00:00Liverpool Council is deeply disappointed that Hillsborough Law has still not been brought forward by the government
00:06and will increase pressure on the Prime Minister to honour his pledge.
00:09A year ago, the City Council unanimously agreed to a motion calling the landmark legislation to be introduced.
00:16The Hillsborough Law seeks to bring in a legal responsibility for public servants to tell the truth, referred to as a duty of candour.
00:23It would also ensure legal funding is provided to people affected by state-related disasters like Hillsborough.
00:29In the aftermath of Councillor Liam Robinson, leader of the City Council, writing to Sir Keir Starmer, urging him to deliver on his promise,
00:38a fresh motion has been set down by the Liverpool Labour Group, seconded by the Liberal Democrats,
00:43stating the city's resolute position in this vital legislation.
00:47Concerns have been raised by families and Labour MPs that the government could look to bring in a watered-down version of the proposed law.
00:55During a session of Prime Minister's questions last month, Deputy PM Angela Rayner said legislation would be brought forward
01:02as soon as we're confident they will deliver the justice victims deserve.
01:07Sir Keir told the Labour conference at ACC Liverpool in 2024 that the law would be introduced to mark the 36th anniversary in April this year.
01:16That deadline was missed.
01:17Additionally, councillors insist the law must ensure victims of disasters or state-related deaths
01:24are entitled to parity of legal representation during inquests and inquiries.
01:29If agreed by councillors at Liverpool Town Hall next week, Andrew Lewis, chief executive of the City Council,
01:35will write to the Prime Minister in a co-signed letter with the leaders of political groups
01:39to restate the council's resolute position in this vital legislation.
01:44Thank you very much.
