powers such as Russia, China and Iran, posing
12:00
a significant challenge to Western influence in the region.
12:07
South Korean authorities indicated that the final four minutes before impact were not
12:11
registered in the cockpit voice recorders of the Yuju airplane crashed on December 29
12:16
at Muan airport.
12:20
Analysis of the pilots' cockpit voice and flight data revealed that the recording stopped
12:24
at 8.59 local time.
12:27
This complicates the investigation into the causes of the disaster that killed 179 people,
12:32
one of the worst in the history of South Korean aviation.
12:35
Authorities will now analyze the reasons why the black boxes stopped recording minutes
12:40
before impact.
12:41
The pilot had issued a distress alert and notified the air traffic control tower that
12:45
the aircraft had been affected by a bird strike.
12:53
In Croatia, the second round of the presidential election is underway.
12:57
The first round held on December 29, outgoing President Zoran Milanovic won with a near
13:02
majority of 49.9% of the vote, out of Dragan Primovarac with 19.35%.
13:08
Milanovic is the clear favorite for the runoff and has the support of the Croatian Social
13:20
Democratic Party, a member of the Party of European Socialists.

Welcome back.
13:54
The U.S. Attorney's Office requested a sentence of at least 15 years in prison against former
13:58
Democrat Senator Bob Menendez after he was accused of bribery and corruption.
14:02
The demand of the U.S. Attorney's Office comes after Menendez was found guilty on July
14:06
16, 2024, of the 16 charges against him.
14:10
According to the document presented to the court, the U.S. politician abused his power
14:13
as senator, damaged the public trust, and involved other officials in his acts of corruption.
14:18
For his part, Menendez pleaded not guilty of all charges and asked the court to delay
14:22
his sentencing until the trial of his wife is completed for the same cases.
14:27
In Ecuador, health authorities confirmed the death of Mayor of Arenillas Municipality,
14:36
Eber Ponce, after being seriously injured in an armed attack.
14:40
According to the authorities, the mayor was attacked while he was riding in a municipal
14:44
vehicle with a minor who was also wounded in the shooting.
14:47
Reports indicate that the perpetrator was on a motorcycle and was carrying a rifle used
14:51
to shoot the mayor, who was taken to a health center and confirmed dead.
14:55
So far, approximately seven politicians have been brutally murdered during the administration
14:59
of current President Daniel Novoa, of which at least five headed the mayor's offices
15:03
of several municipalities in the country.
15:05
In the Mexican state of Michoacan, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred early Sunday
15:26
morning.
15:27
As reported by the National Seismological Service, the earthquake movement occurred
15:30
around 2.30 local time, southwest of the town of Coalcomán, and had an estimated depth
15:36
of 10 kilometers.
15:37
Mexico's Parecian-Clavachin band announced that emergency agencies began operations.
15:42
Likewise, Mexico City's chief of government, Clara Brugada Molina, affirmed that emergency
15:48
protocols have been activated in the city.
15:52
The number of deaths caused by the fires that broke out earlier this week in Los Angeles
15:59
has increased to 16.
16:01
According to the latest update from Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, 11 of those deaths
16:06
are due to the Eden Fire, located to the northeast and near the cities of Pasadena and Altadena.
16:12
The other five are from the Palisades Fire, the largest and most extensive fire to date,
16:17
which is only 11 percent contained.
16:19
The new death toll comes as crews of hundreds of firefighters continue to battle the fires
16:23
that started last Tuesday, and in anticipation of expected increased winds that will hamper
16:28
their work.
16:29
In Peru, the government has declared a state of emergency in 338 districts of the country
16:38
in the event of heavy rain.
16:40
The affected regions include Amazonas, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Lima, Loreto,
16:46
Funo, among others.
16:47
The decree states that the measure is intended to mitigate the existing high risks, the negative
16:52
effects of the phenomenon, and to coordinate efforts to provide immediate responses.
16:57
The government agencies must work together to implement urgent emergency measures and
17:01
carry out response and rehabilitation work.
17:08
In Nicaragua, the number of maternal deaths dropped from 104 to 21 between 2006 and 2024,
17:16
a 79.8 percent reduction, according to a Ministry of Health report.
17:22
The health entity also recorded a reduction in infant mortality by 52.6 percent from 1,916
17:28
children under one year of age who died in 2006 to 908 last year.
17:33
Newborn deaths were 507 in 2024, which shows a 62.5 percent reduction compared to 1,352
17:42
recorded in 2006.
17:43
On the other hand, the document made reference to the reduction of chronic malnutrition in
17:48
children under 5 years of age, with a percentage of 21.7 in 2006, while in 2024 it stood at 4.5.
